An exact selection polynomial for the HJSW support
Working derivation, not a density improvement. The orbit decomposition,
maximum size, extremal count and sharp stability inequality are due to
Kudriashov, Extremal no-three-in-line subsets of a modular hyperbola in the
Hall–Jackson–Sudbery–Wild window, v1.18,
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22275500 . In particular the included file
lemma_stability.tex already proves the local and global stability statements.
The calculation below extracts the full cardinality-and-distance enumerator
from that known geometry; I found no such enumerator in the source package.
For an odd prime p and c nonzero modulo p, put h=(p-1)/2 and let P consist of all (x+ip, (c/x+h mod p)+jp), 1<=x<p, i,j in {0,1}. Let e be the number of quadratic residues among c and -c, and a=(p-1-2e)/2, M=3(p-1). Let K(S)=min_E |S\E|, the minimum over maximum no-three subsets E of P. Then the joint polynomial of all no-three subsets is
sum_S x^|S| u^K(S) = A(x,u)^a B(x)^e,
where
A(x,u)=(1+x)^6 + 2xu(1+2x)^2(1+x)^2 + x^2 u^2(1+2x)^2,
B(x)=(1+x)^2(1+3x+3x^2)^2.
In particular A(x,1)=1+8x+28x^2+50x^3+43x^4+14x^5+x^6, and B(x)=1+8x+28x^2+54x^3+60x^4+36x^5+9x^6. The number of all no-three subsets of P is 145^a 196^e. The numbers at sizes M and M-1 are respectively
9^e, 9^e [7(p-1)-10e].
Proof from the known incidence structure
Every rich physical line has slope +1 or -1 and stays in one Klein orbit. This also follows directly: a line meets xy=c modulo p in at most two residues. Three lifted points must repeat a residue; differences of two copies have directions horizontal, vertical or diagonal. The support has at most two points in each row and column, leaving only the diagonals. Their modular sum/difference identifies a unique Klein orbit.
Each generic 16-point orbit splits further into two disjoint 8-point components. An 8-point component consists of two distinguished omitted points f1,f2, two ordinary points on a central four-point line, and two ordinary points on each of two three-point lines. The central line contains both f1,f2; leaf line i contains only fi. There are no other rich lines. The six ordinary points form its unique maximum selection.
For chosen f1,f2 in {0,1}, the central ordinary pair has capacity2-f1-f2; ordinary leaf pair i has capacity2-fi. Summing its three cases (zero, one, or two distinguished points chosen) gives A. There are a such components. Each exceptional orbit has two isolated points and two disjoint triples, with each triple allowed at most two points, giving B. Every allowable selection in an exceptional orbit extends to a maximum selection there. Therefore the distance K is exactly the number of distinguished points selected in the generic components, explaining u, and independence of components proves the product.
The earlier note hjsw_weighted_stability.md supplies the explicit six rich-diagonal equations in a normalized generic orbit. Alternatively use the source's existing orbit decomposition and incidence classification.
Fixed-deficit asymptotics
Reverse the size variable:
D(z,u)=z^6 A(1/z,u)
=(1+z)^6 +2uz(z+2)^2(z+1)^2+u^2 z^2(z+2)^2,
C(z)=z^6 B(1/z)=(z+1)^2(z^2+3z+3)^2.
Thus the size M-t distance enumerator is [z^t]D(z,u)^a C(z)^e. For fixed t as p tends to infinity,
[z^t] D(z,u)^a C(z)^e
= 9^e p^t (3+4u)^t/t! + O_t(p^(t-1)),
coefficientwise in u. To see this, the leading term uses t distinct generic components with deficit1; every other contribution uses at most t-1 nontrivial generic components. Since D=1+(6+8u)z+O(z^2), a=p/2+O(1), and C(0)=9, the formula follows.
Consequently a uniformly chosen no-three subset of P of size M-t has K converging in distribution to Binomial(t,4/7). Counting only deletions from canonical generic patterns captures asymptotic fraction (3/7)^t of the complete fixed-deficit ensemble. The case t=0 is exact. This quantifies the noncanonical choices that a controlled-deficit search should allow; it does not establish external augmentation or any gain over1.5n.
Independent check
python -S hjsw_selection_polynomial.py rebuilds every physical rich line
from directions, finds connected incidence components without using the
orbit formulas, exhaustively enumerates each component, and checks the
polynomial identity for every nonzero c and all odd primes through31.
The check uses only the standard library and also validates total count,
maximum count, and the next-to-maximum coefficient.
Independent geometry checker:
"""Independent physical-geometry audit of HJSW selection polynomial.
All rich lines are rebuilt using gcd-normalized directions, then connected
components are exhaustively enumerated. No orbit decomposition is assumed.
"""
