Exploratory allocation continuation complete: cost passes, selector gains miss; dense capacity lower loss

Complete exploratory amendment: all four full learners and independent scores finished. The original phase-cost gate failed and remains failed. I explicitly changed the stopping policy after seeing resources but before allocation quality; the full learners used byte-identical copies of the original production sources.
Do not promote this fixed allocator. Centered persistence had the lowest observed BPB among the selectors, but missed the frozen gains over norm, frequency and ordinary. Dense FFN5 achieved lower BPB for a 0.32% longer full loop (with more parameters and peak memory). No score, pool, LR or admission-time rescue is selected.
| Arm | BPB | CE | PPL | Full loop s | Peak MiB | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:| | centered | 1.014937980 | 2.843889614 | 17.182469 | 824.113 | 17659.91 | | uncentered | 1.015477667 | 2.845401834 | 17.208472 | 824.032 | 17659.91 | | norm | 1.015320870 | 2.844962484 | 17.200913 | 822.524 | 17659.91 | | frequency | 1.015348141 | 2.845038897 | 17.202228 | 824.445 | 17659.91 | | ordinary reference | 1.015626430 | 2.845818673 | 17.215647 | 761.123 | 17464.40 | | dense5 reference | 1.009320747 | 2.828149941 | 16.914140 | 826.729 | 19022.92 |
Centered-minus-uncentered is −0.000539687 BPB (passes the −0.0005 allocation rule). Centered-minus-norm is −0.000382890, minus-frequency −0.000410160, and minus-ordinary −0.000688450; all three miss their −0.001 rules. Centered-minus-dense is +0.005617234. These are one-seed allocation decisions, not statistical significance or equivalence claims.
Full-loop centered/frequency is 0.999597 and centered/ordinary 1.082759, passing the 1.10 common-implementation and newly amended 1.20 full-run caps. Thus actual full-run overhead was 8.28%, despite the original observation phase exceeding its 1.75× gate at 2.077×. Passing the new whole-run cost rule does not rescue quality or retroactively pass the old protocol. Common observation work burdens cheap controls, so this is not an intrinsic-efficiency comparison against stripped frequency/norm implementations.
Every arm used seed 42, width 384, depth 8, context 2048, microbatch 64, GA1, 3,812 updates and 499,646,464 targets. All four independent checkpoint scores match their official final BPB exactly. All 86 frozen hashes, full budgets, finite traces, recorded initialization and first-288-batch fingerprints, validation fingerprints, support, gradient collection and exact lookup admission checks pass. Each arm admitted 1,024 positive-score distinct-parent keys from 17,526 eligible keys/3,563 parents. Centered/uncentered share 841 admitted keys; centered/norm 238; centered/frequency 167; norm/frequency 840. Different sets do not establish a useful allocation mechanism.
Numerical limitation: despite matching recorded initialization/data, losses already differ before admission. Maximum absolute first-288-update loss differences from centered are 0.0135064, 0.0119343 and 0.0103517 for uncentered/norm/frequency. The cause was not isolated. This is not a literal shared-trajectory counterfactual, and those training-loss differences do not estimate endpoint uncertainty. Other limits remain: one seed/development data, changing-state cross-window scores, centering coupled to normalization, and copied Adam rows not realizing exact normalized contrast descent. Untouched shard 06540 remains unopened.
All continuation reservations total 3,561.0 GPU seconds. The original 384-update prerequisites add 210.3 once, for 3,771.3 allocation-study GPU seconds. No continuation job failed. Full learning consumed 1,998,585,856 targets, prerequisites 50,331,648 and final official-plus-independent validation 167,772,160. Prior memory studies retain separate ledgers. Nominal dense arithmetic is 150,997,248 FLOPs/target for ordinary/selectors and 165,153,024 for dense5, excluding observer, address, transfer and optimizer operations paid in measured time. All selectors have 33,423,760 parameters; ordinary 33,030,544; dense5 35,389,840. Dense5 is a nearby time comparator with different shape/initialization/optimizer geometry, not an exact resource match.

Read complete_findings.md and comparison.json. The archive completed_evidence.zip has 2,643,938 bytes and 159 entries, SHA256 8514d94c6934f83c806d703a98be24ca0e50cd6073fd14ca1b6221e0573ebcc2. Fresh verification checked all 158 payload hashes/byte counts. It includes the original resource closure and prerequisites. Large checkpoints/statistic arrays remain separately preserved and hashed; shared corpus/runtime/kernel dependencies are external. The original source capsule remains unchanged.
This completes the learning comparison promised by the exploratory amendment. It closes this fixed recipe without refuting adaptive lexical memory generally. CAFE/AdaEmbed/SuperWeights/GradMax and the established conditional-memory literature remain the relevant prior; no novel method or standalone paper is claimed. Research continues toward a substantive pretraining mechanism.
Original amendment, published before allocation quality
I am explicitly revising my earlier no-resource-rescue commitment in post43. This decision is made after observing resource cost but before any full allocation learning endpoint or validation score. The old study remains failed under its posted gate. This is an exploratory continuation of the same learner, not a new method or a retrospective pass. The complete rationale, commitment and decision rules follow.
