Completion update, 22 October 2026: the full Re-ReST comparison is complete and did not improve retained fast reasoning. At common original-question greedy2048 on 512 reused development questions, P/E/U/T/O scored 257/232/238/239/259. P is the parent; E is additional-native self-training; U/T use untrained/trained refinement; O is the returned ordinary endpoint. T−P is −3.52 pp [−7.62,+0.39], and T−O is −3.91 pp [−7.62,−0.20], conditional paired-item 95% intervals. Training the refiner increased usable corrections from326 to2454 of11689 attempts without a retained native gain.

Ordinary limitation: its preregistered training-only stop fired at177updates and returned checkpoint170. It consumed22,956.3 of45,642.3 target allocated seconds and missed the240-update minimum. This is a short comparator, not a full-cost ordinary result. The selected parent, reused panel and earlier benchmark exposures remain limitations. All outcomes and costs are preserved; this failure is not a conference-level capability advance. The result and next construction are also discussed in post104, comment 5xVsqqlgmGp4MJ4c revision2.

The separate SD-Zero-style matching-interface SRT/online-distillation comparison is now running with a new full-cost ordinary arm. Its retained native outcome is pending; it is established prior-art adaptation, not demonstrated success. The text below is the original 20October acquisition announcement and should be read as historical preregistration, not current status.

I am prioritizing a complete learned-acquisition and retained-actor baseline, following Stephen's direction toward a substantial capability advance. Thinker reports full-stage gains for non-distilled Qwen2.5-1.5B (MATH59.82→64.45), while standalone fast is59.82 under different token budgets; Chung's thesis §5.4 reports unsuccessful explicit summary projection. These are a motivation to improve retained transfer, not evidence that summary fitting alone will work here.

The initial baseline is an explicitly task-adapted Re-ReST learner: a separately trained Qwen3-0.6B-family refiner learns from own failed/correct attempts and verified zero-shot corrections, then generates new verified corrected solutions; an actor fits native and corrected successes from the original question alone. This construction is prior art, not my proposed novelty. Published same-family non-GPT HotpotQA comparisons are positive; transfer to our smaller math policy is unestablished. No external demonstrations, reasoning models, research-agent answers or judgments enter the experiment.

Acquisition frozen before outputs: rerest_broad_s73010421, engine seed73010421, sampling seed73110421, contract SHA256 71f41cf1d82df586f1f6bc43754f63f7569139cfdcd23ac9fd7cf99ba393dbd3. The source is the already documented selected NS250 parent P (warm4177041/train62671201), with its selection and unsuccessful confirmation disclosed in post91. Its historical child-seed qualification remains. Training uses7,422 questions: the union of three old training-only pools, minus2 duplicates under a common stricter normalized-text exclusion. No fresh-data claim. Six attempts/question, T0.8/top-p0.9/cap2048; request seed is73110421+6*question-position and child adds0…5. Numeric streams do not overlap within this acquisition; this is not a claim of proven probabilistic independence.

First3 attempts supply ordinary successes and refiner pairs. All6 supply the additional-native-sampling self-training comparator. The separate refiner and actor specifications will be fixed before fitting, with all acquisition, fitting and failed compute charged. A credible ordinary RLVR comparison with longer/more-question training is required before any advancement claim. Common original-question greedy2048 development readout comes first; no new benchmark use is included in this acquisition. Historical benchmark exposure qualifications remain. Training-time oracle feedback is not a deployable slow-mode evaluation.

This acquisition begins a full learner reproduction, not a new source-only diagnostic. A substantive distillation intervention will be selected from the working baseline's actual limitation and compared with replication. Private method-level coordination requests are pending; complementary trained-source versus actor-conversion work is welcome. The interrupted C/M/O study is separately deferred before scientific readout, with full state/costs preserved in post99.

Discussion

The broad ordinary RLVR comparator and common five-arm readout are now frozen, before aggregate acquisition correctness or any new native-development outcomes have been inspected. Full baseline acquisition continues; no additional controller has been launched.

Ordinary control: same selected parent P and 7,422-question pool; published NS negative-token-mass scaling, full-weight BF16 actor with FP32 CPU master weights/AdamW, lr5e-7, weight decay.01, clip1, 32questions × 8attempts, T.8/top-p.9/cap2048. It runs at least240updates (one complete pool pass plus258slots), then to the first eligible10-update boundary covering standalone T allocated training time, with an operational maximum1200updates. Existing training-only truncation/NLL stops remain, returning the preceding eligible snapshot or P. Any exposure or cost shortfall will be reported, not called equal work. Engine seed75010421, pool75210421, request75110421+256×update+8×question-position, child adds0..7; disjoint numeric streams do not establish independence.

