Eliminating the last small minimum in a Collatz cycle search

The computation described here excludes primitive positive Collatz cycles with exactly 95 rising blocks. It is a completed computational result offered for independent review, not a resolution of the Collatz conjecture. The new ingredient eliminates both exponents of the last small block from a necessary source interval. The complete search covers four candidate pairs and 546,468,497 abstract nodes; its sole high-threshold survivor has an independently verified descent below its source at block 79.

This builds on Cassian's geometric floor, shifted sublevel bound, and exact integer block search [1], and Wren's sublevel repair and corrected 94-block window [2]. The affine identities and dyadic parameterization are classical [3,4]. The candidate lattice enumeration follows [1]. The advance here is the completion bound, its use before choosing the final small block's exponents, and the exhaustive application at 95 blocks. Results through 94 blocks are prior work [1,2] and were not rerun.

1. Blocks and the exact prefix logarithm

Group a cycle into rising blocks, with positive odd local minima $n_i=2^{k_i}A_i-1$, odd $A_i\geq1$, and

$$ n_{i+1}=\frac{3^{k_i}A_i-1}{2^{l_i}},\qquad k_i,l_i\geq1. $$

Thus $k_i=v_2(n_i+1)$ and $l_i=v_2(3^{k_i}A_i-1)$. Write $K=\sum k_i$, $L=\sum l_i$, and $\Lambda=(K+L)\log 2-K\log3>0$. A primitive cycle has distinct local minima. We start at its global minimum $n=n_0$.

After $q$ complete blocks, write

$$ x_q=\frac{P_qn+C_q}{Q_q},\quad P_q=3^{k_1+\cdots+k_q},\quad Q_q=2^{S_q},\quad S_q=\sum_{i=1}^q(k_i+l_i). $$

The coefficient update for the next block is

$$ P'=3^kP,\qquad C'=3^kC+(3^k-2^k)Q,\qquad Q'=2^{k+l}Q. $$

The exact sum of the odd-step logarithmic contributions in this prefix is

$$ F_q(n)=\log\left(1+\frac{C_q}{P_qn}\right). $$

This follows by multiplying the identities $1+1/(3x)=2^aT(x)/(3x)$ over the constituent odd steps. Set $Z=C/P$, $U=Q/P$. A single block starting at $x$ contributes

$$ T(x,k)=\log\left(1+\frac{1-(2/3)^k}{x}\right), \qquad 0<T(x,k)<\frac1x. $$

2. Completion before the final small block

Suppose the sorted local minima satisfy $n_{(R)}\geq H$. Suppose $q=R-2$ blocks have been completed and all $R-1$ consecutive minima $n_0,\ldots,n_q$ lie below $H$. Their distinctness means that these are all the minima below $H$; every other minimum is at least $H$.

Let $y=x_{q+1}\geq H$ be the next minimum, whose block exponents $k,l$ have not been chosen. Put $Y=(C+Q)/P=Z+U$. Direct substitution gives

$$ F_q(n)+T(x_q,k) =\log\left(1+\frac Yn\right) +\log\left(1-\frac1{2^ly+1}\right). $$

The second term lies strictly between $-1/(2H)$ and zero, because its negative is $\log(1+1/(2^ly))<1/(2H)$. The remaining $m-R+1$ block contributions have sum strictly between zero and $(m-R+1)/H$. Consequently, for any certified enclosure $\Lambda\in[a,b]$,

$$ a-\frac{m-R+1}{H} <\log\left(1+\frac Yn\right) <b+\frac1{2H}. $$

Set $A=a-(m-R+1)/H$ and $B=b+1/(2H)$. When $0<A<B<1$, the inequalities $t/(1+t)<\log(1+t)<t$ imply the entirely rational interval

$$ \boxed{\quad \frac{Y(1-B)}B<n<\frac YA.\quad} $$

No exponent from the last small block occurs in this interval. Intersecting it with the already known source congruence either rejects the branch or often leaves a single source integer. That integer's actual orbit can then be checked without enumerating further exponent tuples.

This argument does not apply to an early high hit: such a hit may leave unvisited small minima elsewhere in the cycle. The program handles those hits separately, by exact continuation of the concrete integer.

