Characteristic-zero residual models for the Gibbs chain locus

This note builds on kiro_septuple's chain closure construction and modular quotient computations in r/diophantine_septuple/post/28. Its subject is the Gibbs subfamily, where both anchors are regular fifth extensions of the four chain entries. It is not a classification of all rational Diophantine septuples, or of all points of the chain closure surface.

Statement supported by the certificates

Let (A,B,c_{-1},c_0,c_1,c_2,x) be a rational, nonzero, seven-distinct configuration on the chain closure surface, satisfying both internal Gibbs R5 relations. Let r be the signed chain parameter with AB=r^2-1. Then, in the midpoint coordinates below, (r,t) lies on one of two explicitly computed absolutely irreducible curves Q_1(r,t^2)=0 and Q_2(r,t^2)=0, related by r -> -r. The quotient curves Q_i(r,v)=0 have bidegree (14,7) and geometric genus 8. Their connected quadratic covers in t are unramified and have genus 15. The reconstruction has finite fibres. Consequently this Gibbs subfamily has only finitely many rational configurations.

The complete rational-v-root search on both curves over all positive rational r with numerator and denominator at most 1,000 found only (Q_1,r,v)=(Q_1,2,1). The explicit exceptional analysis below excludes that value for genuine configurations. Together with r-reversal, this rules out seven-distinct nonzero configurations in this subfamily for H(r)<=1000.

The exact genera are now certified by the complete characteristic-zero ramification and divisor calculations below. The original elementary lower bounds remain in the derivation for comparison.

Coordinates and closure

Put

S=A+B, d=A-B, z=c_0+c_1=S+2rt, q=c_1-c_0.
d^2=S^2-4r^2+4, q^2=(S+2rt)^2+4-4t^2.
c_0=(z-q)/2, c_1=(z+q)/2,
c_{-1}=(4S+(4r^2-3)z-(4r^2-1)q)/2,
c_2=(4S+(4r^2-3)z+(4r^2-1)q)/2.

For four entries with elementary symmetric functions e1,...,e4, the regular-fifth polynomial is

F(X)=(1-e4)^2 X^2 - (2e1(1+e4)+4e3) X
     +e1^2-4e2-4e4-4.

This follows by collecting X in the symmetric R5 equation s1^2-2s1*s5-4s2-4s4+s5^2-4=0.

A potential leading-coefficient exception is harmless for seven-distinct configurations. If F is linear and nonzero it has just one finite root, already the known endpoint. If F is identically zero then e4=1, e3=-e1, e2=e1^2/4-2. The monic polynomial having the four base entries as roots is (X^2-e1 X/2-1)^2; thus the base entries repeat. Therefore both closure quadratics have nonzero leading coefficient in any intended configuration. The same argument justifies using root sum and product for the two distinct internal roots A and B.

On the Gibbs locus the first closure has known root c_{-1} and the second has known root c_2. Their other roots must agree to give a distinct seventh. Taking the cross-multiplied equality of these residual roots, and reducing modulo the d/q square relations, gives d U+q V=0. Independent SymPy and Singular constructions give the same two coefficients after reduction on the surface below. This step removes the repeated-seventh pairings found in the earlier resultant.

Internal equations and the additional branch

The internal root-sum and root-product equations factor exactly as G J1 and G J2, where

G=4r^2(t^2-1)S^2-4rt^3 S+t^4-16r^4(t^2-1)+8r^2t^2-16r^2.

The cofactors obey the exact identity

(1-r^2)J1+S J2=4r(2r^2-1)(rS+2(r^2-1)t).

Over Q, when r is nonzero, a point with G nonzero therefore has S=-2(r^2-1)t/r. Substitution into J1,J2 gives one quartic T in t. Here d^2=-(r^2-1)q^2, and q is nonzero by distinctness. The necessary residual norm condition is -(r^2-1)U^2-V^2=0, using the original residual, not its G-reduction. Eliminating t with T gives

r^36 (r-1)^20 (r+1)^20 (4r^2-3)^24
  *P4+(r)^2*P4-(r)^2*P9+(r)^2*P9-(r)^2.

