All three committed full runs and independent checkpoint evaluations are complete. The normalized-innovation predictor misses its prespecified learning threshold.

Primary innovation−base = −.000238787176, below the predeclared .001 improvement threshold. Raw−base = −.000621279027; innovation−raw = +.000382491851. Innovation is .003083285975 worse than the preserved best empirical .980649012463. All independent BPB differences are exactly zero. Every arm has seed43, micro64,3812updates,499646464targets and50332176parameters. Frozen sources and initial parameter/data hashes pass. Historical controls use different sampling/implementation paths; this does not isolate a shuffling effect.
Full learning curves are close and finite. The innovation arm's median correction/empirical-innovation norm is .351978 overall/.339935 late; its median selected/empirical squared norm is .968138/.990002. There are77sparse records per arm, only4in the declared late subset. These changing-state descriptions do not estimate conditional variance reduction, and separate medians cannot reconstruct an energy identity. The raw and innovation arms fit different targets and maintain different normalization histories; no unique mediator is established. The common-state mean identity remains standard control-variate algebra, not a claim about final expected weights or improvement.
Allocation: close this fixed predictor conversion without coefficient/decay/floor grids and deprioritize further output-head noise removal. The thresholds are allocation rules, not significance tests. No seed uncertainty, tuned alternatives, transfer or untouched confirmation is claimed; shard06540 remains untouched. This belongs in the completed discussion, not a thin standalone negative paper.
All-attempt cost is 3721.0GPU5seconds:3555.2full training/evaluation plus165.8prerequisites, including the retained failed bitwise assertion. New preprocessing8.6589CPU seconds, numerical/data checks3.4489, gradient audit.8093; inherited row materialization155.556seconds disclosed separately. Model arithmetic119.454677PFLOPs/run; no extra backbone pass/dense contraction. Pointwise arithmetic, memory traffic and compilation are assessed by measured time. Common arms pay for both candidate paths, so this does not compare with a stripped base implementation.

Large checkpoints/arrays are separately hashed and retained. REPRODUCE.md provides the portable preparation path; actual preparation was verified, while the standalone full row-regeneration helper was only syntax/CLI checked.
Additional direct prior discovered during execution: Nayak et al., https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.20756v1. Their target is population-preconditioned descent, unlike our base-algorithm mean. LITERATURE_ADDENDUM.md records the distinction and reading scope. It changes no frozen computation or allocation.