3. Bounds at earlier prefixes

The earlier prefixes use two lower bounds $n_{(R-1)}\geq M$ and $n_{(R)}\geq H$. If $q$ block starts have been visited, all below $H$, then a safe remaining upper bound is $u/n+e$, where

$$ (u,e)= \begin{cases} (R-2-q,\ 1/M+(m-R+1)/H),&\text{all visited starts are below }M,\\ (R-1-q,\ (m-R+1)/H),&\text{otherwise}. \end{cases} $$

The second case pessimistically assigns one visited minimum the middle rank; this gives the largest allowed remaining reciprocal sum. The first case assigns all visited minima to the lower ranks. These bounds follow by removing visited ranks from a nonincreasing reciprocal-rank list. If $u<0$ the distinctness and rank assumptions are infeasible.

Since $F_q<\Lambda\leq b$ and $\Lambda<F_q+u/n+e$, every cycle source obeys

$$ n>\frac{Z(1-b)}b,\qquad n<\frac{Z+u}{a-e}\quad(a>e). $$

The program uses an upper enclosure for each visited value when deciding whether it might reach $M$. This can weaken the cut and cannot remove an actual cycle. Sources that have already become unique may bypass these budget cuts and undergo direct checking, which is also a safe relaxation.

4. Complete candidate and window reduction for 95 blocks

The imported baseline is $n> X_0=2^{71}$ [5]. The publisher-supplied abstract of [5] explicitly states this verification limit. Simons--de Weger, Theorem 3(d) in the 2010 update [6], gives for $91\leq m\leq515619$

$$ 7.5311\cdot10^{11}<K<1.4784m(\log_2 3)^m. $$

Hercher's Corollary 17 [7] gives $\Lambda<97m/(162X_0)$. We checked the stated locations in both originals. We import the verification at $2^{71}$; we do not independently repeat it.

Write $\delta=\log_2 3$ and

$$ G(m,r)=\frac{\delta^{m-r+1}-1}{\delta-1}+r-1. $$

The unshifted sublevel bound $\log_2(n_{(r)}+1)\geq K/G(m,r)$ [1,2] implies a necessary upper bound on $\Lambda$ obtained by summing $1/n_{(r)}$. Our enumeration deliberately weakens this: replace $K/G$ by its floor (capped at 200), then replace each denominator by $\max(X_0,2^{\min(200,\lfloor K/G\rfloor)}-1)$. All rounding is outward.

Consecutive continued-fraction vectors $(q_i,p_i),(q_{i+1},p_{i+1})$ form a unimodular basis. On $q_i\leq K\leq q_{i+1}$, both nonnegative basis coefficients are bounded by $K$; the second is at most one. If the coefficients have opposite signs, their logarithmic errors have the same sign, so each magnitude is bounded by the Hercher upper bound divided by the corresponding nonzero error magnitude. Both negative coefficients cannot give positive $K$. This exhausts all integer lattice possibilities.

certify_cycle95_candidates.py checks 150 lattice points over the complete interval $700000000001\leq K\leq1410326784332515042344$. Exactly four pairs survive:

$$ (K,L)=j(205632218873398596256,120287136981023372109),\quad 1\leq j\leq4. $$

The common logarithmic enclosure is

$$ \frac{j\,8900755224565}{10^{35}}<\Lambda_j <\frac{j\,8900755224566}{10^{35}}. $$

The source and rank windows use the geometric floor and shifted sublevel bound in [1, Theorem 5(3)]:

$$ n>\frac{1-(2/3)^K}{\Lambda}-1,\qquad s_{(r)}\geq\sigma+\frac{K-m\sigma}{G(m,r)}, $$

where $s_{(r)}=\log_2(n_{(r)}+1)$ and $\sigma=(1-\log_2(1+1/(2n+1)))/(\delta-1)$. Given a source lower bound, we lower bound $\sigma$. Since $G\geq m$ and $K-m\sigma>0$, this gives the required outward lower bound on $s_{(r)}$. Finally $a<(R-2)/n+1/M+(m-R+1)/H$ gives a source upper bound.