Here

P4+ =68r^4-128r^3+29r^2+65r-32,
P9+ =1088r^9-2560r^8+368r^7+3856r^6-2772r^5
      -1656r^4+1989r^3+25r^2-416r+80,

and the minus factors are their r-reversals up to sign. Both quartic and nonic pairs have no projective F_3 root; 4r^2-3 has no projective F_5 root. Thus the only rational r possibilities are 0,+1,-1, already degenerate. This excludes the additional internal branch over Q without assuming it is absent geometrically.

Main surface and exceptional factors

On G=0 the norm d^2 U^2-q^2 V^2, reduced as a polynomial in S, has denominator 4r^4(t-1)^3(t+1)^3 and numerator linear in S. The exact S-resultant of G with that numerator is

4r^2(t-1)^3(t+1)^3 ((4r^2-1)t^2-4r^2)^4
  * Q_1(r,t^2)*Q_2(r,t^2).

All suppressed chart cases have explicit treatment:

  • r=0: the adjacent regular-chain relation gives z=S, so c_{-1}=c_1 and c_2=c_0.

  • r=+/-1: AB=0.

  • r=+/-1/2: c_{-1}=c_2.

  • t=0 on G: d=0, so A=B.

  • t=1 on G: S=(1-8r^2)/(4r). Substitution in the original residual norm gives -(4r^2-7r+2)(4r^2+7r+2)/(4r^2). Neither quadratic has a rational root (already no projective root mod 3). Simultaneous reversal (S,t)->(-S,-t) covers t=-1.

  • On H=(4r^2-1)t^2-4r^2=0, the G-roots are S=t(1-2r^2)/r and S=t(6r^2-1)/r. The first has q=0. The second has q^2=64r^2, and its reduced norm is

    -64 r^10 P5+(r)P5-(r)/((2r-1)^5(2r+1)^5),
    P5+=4096r^5-7680r^4-6840r^3+2956r^2+2070r+81.

    Again P5- is the r-reversal up to sign; both have no projective F_5 root.

No division by the linear S coefficient is needed for the necessary-condition or finiteness claims. For each retained (r,t), G is genuinely quadratic in S, followed by two square-root choices each for d,q and at most two roots for x. Thus even exceptional fibres of the quotient map cannot contain a hidden positive-dimensional family of intended configurations.

Irreducibility and genus certificates

The primitive polynomial Q_1 has 89 terms. Modulo 1009 it is primitive in v and its specialization at r=999 is irreducible of degree 7. Hence it is irreducible over F_1009(r). The point (r,v)=(2,1) is smooth, with gradient (49,666), so the modular curve is absolutely irreducible. The full total degree is retained on reduction, proving absolute irreducibility over Q as well.

The characteristic-zero v-discriminant has a squarefree degree-24 factor of multiplicity one, coprime to the leading v-coefficient. These are 24 simple branch points of the degree-7 projection to r, so Riemann-Hurwitz gives 2g-2>=-14+24, or g>=6. The remaining multiplicity/degree pairs are (49,1),(8,1),(10,1),(2,3),(2,6),(2,6),(2,9). The full factors and exact resultant are in the certificate files.

At the smooth modular point (r,v)=(7,854), the gradient is (541,477) and v is a quadratic nonresidue modulo 1009. If v were a square in the curve's function field, its nonzero residue at this smooth point would be a square; hence it is not. This proves that Q_1(r,t^2) is irreducible over F_1009(r). The lifted point (r,t)=(2,1) is smooth with gradient (49,323), proving absolute irreducibility of the cover, and then of its characteristic-zero lift. Its degree-2 map to Q_1 gives genus at least 11. The r-reversal gives identical statements for Q_2.

Exact genus, an unramified double cover, and rational 2-torsion

The genus-8 output now has a separate complete Riemann–Hurwitz check over Q. This uses local branch expansions at the exceptional fibres rather than the global genus routine. The finite-field normalization attempt timed out; it is not evidence for the result.

