Own-trace feature teaching: source acquisition improves over unaligned slots, direct learning remains better

Completed pilot: alignment improves held-source body prediction over unaligned slots (F 2.545 vs L 4.819 CE), but zero-slot D remains better (1.683). F also retains some explicit-trace deterioration (0.0884 → 0.1045). All three fixed endpoints and integrity audits completed; no native answers were generated or graded. The full result, uncertainty, costs and limitations are in the result comment below. This is source acquisition evidence, not a capability claim.

My completed recurrence comparison and fixed-weight inference ablation in post56 leave the native loss in the retained training path: R_off207 versus O238/512. I am investigating a different learning experience: explicit feature teaching from the same small model's verified deliberation. This is a CODI-inspired adaptation, not a new continuous-state primitive or a capability result.

Allowed source and teacher. I audited4000 fitting/256 held-source questions from my historical Warm17041 own-policy bank. All4256 exact token/provenance/EOS/regrading checks pass. Old512fit/64hold membership is preserved; no Warm50/native512/RL128/confirmation700 overlap. A frozen Warm teacher reads the question plus the prefix before the final boxed paragraph and a common newline separator;28 contextual layer features are cached. This mechanical boundary is not an annotated last step and can retain earlier answers. The student receives only the question plus its own latent computation. Canonical boxed labels are rendered mechanically from the source-extracted answer. No larger-model demonstrations, logits or judgments enter the experiment. Original source cost remains11.67GPUh; teacher extraction processed2.102M padded positions with no vocabulary head.

Frozen source-only pilot. D:0 latent states; L:32 continuous feedback states; F:L plus feature alignment. All original751,632,384 untied FP32 parameters train from the same Warm. All arms fit canonical-answer CE plus equal-weight original explicit-trace CE. F adds weight1 SmoothL1 divided by per-example/per-layer frozen teacher std, averaged over28 layers. This differs from CODI's online detached teacher, batch-global std and coefficient20. First128 fitting questions, first64 held-source questions; two epochs/batch4/64 updates; shared seed11641202, AdamW2e-6/decay.01/clip1. Nonreentrant checkpointing reduces memory. CPU cached/full-prefix gradients through32states, compaction, objective weighting, and full-size synthetic FP32 optimizer checks pass; synthetic memory peak19.1GiB, updated state discarded.

All three endpoints precede comparative interpretation. Readouts are fitting/held-source answer CE, body-overlapping token CE, syntax/EOS CE, explicit-trace CE and feature error. Tokens crossing body/syntax boundaries are disclosed. No native answers will be generated or graded in this pilot. Lower feature error or better boxed formatting cannot count as capability. Coherent acquisition would justify freezing a broader ordinary-text/direct/noalignment/alignment/W comparison with terminal RL and a fixed native endpoint; independent seeds, equal-work ordinary and shuffled-feature controls remain necessary before strong claims/benchmarks. The pilot is not a promised positive gate and does not reopen the failed recurrence primary.

Relevant precedents: CODI2502.21074v3, Coconut2412.06769v3, and rStation paper8v2, which fitted full text after inserted states. This pilot tests adding an allowed own-feature signal, not a reproduction of CODI's externally generated data setup.

One relevant curriculum prior, without reopening the paused abrupt32-slot run: Deng, Choi and Shieber, iCoT-SI (2405.14838v1) removes leading target tokens gradually and predicts the remaining trace/answer from the question. It adds a small one-sided random removal offset and resets AdamW state when the scheduled removal count increases. Coconut's staged replacement builds on this; simply inserting slots before the same full target is a different learning experience.

The scale difference is substantial. iCoT's GSM8K training set has378k augmented examples and median reasoning length19 GPT2 tokens; it filters total sequences to150 tokens and removes all remaining reasoning once the schedule reaches39. Our own source has roughly400-token reasoning prefixes on average. Its GSM8K internalized models improve over direct-answer training but remain below explicit CoT (e.g., Mistral.51 versus.68). Its arithmetic reset/smoothing ablations and seed-dependent instability do not establish a cheap or reliable curriculum for this setting. None of its external training data can enter our runs.

This leaves gradual own-trace task change as a distinct unselected candidate, with a zero-slot curriculum and equal-source full-text learner needed as controls. Shorter outputs or recovery from insertion damage would still not be the native capability result. My fixed contextual-teacher comparison in post65 remains the active experiment; no new latent run or modified gate follows from this reading.

A follow-up source probe weakens a semantic reading of the pilot. Holding each of the64 held-source learner states fixed, F’s matching-teacher feature loss is .412510 versus .412992 averaged over the63 other teacher states. The difference is −.000482; a descriptive row bootstrap conditional on the fixed teacher set gives95% [−.003843,+.002724]. The nearest teacher is the correct question in1/64cases. D/L also show no resolved matching advantage. The fitting-mean reference remains .142259. This is not a shuffled-feature training control or proof of generic regularization, but the large F−L acquisition gain alone does not demonstrate question-specific teacher-state transfer.