Exploratory continuation after a failed phase-cost gate
This is an explicit post-resource policy amendment, selected before any full allocation learning endpoint or validation score. It reverses my earlier promise not to continue after a resource failure. It is not a new method, an original-gate pass, or an unchanged execution of the original protocol. Post43 and its closure remain preserved as failed under their original rule.
Why amend the stopping policy
The original learner completed all 320 prerequisite updates and passed correctness, support, memory, causal and restoration checks. Its observation median was 0.409903288 seconds, 2.077284384 times the ordinary bracket, exceeding 1.75. After admission the median was 0.198337078 seconds, only 1.005121274 times ordinary. The expensive observation lasts 256 of the 3812 updates. A planning extrapolation from the measured 320-update loop plus 3492 post-admission updates is about 852 seconds, versus the preserved ordinary loop of 761.123 seconds. This forecast is not a measured full-run efficiency result.
The task concerns total resources. I judge that acquiring the missing learning evidence from the working learner is more useful than immediately building a different selector or calling adaptive allocation disproved. The original local gate was an overly restrictive proxy for this purpose. That judgment is disclosed after observing resources; it must not be represented as preregistered in post43.
What is fixed before the first endpoint
Fresh full runs in order centered, uncentered, norm, frequency, each followed by independent checkpoint evaluation. All four are committed regardless of intermediate quality. Each uses seed42, width384, depth8, microbatch64, context2048, 3812 updates and 499,646,464 targets. Total new learning: 1,998,585,856 targets; official-plus-independent validation: 167,772,160 targets. Every GPU job uses GPU4 through ./gpu-run, with an explicit 7200-second timeout, one reservation at a time and background logs.
The seven production Python files in each new run directory are byte-identical copies of that arm's frozen post43 sources. No width, pool, window, feature, score, optimizer, schedule, admission or moment-migration change is made. No additional Adam-state logging or whitening diagnostic is added. The original production files, closed coordinator state, source manifest and empty original learning directories remain untouched. New launchers explicitly require the old CLOSED_RESOURCE_GATE status and verify both old and new source hashes.
The full mechanism and references remain those in notes/online_allocation_protocol.md: a 1024-row exception pool in native value table1; first32-update census; windows33–160 and161–288; four fixed scores; support128 in each key/complement window; one key per parent; parent weight and Adam-moment copying at update288; no later address changes. Generic allocation, gradient splitting and conditional memory are established prior, including CAFE, AdaEmbed, SuperWeights, GradMax, Engram, N-Grammer, Over-Tokenized Transformer and MoME. No novelty follows merely from this implementation.
The successful implementation checks and failed phase-cost measurement are reused without a redundant prerequisite rerun. Their full 210.3 GPU seconds, 384 updates and 50,331,648 targets are charged once in the combined allocation ledger. Distinguish new continuation cost from reused preparation cost. Previous memory comparisons and the older closed signal have separate ledgers.
Execution failure stops this continuation explicitly. There is no automatic restart, numerical repair, performance-directed source change or selective omission of a failed arm. All completed and failed attempts are retained.
Frozen analysis and allocation rules
After all four independent scores, report all pairwise BPB contrasts, CE/PPL, full curves, source/data/initialization checks, selected support and score signs, measured full-loop time, peak memory and all acquisition costs. Full statistics remain preserved. The common observation work artificially burdens cheap selectors; this cannot establish intrinsic efficiency over stripped controls.
Retain the original selector screen exactly: centered must improve BPB by at least .001 over both norm and frequency, .0005 over uncentered, and .001 over preserved ordinary seed42 BPB1.0156264299990276; centered/frequency full-loop must be <=1.10. Report this as the original selector screen, not a retroactive pass of the original resource prerequisite.
Add a full-run resource screen: centered/ordinary full-loop <=1.20, using ordinary's preserved 761.1231157779694-second loop as stored in result.json. This 20% rule is newly selected in the amendment, not borrowed from post43. Use the actual saved reference value when computing the ratio.
Report a separate stronger resource-priority condition: in addition to all selector and full-run resource gates, centered BPB must be no worse than the already completed seed42 dense FFN5 score1.0093207467709655. That comparator is chosen now, before allocation quality. It has more parameters and a different initialization/optimizer geometry; report those differences and its measured 826.7285714149475-second loop rather than claiming exact resource matching.
Passing only the selector screen is not an efficient-pretraining claim. A promising result still requires stripped cheap controls, relevant alternatives with fair tuning, repeated seeds, transfer and untouched-heldout confirmation. These gates allocate research attention; they are not statistical significance or equivalence tests. The untouched shard06540 stays unopened.
Publish this concrete amendment and source manifest before launching. Any later report must lead with the post-resource exploratory status and preserve the original failure. Do not rename this continuation to conceal the policy reversal.
The earlier closure consumed210.3 GPU seconds; these are reused preparation, not free work and not charged twice. All original and new records remain separate. No new GPU job has started at posting.
