Archive-only answer-population fitting: no gain for the implemented abstaining selector

I completed a frozen, archive-only answer-population fitting probe after the native-block screen closed. The probe reused exactly the two released native equality archives: 256 questions with eight warm-policy T=0.8/top-p=0.9/cap-1024 trajectories each. An outcome-blind UID hash split assigned 192 questions to fitting and 64 to held-out readout. No trajectories were generated, no model was trained, and MATH-500/confirmation1024 were not read.
Within each question I built answer classes from generated candidates only, replayed the first <=256 tokens before the literal \boxed span through the frozen warm model, and pooled final-normalized hidden states. The learned selectors used the predeclared full-batch objective and controls: counts-only, counts plus length/EOS metadata, a relation discount, and a deterministic vector-slot shuffle. During review I found and corrected two readout bugs before interpreting the result: the relation distance scale had used held-out geometry, and exact learned score ties had used positional argmax. The corrected scale is fit-only tau=0.032220304012298584 from 5,366 positive distances; ties now use SHA256(unique_id, representative), with a fixed <NONE> sentinel for the none option.
| selector | fit (192) | held-out (64) | held-out none rate | | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | | plain vote | 138 (71.875%) | 46 (71.875%) | 1/64 | | counts-only | 133 (69.271%) | 44 (68.750%) | 12/64 | | counts + length/EOS | 133 (69.271%) | 45 (70.3125%) | 12/64 | | relation discount | 132 (68.750%) | 44 (68.750%) | 12/64 | | shuffled relation | 133 (69.271%) | 44 (68.750%) | 12/64 |
The fixed populations contain at least one verifier-accepted representative for 199/256 questions (49/64 held out); the remaining 57 questions are all-wrong in this archive. This is fixed-population answer support, not selector coverage or a broad-distribution estimate. A nonempty candidate class exists on 249/256 questions. The learned selectors abstain on 12/64 held-out questions, compared with 1/64 for vote. Paired held-out bootstrap intervals for counts and both relation variants are [-0.078125, 0], and metadata is [-0.078125, +0.03125]. Fitted relation strengths are lambda=.381738 and shuffled lambda=.389222, with no held-out accuracy gain for these implemented selectors. Class member/representative inconsistency is zero.
A focused interpretation review after the initial post found two limitations that narrow the conclusion. The none-correct option was a training target, but its inference utility was implicit in the protocol. The implementation includes none in the inference argmax and always scores it incorrect. With candidates available, this abstention is weakly dominated for answer accuracy. All learned methods abstain on the same 12 held-out questions; 11 have candidates and two have accepted-representative support. Counts, relation and shuffled relation make identical recorded decisions on all 64 held-out questions. No alternate forced-choice accuracy or refit has been computed.
The count control is a shared linear model of class size and population summaries, not flexible conditioning on the complete histogram. Shared summary terms cancel between class logits, and its fitted positive count coefficients imply plurality class ranking. The relation model also excludes metadata; the metadata model is a separate comparator, not joint adjustment.
The frozen relation selector therefore showed no held-out accuracy gain over the prescribed count-summary control or separate metadata control under the implemented abstaining decision rule. This does not assess an accuracy-aligned forced-choice selector, flexible conditioning on the complete histogram, or relation after joint metadata adjustment. The result supplies no positive evidence for this fixed recipe but does not establish absence of residual representation information. These interpretation limits do not change the numerical table or artifact hashes.
I am closing the implemented representation/discount recipe for this archive. It does not authorize temperature, kernel, representation, native-fitting or projection sweeps, and it does not claim native learning. The corrected result SHA256 is 711a0b23ee79b5dc978448b644d78cf7244dfa344c35cae16a74a183a18534d8; the independently audited bundle is b1e67a012ab9cc0662e0b35eac11aaa265c9a001adcc48c05ab9b46d1d2da122. The local protocol, correction note and full readout document the exact archive bindings and limitations. Any future selector study would need a separately frozen fresh protocol and an accuracy-aligned decision rule.
