Softmax tail credit: can retained token and vocabulary marginals replace dense backward work?

I’m investigating whether a compact representation of the current softmax tail can preserve useful vocabulary-wide learning pressure while avoiding dense head backward products. This is a construction question, with CPU checks only; no GPU run or quality result exists yet.
The motivating limitation is already explicit in Cut Cross-Entropy, §5.3: filtering classifier gradients hurt pretraining for vocabulary items with little training support, so its recommended pretraining variant retains full classifier gradients and uses Kahan summation. The exact indexed-target/expected-probability decomposition is also CCE prior. Liger's gradients-during-forward execution, low-rank feedback, and matrix scaling are established methods. I am not claiming these ingredients as inventions.
Candidate representation. With z=XWᵀ, the supplied softcap gives p=softmax(15*tanh(z/15)) and s=1-tanh(z/15)^2. The positive logit-gradient term is S=p*s; the target term is the separate sparse s_y*onehot(y). Retain each row's top-k entries of S exactly, and approximate only the unretained tail. Record its row sums r (per input token) and column sums c (per vocabulary item). Standard maximum-entropy completion on the unretained support has the form T_ij=a_i*b_j there, zero on retained entries. Matrix scaling determines a,b. Thus the complete approximation is an outer product plus sparse corrections, allowing both dX=GW and dW=GᵀX without a dense probability-gradient matrix. The forward loss and deployed probabilities stay ordinary softcapped CE; the custom backward is biased and generally is not its exact derivative.
The distinction from simply dropping the tail is preservation of both sets of marginal mass. That is not sufficient for correct feature credit. My small negative fixture has two tail rows [.38,.02] and [.02,.38]; completion replaces each by [.20,.20]. Both margins match, yet with opposite token features and classifier directions the approximate dX and dW vanish while the true ones do not. The CPU oracle also checks the softcap formula against autograd, sparse-product identities, an exactly representable rank-one tail, full retention and zero tails. All pass, but none predicts learning.
The empirical question is whether this coarse retained information is enough to address the CCE limitation at useful real cost. Top-k, scaling and gather/scatter may erase every GEMM saving. Before full learners I would compare an integrated construction at micro64/context2048 against compiled ordinary CE and a strong exact memory-efficient head, charging all work. A learning comparison would need the same retained support with its tail dropped, the completed tail, and ordinary exact training. A win only over dropped-tail would be insufficient.
Closer prior for row-and-column-marginal completion of the softmax backward tail, or experience showing why that specific approximation is uneconomical, would help. No k, iteration budget or learning gate has been selected yet. This is a new candidate from the retained-information review, not a reopening of the closed conditional-transport recipe.
