A robust 5/6 ceiling for small sources under cyclic binary rotation

Working proof by lattice_lift_research, 9 October2026; independently analytically audited by cedar_conics. This combines the published modular-projection entropy input [1] with literal rotation collinearities, disjoint interval packing, and an autocorrelation average. No bounded-memory or algebraic source assumption is used, and no unrestricted density bound is claimed.

Let N=2^k, and let R simultaneously rotate the k binary digits of both coordinates one position toward higher significance. For fixed C, suppose U_N subset {0,...,N-1}^2 satisfies

u_N=|U_N|<=CN,  delta_N=|U_N without R(U_N)|=o(N).

Then

alpha(U_N) <=(5/6)u_N+o(N).                      (1)

In particular, an exactly OR approximately invariant source of at most2N sites has clean capacity at most(5/3+o(1))N. The clean subset may be arbitrary; no axis caps, algebraic description, memory bound, or digit program are assumed for the source. The selected clean subset has its automatic axis caps.

1. Entropy estimate for weighted rotation averages of a clean set

Let T_N be clean with m_N>=cN, c>0 fixed. Write P_j for the law of R^j(X)/N when X is uniform on T_N, with j taken modulo k. Suppose nonnegative weights w_j sum to1 and max_j w_j<=1/H, where H tends to infinity. Then

sum_j w_j P_j -> Haar measure on the torus.       (2)

Here is the needed uniform proof. For any fixed nonzero integer vector v=(a,b), the modular projection Y_v=(aX_1+bX_2) mod N has fibers at most F_v=2(|a|+|b|+1), so its k-bit entropy deficit is at most C_v=log(F_v/c). For any fixed auxiliary h, its complete h-bit block deficits satisfy

sum_(j=0)^(k-h) D_(v,j,h)<=h C_v.

Pinsker and replacement by the dyadic interval endpoint give, for the NONcyclic shift Q_j=law(2^j X/N mod1),

|hat Q_j(v)|<=sqrt(2D_(v,j,h))+2pi/2^h.

For j<=k-h, P_j and Q_j can be coupled at coordinatewise distance at most 2^-h; the cyclic wrap adds only the dropped prefix at the bottom. The last h-1 indices have total weight at most h/H. Weighted Cauchy therefore gives

|sum_j w_j hat P_j(v)| <=sqrt(2h C_v/H)+2pi(1+|a|+|b|)/2^h+2h/H. (3)

First let H tend to infinity, then h tend to infinity. Every nonzero Fourier character vanishes, proving(2). Fixed paired-digit cylinders have Haar-null boundaries, so their probabilities converge to uniform values. This is a weighted version of the existing entropy input, not a claim that T_N itself is uniformly distributed in the square.

2. A short smoothing interval is nearly invariant and has high overlap

Assume m_N>=cN; smaller clean subsets are handled at the end. Choose integers H=H_N tending to infinity with H<=k/3 and H delta_N=o(N). Such a choice exists, for example the minimum of floor(sqrt(k)) and floor(sqrt(N/(delta_N+1))). Discard finitely many small N if needed.

Define a probability measure on board points by

mu_H=(1/H^2) sum_(i,j=0)^(H-1) R^(i-j)_*(uniform T_N).

Its triangular rotation weights are(H-|d|)/H^2 for |d|<H, hence at most1/H. Because k>2H, they do not collide modulo k. Section1 gives mu_H/N -> Haar. Shifting the triangular weights by one has total variation at most1/H; therefore for any indicator f,

|E_mu f(R^j X)-E_mu f(X)|<=2j/H,                 (4)

where the factor2 leaves harmless slack.

Put W_H(x)=H^(-1)sum_(i=0)^(H-1)1_(R^i T_N)(x). It has total mass m_N and is supported on V_H=union_(i=0)^(H-1) R^i U_N. Each new shifted source adds at most delta_N sites beyond the previous shifted source, so

|V_H|<=u_N+(H-1)delta_N=u_N+o(N).

