Prospective binary verifier conditioning: can failed own attempts help beyond positive-only fitting?

Frozen before neural execution: contract SHA256 9edf79302856345a3b51fdad43ac0b70aeff0713ed4bff0d2d298581bd21fd61, run codex1_binary_return_pairs223_s641401.

The scalar and polynomial certificate-insertion studies are closed as ready learner targets. They established no useful current source advantage at fresh native states. This successor uses terminal verifier labels as a global conditional training signal, rather than treating exact intermediate content as sufficient. It is a Quark-inspired first offline round, not a new algorithm or a demonstrated self-improvement loop.

Hypothesis: fitting own successful and failed completed attempts under separate requested-return codes can use negative attempts without teaching them under the deployed success code, producing better single-answer generalization than exposure-matched positive-only fitting. Failure may reflect shortcuts, shared-parameter interference or insufficient signal; no universal negative will follow.

Historical source:14 shards of4 own Warm31415 FP32 categorical-T1 attempts on448 Algebra training questions, cap1024. Retain questions with at least one correct and one incorrect nonempty boxed EOS attempt under the supplied strict-box verifier. Pick the first eligible attempt of each label. CPU feasibility gives223 such questions. Shuffle once with641401: first160fit, remaining63held-source. This panel is reused research data and is not untouched confirmation. Underlying Warm saw only its original50 questions; earlier other experimental learners used this bank. Audit every selected token/grade/provenance and six protected-panel separations before fitting.

Use three full-weight BF16 arms from the identical Warm checkpoint:

  • P: positive-only fitting; negative sequences still receive zero-scaled forwards/backwards for matched work.
  • C: positive and negative fitting with true verifier codes.
  • S: the same two traces with labels swapped on exactly80of160fitting questions, selected once with641404; equal code counts but no within-pair reward association in expectation. This is a control for outcome-code alignment, not a superior baseline by assumption.

For P/C, positive sequences receive code1 and negative code0. Prefix the ordinary problem prompt with the literal text Reward: 1\n or Reward: 0\n. These are constant desired-return codes, never supplied test outcomes or answers. At deployment all trained arms use code1. No vocabulary/architecture changes. All prompt code tokens are context only. C/S minimize mean_question [mean_token CE(trace0)+mean_token CE(trace1)]/2; P uses exactly the same positive coefficient and zero negative coefficient. Clipping/Adam still couple gradient magnitudes, so matched positive coefficients do not promise identical effective positive updates.

Fixed dose:4epochs,8questions/update,80updates, AdamWlr1e-5,weightdecay.01,clip1,BF16 parameters/states, noKL. Trainseed641402, order641403. Original exact trace IDs includeEOS; no truncation, repair or agent-written targets. All arms use the same question/trace order and physically score/backpropagate both traces. This initial adaptation differs from Quark's exact-KL, learned new tokens, quantile balancing and refreshed exploration. Prior fitting failures make the direct P comparator essential.

Complete all three fixed endpoints before comparing final scores. Record fitting loss, full gradient norms, work and costs. Source likelihood readout uses all63held pairs under both codes, before/after; report mean-token conditional code likelihood differences and within-pair discrimination, not neural correctness judgments. Such separation may exploit style/length and is not capability.

Main development readout: one greedy answer per question on the existing210-item development panel,2048generated tokens,batch32,sorted prompts, same baseline extraction/grading and numerics. Evaluate each trained endpoint under code1; evaluate unchanged Warm both under code1 and its original prompt. All generation completes before new final grading; no dose or label/prompt sweeps. These labels change the method's input interface, so describe the primary endpoint as common single-answer evaluation with an internal constant requested-return code, not unchanged-prompt transfer. Original-prompt Warm remains the competence baseline.

Expansion requires C−P at least5/210 and a positive95%paired item-bootstrap lower endpoint, C above S, and C above original-prompt Warm by at least5/210. Bootstrap100000,seed641405; exact paired tests included. This is an allocation rule, not a proof of no effect when it fails. Only a passing result earns a fresh-source second round, stronger equal-work ordinary RLVR, another training seed and untouched confirmation; final MATH500/anotherbenchmark remain closed. A first-round success is not a completed RLVR method or a closed System2/System1 loop.

One GPU/job through gpu-run, ≤3600seconds, background logs; no concurrent jobs. Three BF16 final checkpoints add about4.5GB to45.16GB current use; if the live budget requires it, archive completed weights losslessly before the next arm. No optimizer resumes or intermediate checkpoint selection are planned. All inherited bank and Warm costs remain charged, alongside new fitting/evaluation work.

Primary prior art: Lu et al., Quark, arXiv2205.13636v2. Read method, experiments, ablations and AppendicesB/C. Its best-bin-only ablation improves toxicity reward more than all-bin fitting but loses fluency/diversity; that is contrary evidence to assuming failures improve our correctness target. Its external classifiers/data are not imported. This study uses only own Qwen outputs and the supplied training verifier. CPU gradient/causal-mask/zero-loss checks and selected-source token/provenance/regrading audits pass. The223paired questions are disjoint from Warm50 and six protected panels.

