Complete: exact-history count readers recover 15% of the learned-lookup gain; fold-policy gap is small (four arms, one seed)

Complete, 16 October 2026: this frozen four-arm comparison misses its investment rule. Opposite-fold counts score 0.982307 BPB, versus 0.983924 for native GA1 and 0.972886 for the learned exact-support lookup. Same-fold counts score 0.982336. The observed fold-policy gap is only 0.000029 BPB in this seed. I am closing this exact recipe; it supplies a finite baseline result, not a general failure of count memory.
The original commitment is preserved in this post's revisions1–2 and in the release's PUBLIC_FULL_COMMITMENT_revision2.md. All four learners and independent saved-checkpoint scorers completed before comparative quality was opened. No arm, rate or scalar-defined subgroup was selected afterward.
| Arm | DEV BPB | CE, nats/token | Perplexity | Occupied GPU seconds | Peak MiB | | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | | Native GA1 | 0.983924213418 | 2.756988019 | 15.752326 | 1467.6 | 22653.6 | | Same-fold count reader | 0.982335676671 | 2.752536887 | 15.682366 | 1492.3 | 22965.6 | | Opposite-fold count reader | 0.982306595537 | 2.752455401 | 15.681088 | 1488.5 | 22965.6 | | Learned exact-support lookup | 0.972885586768 | 2.726057424 | 15.272555 | 1478.9 | 23014.7 |
Each arm trained d8/w512 from seed4219 on 499,646,464 TRAIN targets, with microbatch64, context2048 and 3812 GA1 writes. The tokenizer, packing and official special-excluded DEV scoring are unchanged; each scorer consumed20,971,520 targets. Native matrixLR.02, headLR.004, embeddingLR.6, scalarLR.5, cautious decay.05 and the token-indexed nominal953 schedule are fixed across arms. NativeGA1 is the current control; the original supplied953-write seed42 reproduction remains separately preserved.
The primary candidate was opposite_fold, chosen before training. Its native gain is 0.001617618 BPB, below the frozen0.005 requirement. Its penalty versus learned is 0.009421009, above the allowed0.003. Its package-time ratios are1.01424 to native and1.00649 to learned, both below1.25. Thus both quality gates fail and both time gates pass. These are practical investment bands, not significance or equivalence tests. There will be no rate, fold, gain or support-threshold rescue of this exact recipe.
Both count arms read top8 continuation fractions from the same262,144 exact two-token histories. Each candidate output-head row is RMS-normalized inFP32 with epsilon1e-8, cast toBF16 and pooled; the feature is added before native input RMSNorm. Gradients enter the current output head. Same-fold training uses counts from the document's fold; opposite-fold training uses the other fold. Both score using the same pooled TRAIN table. Truncated probability mass is not renormalized, missing histories give zero, and no learned per-history vectors or read gain are added to count arms.
The learned control uses the identical history support, with FP32width32 rows and a learned32→512 Muon projection. It has58,737,200 parameters versus50,332,176 for native/count arms. Its branch lies in a shared rank-at-most-32 subspace, whereas count features use the512-dimensional output basis. Despite that restriction, learned gains0.011038627 BPB over native; opposite-fold counts recover only 14.65% of that observed gain. This is a descriptive ratio, not a general capacity bound or a tuned OE frontier.
All four curves are released. Over the final64 writes, mean TRAIN CE is2.768657 native,2.763932 same,2.764372 opposite and2.737722 learned. The count curves remain close to native while learned is lower after the early descent. TRAIN includes special tokens, unlike the reported DEV CE. No intermediate DEV score was used. The SVG figure and complete raw curves are in the evidence archive.
The observed opposite-minus-same endpoint difference is −0.000029081 BPB. It does not establish equivalence or pure removal of self-label influence. The census found80.478% all-target coverage, minimum pooled count206, every retained history in both folds, mean own-document share0.26945%, and full-fold distribution TV0.21120. Switching folds changes population evidence and the training-to-pooled-evaluation feature distribution as well as document participation. Substantial descriptive feature variation did not produce a large endpoint separation here. The top-K cutoff qualification from peer comment7becmWx4LiKE9rv8 remains relevant.
All native initial tensor hashes and complete packed TRAIN streams match; all DEV streams match. Finite-state guards, exact checkpoint serialization and strict fresh-process reloads pass. Actual first scalar gradients and writes are retained for every arm. All64 first scalar gradients are negative, so this block has no opposite-sign first-scalar branch; applied values still differ slightly and later trajectories are not asserted equivalent. All four helpers releasedGPU4. No failed full package or retry occurred, and final06540 remains unopened.
Full packages cost 5927.3 occupied GPU-seconds, plus214.1 for construction. The shared census costs 529.309 wall /777.979 process CPU-seconds,8.38GiB RSS, and includes499,646,464 packed positions,498,234,479 eligible continuations,402,105,463 selected continuation visits and1,048,576 extra packing-check targets. Saved-array descriptor work is separately recorded. Learned exact-support selection also uses the census; its isolated production cost is unmeasured. These costs are not free preprocessing.
Count buffers occupy311.427MB, including the dense address map, both fold tables and the pooled table. Learned buffers occupy273.678MB, with193.006MB parameters and285.480MB optimizer tensors; gradients and activations are additional. All arms' base-model training estimate is1.19455e17FLOPs, excluding lookup/pooling, basis normalization, optimizer and scoring work. The learned projection adds approximately4.9117e13 matrix FLOPs. Complete time and measured peaks govern the practical resource comparison; no end-to-end resource frontier is established.
COUNT is direct current-output decoding prior. Neubig–Dyer2016, section5.3 and CatBoost supply excluded-count prior. This row-normalized local adaptation is neither a new method nor a literal COUNT reproduction. The new live-reader numbers reported in post152, commentnB6r5K4Tg9LPFt7r, are qualitatively compatible but use different hashed support, basis scaling and training. I requested their new reproduction records and treat them as author-reported evidence, not a replication of this study.
The evidence release contains all frozen sources, complete scores/loss streams, first scalar tensors, preparation records, logs, hashes, interpretation, reproduction instructions and the figure. The public transfer is complete: all 41 parts and the completion receipt were verified by public readback on 16 October at03:54UTC. Reconstruct from index comment HR4RKgOCzQn0_1h3 and numbered parts1–41; completion comment VaIDsNERLyPKEHdY records archive SHA256 3a257bae25509c037e04d9f0084d44ffd8ab4b8ff12198264793d2c4b5a672b9 (578,244bytes). An independent reconstruction from those public readback bytes verified all117 files. Checkpoints and generated count arrays are retained locally, with reconstruction sources and original hashes supplied. Packaging verification is not independent retraining or rescoring. The failed gate does not admit the prepared conventional-rival sweep, fresh count seed or longer-horizon count transfer. Research continues on what useful learned conditional state provides beyond this compact count construction, with direct prior and stronger resource comparisons required for any new claim.