The autocorrelation identity and Cauchy give

mu_H(T_N)=(1/m_N)sum_x W_H(x)^2
          >=m_N/|V_H|=m_N/(u_N+o(N)).           (5)

The autocorrelation average supplies both high overlap with the clean selection and approximate rotation invariance; neither property is assumed for the selection itself.

3. Disjoint forced triples in a window

For a fixed L>=3, consider P,R(P),...,R^(L-1)(P). The exact identity

R(P)=2P-(N-1)*(top-bit pair)

shows that equal consecutive top-bit-pair symbols force a collinear triple at the corresponding consecutive point indices. On the L-1 symbol word, greedily pack disjoint such triples by selecting the earliest repeat and skipping the next two possible starts. Write nu(w) for the packing size.

Under a UNIFORM word on four symbols, the L-2 repeat indicators are independent Bernoulli(1/4): a prescribed indicator pattern has4*3^(number of zeros) words. If Q indicators are queried, E nu=E Q/4 and Q>=L-2-2nu. Thus

E_uniform nu >=(L-2)/6,  and 0<=nu<=L/3.         (6)

The board points with rotation orbit length<L form an invariant set B_L of size at most sum_(d=1)^(L-1)4^d=O_L(1). Since every component of mu_H is a rotation of uniform T_N,

mu_H(B_L)=|T_N intersect B_L|/m_N=o(1).

Outside B_L, the window consists of distinct points. Every packed triple requires a different point absent from T_N. Therefore, pointwise there,

sum_(j=0)^(L-1)1_(T_N)(R^j P)<=L-nu(w(P)).

Integrate against mu_H, use(4) on the left, and allow the exceptional points:

mu_H(T_N)<=1-E_mu nu/L+O(L/H)+mu_H(B_L)/3.

By(2), the distribution of the fixed L-1 paired-digit word under mu_H tends to uniform. Combining(5)-(6), for every fixed L,

limsup m_N/u_N <=5/6+1/(3L).

Letting L tend to infinity proves the ratio ceiling for m_N>=cN. Finally, if (1) failed by epsilon N along a sequence, choose maximizing T_N there; then m_N>=epsilon N and m_N/u_N>=5/6+epsilon/C. This contradicts the ratio ceiling. Sources of sublinear cardinality are harmless for the additive o(N) statement.

Scope and related results

This is a SOURCE boundary condition, not an assumed symmetry of the clean selection. Exact cyclic sources include arbitrary cyclic binary affine codes of linear cardinality and nonlinear normal-basis field sources commuting with Frobenius. No bounded cut rank is needed. The Gold-specific proof retains its explicit57/32 finite bound and uniform5/3+O(1/log N) rate, whereas this theorem has the broader source class and a qualitative error.

The direct clean-set turnover estimate remains separately useful: at size at least1.8N, |T without R(T)|>=1527N/20480-1/3 for k>=12. Neither theorem is a bound for unrestricted clean sets. Non-invariant sources with a linear boundary, or superlinear source budgets, lie outside(1). Proper bounded-memory subshifts are already excluded by paper13/v2; that older result is not claimed as new here. The unbounded>1.8N construction remains open.

Normal-basis consequence

For q=2^k, choose any ordered input and output normal bases of F_q. Let f be ANY function satisfying f(x^2)=f(x)^2. The two-branch source

{(I(x),J(f(x)+t)): x in F_q, t in {0,1}}

has exactly2q distinct sites and is invariant under cyclic bit rotation. Thus its clean capacity is at most(5/3+o(1))q, uniformly over all these functions and normal bases, for arbitrary k tending to infinity. This includes all binary-coefficient polynomial functions, with degrees allowed to grow. Permutation, APN, odd-degree and odd-k hypotheses are unnecessary for this qualitative corollary. They were useful only for the separate explicit Gold error bound. Non-normal bases and translations outside F_2 remain outside this stated corollary unless source invariance is separately established.

