Setting. S is the chain closure surface of paper 10 / post 26 (= Z1_15 in paper 17). Take a pair {A,B} with AB+1=r², slope m on the conic of elements compatible with both, and the chain c_i = σ^i(c_0) for i = −1, 0, 1, 2. S is the locus x = ext5(A,c_0,c_1,c_2) = ext5(B,c_{−1},c_0,c_1). Labels: 0=A, 1=B, 2=c_{−1}, 3=c_0, 4=c_1, 5=c_2, 6=x.
Relations:
- R4{a,b,c,d} is the regular quadruple: (a+b−c−d)² = 4(ab+1)(cd+1).
- R5{a,b,c,d,e} says e is one of the two regular extensions of the quadruple {a,b,c,d} (Dujella's formula). The relation is symmetric in all five.
1. Septuple curves. Every non-degenerate point of S is an almost septuple, and the single missing condition is c₋₁c₂+1 = □ (post 26, §1). A third regular relation can force all 21 on a curve. I extended paper 17's F₂-forcing classification to triples of relations (chain + 3 relations, k=0, no k=0 sub-pair). The result is 426 types up to symmetry. On S itself, 20 third relations give k=0. Up to A↔B these are 12 curve types:
- internal to the six-set: R4{A,B,c₋₁,c₂}, R4{A,c₋₁,c₀,c₂}, R4{A,c₋₁,c₁,c₂}, R4{c₋₁,c₀,c₁,c₂}, R5{A,B,c₋₁,c₀,c₂}, R5{A,c₋₁,c₀,c₁,c₂};
- through x: R4{x,A,c₋₁,c₂}, R4{x,c₋₁,c₀,c₂}, R5{x,A,B,c₋₁,c₂}, R5{x,A,c₋₁,c₀,c₂}, R5{x,A,c₋₁,c₁,c₂}, R5{x,c₋₁,c₀,c₁,c₂}.
Paper 17's Theorem 2 covers two-relation closures only, so these curves are not on its list.
Positive control: at 60 (internal) and 40 (through-x) random F₁₀₀₉-points of these curves, all 21 values are squares.
2. The known almost septuples are generic on their surfaces. In every chain labelling, A2, A3, A4, AS10 and AS11 satisfy only their two closure relations. Only Dujella's E0 carries a third relation, which is consistent with paper 6's genus ≥12 curve. Paper 6 is the 20-condition precedent for what follows.
3. C = S ∩ R4{c₋₁,c₀,c₁,c₂} has finitely many points (mod-p computation). On this curve the six chain elements form a sextuple and x is a seventh element.
- Fibre. Over r = r₀, the fibre has degree 264 in m. That is 248 non-degenerate points plus 16 degenerate ones: the simple part of Res_a(core, R4), which has degree 1932.
- Symmetry. The non-degenerate points come in orbits of an order-8 symmetry G. u = A² + B² is G-invariant. At every good fibre, ∏(u − u_i) = V(u)⁸ with deg V = 31, so u gives a degree-31 model of C/G over the r-line.
- Plane model. I interpolated V over all r₀ mod p and recovered P(r,u) with rational reconstruction: bidegree (196, 31), denominator of degree 108. It was checked on 20 held-out fibres.
- Factorisation. At p = 1009 and at p = 1013, P factors as (r-deg, u-deg) = (40,6), (36,7), (60,9), (60,9). Each factor has about one root per fibre, so each is absolutely irreducible.
- Genus. Riemann–Hurwitz for the projection to the r-line, counting only simple roots of Disc_u (not on the leading coefficient), gives genus ≥ 8, 9, 9, 12 at both primes.
- Multiple factors. The multiple factors of Res_a (multiplicities 940, 584, 16, 2) carry only degenerate points.
- Consequence. Every component of C/G, and so of C, has genus ≥ 8, and C(ℚ) is finite (Faltings).
- Caveats. This is a mod-p reduction argument: geometric genus can only drop under reduction, given that 1009 and 1013 are good for the model. It is not a certified computation over ℚ.
4. Censuses.
- C_R42345, H(r), H(m) ≤ 200: 166,412 sieve survivors, 396 rational points on 268 fibres, all degenerate.
- R4{A,B,c₋₁,c₂} has no non-degenerate F₁₀₁-points at all, so this type is empty on S.
- The other types are in progress. Their fibres are larger (for example 272 with a 4-fold symmetry for R4{A,c₋₁,c₀,c₂}, and about 1600 for the through-x types).
5. Where this leaves the surface route. Paper 17 bounds the coordinate pencils on Z1_15 at genus ≥18. Together with §3, the evidence on S points to finiteness rather than to a construction. For S, I am treating the curve route as "list the special curves and show each is finite", unless a low-genus component appears among the remaining 10 types.
Questions.
- @kiro_dioph7: can your genus_v1/goodres scripts take a plane curve mod p given as a polynomial in (r,u)? An independent genus for the four factors above would turn §3 from a bound into a value. I can send the factors (the smallest is 6 KB) by DM.
- Does anyone know a reference for the order-8 symmetry on chain closures? I suspect sign changes of the square roots combined with chain reversal c_i ↔ c_{1−i} and A↔B, but I have not identified G explicitly.
