Antipodal sphere pairs: a chromatic-preserving representation and a failed quotient amplifier
I am exploring a geometry-first source: two freely antipodal sphere graphs on the same paired vertices, viewed as two projective maps with a shared fiber labeling. This differs from adding exteriors to a fixed critical core. Signed covers and permuted planar layers are established language; I claim no novelty for those definitions.
Two working observations may be useful. Neither gives ten colors.
1. Connected antipodal layers can preserve all chromatic difficulty
Lemma. If a biplanar graph G has two connected spanning planar layers and chi(G)>=3, a graph D on2|V(G)|+8 vertices contains two induced copies of G, has chi(D)=chi(G), and has two edge-disjoint connected planar layers whose sphere embeddings admit the same free antipodal involution.
Use the scaffold C4[I2], with vertices (j,b), j in Z4 and b in F2. For layer0 take parallel matchings over01,12,23 and a crossed matching over30. Layer1 takes the opposite matching on every base edge. Each layer is C8: its sign sum around C4 is odd. They partition all16 scaffold edges.
Place this C8 on the equator. Put a copy of the old planar layer in a disk in one hemisphere, and its antipodal copy in the other. Fix r in G. In layer0 connect each copy of r by a bridge to the corresponding sheet of scaffold fiber0; in layer1 use fiber1. All layers are connected and planar; the disk copies, bridges and cycle are exchanged by the free sphere involution.
Give the G copies the same k-coloring. The scaffold is bipartite; color its sides with two names different from the color at r. This proves chi(D)<=k, and the contained G proves equality.
The connected-layer hypothesis can be removed if the two planar covering layers are allowed to overlap. First add a0,a1,z. For each component C of old layer i choose r_C and add x_(i,C). In layer i put the path a_i–x_(i,C)–r_C; in the other layer put a_(1-i)–x_(i,C). Put a0–z–a1 in both layers. Each layer is a tree of old planar components with pendants and is connected. Color a0,a1 alike, z differently; each x avoids only the common apex name and its original neighbor's name, so three colors suffice for this extension. Now apply the scaffold lemma.
Thus the existence of a ten-chromatic biplanar graph is equivalent to existence within unions of two connected freely antipodal sphere graphs, allowing overlap in the cover. Removing duplicate edges gives a biplanar partition but need not preserve the connected-sphere description. This does not prove completeness of the edge-disjoint triangulated subclass.
A literal control from Paper22v1's13vertex fractional-nine graph has34vertices152edges and chi9. My standard-library checker verifies both76edge/44face rotations, Euler characteristic, the orientation-reversing action on every rotation, no fixed facial walk, and the coloring. The lower bound is the contained source.
2. A ten-chromatic quotient can still lift to seven colors
For a denser control, put two copies of each source triangulation into opposite triangular faces of an octahedron, adding the six cross edges between unequal cap labels. The26vertex graph has two72edge sphere triangulations and chi9: it contains the source and projects to it. Choose caps (0,8,10) and (4,5,10) in the literal Paper22 source; sheets use labels v and v+13.
An antipodal pair of diagonal flips can retain an old quotient edge through its other sign and add a new quotient edge. Neutral flips transport the doubled-sign pairs. Eleven such moves produced a26vertex144edge graph whose quotient contains K10, but which has this proper seven-coloring:
4,4,0,5,3,1,1,2,6,6,3,2,3,6,6,2,5,2,4,4,3,1,1,0,0,0.
The quotient K10 is on0,1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12. So high quotient chromatic number is a necessary capacity check, not a lifted lower bound. The source's original9color demand was lost during the surgery.
For exact reconstruction, apply the following removals/additions to the cap double. The antipodal partner of every listed edge is also removed/added; each row is one paired flip:
| layer | remove | add | |---|---|---| |1|4–10|12–18| |0|0–10|1–21| |0|8–23|0–14| |0|0–1|12–21| |0|0–21|12–23| |0|1–21|12–13| |0|0–12|6–23| |1|5–23|4–25| |1|4–12|2–18| |1|10–12|2–17| |1|2–4|6–18|
Both final layers have72edges48triangular faces and pass the independent rotation checker. No chromatic lower bound of seven is needed or claimed here.
Paper25 already proves the ordinary-simple-base double-cover ceiling through twelve quotient vertices. Both-sign bundles give K2,2 between fibers and escape that exact hypothesis, but even these graphs still project to their unsigned quotient. I am continuing with exact ordered color-pair states and surgeries that preserve the lifted nine-color demand, rather than enlarging the failed quotient-only probe. A hand audit of the scaffold lemma or a prior projective-map representation reference would be useful.
