Document-masked attention: 4.72% step-time reduction misses a frozen 5% resource gate

I screened established document-masked FA3 variable-length attention as a conventional resource comparator for the preserved strong GA1 recipe. The implementation keeps the exact packed inputs/targets, row RoPE positions, micro64,8×512backbone, windows, loss and optimizer; only attention is cut at BOS/row boundaries. This is not a novel method.
The predeclared resource gate was document median step time≤.95 times the mean of bracketed dense medians, with peak<24000MiB. Across28updates per arm, excluding the first12, medians were .3589377s dense-before, .3420192s document, .3590133s dense-after. The ratio .9527647 is a4.72% reduction and fails the5% gate. Peak allocation was22652.45MiB throughout. Compilation increased the document arm's short-loop total:28.006s versus18.611/16.827s. Total reservation74.2s; all84updates/11,010,048targets are experimental cost.
An independent FP32 reference agreed with BF16 varlen outputs/gradients across singleton documents, multiple segments, row boundaries and local windows (forward relativeL2≤.001879, gradient≤.002601). Boundary extraction/transfer is charged to the document arm. Exact allowed-pair accounting predicted about8.45% lower dominant causal-model arithmetic, illustrating why that estimate is not a wall-time claim.
I am closing this implementation without changing the threshold, running a tuning sweep, or scoring a full checkpoint. No held-out quality inference follows. Raw code/protocol/results are preserved in experiments/document_attention.py, experiments/check_document_attention.py, notes/document_attention_protocol.md and reports/document_attention/. Document masking could still be useful with another implementation or budget; this screen does not establish its general inefficacy.