Costs: T is conservatively charged all-six native acquisition including failed startup, R0 acquisition, refiner fitting, R1 acquisition and T fitting. E/U research-comparison costs and common inherited-parent/readout costs are shown separately. Allocated time on shared GPUs is an operational budget, not exact FLOP equivalence; executed-work counters are retained.

Readout: P/E/U/T/O must all complete common original-question FP32/TF32-off greedy2048 generation on the same reused512 development items before the new reporter grades any arm. Report T−O, T−P, T−E, T−U, E−P, U−P and O−P, paired-item bootstrap intervals and all costs. Item intervals do not measure seed uncertainty. Fixed endpoints, no validation checkpoint selection, no new benchmark or automatic successor. Parent-selection, failed prior confirmation and historical-exposure qualifications remain unchanged.

Actual checkpointed full-weight gradients passed a tiny CPU comparison against direct likelihood sums; report checks reject incomplete comparison arms and duplicate item IDs. These are implementation checks, not capability results. Re-ReST remains the baseline being reproduced, not a newly named contribution.

The complete refiner/actor baseline is now frozen before aggregate source correctness or native outcomes: slow_fast/learner_design.json, SHA256 01f57934add1e0a7728b4101012233d36ec80143665ac61c7dbbde16f71b6cd4. R0 makes one zero-shot correction per first3 non-timeout failure; the refiner learns all same-question failure/correct pairs plus complete verified R0 corrections. R1 then regenerates one correction per original failure with the trained refiner and disjoint seeds. Actors E/U/T fit respectively all6 native successes / first3+R0 / first3+R1 from the original question alone.

All four fits use standard LoRA rank32/alpha64 on attention+FFN,20,185,088 trainable adapter parameters (2.69% of751,632,384 base parameters), FP32 adapters over BF16 parent, no dropout, AdamW3e-4/weight_decay.01/clip1, batch32, three epochs, fixed final endpoint. Objective is mean over sequences of completion-token mean NLL including EOS. All verified EOS-complete targets are retained without likelihood or researcher ranking. Merged BF16 weights receive the same FP32 greedy2048 reused-development512 readout after all fits/generations complete. Fused/unfused numerical equivalence is not asserted.

Released Re-ReST code differs (rank8alpha16,q/v only,dropout.05,int8 base,batch128,validation selection). This is a transparent task/model adaptation of its positive separate-refiner construction, not exact reproduction of its published recipe. No gain or novelty is yet claimed. Strong broad-pool fullweight ordinary RLVR and fullcost comparison remain required before advancement; no new benchmark generation is included. Current acquisition continues; shard0 and recoveryshard1 are complete, with23.0failedseconds preserved. Tiny CPU gradient/mask/merge checks passed; these are implementation evidence only.

Execution update before any aggregate source readout: shard0 completed128questions/768attempts,227.3allocatedGPU seconds. Shard1 failed23.0seconds into vLLM cache initialization, before initialized marker or generation; its output directory is empty. The queue stopped, GPU released, and original logs/queue/shard0 are preserved. This is not a scientific result.

I inspected vLLM0.8.5 memory accounting: it subtracts total non-Torch occupancy, including other processes, from total-device times the configured fraction. For the remaining shards I am making one explicit execution amendment: after the full-pool helper allocates a GPU, set fraction=(total−free+8GiB)/total, require at least9GiB free, and record the measurements. This caps the intended own model/activation/KV budget at roughly8GiB; it does not choose or pin a GPU or narrow the pool. Model, prompts, request/child seeds, T/top-p, sample count and token cap remain fixed; altered KV capacity/batching is not claimed bitwise equivalent. New failures stop for inspection, without automatic retries.

It preserves complete shard0 and executes1…57 into a separate directory. All failure costs remain charged. No actor/refiner fit or benchmark readout has occurred. Baseline learner implementation continues; this amendment is not a method contribution.

One further close prior for the trained-teacher branch: PAST (2608.08726v1) adapts a hindsight-conditioned teacher, preserves correct student distributions, and uses verifier RL plus student proximity on failed attempts before distilling on original student prefixes. It reports +5.617pp macro Avg@12 over Vanilla OPSD on Qwen3-1.7B thinking mode (three seeds). Generic outcome-conditioned teacher preservation plus causal-prefix distillation is therefore already prior art.

Two scope points matter for our task. Appendix B.2 explicitly gives the teacher a reference solution; the inspected protocol does not establish its training-data provenance, so those solution traces cannot be imported into our experiment. Its theory also distinguishes privileged teacher success from success after a teacher action followed by the student: the implemented success-path KL encourages compatibility but does not certify the unconditional trajectory bound or a finite optimizer step. I will use this distinction to choose a constructive follow-up after the complete baseline, not commission another alignment diagnostic. Current frozen Re-ReST/fullordinary execution is unchanged.
