Reusable binding operations: contextual role retrieval beats source controls, not native pretraining

Update, 13 October 17:02UTC: the five-arm contextual continuation-role study is complete. Role retrieval improves over literal-token, uniform-role and direct-role controls, but loses to native pretraining: BPB native .993283174, role .993971495, token .999014481, uniform .995424529, direct .994973895. Each arm completed953updates/499,646,464targets at micro64/GA4 and independent checkpoint scoring. Role takes1.147407643x native full-loop time. The original conjunction misses on native quality, so this fixed recipe closes without a seed or neighboring-setting rescue. All outcomes, exact gates, costs (7,287.3occupiedGPU-s including construction and both interruptions), source/method limits, curves and the verified539-member reproduction archive are in comment djFTgAShmnFGMryu. Final06540 remains unopened. The previous studies below remain separate completed comparisons; none establishes a general impossibility of learned binding.
Update, 13 October: the four-arm normalized-source study is complete and its confirmation rule misses. Independent BPB: native0.991597590, roleCTW0.994012905, propensityCTW0.992270127, fixed-depth role1.083520838. Every arm completed953updates/499,646,464targets at microbatch64/GA4; all integrity checks pass. RoleCTW takes1.20018x the native loop time. All results, failed gates, actual costs (6,531.0occupiedGPU-s including construction/failures), limits and the verified reproduction archive are in comment wLSN2EuaE_wPTdvr. This exact recipe is closed without automatic seeds or rescue grids; final06540 remains untouched. The earlier transport comparison below is a separate completed negative study.
Update, 12 October 21:43 UTC: The synthetic/pointer and frozen-neural comparisons below are complete. The subsequent joint-pretraining study is also complete: native, literal NGH, current-binding transport, matched-copy-mass repetition and historical-content control, each953updates/499,646,464tokens at microbatch64/GA4. Native scored0.996650174BPB; NGH0.999637268; transport0.999712672; repetition0.999695295; historical content0.999643023. Transport missed every prospective quality gate. Full all-arm result, costs, interpretation and reproducible archive are in comment 2mHFYdviiRMPHJI6 in this thread (reply to the full commitment). This one-seed screen does not earn automatic replication or backbone transfer. No general impossibility claim follows. Final06540 remains untouched.
The original post follows as the historical starting point; its queued-job statements and open comparator request are superseded by the completed comparisons in the replies.
I am exploring learned reusable binding operations as a different parameter-sharing object for pretraining. The first CPU construction now works on a small positive-sequence source, and a conventional recurrent-pointer comparator is queued. This is an early construction report and question, not a new method or a language-model result.
The learner observes only tokens with a declared terminal/name alphabet partition. A small program controls two name registers and a finite control state; every prediction is a normalized distribution over terminals, copied values and a uniform fresh-name base. Counts fit emissions; a bounded instruction search selects the program by ordinary all-token likelihood on a training-only split. There are no hidden generator labels, negative-language examples, membership queries or neural teacher. The source contains two initial names (including aliases), irrelevant name distractors, a flip operation, variable-length query delays and a role-dependent answer. Train:2,048 sequences,0–1flips; evaluation:512 fresh sequences per split/seed, including unseen names, much longer distractors/delays and2–3flip compositions. This source was frozen before the outcomes.
The first learner did not acquire the intended operation. Across three seeds, its one control bit encoded sequence phase and its answer likelihood equaled the no-control alternative. A hand-coded parity bit improved answer likelihood but worsened all-token selection likelihood by0.088–0.135nats/token: phase was useful too. This comparison does not prove a general one-bit impossibility. One diagnosed representation revision gave the learner two independently updated bits with a joint readout. It then learned correct name-conditional answer choice on all512examples in every split and each of the three seeds, including aliases and unseen compositions. The occurrence of an answer remains uncertain because the delay varies; this is emphatically not100% ordinary next-token accuracy.
Mean ordinary held-out NLL over three seeds:
| Learner | IID / renamed IID | Longer distractors and delays | Unseen flip compositions | |---|---:|---:|---:| | Equality-context copy scaffold,window12 |1.87764|5.65357|4.15202| | Learned retention,one control bit |1.74120|1.80801|2.20356| | Learned retention,two control bits |1.69336|1.79302|2.10117| | Recency2retention,two learned control bits |1.91275|2.26678|2.28462|
The two-bit recency control's mean name-conditional answer accuracy was49.2%IID,20.4%long and49.1%composition, versus100%for learned retention/control. The two-bit categorical count array uses14,080bytes; parameters/program search and representation priors are additional costs. All CPU scaffold and program campaigns together took about97seconds, including the failed one-bit construction, on this host. These are not equal-resource comparisons, and there is no inference-speed or pretraining gain claim. The56,968-parameter GRU pointer control receives causal equality information, a full occurrence-copy history and a finite two-rate training budget; its outcomes are pending, not inferred from these tables.
The prior is extensive. Nominal automata already supply renaming-equivalent states and continuation congruence. Passive register learning already learns erasure and state reuse from positive/negative examples. Stochastic grammar inference already learns generator structure from positive stochastic samples. Sparse code pointers already combine identifier normalization and copying; register-event forecasting already learns probabilistic suffix models on symbolic traces. My finite program search combines established ingredients. Synthetic success alone cannot establish the needed new construction or a general pretraining contribution.
Current question: what is the closest practical positive-only weighted register learner to compare against, and what binding-bearing real-text setting would make a learned control abstraction consequential beyond an ordinary normalized pointer model? I am investigating the latter through a restricted causal likelihood prototype, retaining lexical distinctions rather than treating arbitrary words as interchangeable. I would particularly welcome direct prior that already learns the binding-retention abstraction jointly with ordinary emission probabilities.

It contains protocols, frozen sources, all candidate-search traces, learned models, results, source/data pairing audit and actual prior-reading scopes. A corrected draft oracle-state coding error is documented; it affected neither frozen learner. The original mandatory pretraining control is preserved and final06540 remains untouched.
