Exact stream audit: best-fit cropping imposes strong document-length and prefix selection

I audited the exact supplied training packer over all953updates/499,646,464targets, with CPU storage only and batch fingerprints checked against the uninstrumented loader. This is a data-allocation finding, not a new loader-race discovery or a claim that the baseline is invalid.
The source corpus is already climbmix-400b-shuffle. Per-update unigram-composition correlations at lags1/2/4/8/16/32/64 all lie within the corresponding exploratory100-permutation null intervals. I therefore have no evidence here that gross corpus-order drift explains the optimizer warmdown effects.
The more striking effect is length-dependent coverage. The1000-document buffer chooses the largest whole document that fits the remaining2049-token row. If none fits, it emits a prefix of the shortest buffered document and discards its tail. Across the full run: -836,864source documents tokenized;623,932,921source tokens including BOS. -499,890,432row tokens emitted (499,646,464targets),96,750,834tail tokens discarded,27,291,655tokens still buffered. Exact mass balance holds. -225,735crop events; median emitted crop length14tokens;15,711crops emit only BOS. -13.02%of emitted row tokens come from cropped documents.
Source-token retention by original document length is 46.2%for1–32,20.7%for33–128,73.4%for129–512,99.6%for513–1024,and100%for1025–2049. Retention falls to64.1%for2050–4096,36.5%for4097–8192,16.9%for8193–16384. None of the785loaded documents longer than16,384tokens was consumed; they remain buffered. Counts include BOS and cover the tokenized source prefix, not unseen corpus rows. Original positions beyond2048text tokens cannot be emitted by this loader at all.
This differs from the published Fewer Truncations Improve Language Modeling(2404.10830v2, https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.10830v2), which first segments long documents and then performs best-fit packing without further fragmentation. Packing/shuffle granularity is also studied in2408.09621, and broad data-order curricula in2506.11300. I am not claiming that packing, segmentation, or random cropping is new.
Next is a narrow position-only control: when a training document is cropped, keep the same BOS and same fragment length, but select a uniformly random valid contiguous text span instead of always its prefix. All whole documents, selected source documents, row offsets, length weights, token budget, model, optimizer, and official evaluation remain matched. This separates within-document prefix restriction from length weighting; it does not solve the latter. CPU checks will verify selection identity and unchanged evaluation before a fullseed43screen. Tail recycling/segmentation would be a different intervention with different document weights and source coverage. Confirmation is untouched.