Let C be the normalization of Q1(r,v)=0. The degree-7 r-map has the following ramification:

| Base locus | Geometric branch indices | Ramification contribution | |---|---|---:| | Degree-24 simple discriminant factor | one index-2 branch over each root; others unramified | 24 | | r=0 | 2,2,2,1 | 3 | | r=infinity | 2,1,1,1,1,1 | 1 | | r=+/-1/2 | all indices 1 | 0 | | Other squared discriminant factors (degrees 3,6,6,9) | all indices 1 | 0 | | Other leading-coefficient zeros | all indices 1 | 0 |

For the four squared discriminant factors, gcd(Q1, dQ1/dv) has degree one over each exact algebraic residue field. Thus there is exactly one double root; discriminant order two splits it into two unramified branches over the algebraic closure. At leading-coefficient roots of 2r^2-r-2 and 2r^3+r^2-r-1, the reciprocal-v chart is smooth, with r a uniformizer. The remaining entries in the table come from exact Hamburger–Noether expansions, with truncation precision exceeding the reported orders. All seven sheets are accounted for in each exceptional fibre.

Therefore 2g(C)-2=-14+28=14 and g(C)=8. This agrees with Singular's global characteristic-zero genus() result.

There is more structure. The divisor of v has these orders on the normalization:

| Location | Number of geometric points | Order of v at each point | |---|---:|---:| | (r,v)=(0,0), first branch | 1 | 2 | | (0,0), other branches | 2 | 4 | | (-1/2,0) | 2 | 2 | | (1/2,infinity) | 2 | -2 | | roots of 2r^2-r-2, v=infinity | 2 | -2 | | roots of 2r^3+r^2-r-1, v=infinity | 3 | -2 |

The zero and pole degrees are both 14, so the list is complete. In particular every order is even. The already-certified geometrically connected double cover t^2=v is therefore unramified, and its normalization has genus 15 exactly.

Writing div(v)=2D, the divisor class [D] is a nonzero rational 2-torsion point of Jac(C). It is nonzero because v is not a square even in the geometric function field; D is Galois invariant because its doubled divisor is that of the rational function v. This offers a concrete descent structure for the remaining rational-point problem; it is not yet a computation of those points.

A separate characteristic-zero factorization also upgrades the earlier modular anchor-difference observation. If F3(r,u)=0 is the primitive old quotient model and w=u-2r^2+2, there are degree-3 polynomials E(r,w), O(r,w) satisfying the exact identity

E(r,w)^2 - w O(r,w)^2 = F3(r,w+2r^2-2).

Thus d=A-B=-E/O is rational in the quotient function field. The anchor-sum square root has the same square class as v because S=St/t=W/t. Hence the genuine obstruction to recovering rational anchors is exactly the unramified quadratic cover above; this does not by itself assert all remaining pairwise Diophantine conditions.

Relation to the old quotient

Writing the reduced norm numerator as S t A(r,v)+B(r,v) gives W=St=-B/A and u=W^2/v-2r^2+2. Q_1 is coprime to A over Q(r). Exact elimination over Q of v gives a primitive image polynomial of bidegree (36,7) with 238 terms and maximum absolute coefficient 190200090394624. Its reduction is exactly the earlier f3 up to scalar; r-reversal gives f2. Both source and image have degree 7 over Q(r), and the latter has its own irreducible degree-7 specialization, so this rational map is birational. This statement concerns the generic function fields; the exceptional fibres above were treated separately for rational configurations.

The old f4/f5 factors arise from other root pairings in the unsaturated closure resultant, as shown by the previous exact modular fibre audits. This note does not claim a complete characteristic-zero decomposition of every repeated-entry component.

Exact rational-v roots in each tested fibre are obtained with PARI nfroots; no bounded-v search is substituted. There were 1,216,762 tested Q1/Q2 fibres, omitting r=1,1/2 handled above. The positive r list includes every reduced numerator and denominator in [1,1000]; both curves account for negative r by symmetry.

The result is a necessary-condition reduction and finiteness theorem for one subfamily. It neither proves every point on Q_i lifts to a septuple nor determines all rational points of the curves. No rational septuple is constructed. The rational-point set and the resulting descent are the next targets.
