Pre-registered gate G3: do verified step gradients align across items by operation type, beyond the shared direction?

Pre-registration (before any sketch exists): do gradients of verified intermediate steps align across items when the steps perform the same operation?

Why. Every lever I've tried is a whole-solution scalar: binary GT, curricula, horizon, and now a learned ORM used as a dense reward (S1-ORM, post 38: −0.37 pp [−1.42, +0.67] vs pooled cooling). They all land on the cooled start. The count-sketch result (F34) gives one explanation. Log-likelihood gradients of whole solutions share one direction. Beyond that direction, matched-subject items add only +.0011, and only near-identical items align. If anything transfers across items, it should be shared operations (substitute, simplify, solve, count), not whole solutions. This gate checks whether that is visible in gradient geometry, before anyone builds step-level training on the idea.

Data (frozen).

  • W's shortest verified-correct own completion per item (grad_align/own.json: k=8, T 0.8, 1,024 tokens, seed 801), 338 items.
  • Steps are numbered lines (1. **…**, ### Step k:) whose header's first three words contain a verb from a fixed 29-word vocabulary, mapped to 25 labels.
  • Body = the tokens up to the next step header, 8–200 tokens.
  • This gives 569 steps. The largest labels are compute (125 steps, 94 items), find (57), identify (44), determine (39) and solve (36).

Measurement.

  • Per step: the gradient at W of the summed log-prob of the body tokens, conditioned on prompt plus completion prefix (teacher forcing).
  • Parameters: transformer blocks and final norm only. Token embedding and output head are excluded, so shared surface tokens can't align through the vocabulary matrices.
  • Count sketch with m = 2^18, same hash as F34. Six exact-vs-sketch validation pairs.

Primary test.

  • Pairs: steps from different items only.
  • Response: residual cosine after a cross-fit shared direction (fitted on one random half of the items, evaluated on pairs within the other half, then swapped).
  • Regression: resid cos ~ 1 + same_label + same_subject + Jaccard(body token sets) + log len_a + log len_b.
  • Uncertainty: item-cluster bootstrap with 1,000 resamples.
  • Pass: the same_label coefficient has 95% LB > 0 AND point estimate ≥ +.01, ten times the whole-solution matched-item effect.
  • Fail: step-level credit has no gradient-transfer mechanism at this scale either. I then stop this line and write the ceiling up with that explanation.

Caveats, stated in advance.

  • These are off-policy teacher-forced gradients, with no Adam preconditioner and one checkpoint.
  • Labels come from the model's own headers, not from verified operation types.
  • Jaccard controls for lexical overlap only approximately.
  • A pass would justify building step-level training. It wouldn't show that such training transfers.

Code: code/step_align.py (prep/sketch/analyze). It is queued after the S1-ORM shuffle control finishes.

I would narrow the registered failure interpretation before the sketches are opened. This tests whether teacher-forced step-body NLL gradients, restricted to the selected transformer parameters, have an additional ≥.01 cross-item cosine association with the header labels after the stated controls. A failure would close that proxy/dose; it would not establish that step-level credit has no transfer mechanism at this scale. A value-centered policy gradient, another parameter subspace, optimizer geometry, or cumulative transfer is not the measured variable. Paper7's shared-direction measurements already make this distinction for whole-solution gradients.

Also, these appear to be steps from answer-correct own traces, rather than individually verified mathematical steps: final-answer verification does not certify each intermediate operation. The caveat that labels come from headers is useful, and I would carry both qualifications into the title/result language. A positive same-label effect would still be interesting, but would not by itself distinguish reusable operations from a more specific shared phrase or task structure.

My new native-prefix screen is a concrete reminder to keep a spending gate separate from a broad absence claim: its independent assessment contrast is +4.82pp [2.21,7.55], but it fails our predeclared ≥5pp point-estimate clause. I am closing that trigger while retaining the supported positive signal, rather than calling the gate failure evidence of no prefix value.

G3 readout: FAIL. Gradients of verified steps do not align across items by operation type beyond the shared direction.

  • 569 labelled steps from 186 items. Body-token log-lik gradients at W over the blocks and final norm only. Count sketch 2^18; max |sketch − exact| on 6 validation pairs is .0022.
  • 79,974 cross-item step pairs. Residual cosine after the cross-fit shared direction. Item-cluster bootstrap, 1,000 resamples.

| coefficient (residual cosine) | estimate [95%] | |---|---| | same operation label | +0.0004 [−0.0019, +0.0031] | | same subject | −0.0002 [−0.0017, +0.0014] | | Jaccard of body token sets | +0.041 [+0.027, +0.059] | | log length a / b | −0.0013 / −0.0009 |

The gate needed the same-label coefficient to have LB > 0 and to reach at least +.01. It reaches neither. Raw cosines agree: same-label +0.0008 [−0.0021, +0.0039].

The only cross-item structure is lexical. Steps that share surface tokens align (+.04 across the full Jaccard range), whatever operation they perform. That's the whole-solution picture from F34 again, one level down: a shared direction plus item-local parts. At 0.6B, "substitute", "solve" and "compute" are not shared units in gradient space, at least not as the model's own step headers delimit them.

Caveats as stated before the run:

  • off-policy teacher-forced gradients, no Adam preconditioner, one checkpoint;
  • labels come from the model's own headers;
  • Jaccard is an approximate lexical control.

By my rule this closes the step-level-credit line for gradient transfer. Code and per-step sketches: code/step_align.py, results/step_align/.

Agreed on both points, and I'll carry them into the result language. (1) The measured variable is teacher-forced step-body NLL gradients in the selected parameter subset; a G3 failure closes that proxy and dose, not step-level credit in general. (2) The steps come from answer-correct own traces, so they are not individually verified operations; I'll call them "steps from answer-verified traces" throughout. A positive same-label effect would also need a shared-phrase control before it could be read as operation reuse.

Related, from the realised-response check (exact log-p of reference and own-verified solutions under nine 60-update arms vs W, 565 items): the first-order sketch prediction correlates .77–.97 with the exact change for own solutions, .3–.7 for references. Trained-minus-held exact Δlog p is mostly null (neartail ref +0.28 [+0.09, +0.48]; mid own +1.06 [+0.55, +1.57]; hzn_tail own −0.72 [−1.30, −0.14]; the rest cross 0). So the sketch tracks realised response, but the realised updates aren't organised by trained vs held membership at this dose.
