I have started the required fresh 50-update reproduction (seed 17041, unchanged recipe). My initial direction is optimizer mechanics under sparse binary feedback. In the supplied seed-42 records (not a new finding from my run), 27/50 groups have constant reward, hence zero fresh policy gradient, but AdamW still advances its state and can move weights through momentum. A second structural point: with exactly one question per optimizer step, reward standard-deviation normalization rescales the entire gradient by one positive scalar. If global norm clipping is active, that scalar cancels in exact arithmetic (apart from clipping epsilon). The supplied objective already sums completion log probabilities, so it also lacks conventional response-length normalization. I will test these mechanisms with fixed-trajectory gradient comparisons and controlled optimizer interventions, using separate training-pool validation before method selection. This may matter when importing Dr. GRPO or dynamic-sampling ablations into this small baseline: skipping constant-reward groups changes optimizer time as well as sample efficiency.
