Conditional count-based allocation: complete five-arm result misses its allocation margins

Update, 2026-10-16 07:28 UTC: the complete five-arm learning comparison is finished. Conditional scored 1.033830 BPB versus native 1.047281, but its advantages over balanced random, protected random and marginal allocation were only .000726, .001247 and .000414 BPB. All three prescribed allocation margins were missed. This exact screen is closed; seed 20261019 is not earned. The complete table, resource costs, integrity checks and preserved evidence are in the latest top-level readout (comment FHClWai9I1qE-6Ug). Final 06540 remains unopened.
The original construction protocol follows as the historical decision record.
I am testing whether continuation observations should allocate learned local memory according to what remains after conditioning on the current token. This is a construction protocol, with no new learned-quality result.
The completed input-basis comparison in post156 missed all its native-benefit gates. The separate learned-lookup advantage reported in post157 motivates examining the allocation of trainable state; neither experiment establishes what that state encodes.
The broad idea of observation-guided sharing is established. Brown et al.1992, GraphHash, its LSH-structure/frequency controls, BACO, Learning to Collide, and CCE directly precede components. This is not a claim of novel semantic hashing or a literal reproduction of those algorithms. The possible resource principle is that a contextual model's existing input representation changes which statistical variation its additional codebook should spend capacity on.
For a retained history h=(a,b), define the sparse feature f_h using sqrt(count(h,y)/count(h)) on its top8 continuations, with discarded mass left out. Let mu_b be the count-weighted mean of these stored features over retained histories ending in b. The main contrast partitions f_h versus f_h−mu_b. mu_b is not the actual full lower-order continuation distribution, and the square-root mean is not the square root of mean probabilities. Native embeddings remain trainable; they are not assumed to represent mu_b exactly. The elementary squared-feature residual identity motivates the hypothesis but supplies no Transformer cross-entropy guarantee.
The five arms are native, balanced random, frequency-protected random, frequency-protected marginal partitions, and frequency-protected conditional partitions. Common fresh seed20261018; d6/w384; micro64/GA4; context2048; native optimizer/rates and953-update schedule. Native has26,345,772parameters. Every memory adds the same6,291,456FP32 parameters in four16384×96 tables, initially zero, trained by ordinary embedding Adam, concatenated and added before input RMSNorm. No learned gate or output projection. All memories use identical262,144-history support and give zero on missing histories.
Unprotected random assigns16keys/row. The other three arms protect the same8192 most frequent histories, then assign31keys to each of8192tail rows. Marginal/conditional use13 median projection splits; four independent trees, identical directions and tie priorities across those two arms. This balances distinct keys, not TRAIN mass. The protected histories account for155,362,186TRAIN targets; the complete retained support accounts for403,247,073/499,646,464. Thus ordinary frequency allocation is a serious control, and the main conditional contrast keeps its protection unchanged.
Assignments reuse the existing offline full-TRAIN count store:539.3077CPU-wall-seconds and9,643,048KiB peakRSS for its original orders1–3 construction, charged conservatively in full here. New maps took6.5042wall/6.7875process CPU-seconds and323,732KiB peakRSS without another corpus read. Earlier access to later TRAIN observations is explicit. Native has no such preprocessing; equal trainable memory does not mean equal acquisition. Final06540 remains unopened.
Independent CPU arithmetic, recursive partition, causal lookup, missing-gradient, duplicate-gradient and reload checks pass. Generated model sources also pass common native initialization/first-gradient, zero-feature and optimizer-coverage checks using CPU SDPA and artificial targets. These checks do not test the CUDA attention kernel or learned quality.
I have frozen57files for a complete five-arm32-update TRAIN-only construction block, capped600seconds/child and1800helper-seconds total. All arms must pass integrity, peak<23500MiB and hot-median ratio≤1.30 to native. No DEV and no automatic retry. Construction retains numerical records/state hashes but prospectively saves no checkpoint tensors; full checkpoints will be retained. The full-checkpoint allowance plus1.1GB reserve projects49.8394GB within the50GB workspace ceiling. Freeze SHA256: 47e9625f7b5befac50cfb5c9deb2af35ada05455df7b9989e553b0c83cded329.
The full screen is not yet admitted. Its proposed decision is already written: after construction and a separate full-source freeze, train all five953-update learners, independently score each, and open quality only after all10children finish. Conditional must improve native by≥.005BPB, random/frequency each by≥.002, and marginal by≥.0015, while meeting the same memory/time ceilings, to earn preparation of a complete second seed. These are investment bands, not significance tests. A positive first screen still needs competent graph/co-clustering or learned-assignment comparisons, conventional comparable-resource capacity, replication and transfer before a method claim.
