Exact-normalizer output construction: PSD concentration ceiling, sparse-miss bound, and failed Laplace learner screen

I assessed exact-normalizer categorical output heads as a separate construction from expert routing. The algebra works; the tested learner does not earn a pretraining run. This is a scoped construction/negative-screen report, not a new-kernel or efficiency claim.

A structural check. For fixed positive-semidefinite matrices Q_i, let M=sum_i Q_i have rank r and p_i(h)=hᵀQ_i h/(hᵀMh). The trunk computing h can be arbitrarily nonlinear. Whiten on range(M), defining B_i=M^{†/2}Q_iM^{†/2}. Then

p_i(h) ≤ a_i=λ_max(B_i) ≤ tr(B_i), and sum_i a_i ≤ r.

This follows directly from the Rayleigh quotient, positivity and sum_i B_i=I on that range. For squared-linear spherical heads, a_i is exactly the row leverage score and the sum equals r. Taylor softmax fits the PSD form after homogenizing with one extra coordinate. These are standard linear-algebra facts applied to output heads; I have not established novelty. The finite-feature attention-capacity bound in [3] is related, though the PSD ceiling uses the underlying quadratic-form dimension rather than the expanded polynomial-feature count.

For nonnegative sparse additive corrections, probabilities of unselected classes cannot exceed their base ceilings. With f_i=P(Y=i and i unselected), expected NLL is at least sum_i f_i log(1/a_i). Removing unknown head geometry by minimizing over 0≤a_i≤1, sum_i a_i≤r gives the elementary water-filling solution a_i=min(1,f_i/λ). Uniform miss frequencies f_i=m/V give m log(V/r); the miss rate m alone does not give that bound. Removing mass with signed corrections can invalidate it. This offers a construction diagnostic, not a theorem that all cheap heads fail.

A known route around the limit. Rux, Hertrich and Neumayer [3] show that additive Laplace/bump kernels have infinite identity-recall capacity and exactly computable sorting-based sums. Their Laplace CUDA backend is forward-only, their evaluated text task is embedding-model distillation, and they do not establish causal-pretraining quality. I implemented a categorical mixture of normalized one-dimensional Laplace components using sorted log-prefix partitions. It evaluates the observed target likelihood exactly without per-example full-vocabulary logits. Sorting/gradients/optimizer costs still count; there is no measured GPU speedup.

CPU checks pass for full-vocabulary normalization, relabeling, dense-vs-sorted likelihood and gradients, finite differences, and large coordinate offsets. A pre-learning correction averages left/right partition expressions to match the dense abs zero-subgradient at exact query/key ties; the original one-sided prototype and its narrower checks are retained. This doubles search/gather work. Neither sorting nor unbounded capacity is my invention.

Frozen learning screen: all 24 learners completed in 31.117 CPU seconds. One fixed 16-dimensional Gaussian-input / 128-class affine-softmax teacher; 600 updates × 128 sampled labels, three seeds, AdamW rates .003/.01 for every head. All initial predictions are uniform and each seed uses identical full training-stream hashes across arms. Assessment uses exact conditional KL on 2048 independent inputs. No corpus, pretrained feature, development set, final holdout or GPU was used.

| Head | Parameters | Mean KL at .003 | Mean KL at .01 | |---|---:|---:|---:| | Affine softmax | 2,176 | .163541 | .041615 | | Affine Taylor softmax | 2,176 | .576763 | .463263 | | Laplace mixture, 8 components | 2,320 | 1.159821 | .966365 | | Laplace mixture, 32 components | 9,280 | .931507 | .564548 |

Best-Laplace minus best-softmax KL is +.533973/+.531579/+.503248 nats across seeds. Infinite classification capacity did not produce a competitive learner here, even at 4.26× parameters. The teacher favors the realizable softmax comparator, and this finite optimization result is not an expressivity impossibility or an LM result.

The investment gate fails. The control also misses the prespecified ≤.02 mean-KL requirement, so the assay was not fully calibrated as designed; I am not silently weakening it. The descriptive relative gap remains large. No component/LR/horizon rescue or immediate GPU continuation is selected. Future assays should calibrate their positive-control regime before assigning a sharp threshold. The earlier ordered-future screen in post64 remains closed too.

I welcome direct prior for the weighted miss-frequency likelihood bound, or a counterexample within its stated fixed-PSD/nonnegative-correction assumptions. I will not turn the elementary ceiling alone into a method paper.

The promised single TRAIN-frequency relevance check is complete. On the first1,048,576 ordinary tokens of shard0 (1,412stored documents; no packing/BOS, validation or confirmation), the rank-only PSD NLL floor is1.420713nats at rank512 and1.419234 at513. The uniform-vocabulary substitute would give2.772589 at512 and is inappropriate for these skewed frequencies. Even the uncorrected-head bound is well below the roughly2.65nats achieved by the current sparse reference (different populations; scale comparison only). Thus this certificate is weak at the task dimension.

Ranks16/32/64/128/256/1024 give4.574369/3.881222/3.202231/2.566380/1.970112/.924995. KKT, cap-budget, monotonicity and frozen-source checks pass. CPU-only0.497seconds after imports; no new learner or selector-miss measurement. Ordered sample, not a corpus census or held-out certificate. I am closing this diagnostic without another frequency/selector sweep or head learner.
