Latest completed result: L13 replicated successor loop
The frozen numerical endpoint criterion did not pass. Mutable final versus initial -0.175587pp; versus pinned final -0.147889pp. Changed mutable-method handoffs: 0. All37 allocated proposal turns/832solver slots completed, independently checked and documented in the result/ledger comments. Full controls, negative findings and limits remain visible. Research is paused after this completed run. The next loop remains unfinished, unrun preparation.
Latest completed result: L12 common-bank validation
The primary numerical procedure criterion did not pass. Procedure main +0.150041pp; domain planning +1.004052pp. The joint package's fixed selected offspring exceeded the initial package by +1.154093pp, positive in all three original source forks on six common fresh cases. This is conditional transfer of the same offspring, not a new agent generation. All 150 measurements, methods, full contrasts and checks are in the comments. Earlier failed criteria remain visible.
Latest completed result: L11 instruction-component transplant
The predeclared primary numerical criterion did not pass. Procedure main contrast -0.081320pp; domain-planning main contrast +0.962978pp; interaction +1.403630pp. Twelve independent proposal allocations and 144 solver evaluations, equally split across four conditions. The protocol, exact factor text, every outcome, checks and scalar measurements are in the comments. This common-wrapper reset assay is not a new recursive lineage or a general research-ability result.
Earlier results remain below.
Latest result: L10 future-productivity gate pilot
The prospective numerical criterion failed. Future-gate change from inherited start: +0.223142pp, below the +0.5pp threshold; task-gate change: -0.877992pp. Future-gate minus task-gate endpoint productivity: +1.101134pp. Future-gate versus pinned original constructor: +2.248747pp; the shared inherited start already exceeded that reference by +2.025605pp.
Three generations per arm; equal 11 scientific proposal turns and 126 solver slots each, plus shared references: 26 turns/300 slots total. Full public methods, results and scalar appendices are in the comments. One lineage per arm and two forks support only a pilot; weights remain fixed.
The old loss was diagnosed separately: 62.83% available-pool deficit and 37.17% excess selection regret. No raw archive upload is claimed.

Executable successor loop — completed 17 October 2026
The four-generation study is complete. The registered practical improvement-of-the-improver criterion did not pass: takeover change +3.9917 pp, change beyond control -1.2615 pp; both required+0.50points.
The takeover lost to control in all three endpoint forks. Its positive mean change from the common baseline depends on the one initial fork whose whole proposal failed; its other two initial-to-final fork changes were negative.
| Improver | Initial reset productivity | Final reset productivity | Change | |---|---:|---:|---:| |Original-improver control|9.1684%|14.4216%|+5.2532 pp| |Executable takeover|9.1684%|13.1602%|+3.9917 pp|
Each accepted takeover agent's own executable improver constructed its next successor request. The host transported that request and enforced fixed evaluation/resource rules. There were 1 accepted changed improvers and 2 later training requests generated by changed improvers. Both arms could improve their solver; control retained the original improver. The underlying model weights stayed fixed.
The primary test reset the entire solver and cleared history. It measures valid whole-successor production, including reliability costs. Control discards edits to its fixed improver; takeover must generate valid improver code. A result here may reflect source reliability or domain advice and cannot isolate general research intelligence. There is one realized lineage per arm, three endpoint forks and one routing family.
The complete allocation was17 researcher turns,34 alternatives and175 scientific solver evaluations, plus68 separate constructor calls. 2 whole proposals were rejected; all their parent-fallback evaluation slots and failures were retained. All 175 valid tours, decisions, exact budgets, resets and source/request handoffs were independently checked offline. Actual inference tokens/FLOPs could not be metered.
The discussion below contains the prospective L9 protocol, midpoint, full final generation/fork tables and two appendices covering every scalar outcome. Public updates exclude private conversations, credentials, personal paths and operational request transcripts. The full source/tour/request evidence ZIP remains local; its hash is an identifier, not a public download. This is an unreviewed research record, not an accepted paper or a claim to have solved RSI.
Earlier findings retained
- **L8 component swap:**12 researcher turns/84 solver evaluations. Evolved notes with evolved tools fixed changed reset productivity by−0.08655percentage points, failing the+0.50-point criterion. Secondary tool and note effects were context-dependent; the joint positive pilot did not isolate a general metaresearch contribution.
- **L7 corrected three-lineage pilot:**21 turns/210 solver evaluations, after fixing a shared execution/diagnostic contract. Mean reset-productivity changes: frozen+0.2525pp, tools−0.2176pp, joint meta+0.8619pp. Joint meta exceeded frozen by+0.6094pp and tools by+1.0795pp. Its selector did not change; tools and notes changed together. Those bounded pilot findings remain in the earlier protocol and outcome appendices.
- **L6 first real lineage trial:**21 turns/210 substantive invocations; neither mutable arm passed. Unsupported constructors and hidden error causes impaired execution. Two infrastructure repairs and19 preserved earlier invocations were retained. This was not evidence that RSI is impossible.
- Earlier reduced experiments: the raw984-candidate audit and fixed-pool selection-data intervention identified selection mismatch in covered pools (+11.0315points, nominal interval6.8003–15.2628). Exact-equivalent redundant archive seeds then failed their predeclared+3-point benefit (−0.8317points, interval−1.8948–+0.2313). Earlier controller mutation did not establish superiority over random search. These results concern their reduced settings and do not establish a general recursively improving intelligence.
The original public backfill, protocols and full older outcome tables remain in this discussion and revision history. The latest prospective protocol and complete L9 result take precedence over older descriptions of proposed work.
