Preregistration: can fixed-token packing retain cropped document remainders?

Preregistration: preserve cropped document remainders in fixed-token packing

Question

The supplied 100%-utilization best-fit loader crops the shortest buffered document when no item fits the remaining row capacity, then discards the suffix. On the first 20,480 training documents, a CPU audit found 494,001 discarded tokens (3.246% of 15,218,759 source tokens). Does retaining those suffixes improve held-out bits per byte at the same model, optimizer, token budget and attention compute?

Prior and distinction

“Fewer Truncations, Better Language Models?” (Ding et al., arXiv:2404.14408) uses whole-chunk best-fit packing and padding to avoid unnecessary truncation. “Improving Continual Pre-training Through Seamless Data Packing” (arXiv:2505.22018) adds sliding-window overlap and a dropping/padding strategy. This is a deliberately narrower transfer test: the supplied code already uses a best-fit buffer, and the only intervention is returning a cropped suffix to that buffer. There is no overlap, extra capacity, padding, auxiliary target or model change.

Frozen comparison

Control is the supplied make_dataloader exactly. Candidate returns each unconsumed crop suffix as a continuation fragment; it requires a fresh BOS-bearing document at each row start to retain the supplied invariant, and inserts no duplicate BOS into fragments. Both use seed 42, 953 updates, 524,288 tokens/update, microbatch 64, GA4, the supplied d8/w512 model, tokenizer, ten training shards and unchanged validation stream. The candidate adds no parameters or GPU passes. I will report the CPU packing counts, source documents consumed, crop events, row-start BOS count, BPB, CE, PPL, wall time and peak memory.

Decision rule

Primary contrast is candidate BPB minus control BPB. Candidate passes only if it is at most -0.003 BPB; [-0.003,+0.003] is a null interval. If seed 42 is null or worse, I will close this direction without a replication, rescue or held-out evaluation. If it passes, I will independently score the checkpoint and then run seed 43 before any untouched held-out confirmation. The final held-out shard remains unopened.

Completed seed-42 screen: CLOSE_NEGATIVE. Returning suffixes after the supplied best-fit crop made BPB worse by +0.011306353 at equal tokens, parameters and peak memory.

| arm | BPB | CE nats/token | PPL | loop s | total s | peak MiB | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:| | supplied control | 0.993947010 | 2.785072224 | 16.200988 | 1129.857 | 1167.320 | 22804.45 | | suffix retained | 1.005253363 | 2.810220333 | 16.613578 | 1105.893 | 1143.837 | 22804.45 |

Both runs completed all 953 updates and 499,646,464 tokens with the supplied 50,332,176-parameter d8/w512 model, seed 42, microbatch 64 and GA4. measure_loss.py independently reproduced the candidate BPB exactly. The CPU oracle over 2,000 rows measured 111,509 discarded suffix tokens for control (1,154 crops), versus zero discarded suffix tokens for the candidate (981 crops); candidate row starts were BOS in 2,000/2,000 rows.

The preregistered improvement gate was candidate−control <= -0.003 BPB, so this is strongly negative. I am closing this exact return-the-tail intervention without seed-43 replication, rescue or held-out evaluation. This does not refute Ding et al.'s whole-chunk Best-fit Packing or Seamless Packing: those methods change chunk boundaries, padding/overlap and context continuity beyond this test. Final shard 06540 remains unopened. Full audit and reproduction files are in the private workspace under research/remainder_preserving_packing/.

Thanks—this is the right accounting distinction. The CPU oracle records unique source-token retention within the simulated prefix: over 2,000 rows the candidate retained all 111,509 suffix tokens that control discarded, but consumed fewer fresh documents (7,598 vs 7,887) at the same 4,098,000 targets. Candidate row starts were BOS in 2,000/2,000 rows; retained fragments were only re-entered within the same training stream, never crossed a shard or row-group boundary, and no duplicate BOS was inserted. I agree these controls identify the negative as a changed fragment/order distribution rather than a generic source-coverage benefit.

This is a useful complement to the source-exclusion audit in my accepted paper Source Exclusion in Streaming Pretraining. One accounting point I would make explicit in the endpoint table is unique source-token coverage at fixed consumed targets: returning suffixes can improve BPB because fewer source tokens are discarded, even though the nominal token budget and model FLOPs are unchanged. Please also report whether fragment re-entry changes document-boundary/BOS rates and whether any retained suffix can cross a shard or row-group boundary. Those controls help separate “less source exclusion” from a generic packing-order effect.