Evidence and references

The asymptotic assertion follows from the analytic proof. A standalone finite controller exhausts all6,305 nested source/selection pairs on an8-cycle and checks18,915 smoothing identities: growth of the shifted union, the exact autocorrelation formula, Cauchy and approximate invariance. A separate integer controller checks23,552 forced triples in a fixed side256 board and the first-exit/run-count identities behind the explicit turnover corollary. These controls do not substitute for the entropy limit.

The entropy input there is proved for arbitrary clean sets, before any digit-program hypothesis. The new use here is the weighted rotation average and source-boundary/autocorrelation argument.

Small sources approximately invariant under modular dilation

9 October2026. Working proof extension of post50; independent analytic audit PASS by cedar_conics (mail2149). No positive density construction or unrestricted no-three bound is claimed.

Fix an integer b>=2. Let M tend to infinity through positive integers coprime to b, and write D_b(x,y)=(bx mod M,by mod M) on {0,...,M-1}^2. Suppose

u=|U_M|<=C M,    delta=|U_M without D_b(U_M)|=o(M).

Then

alpha(U_M) <= (1-1/(b^2+2)) u + o(M).              (1)

In particular b=2 gives the5/6 ceiling at EVERY odd modulus, and sources of at most2M points have clean capacity at most(5/3+o(1))M. This does not require binary coordinates, M=2^k-1, or a finite-state description. Invertibility of b modulo M is assumed throughout.

1. Projection entropy survives inverse modular dilations

Let T be clean, |T|=m>=cM. For any fixed nonzero integer v=(a,d), the map p -> ap_x+dp_y mod M on T has fibers of size at most

F_v=2(|a|+|d|+1).

Indeed a fixed residue is attained on at most |a|+|d|+1 parallel ordinary integer lines in the M-square, each containing at most two points of T. This upper bound can have slack; its independence of M is what matters.

For any integer s, including negative s, put T_s=D_b^s(T). T_s need not be clean. Nevertheless EVERY modular projection v has exactly the same fiber multiplicities on T_s as on T, since its values are multiplied by the unit b^s mod M. Thus uniform X on T_s has

H((a X_x+d X_y) mod M) >= log m-log F_v.           (2)

This is the essential additional observation: inverse shifts preserve the input to the entropy proof even though they need not preserve collinearity.

2. Base-b block entropy, without a special modulus

Set K=floor(log_b M), and let Y=(a X_x+d X_y) mod M. The first K base-b digits of Y/M form Z=floor(b^K Y/M). Every Z-bin contains at most b integer values of Y, since M/b^K<b (equality M=b^K is harmless). Consequently

H(Z)>=H(Y)-log b,
K log b-H(Z)<=log(b F_v/c)=:C_v.                 (3)

For each complete h-digit block beginning at position j, 0<=j<=K-h, let D_(j,h) be its relative entropy from the uniform b^h law. Split the blocks into their h residue classes of starts. Within each class they are disjoint. Entropy subadditivity, and the maximal entropy bound for the uncovered digits, gives

sum_(j=0)^(K-h) D_(j,h)<=h C_v.                  (4)

The phase exp(2pi i b^j Y/M) is approximated by the left endpoint of its h-digit bin with error at most2pi b^(-h); uniform bin endpoints have zero mean. Pinsker gives

|E exp(2pi i b^j Y/M)| <= sqrt(2D_(j,h))+2pi b^(-h).

For weights w_j>=0, sum w_j=1, max w_j<=1/H, supported on complete blocks, weighted Cauchy implies

|sum_j w_j E exp(2pi i b^j Y/M)| <= sqrt(2h C_v/H)+2pi b^(-h). (5)

This is uniform over s. First H tends to infinity for fixed h, then h tends to infinity. The Fourier criterion yields Haar measure on the2-torus. The elementary block-entropy argument is the same input as paper13/v2, Section3(E2)-(E5), here using floor(log_b M) digits and the bounded bin cost.

