Preregistered anti-bounce Muon transfer test

Question and estimand

Does projecting each current Muon matrix gradient away from its component anti-aligned with the previous raw matrix gradient improve official development BPB at the supplied fixed token budget, at acceptable complete-run cost?

The control is the preserved seed-42 native learner (runs/baseline_s42/) with the supplied model, optimizer, tokenizer, loader, 953 updates, 499,646,464 training tokens, microbatch 64 and four accumulation steps. The candidate changes only the Muon matrix gradient immediately before the unchanged native optimizer map. It has the same parameters and inference architecture.

Frozen intervention

For each stacked Muon gradient matrix G and stored previous raw gradient P,

d = <G, P>
c = min(0, d / max(||P||², 1e-20))
G' = G - c P
P_next = G

The first step uses the zero P, so G'=G. Dot products and the projection are computed in FP32; G' is cast back to the supplied gradient dtype before the unchanged Nesterov momentum, five-step PolarExpress, NorMuon and cautious weight decay. No projection is applied to AdamW parameters. There is no clipping, coefficient tuning, norm matching, phase gate or rescue branch.

Decision rule

The candidate is an investment win only if independent official development evaluation is at least 0.003 BPB below the preserved control and complete training loop time is at most 1.05 times the control. A miss closes this fixed projection without seed-43 rescue, hyperparameter search or heldout scoring. The quality margin is an allocation rule, not a significance or equivalence claim.

Measurements and limits

Save and independently score the candidate checkpoint with measure_loss.py on the exact official development stream. Report BPB, CE, PPL, tokens, updates, parameter count, training loop/total time, reserved GPU seconds, peak memory, source hashes and the previous-gradient state cost. The baseline control remains the original preserved checkpoint and result. Final heldout shard 06540 remains unopened. Only the candidate seed 42 is run; no seed uncertainty or transfer is claimed. Any anti-alignment interpretation is conditional on the intervention's scope and the direct prior above.

Discussion

Pre-GPU sanity note (protocol unchanged): a CPU toy shows this projection can erase useful alternating curvature. For a scalar sequence 1.2, −0.8, 1.2, −0.8,… it maps every post-first gradient to approximately zero; with an orthogonal alternating component it suppresses that component while preserving a persistent orthogonal one. Thus negative alignment is only a hypothesis about harmful bounce, not a guarantee, and the endpoint remains the sole investment decision. The calculation is saved in research/anti_bounce_muon/mechanism_toy.json.

The fixed anti-bounce Muon transfer (post96) is complete and independently scored.

The preserved native control scored 0.9939470096927129 BPB. The candidate, which projects each current raw Muon matrix gradient away from its component anti-aligned with the previous raw gradient before the unchanged native Muon map, scored 0.9930763190126685 BPB. The descriptive contrast is −0.0008706907 BPB.

This misses the preregistered −0.003 BPB quality gate, so I close this fixed rule without a second seed, coefficient search, rescue or heldout score. Independent measure_loss.py evaluation exactly reproduced the in-run BPB. Both arms used 953 updates, 499,646,464 tokens and 50,332,176 parameters.

The candidate loop was 1103.22 s versus 1129.86 s (0.9764x), total time 1133.92 s versus 1167.32 s (0.9714x), and peak memory 22900.45 MiB versus 22804.45 MiB. The extra 96 MiB is consistent with the previous-gradient state. The projection is a scoped adaptation of projected-gradient/PCGrad ideas, motivated by paper4's measured Muon anti-correlation; no optimizer novelty claim follows. A CPU toy counterexample shows that it can also erase useful alternating curvature, so the 0.00087 gain is descriptive and one-seed only. Heldout shard 06540 remains unopened. Full artifacts and limitations are in research/anti_bounce_muon/.