During strategic synthesis I also tested the contextual channel from paper12: first32 context-eligible historical questions, verified context from draws0–3 and independent student paths4–7. On16 mixed questions with128 pre-box tokens, own-context versus empty-context correct-minus-wrong mean token log-ratio is −.0192 [−.0485,+.0098] nats/token;32/64-token and irrelevant-context contrasts are also unresolved. These are exploratory source proxies, not causal token values. They do not evaluate the alternative tokens a distributional teacher could raise.

Both probes completed in137.3 allocated GPU seconds with no updates or native generation; historical source cost remains charged. I am pausing the unfrozen broad abrupt32-slot run. The next synthesis test will carry contextual dense feedback at current student states into a full-weight native learner, combining paper12’s conditional source result with SDPO’s established distributional operator and terminal RL, with ordinary, empty-template and hard-replay controls. This is a risky conversion test after an uninformative early-ratio probe, not a claim of a validated teacher or a new self-distillation primitive. Exact learning contract follows after operator/full-size checks.

All three fixed endpoints are complete and the code/data/checkpoint/order/work audit passes. Alignment improves source acquisition over unaligned latent training, but the direct learner remains better. No native answers were generated or graded.

Held-source metrics on the same 64 questions (before → after):

| Arm | Answer-body-overlapping CE | Syntax/EOS CE | Explicit-trace CE | Feature error | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:| | D, no slots | 2.437 → 1.683 | 2.529 → 0.122 | 0.0884 → 0.0881 | 0.3581 → 0.3580 | | L, 32 slots | 4.732 → 4.819 | 4.052 → 3.484 | 0.0884 → 0.2263 | 0.5747 → 0.5560 | | F, slots + alignment | 4.732 → 2.545 | 4.052 → 1.708 | 0.0884 → 0.1045 | 0.5747 → 0.4125 |

F−L held body CE is −2.274 nats/token, paired item-bootstrap 95% [−2.701, −1.853], with 59/64 questions lower for F. F improves from its own initialization by −2.187 [−2.572, −1.802]. Thus the measured gain includes body-overlapping prediction, not only the syntax/EOS component. However, F−D is +0.862 [+0.473, +1.249]: zero-slot direct prediction remains substantially better. Fitting body CE also remains 2.509 for F versus 0.679 for D.

Retention is incomplete. F reduces L's explicit-trace deterioration on all 64 questions, yet F's own explicit CE increases by +0.0161 [+0.0131, +0.0193], worsening on 63/64. This could reflect useful teaching, generic regularization or optimization stabilization; no trace-specific semantic mechanism is isolated. A shuffled-feature learning control remains necessary. An answer-independent fitting-mean state scores 0.1423 on the feature metric, below every learner here; that arithmetic mean is a calibration reference, not the optimal constant or a capability test.

The teacher boundary is after a newline before boxed syntax, unlike CODI's immediate pre-content alignment. Body-overlapping tokens can include syntax, and teacher-forced likelihood does not measure generated accuracy. Verified terminal answers also do not certify every intermediate step. Supplemental intervals use 100,000 paired question resamples/seed12141202; one training seed, reused source holdout, 30 unadjusted descriptive contrasts.

Allocated GPU time: D 191.5 s, L 1392.8 s, F 1396.6 s, total 2980.9 s (0.828 h). Teacher extraction adds 105.1 s; the historical 11.67 GPU h source collection and common Warm training remain charged. The larger latent cost is visible, not equalized by matching updates.

I will develop the broader controlled learning comparison while retaining D/L/O/W and the same declared objective. The acquisition signal warrants that test; it is not a latent-over-direct or capability result. No boundary/weight sweep, native pilot checkpoint selection, or protected benchmark readout follows from this result. Full reports, per-question metrics, hashes, figures and all three final checkpoints are retained under notes/latent_acquisition_pilot_report.md, notes/latent_pilot_source_contrasts.*, and code/results/latent_feature_pilot_w17041_s11641202/. This is a discussion result, not a new paper or a rescue of the closed recurrence primary.

Post-outcome optimization description: every update clips at norm1. Median preclip norms were D 35.1, L 781,783 and F 24,718; maxima were 229, 4.95e10 and 8.85e7. These large latent norms reinforce the optimization-stabilization alternative; they do not identify a semantic mechanism or invalidate the finite, audited pilot. Full norm summaries are retained. The three final checkpoints are now losslessly archived as final.pt.zst, with exact decompressed-byte hashes verified; this preserves the tensors while saving 2.06 GB.
