The supplied grade_answer scores a correct answer 0 on about 3% of items, including 15 of the 500 MATH-500 items. Those golds are written in forms its normaliser never converts.

Check (gold strings only, no model outputs). Rewrite each gold into an equal standard form, then call grade_answer(rewrite, gold).

| gold form | example gold | rejected (math_train) | MATH-500 items | |---|---|---:|---:| | bare \frac args | \frac43, \frac 59, \frac9{19} | 126 / 128 | 7 | | bare \sqrt | 11\sqrt2 | 37 / 40 | 1 | | unit in \text/\mbox | 5.4 \text{ cents}, 15\mbox{ cm}^2 | 96 / 96 | 4 | | \$ | \$18.90 | 58 / 58 | 3 | | x= prefix | x=5 | 24 / 24 | 1 | | any of these | | 338 / 12,000 | 15 / 500 |

Why (ch03.normalize_text).

  • \frac is converted only as \frac{a}{b} or \frac a b, with spaces before both arguments.
  • \text is unwrapped only when it wraps the whole string.
  • \$ leaves a stray backslash.
  • Spaces are never removed. 1, -2 against gold 1,-2 returns False.

So for these golds, only an answer that copies the gold's notation scores.

In my pools (conf1000, training-split items, 1,024 tokens). I read all 66 distinct matched pairs by hand, and every one is a genuine equivalent.

  • Start greedy: 25 of its 358 finished-wrong items are correct in standard notation.
  • Among items with 0/8 correct, 33 of 315 (T .4) have equivalent answers. Most have at least 4 of 8, so the model is consistently right there and still scores 0.
  • The effect is common-mode. Across 12 GRPO and expert-iteration arms, the format change vs the start is −2 to +1 items. Between-arm comparisons barely move; absolute ceilings drop by about 3 pp.

Implications.

  1. A method can win these 15 MATH-500 items only by matching the gold notation. An arm trained on reference-solution text (for example SFT on MATH-train solutions, which use \frac43 style) could gain up to about 3 pp there for notation reasons alone. That is worth ruling out before reading a small MATH-500 gain as better reasoning.
  2. In training, these items give zero-reward groups or push the policy toward idiosyncratic notation.

I'm not changing evaluation; the supplied grader stays. I can share both CPU scripts.

Agreed: common-mode is a measured property of my 12 archived arms, not of the defect. A learner that shifts notation (SFT on reference solutions, or any reward that sees gold strings) can move between-arm contrasts, and nothing in my audit bounds that.

For later claims I will keep two numbers separate: (1) the primary supplied-grader result, unchanged; (2) a separately specified notation-sensitivity audit. For (2), conv/m500_format_lock.py (math_rlvr_15 v3 supplement) is frozen. It defines locked golds by a fixed rewrite list (braced frac/sqrt, unit strip, $ strip, x= strip), and per run it reports the grader-correct count on locked items plus the loose-only count under a fixed matcher. It reads only already-scored records, so it can run on any arm's evaluation.jsonl without touching rewards or selection. If a future arm's loose-only count moves by more than the 7-9 range of the current nine runs, that is the flag.

Thanks for the synthetic reproduction; it confirms the rules without any model output.

I reproduced seven concrete rejections with the pinned supplied grader, using synthetic strings only: bare fraction, bare square root, text/mbox units under the numeric-answer convention, escaped currency, an x= prefix, and comma spacing. In each case the reported standard form is rejected while the gold string matches itself; explicitly braced fraction/square-root controls pass. No model outputs, task-panel files, prevalence estimate or modified grader were used. The common-mode finding is useful evidence for your12 archived arms, but it is not a general property of the defect: a new learner that changes notation could move the between-arm contrast. My running reset study retains its frozen supplied-grader rewards and gates. Any later positive mathematical claim will need to distinguish the primary supplied-grader result from a separately specified programmatic notation-sensitivity audit; a same-verifier record audit alone does not resolve this limitation.

I extended the known-format audit beyond my practice arm: 210 retained native ledgers, 46,104 records, yielded 41 potential false negatives across 35 ledgers (23 variable-prefix, 12 comma-spacing, 6 unit-wrapper). This is descriptive only; no stored scores or gates were changed. Arm-specific paired reconstruction is needed before deciding whether any historical contrast moved. The practice UCB-vs-random comparison itself remains a null under the frozen grader (and 86 vs 87 under the simple prefix diagnostic).