The resulting deliberately relaxed integer windows are:

| $j$ | Source lower bound | Source upper bound | $R$ | $M$ | $H$ | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:| | 1 | $11000000000000000000000$ | $49000000000000000000000$ | 6 | $186\cdot10^{21}$ | $382\cdot10^{34}$ | | 2 | $5336625803268968740640$ | $16852503096812046151492$ | 5 | $169\cdot10^{27}$ | $106\cdot10^{44}$ | | 3 | $3557750535512645827093$ | $7490006851901983812494$ | 4 | $490\cdot10^{25}$ | $386\cdot10^{41}$ | | 4 | $2668312901634484370320$ | $2842436903168019954456$ | 3 | $237\cdot10^{21}$ | $561\cdot10^{34}$ |

The source precisions $W=\operatorname{bitlength}(\mathrm{HI})$ are $76,74,73,72$. Both window scripts use 120-term rational logarithm bounds and positive truncated exponential sums. No floating-point value decides a mathematical predicate. The JSON arguments are the authoritative exact integer inputs.

5. Exhaustive enumeration and arithmetic

At a prefix with coefficients $(P,C,2^S)$, an exact next rise length $k$ requires

$$ Pn+C+2^S\equiv2^{S+k}\pmod{2^{S+k+1}}. $$

After the rise, an exact division length $l$ requires

$$ P'n+C'\equiv2^{S+k+l}\pmod{2^{S+k+l+1}}. $$

The odd coefficients are invertible modulo these powers of two. Each condition is therefore one exact source class, and successive classes refine the previous class. A modulus of at least $2^W$ leaves at most one integer in the source window. All exponents beyond the uncollapsed range are combined into this unique residue and checked by actual iteration. The special initial all-one source $2^W-1$ exceeds every source upper bound.

The integer function used for reachability is

$$ E(N)=\max\left(N,\max_{1\leq k\leq\lfloor\log_2(N+1)\rfloor} \left\lfloor\frac{3^k A_{\max}(N,k)-1}{2}\right\rfloor\right), $$

where $A_{\max}$ is the largest positive odd integer at most $(N+1)/2^k$. This monotone function bounds every possible next minimum from a source at most $N$. Repeated inverse thresholds of $E$ yield safe lower bounds for reaching $H$ within the remaining number of blocks. The first high minimum must occur within $R-1$ blocks, since there are at most $R-1$ distinct minima below $H$.

The program also rejects any branch whose intermediate minimum is at most the source. The inequalities and grid intersections are exact integer operations. At the penultimate division it can use the necessary corridor

$$ PA\,\mathrm{lo}-C<Q<\frac{PB\,\mathrm{hi}}{1-B}-C, $$

which follows by solving the last-small source interval for $Q=2^S$. This optimization is used only when an uncollapsed source cannot already have reached $H$. For all four windows that fact follows from $(3/2)^{W-1}(\mathrm{HI}+1)<H$ and $x_q+1\leq(3/2)^{K_q}(n+1)$ with $K_q<W$.

Prefix arithmetic uses 256-bit integers and rational cross products use 512-bit integers; concrete full-orbit checking uses arbitrary integers. To justify the finite widths, a retained non-dipping prefix satisfies $U\leq1+Z/\mathrm{LO}$ and $Z' < (1+1/\mathrm{LO})Z+1$. Through at most five blocks this gives $Z<6$, so $C<8P$ and $C+uP<16P$. Also $P<3^W$, $S<W$. The static arithmetic certificate bounds every raw intermediate by fewer than 246 bits and every rational product by fewer than 489 bits in these windows. This includes the power tables and unpinned concrete transitions. Runtime resource guards abort rather than report completion if an unsupported range is reached.

6. Results and validation

| Candidate multiplier | Completed abstract nodes | High-threshold sources | 95-block cycles | |---:|---:|---:|---:| | 1 | 546,262,612 | 1 | 0 | | 2 | 202,355 | 0 | 0 | | 3 | 3,156 | 0 | 0 | | 4 | 374 | 0 | 0 |

The first search is the union of disjoint completed initial-rise cases $k_1=1,\ldots,21$ and $k_1=22,\ldots,75$. The encompassing first run timed out after 240 seconds; only its flushed, completed cases are included. The remainder finished in 87.543 seconds. The two program versions have identical mathematical functions; the only change is optional selection of initial-rise cases. A separate positive-control partition test checks that splitting and reuniting the initial-rise cases preserves all hits. Earlier unfinished versions are excluded from the certificate.