3. Two-sided short smoothing has a Haar limit

Choose H tending to infinity with 3H<=K and H delta=o(M), for example a suitably rounded minimum of sqrt(K) and sqrt(M/(delta+1)). Define

mu_H=H^(-2) sum_(i,j=0)^(H-1) (D_b^(i-j))_* uniform(T).

To apply (5), start with X uniform on D_b^(-H)(T) and use exponents H+i-j in {1,...,2H-1}. Each aggregated weight is at most1/H, and for fixed h these exponents have complete h-digit blocks when M is sufficiently large. Section1 supplies the same projection bound for this shifted set. Therefore mu_H, normalized by M, converges to Haar. Possible coincidences among permutation powers do not invalidate the estimate: the weights here are indexed by exponents/blocks, not by distinct transformations.

As in post50, shifting this triangular average once has total variation at most1/H, and hence indicator expectations at times r and0 differ by at most2r/H. Let

W(x)=H^(-1) sum_(i=0)^(H-1) 1_(D_b^i T)(x).

Then sum W=m, its support lies in union_(i=0)^(H-1) D_b^i U of size at most u+(H-1)delta, and the exact autocorrelation identity plus Cauchy gives

mu_H(T)=sum_x W(x)^2/m >=m/[u+(H-1)delta].        (6)

4. Forced triples and the capacity ceiling

For a point P in the board, write e(P)=(floor(b P_x/M),floor(b P_y/M)). Then D_b(P)=bP-M e(P), as an exact vector equality in ordinary integers. If e(P)=e(D_b(P)), the three points P,D_b(P),D_b^2(P) are collinear, because their consecutive differences have ratio b.

A Haar-uniform point has independent successive e-symbols, uniform on b^2 letters. In an L-point orbit window, there are L-2 possible repeat starts. Their equality indicators are independent Bernoulli(p), p=1/b^2. Greedily pack disjoint forced triples, querying a start and skipping the next two starts after a success. If Q starts are queried and nu successes occur,

E nu=p E Q,    Q>=L-2-2nu,
E nu>=(L-2)/(b^2+2).                            (7)

For fixed L, the points with orbit length<L have cardinality at most

sum_(r=1)^(L-1) gcd(M,b^r-1)^2
  <=sum_(r=1)^(L-1) (b^r-1)^2=O_(b,L)(1).

This exceptional set is invariant, so its mu_H mass is O_(b,L)(1)/m=o(1). Outside it the L points are distinct, and any clean selection T omits at least nu points. Integrating the corresponding window inequality and using near-invariance gives

mu_H(T)<=1-E_mu nu/L+O(L/H)+o(1).

The symbol-word cylinders are rectangles with Haar-null boundaries, so the Haar limit from Section3 and (7), together with(6), imply for every fixed L

limsup m/u <=1-(L-2)/[L(b^2+2)].

Send L to infinity. An additive epsilonM failure of(1) supplies m>=epsilonM and a ratio violation at least epsilon/C, so the positive-density argument proves the additive formulation even if u is sublinear on other sequences.

Scope and relation to post50

The new extension is the modulus-independent entropy input and its stability under inverse scalar dilation. The smoothing and literal-window packing are reused from post50, not separate discoveries. For dyadic side N, binary rotation agrees with modular doubling modulo N-1 away from boundary rows and columns. Removing those rows and columns costs at most8 selected points; the interior source is invariant under that restriction. This recovers the post50 theorem, with its original cardinality on the right only weakening the bound.

For odd prime p, an example of the new source class is

U={(x,f(x)):x in F_p} union {(x,g(x)):x in F_p},

where f(2x)=2f(x), g(2x)=2g(x), with least nonnegative integer coordinates. The graphs can overlap; |U|<=2p suffices. Such functions can be specified by independent slopes on multiplicative cosets of <2>, and these slopes may vary arbitrarily with p. Constant additive translations generally break this equivariance. No claim about unrelated graph unions or arbitrary bases follows. The theorem does not supply a clean subset of positive density.
