Frozen normal-direction signal diagnostic — 2026-10-10
Question: does a small normal-gradient direction chosen on a fixed TRAIN discovery panel align with separate TRAIN examples at the preserved factor endpoints? This is not a method, new geometry, optimizer comparison or validation-quality test. Prior and precise reading scope: literature/normal_refresh/READING.md. DLRT, SDLRT, InRank/GLRL, GDLoRA and rank-adaptive optimization already establish the relevant decomposition, gradient growth and retention mechanisms.
Frozen observations
Two descriptive trained states: original factor-reference endpoint and best ordinary025 cautious-decay endpoint. Their selection/history is disclosed; no causal comparison of these optimizers is possible here. Hashes in manifest.json. All 16 rank256 FFN projections; no layer selection. Original train loader/tokenizer, context2048, microbatch64. First4 TRAIN batches form discovery, next4 assessment; identical token hashes checked across states. Each panel524288targets, per-state 1048576 processed targets, two states2097152. They are previously eligible TRAIN examples, not heldout or source-independent observations. No updates, no validation or finalholdout06540. No minibatch skips/reordering or endpoint selection.
Measurement and execution
Capture module input/output cotangent under native BF16 forward arithmetic. Accumulate G = sum(dY.T @ X_eff) in FP32 (token chunks4096, TF32disabled), where X_eff is input rounded to BF16 as the branch linear's autocast operand. This is an idealized real-valued ambient branch differential lifted from native operands and cotangents. It is NOT bitwise equality with a BF16-autograd added-branch gradient, not reconstruction of native factor gradients, and not the full-precision model's gradient. Native contractions compared separately with L/R gradients.
Memory execution: frozen other parameters; manual identical hidden forward; reentrant per-block checkpointing; output-head loss/hidden cotangent in chunks2048; all-token mean CE with softcap15. No optimizer/head parameter gradient needed. CPU chunk/full head, capture derivative and one-hook-per-recomputation controls pass; planted signal and independent noise controls also pass. GPU capture costs include recomputation; not claimed as an economical online mechanism.
Store eight G matrices per layer/state plus factor snapshots and token hashes. Analyze on CPU FP64. SVD rank-revealing factor bases define normal N=(I-UU.T)G(I-VV.T) and tangent G-N. Select rank8 SVD approximation of discovery N, normalize to unit Frobenius norm. Positive pairing with assessment G predicts first-order descent for a negative ambient update; it says nothing about a rank-preserving exchange. Report normal/tangent energies, cross inner products/cosines, retained rank8 energy, assessment pairings for unit full-normal and full-tangent directions (not rank matched), all four assessment-batch selected pairings, and16 deterministic random rank8-normal controls per layer. Random signs are not selected from assessment. Raw outcomes for every layer/state are retained. No confidence intervals from layers/tokens, no claim of independent replication or heldout generalization.
Prospective allocation rule and bounds
A state passes only if at least12/16layers have positive selected pairing on each of the four assessment batches AND mean selected pairing exceeds all16random controls; the sum of unit-rank8-normal pairings is at least5% of the sum of unit full-tangent pairings (latter positive). This is an arbitrary practical design-work allocation threshold, not significance, intrinsic benefit or matched-rank optimality. Both descriptive states must pass. Native contraction relative discrepancies must have95thpercentile<=.05 and max<=.15 in each state; failure prevents stronger interpretation even though lifted-G remains a defined measurement.
Positive results earn only development of a costed refresh comparison against conventional retraction/augmented basis, random refresh and no refresh, with optimizer-state effects addressed. They do not authorize quality claims, a paper, or automatic full training. Failure closes this finite probe, no panel/rank rescue.
One capture GPU job, timeout600s, internal540s checkpoint, <=1.25GB new tensor outputs. No GPU analysis. At most one implementation repair after a mechanical failure, same observations; all attempts charged within900s total reserved-process wall time. OOM/time/precision failure reported, no changed microbatch/model/panels. No GPU held for analysis/planning. Source and checkpoint hashes frozen in manifest; any repair separately recorded and prospective source hash updated before retry.
Local reproduction: research/normal_signal/{manifest.json,capture.py,analyze.py}; CPU checks in cpu_checks.json and execution_cpu_checks.json. The frozen protocol/source/checkpoint hashes precede GPU launch. Full outcome will be appended to this thread, including failures and costs.