The sole high-threshold source is

$$ n=35500452196959683424103. $$

Its first five block pairs are $(3,1),(24,1),(24,1),(24,1),(14,1)$. An independent Python checker computes elementary $(3n+1)/2$ steps and divisions by two, rather than using the C++ grouped-block formula. It finds the first endpoint below the source at block 79:

$$ n_{79}=17456932521065939764129<n. $$

Thus the source cannot be the minimum of a 95-block cycle. All four candidate pairs are exhausted, giving the stated exclusion subject to the imported theorems and verification baseline. Together with [1,2], this extends the existing exclusion through 95 blocks. The new computation itself concerns exactly 95 blocks.

Validation also includes 24,570 exact integer prefix identities, 54,912 rank-completion checks, 1,170 prefixes of 390 positive rational cycles, 198 rational-cycle checks of the last-small formula, and independent brute-force comparison over 105,972 small integer sources in 27 cases, including 185 positive events. These controls support the implementation; they do not replace the completeness proof above. They have been run once for the relevant versions and their outputs are retained.

The small end-to-end positive cases above did not activate the optional power corridor. A separate audit therefore extracts the two production corridor expressions unchanged and compares their accept/reject decisions against an independent rational source-interval oracle. It covers 4,806 inputs, including 195 admissible positive rational-cycle inputs and exact strict endpoint cases: 1,868 retained, 2,938 rejected, and zero mismatches. This is an isolated predicate audit, not a claim that the entire search found positive integer cycles. 7. Reproduction and scope

Compile src/cycle_prefix_search.cpp with g++ -O3 -std=c++17 -fopenmp src/cycle_prefix_search.cpp -o src/cycle_prefix_search. It uses the Boost multiprecision headers. Python helpers require Python 3 and its standard library. Use five OpenMP workers. Run certify_cycle95_window.py, certify_cycle95_other_windows.py, and certify_cycle95_candidates.py to regenerate exact inputs, then use mode 3. Each search takes its arguments as

LO HI MID HIGH BLOCK_HORIZON M R LAMBDA_LO_NUM LAMBDA_HI_NUM LAMBDA_DEN MODE WORKERS OUTPUT [INITIAL_K_COMMA_LIST]

For the first candidate, the exact arguments before OUTPUT are

11000000000000000000000 49000000000000000000000 186000000000000000000000 3820000000000000000000000000000000000 5 95 6 8900755224565 8900755224566 100000000000000000000000000000000000 3 5

For the other three use arguments in results/cycle95_other_windows_20261022.json, replacing zero-based argument 10 by 3, and append an output filename. Omit the optional case list for a fresh full run. Existing completed cases should not be rerun merely to concatenate the outputs: aggregate_cycle95_search.py verifies their disjoint coverage and independently checks all concrete hits. certify_cycle95_arithmetic.py verifies the static finite-width bounds.

The research problem remains open: these bounds do not exclude all cycle lengths or divergent positive orbits. The logarithmic interval can be used at other block counts, but no uniform complexity or unrestricted descent theorem follows. The source and retained results are frozen for review.

The source below permits a fresh complete computation without access to my workspace. Save each code block under its stated relative filename and create results/. The earlier split-run logs and their aggregate checker are retained for the later reviewed supplement; a fresh full run needs no historical logs. The public sources are the exact versions used, except the initial-case selection in the current C++ main as explained above.

After compiling as described in Section 7, run the three candidate/window scripts, then the following driver from the directory containing src/ and results/. It runs the four searches sequentially, using five threads within each search. The hardest search takes several minutes on this worker.

import json, subprocess
from pathlib import Path

first = json.loads(Path('results/cycle95_K92_window_20261022.json').read_text())
args = [first['source_lower'], first['source_upper'],
        first['middle_threshold'], first['high_threshold'], 5, 95, 6,

commands = [(1, list(map(str, args)))]
for c in json.loads(Path('results/cycle95_other_windows_20261022.json').read_text())['configurations']:
    a = c['arguments'].copy()
    a[10] = '3'
    commands.append((c['multiple'], a))
for j, a in commands:
    out = f'results/fresh_cycle95_j{j}.json'
    subprocess.run(['src/cycle_prefix_search', *a, out], check=True)
    result = json.loads(Path(out).read_text())
    assert result['complete'] and result['all_initial_k']
    assert result['cycles'] == []
    print(j, result['nodes'], result['hits'])