Selected comparison: predict raw gradients versus normalized innovations
Selected 2026-10-09 after completion, analysis, archive verification and reporting of the head-grafting factorial. The primary em−ee result was +0.004507 BPB, closing the model-score direction/magnitude rescue route. No further model-score tuning is selected.
Learning question and prior
Can a cheap causal predictor of the actual normalized head response improve learning where a predictor applied before nonlinear normalization does not? This changes the predicted quantity and the actual centering distribution. It uses no model-label Fisher statistic, approximate common feature, grafting, extra backbone pass or frozen-checkpoint predictor. The previous common-feature raw controls' local variance gains did not yield a better endpoint. That lowers the prior for this head-only direction; conditional centering alone is not a reason to expect useful learning.
The identities are standard control variates. LaProp supplies normalized-momentum ordering. AdaSecant1412.7419v5 §5.3 already controls block-normalized gradients. Nobile/Raviola/Schaeffer2507.20981v3 §§2.1/2.3.1 supply direct prior for past-fitted regression controls with known conditional means. MARS2411.10438v4 and VRADAM2210.05607v2 are relevant raw-gradient alternatives. See literature/update_controls/READING.md. No new theorem or broadly novel optimization principle is claimed. This is a bounded attempt to convert a distinct object of prediction into complete learning evidence.
Sampling and predictor
Use the already verified baseline_rows.npy, exactly 3812 complete micro64 batches of 2048 targets/sequence. Randomize whole batches without replacement with a dedicated NumPy PCG64 generator seeded20261009. Within-batch rows and token ordering are unchanged. All arms receive the same permutation and 499646464 targets. Theoretical conditional expectations concern this randomized algorithm given the past and remaining batch multiset, not a deterministic guarantee conditioned on a revealed future permutation.
Precompute class counts n_b(v) for each full batch. At each step, r_b(v)=(n_b(v)−mean_R n(v))/std_R n(v) under the remaining uniform batch distribution. Set r=0 where the remaining variance is zero. Compute population moments from exact int64 sums and squared sums, then form descriptors in FP64 and store FP32. Count support can be highly skewed; no Gaussian assumption. The final remaining batch has descriptor zero. Account for new preprocessing and descriptor storage separately from inherited155.556-second row materialization.
Maintain head-sized raw and normalized predictor rows A_g,A_z, initialized0. Before using the current batch, their values depend only on previous steps. For an ordinary empirical gradient g, form empirical v_e=.95v_e+.05g² and z_e=g/(sqrt(v_e/(1−.95^t))+1e−10). Let old bias-corrected running means mu_g,mu_z track actual g,z_e with decay.8. At step1 these old means are zero. Use old A for the current correction, then update predictors for FUTURE steps:
A_g←.95A_g+.05(g−mu_g)r; A_z←.95A_z+.05(z_e−mu_z)r.
Predictors have no bias correction: zero initialization gives a fixed gradual start. Their time constant equals the existing second-moment decay. No new coefficient, clipping, norm matching, floor, sample-size choice or validation tuning. All applied controls have coefficient1. The predictor can be inaccurate and increase variance. Subtracting a predictable old mean leaves the expected cross-moment unchanged; it does not guarantee accurate tracking across evolving states.
Three common-computation arms
- base: feed z_e into normalized momentum.
- raw: g_c=g−A_g*r; maintain v_c=.95v_c+.05g_c² and feed z_c=g_c/(sqrt(v_c/(1−.95^t))+eps) into normalized momentum.
- innovation: feed z_i=z_e−A_z*r into normalized momentum.
Every arm computes both second moments, both predictors, both old-mean trackers and all candidate innovations. One selected normalized first moment drives the weight update, with beta1=.8 and its usual bias correction. No head weight decay. All other parameters, optimizer equations and learning schedules retain the strong GA1 recipe. Use seed43, micro64,3812updates, original head LR .004sqrt(768/512), eps1e−10, matrix WD.05.
At a common pre-step augmented state, the innovation correction has zero conditional mean; normalized momentum and the intended weight update are affine in this innovation. Their one-step conditional means match base, while the empirical second-moment transition is unchanged. Auxiliary tracker transitions are common. The raw correction preserves raw-gradient conditional mean but generally changes expected nonlinear optimizer transitions. These are real-arithmetic properties, not claims about FP32 writes, equal trajectory laws, equal expected final weights or useful variance reduction. The raw/innovation algorithms also predict different quantities, so their endpoint difference is not by itself a causal mediation proof for drift preservation.
Prerequisites and full-run commitment
First verify finite-population counts/standardization against independent enumeration, including zero variance and the last batch. Verify the recurrence and conditional-mean identities with independent FP64 equations. Check compiled parameter writes, old-versus-new coefficient ordering, zero corrections and extreme standardized counts. Quantify FP32 rounding separately. Then run five48-update resource smokes: literal empirical LaProp before, common base/raw/innovation, literal after, with the same shuffled loader. No held-out scoring in smokes. Require finite traces, common initial/data hashes, first-gradient agreement within documented embedding nondeterminism, peak<24000MiB and median steady-step overhead≤10% over literal bracket. Retain/charge failed attempts. A numerical or resource repair may change implementation, not predictor equations or selected learning settings; otherwise close feasibility.
After feasible prerequisites, freeze sources and complete all three full runs and independent saved-checkpoint evaluations without interim selection. Report BPB/CE/PPL, full training curves, parameters, compute estimate, wall time, peak memory and all preprocessing/prerequisite costs. Logs may describe correction sizes and online prediction errors; changing-state measurements are not frozen-state conditional variance estimates.
Primary contrast: innovation−base BPB. Also report raw−base and innovation−raw. An innovation gain≥.003 against both fresh controls and preserved best empirical0.980649012463 prioritizes a paired fresh seed, then symmetric tuning/relevant published alternatives and transfer. A raw-only gain does not confirm the normalized-response conjecture and requires separate reassessment. If innovation fails to improve the fresh base by.001, close this fixed predictor conversion without a coefficient/decay/floor grid and deprioritize further output-head noise-removal work. Between.001 and.003 is exploratory, not automatic expansion. These are allocation rules, not significance tests. The untouched confirmation stream remains untouched.
CPU prerequisites: 3812 complete batches and the unused final prefetch match the existing materialization. Independent Python counts agree on eight separated batches. Four finite-population conditional-mean cases pass. New count/descriptor preprocessing costs8.659 CPU seconds; its largest stored standardized count is51.797, confirming the rare-event concern. Selected population centering errors after FP32 casting are at most3.73e-8. No learning result exists. GPU checking first rejected an overstrong literal/common bitwise assertion after the independent FP64 recurrences passed; that attempt is retained and the numerical discrepancy is being quantified. Training equations are unchanged.
