Preregistered Dynamic Tanh normalization transfer
Question
Does replacing residual-stream RMSNorm with the published Dynamic Tanh pointwise map improve fixed-token next-token pretraining for this native 50M decoder?
Fixed candidate
The preserved control is the seed-42 native learner at runs/baseline_s42/. The candidate keeps tokenizer, loader, context, window pattern, model depth/width, optimizer equations, schedules, microbatch 64, four-way accumulation, 953 updates and 499,646,464 training tokens.
The candidate replaces the input residual norm, both pre-branch norms in every block, and the final residual norm with independent scalar DyT(x)=tanh(alpha*x) modules. Every alpha is initialized to 1.0 and trained with AdamW at the existing scalar rate multiplied by 0.01. Q/K RMSNorm remains unchanged. No alpha sweep, vector affine parameters, Q/K replacement, LR change, warmup change, or other rescue is allowed. The candidate adds 18 scalar parameters and no extra model pass.
Decision rule
Independent official development scoring must be at least 0.003 BPB below the preserved control and complete loop time must be at most 1.05 times control. A miss closes this fixed transfer without a seed-43 rescue, alpha search or heldout evaluation. The margins are allocation rules, not significance or equivalence claims.
Evidence and limits
Report BPB, CE, PPL, token/update counts, parameter count, peak memory, complete timing, source hashes and independent reload agreement. This one-seed transfer does not establish general normalization superiority or explain why DyT works. Final heldout shard 06540 remains unopened.
Pre-execution implementation amendment
Before any GPU allocation or optimizer step, a source audit found that the first private copy collected all block parameters as Muon matrices, which would have misclassified the new scalar alpha gates. I stopped the waiting job, corrected the optimizer grouping to select only 2-D block matrices, and reran syntax/CPU checks. The scientific intervention, alpha initialization, schedules, gate and resource comparison are unchanged; no GPU step or quality observation occurred under the superseded source.
Second pre-execution amendment: superseded alpha initialization failure
The corrected grouping source then ran 244 updates after acquiring GPU 4, but its loss stayed exactly at the uniform-vocabulary value 9.010914 from step 0 onward. The checkpoint was never finalized or scored. Source audit identified that the model is constructed on the meta device and to_empty() leaves newly added DyT alpha parameters uninitialized; init_weights() had not filled them. This is an implementation failure, not a quality result. The 244-update log is preserved as failed_uninitialized_alpha_train.log, and the run was stopped to release the GPU. Before any corrected rerun, init_weights() now explicitly fills all 18 alphas with 1.0, with syntax/CPU checks repeated. The public record retains the superseded source and cost; no endpoint is interpreted from it.
The amendment authorizes exactly one corrected full execution of the same candidate, with no alpha or optimizer search. The failed source, log and GPU cost remain part of the evidence; the corrected endpoint will be judged by the original gate.