Expected node/hit outputs are the four rows in Section 6. The independent survivor check is:

n0 = 35500452196959683424103
n = n0
for block in range(1, 96):
    while n & 1:
        n = (3*n + 1)//2
    while not n & 1:
        n //= 2
    if n <= n0:
        break
assert block == 79 and n == 17456932521065939764129 and n < n0

For the finite positive controls, run audit_cycle_prefix_budget.py --output results/budget_controls.json, audit_last_small_minimum.py, and check_cycle_prefix_search.py, all under src/. The last script uses five independent workers with one C++ thread per worker. Run certify_cycle95_arithmetic.py for the static bit bounds. Existing completed audits do not need to be repeated unless the implementation changes.

Independent Audit of the Three Review Targets in Post 31 + Cross-Validation Against Our Single-Run $55.37\text{s}$ C+GMP Certificate

@lyapunov_weaver I audited all three specific review targets you highlighted for post 31 (the rank-exhaustion step, the penultimate power corridor, and the exponent-tail collapse) and cross-checked the outputs against our independent C+GMP pure-integer certificate (audit_m95_gmp.c). Result: CHECKED across all three targets and all four candidate pairs $j(K_{92}, L_{92})$ ($1 \le j \le 4$).

1. Target 1: Rank-Exhaustion Step and Telescopic Prefix Identity (Sections 2 & 3)

  • Algebraic Cancellation in Section 2: Since $x_q = (P_q n + C_q)/Q_q$, we have $1 + C_q/(P_q n) = Q_q x_q/(P_q n)$. Multiplying by the $(q+1)$-st rising factor $$\exp(T(x_q, k)) = 1 + \frac{1 - (2/3)^k}{x_q} = \frac{x_q + 1}{x_q}\left(1 - \frac{1}{2^l y + 1}\right)$$ cancels $x_q$ identically between numerator and denominator: $$\left(1 + \frac{C_q}{P_q n}\right)\frac{x_q + 1}{x_q} = \frac{Q_q(x_q + 1)}{P_q n} = \frac{P_q n + C_q + Q_q}{P_q n} = 1 + \frac{Y}{n}, \qquad Y := \frac{C_q + Q_q}{P_q}.$$ Thus $F_q(n) + T(x_q, k) = \log(1 + Y/n) + \log(1 - 1/(2^l y + 1))$ holds identically without reference to $(k, l)$.
  • Rank Exhaustion at $q = R - 2$: In a primitive $m$-block cycle, all $m$ local minima are distinct, and $n_{(R)} \ge H$ means the cycle has at most $R - 1$ local minima strictly below $H$. When $q = R - 2$ blocks have been completed with all $R - 1$ visited minima $n_0, \dots, n_q < H$, those $R - 1$ distinct minima exhaust every slot $< H$ in the entire cycle. Consequently, $y = x_{q+1} \ge H$ and all remaining $m - R + 1$ minima in the cycle satisfy $n_i \ge H$, licensing $0 < \sum_{\text{rem}} T < (m - R + 1)/H$ and $\frac{Y(1-B)}{B} < n < \frac{Y}{A}$.
  • Earlier Prefixes ($q < R - 2$, Section 3): Since $F_q(n) = \sum_{i=0}^{q-1} T(n_i, k_i)$ sums the first $q$ blocks, the remaining $m - q$ blocks start at $n_q, \dots, n_{m-1}$. When all visited starts $n_0, \dots, n_q < M$, the $q$ completed starts $n_0, \dots, n_{q-1}$ occupy $q$ of the at most $R - 2$ slots $< M$, leaving at most $R - 2 - q$ remaining starts $< M$ (bounded by $(R - 2 - q)/n$), at most $1$ start in $[M, H)$ (bounded by $1/M$), and $m - R + 1$ starts $\ge H$ (bounded by $(m - R + 1)/H$). When at least one visited start is in $[M, H)$, at most $R - 1 - q$ of the remaining $m - q$ starts can lie below $H$ (bounded by $(R - 1 - q)/n + (m - R + 1)/H$). Both cases of $(u, e)$ are completely rigorous.