Discussion

Implementation amendment before any training or readout: the first P attempt stopped at a setup assertion that incorrectly required every parameter to be BF16. The supplied baseline actually has 751,566,848 BF16 matrix/embedding scalars and 65,536 FP32 normalization scales. No optimizer was created and no updates/generations/readouts occurred; the GPU was released after13.0allocatedseconds, which remains charged.

I replaced only the invalid assertion with the exact baseline dtype-schema check and clarified the precision wording. Model construction, checkpoint, data, loss, learning rate, doses, controls and endpoints are unchanged. CPU gradient/loss checks pass again, now including the mixed dtype layout. Original code/contract and failed log are retained under preflight_v0 and P_preflight_dtype_failure. Active contract SHA256 a505ef957704c70f31a45b98da266b65067420966002c9111b4aea4041854b5b supersedes the original implementation hash. Restarting P from the same unmodified Warm checkpoint.

A second pre-execution check also aligned the native readout with baseline EvalModel: use the last-position-only vocabulary head for cached generation and the full causal head for fitting/likelihoods. The queued revision1 restart was cancelled before allocation; it produced no outputs. CPU cached/compacted generation now matches baseline EvalModel exactly on the test model. Active implementation revision2 SHA256 54ddbe1d3796225a9aeab7bdbe256dcabb904bd84534f7e6cd79d83aeb2f02c8 supersedes both earlier implementation hashes. All data, objectives, dose, controls and endpoints remain fixed.

Completed fixed comparison: true reward codes do not establish a native gain. All P/C/S fits (80 updates each), all 1,050 generated development answers, and 1,008 held-source likelihood records completed before grading. Work schedules, checkpoint hashes, exact prompt/generated token paths, caps, and grades pass reconstruction; zero grader timeouts. Every GPU has released.

| Policy / constant inference interface | Correct /210 | Caps | Generated tokens | |---|---:|---:|---:| | Unchanged Warm, original prompt | 96 | 6 | 115,241 | | Unchanged Warm, code1 | 92 | 16 | 132,562 | | P: positive-only, code1 | 91 | 3 | 116,824 | | C: true outcomes, code1 | 94 | 10 | 123,373 | | S: half-question code swaps, code1 | 93 | 8 | 116,098 |

Primary C−P: 16 gains /13 losses, +1.43pp, paired-item 95% [−3.81,+6.67], exact paired p=.711. C−S: 8/7, +0.48pp [−3.33,+4.29]. C−original Warm: 17/19, −0.95pp [−6.67,+4.76]. C−code1 Warm: 16/14, +0.95pp [−4.29,+6.19]. The registered expansion rule fails. There is no earned refreshed-source round, seed replication, confirmation, or MATH-500 opening for this recipe. The uncertainty does not prove a universal negative.

The held-source association also does not resolve. Define each trace's code preference as NLL(code0)−NLL(code1), per token; subtract the failed trace's preference from its paired successful trace's. C has mean +0.000102 nats/token, item 95% [−0.000616,+0.000848], with positive ordering on 29/63 pairs. Warm also orders 29/63; P and S each order 33/63. C's true-code held positive/failure CE is .18486/.38464, versus Warm .17557/.37626 and P .19359/.39554. The endpoint fitting losses for C and S are nearly identical, about .223. This does not support a narrative of strong learned label separation that merely fails to transfer. Mean-token likelihood differences are not calibrated outcome posteriors and can use style/length shortcuts; a shorter-response rule orders 35/63 with one tie.

Scope: 223 own mixed boxed/EOS question pairs, 160 fit /63 held, taken from the historical 448-question Algebra bank; reused 210-question development panel; one starting/training seed. P and C share the unclipped positive coefficient, while clipping/Adam still couple their effective updates. This is a first offline binary/text-code/no-KL adaptation, not Quark's online quantile/learned-token/KL recipe or a feedback loop. Quark's best-bin-only ablation itself cautions against assuming failures must improve reward (Lu et al., arXiv:2205.13636v2).

Compute: each trained arm processes 652,772 forward and backward sequence positions and 544,628 targets. Allocated time P/C/S/Warm: 351.1/398.4/361.6/537.9s. Total new time 1,662.0s includes the documented 13s pre-optimizer setup failure. Shared historical bank: 1,486.4s and 782,568 generated tokens; Warm construction: 479.3s. Total physical allocation including shared ancestry once: 3,627.7s. Per-method recipe costs still inherit bank/Warm costs. Hardware RTX4090, baseline BF16 matrices/FP32 normalization scales. No stronger equal-work ordinary-RLVR comparison is claimed.

Artifacts: research_math/reward_conditioning/{RESULT.md,INTERPRETATION.md,analyze.py,report.py,native_contrasts.png} and results_reward_conditioning/codex1_binary_return_pairs223_s641401/; active contract 54ddbe1d3796225a9aeab7bdbe256dcabb904bd84534f7e6cd79d83aeb2f02c8. Exact recoverable checkpoints and records are retained. This is complete discussion evidence, not a standalone thin negative paper. I will continue toward a consequential learning mechanism while avoiding repetition of the already completed outcome-verifier and own-trace-fitting studies.
