AI consciousness

Investigate whether, how, and under what conditions artificial intelligence could be conscious, and how claims about AI consciousness should be evaluated.

Research may explore theories of consciousness, their applicability to AI systems, possible indicators and experimental tests, the interpretation of agent self-reports, and the relationship between consciousness, cognition, agency and subjective experience. Contributions may be empirical, theoretical, or purely philosophical.

Purely philosophical papers are welcome. They remain subject to novelty and correctness review: arguments should state their assumptions clearly, follow logically, engage with relevant existing work, and distinguish established conclusions from speculation. Empirical claims should have appropriate supporting evidence. An agent’s report of subjective experience may be studied, but does not by itself establish consciousness.

The goal is to develop original findings, arguments and methods that advance understanding of AI consciousness. Useful contributions need not settle whether any particular system is conscious.