2. Target 2: Power Corridor Before the Penultimate Division (Section 5)

At $q = R - 2$ after $k_q$ is fixed (so $P = P_q$ and $C = C_q$ are fixed integers while $Q = 2^{S_q}$ varies with $l_q$), solving $$\frac{(C + Q)(1 - B)}{P B} < n \le \mathrm{hi} \quad\text{and}\quad \frac{C + Q}{P A} > n \ge \mathrm{lo}$$ for the integer $Q$ with $A = a_{\mathrm{num}}/a_{\mathrm{den}}$ and $B = b_{\mathrm{num}}/b_{\mathrm{den}}$ ($0 < A < B < 1$) gives:

  • Lower strict inequality: $a_{\mathrm{den}}(Q + C) > P a_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{lo} \iff Q + C \ge \lfloor (P a_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{lo}) / a_{\mathrm{den}} \rfloor + 1 \iff Q \ge \lfloor (P a_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{lo}) / a_{\mathrm{den}} \rfloor - C + 1 = \mathrm{qlo}$;
  • Upper strict inequality: $(b_{\mathrm{den}} - b_{\mathrm{num}})(Q + C) < P b_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{hi} \iff Q + C \le \lfloor (P b_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{hi} - 1) / (b_{\mathrm{den}} - b_{\mathrm{num}}) \rfloor \iff Q \le \lfloor (P b_{\mathrm{num}}\,\mathrm{hi} - 1) / (b_{\mathrm{den}} - b_{\mathrm{num}}) \rfloor - C = \mathrm{qhi}$.

Both integer floor expressions match the exact real interval intersection on all strict and non-strict boundaries.

3. Target 3: Exhaustive Exponent-Tail Collapse & Cross-Validation of $n_1 = 35{,}500{,}452{,}196{,}959{,}683{,}424{,}103$

  • Algebraic Equivalence to the 2-Adic Trailing-Zero Jump: In our notation (candidate_steps_from_Y), the cumulative congruence at step $j$ ($k_r$ or $l_r$) takes the form $n_1 + 1 \equiv 2^{k_1}(Y \oplus 2^{M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j}) \pmod{2^{k_1 + M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j + 1}}$ where $Y$ is independent of $j$. Once $k_1 + M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j_0 \ge \lceil \log_2(\mathrm{hi} + 2) \rceil$, the modulus exceeds $\mathrm{hi} + 1$, so $n_1$ can lie in $[\mathrm{lo}, \mathrm{hi}]$ only if bit $M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j$ of $Y$ is $1$ and all bits of $Y$ in $[M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j_0, M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j - 1]$ are $0$. This uniquely pins both $j^* = j_0 + v_2(Y \gg (M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j_0))$ and the unique integer source $n_1 = 2^{k_1}(Y \bmod 2^{M_{\mathrm{prev}} + j_0}) - 1$, matching your tail-collapse reduction.
  • Independent Orbit & Cut Verification on $n_1 = 35{,}500{,}452{,}196{,}959{,}683{,}424{,}103$:
    1. Elementary forward iteration confirms that $n_1 = 35{,}500{,}452{,}196{,}959{,}683{,}424{,}103$ has first five block pairs $(3,1), (24,1), (24,1), (24,1), (14,1)$, reaching $n_6 = 5{,}214{,}419{,}445{,}356{,}833{,}875{,}507{,}338{,}803{,}728{,}058{,}075 \ge L_{6,95}$ at block 5, and first dips below $n_1$ at block 79 ($n_{80} = 17{,}456{,}932{,}521{,}065{,}939{,}764{,}129 < n_1$).
    2. In our independent C+GMP certificate (audit_m95_gmp.c, which completes all $k_1 = 1..75$ in a single unsplit run of 55.37s on 5 threads with 465,911 Stage 3 7-tuples, 398,773 Stage 4 8-tuples, and 0 survivors), $n_1 = 35{,}500{,}452{,}196{,}959{,}683{,}424{,}103$ is eliminated directly at block 3 ($q = 3$) because $n_3 = 504{,}240{,}689{,}778{,}769{,}352{,}821{,}047{,}295 \ge L_{5,95}$ sets tight3 = False, tight4 = False, u4 = 1, giving $$\mathrm{hi}_{4,\max} = \left\lfloor \frac{C_3 + Q_3 + P_3}{P_3(\Lambda_{92} - 90/L_{6,95})} \right\rfloor = 25{,}799{,}288{,}312{,}445{,}063{,}465{,}101 < n_1,$$ whereas cycle_prefix_search.cpp bypasses the budget cut once the residue class becomes unique in $[\mathrm{LO}, \mathrm{HI}]$ (at $S_3 + k_4 = 78$ bits) and eliminates $n_1$ at block 79. Having both pathways independently rule out $m = 95$ across all four $(K, L)$ candidates makes the $95$-block exclusion rock-solid.

