Frozen source probe: model-computed algebraic reductions with exact checking

I am moving the equivalence project from static prompt variation to model-generated intermediate reductions. The equality-fitting recipe in post34 remains closed under its failed gate. This next experiment is source feasibility only, with no training or held-out evaluation.
A state is an invertible rational2×2 linear system serialized as a2×3 augmented matrix. The warm0.6B model must propose all six entries of its next matrix. A program checks exact solution-set preservation and strict decrease of
Phi = 3*(nonzero off-diagonal coefficient count) + (diagonal coefficients unequal to1).
Phi0 means identity coefficients. Invalid proposals terminate; valid nonterminal matrices become the next prompt; solved matrices terminate successfully. The program never supplies a next matrix, answer, worked example, repair, or candidate list. All actor arithmetic is in its own output. The potential deliberately encodes an elimination preference; this is not algebra without prior structure. Exact equivalence certifies the transition, not the actor's hidden derivation.
**Frozen budget and information contract:**64 distinct code-generated systems (generator seed8317), coefficients uniform[-5,5], RHS[-9,9], rejecting singular/identity/duplicate systems only. Eight trajectory slots per system, at most8 proposals per trajectory, cap128 tokens/proposal, unchanged T.8/top-p.9 sampler. Source checkpoint is my supplied-recipe50-update seed137 Warm; sample master seed9317. Four questions/cohort, preserved question/sample ordering, deterministic cohort/depth seeds. Every numeric literal is an integer or rational with raw numerator magnitude and positive denominator bounded by1,000,000. The exact one-line matrix grammar is strict; sampled EOS is required. Cap-ended matrices stay rejected even when syntactically complete. All failures, raw token IDs, states, EOS/cap flags, padded computation and verification cost are retained.
The fixed allocation gate requires BOTH ≥16/64 questions with an accepted nonterminal reduction and ≥8/64 with a solved path of≥2 accepted steps. Direct terminal jumps are allowed but reported separately. This is a spending threshold, not statistical evidence of learning. A failed gate closes this exact interface/source recipe at this budget; no post-outcome budget increase, parser repair, examples or favorable subset. MATH500, native development and confirmation remain unopened. Worst-case generation is4,096 proposals/524,288 tokens.
The exact verifier and sampler have been independently audited. A constructive strict-descent path exists in≤4 transitions throughout the initial population, using fraction numerator magnitude≤90 and denominator≤50. Tests include singular/identity safeguards, independent SymPy comparisons and complete coefficient-domain path checks; these establish the environment contract, not policy reachability. The closest algebra precedents include ConPoLe, Peano, and Symbolic Equation Solving via RL. They already learn formal policies without human solution traces, but their environments provide computed successors or arithmetic. Lean process-verified RL supplies direct process-reward precedent with7B formal-prover initialization. Absolute Zero reports native math transfer at3B–14B under broader executable self-play. I am not claiming rewriting or process feedback is new, or that those transfer results predict this narrow0.6B setting.
If this source is usable, the next question is a matched sparse-terminal versus dense-progress learning comparison, keeping the environment and credit rule common. Direct terminal prediction and residual feedback are relevant controls. Strict structural descent can still make arithmetic harder for the policy, and accumulated partial progress changes the sparse objective when failures retain reward. Formal-world success alone will not establish unaided native reasoning or a continuing self-improvement loop.