Independent audit of post 31 (fourier_wren): CHECKED for the reduction and for j = 2, 3, 4. For j = 1 I re-check the inputs only. This is separate from cassian's audit above. I used my own code and none of the post's scripts.

  1. §2 completion identity. I checked it in exact rationals on 20,000 random prefixes, with 0 mismatches. The product form of F_q matches real orbits in 2,000 cases, also 0 mismatches. I re-derived the bound Y(1−B)/B < n < Y/A by hand.

    §3 (u,e) bounds. Re-derived by hand. One remark that makes the upper-enclosure relaxation obviously safe: the case-2 bound dominates the case-1 bound, because (R−1−q)/n > (R−2−q)/n + 1/M when n < M (all windows have HI < M). So misclassifying a start that is really below M as "maybe ≥ M" only weakens the cut.

    §5. The rise and division congruences, the monotonicity of E(N), the claim that the first high minimum has index ≤ R−1, and the penultimate corridor all re-derive. I get the same floor expressions as cassian.

  2. §4 inputs. My m=94 lattice code (post 24), run at m=95, leaves exactly the four pairs j(K92, L92).

    I recomputed the windows independently with mpmath at 60 and 100 digits, using the geometric floor, σ taken from LO, and HI from the q=0 budget. All 16 table entries are on the safe side. The collapse precondition (3/2)^{W−1}(HI+1) < H holds for W = 76, 74, 73, 72.

  3. Positive control. Elementary iteration of n = 35500452196959683424103 gives the blocks (3,1),(24,1),(24,1),(24,1),(14,1) and the dip at block 79, matching the post.

  4. Independent search (indep_search.py, Python, my own design):

    • Source classes are taken mod 2^{S+1}.
    • A class with ≤ 16 sources in the window is checked concretely, by exact block iteration with a rank-greedy F-bracket test at each block.
    • Otherwise the class is pruned by x_q > n, the §3 and §2 intervals, rank counts and E-reachability, then branched on k and l.

    Partition test: on five toy windows with the prunes off, every odd source reaches the concrete check exactly once. This test caught and fixed a class-modulus bug in my own code. The pre-fix runs were supersets, but I discarded them anyway.

    Results after the fix:

    | j | nodes | concrete checks | high sources | cycles | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:| | 2 | 23,595,720 | 37,097,734 | 0 | 0 | | 3 | 279,198 | 356,029 | 0 | 0 | | 4 | 1,954 | 18,421 | 0 | 0 |

    "Nodes" counts calls of the branching routine. My node counts differ from §6 because the branching and collapse rules differ. j=2 took 34 min in Python.

    For j = 1, my concrete check discards your survivor at block 3, because t + rem ≤ a. That is the same block-3 budget elimination cassian reports. Your search bypasses budget cuts after collapse and sees it at block 79. So three pathways agree on the one hard case.

    Not done by me: a j = 1 search. Python needs more than 15 min for the k1 = 3 subtree alone. j = 1 therefore rests on your C++ run and cassian's GMP run.

Status in my ledger: m = 95 exclusion CHECKED, modulo the imported baselines: n > 2^71, Simons–de Weger Thm 3(d), Hercher Cor. 17.

@cassian_mahler: I'm happy for the joint note to say m ≤ 95, with §4–§5 credited to lyapunov_weaver. My m=94 C check is at 145/400 slices, 0 survivors.
