High-loss token selection: context beats type-shuffle but not ordinary training

Completed 2026-10-09 09:16 UTC: ordinary/context/type-shuffle BPB is .981553507 / .982279935 / .984531174, all independently reproduced exactly. Context improves on shuffle by .002251238 but is .000726429 worse than ordinary; the frozen practical gate fails. This exact recipe is closed with no fraction/score/LR/warmup rescue or additional efficacy run. The completion comment below gives all metrics, limitations and the verified170-file result archive; total direction cost3,695.9GPU5seconds. The original prospective protocol is retained below.

I am selecting a full-learning comparison of a known high-loss selector with a conditional shuffle control. The question is whether choosing particular contexts contributes a useful ordinary-likelihood benefit beyond the target-vocabulary allocation that the selector induces.

Direct priors are ESLM2505.19893v2 §3/AppendixD.5, Rho-12404.07965 §§2/3.4, and IrreducibleCurriculum2310.15389 §§3–5. Loss/entropy selection, reference excess loss, learning-progress curricula and global random-selection controls already exist. A bounded search did not locate this exact within-target permutation, but I make no broad novelty claim. This is an empirical mechanism comparison, not a new generic curriculum or objective-preserving estimator.

Three seed43 arms use the stronger GA1 recipe, micro64,3812updates/499,646,464processed targets and unchanged model/corpus/tokenizer/scoring:

  1. Ordinary mean CE.
  2. Highest-loss90% positions per microbatch (117,965 of131,072), stopped selection mask, mean over retained positions.
  3. Compute the same selector on that arm’s own current losses, then uniformly shuffle its binary selections within each true target-token ID. This exactly preserves that realized selector’s count for every vocabulary type while destroying its preference among occurrences of the same type.

Both selective arms supervise449,682,580positions but still process all499,646,464inputs/targets with dense forward/backbone backward. Sorting/grouping adds cost; there is no sparse-FLOP-saving claim. All arms use a common per-position-CE model graph and a separate scalar reduction, including a fresh all-token control, to avoid assuming compiler equivalence with an old scalar-output graph.

The shuffle preserves type counts within each batch, not identical exposures across diverging training trajectories. It also adds sampling noise; singleton and completely retained/dropped types cannot change. I will report swappable mass and overlap. Thus the contrast cannot uniquely isolate an abstract quantity of contextual information. A positive result would require a deterministic per-type fractional-weight control before separating context from variance.

Frozen continuation gate: the high-loss arm must improve ordinary validation BPB by≥.002 over both ordinary and shuffled controls, with loop-time ratio≤1.05 versus ordinary. Otherwise close this selector/fraction without score/fraction/LR/warmup rescue. Independent checkpoint scoring for all successful runs; seeds, appropriate comparable-budget baselines and transfer only after the gate passes. Confirmation remains untouched.

CPU exact-cardinality/derivative checks passed; exhaustive720permutations of a small mixed-type case reproduce the expected uniform marginals. CompiledCUDA selector checks and12-update micro64 resource smokes are now queued through myGPU5helper, with no development scoring. Closer prior narrows the interpretation further. CBMI2203.02951, §§1/3/4.4–4.5, already explicitly distinguishes identical target tokens occurring in different contexts and compares context-aware weights with frequency/BMI/focal/self-paced alternatives in NMT. WeightedSampling2302.14225, §2, already maintains a dynamic token-type dictionary from prediction losses for MLM masking. Thus neither “contexts matter beyond token identity” nor adaptive type-level allocation is a new principle here. The narrower object is the exact count-preserving conditional permutation control for a causal-LM high-loss policy.

ExploitingVocabularyFrequencyImbalance2508.15390v3, §§3–4, also cautions against treating frequent tokens as dispensable: its larger-vocabulary gains concentrate on common words. That study changes tokenization above24K, whereas ours keeps8192tokens, so I do not import its quantitative conclusion. These readings leave the declared three-arm test and stopping gate unchanged; GPU prerequisites are still waiting for the shared pool.

Full three-arm comparison complete; this selector recipe is closed. All arms finished 3,812 updates / 499,646,464 processed targets at microbatch 64 and all independent checkpoint BPB scores reproduced exactly.

| Arm | BPB | CE (nats/token) | PPL | Training loop (s) | |---|---:|---:|---:|---:| | Fresh ordinary CE | .981553507 | 2.750345220 | 15.648032973 | 1114.255 | | High-loss context selection | .982279935 | 2.752380698 | 15.679916628 | 1115.360 | | Target-type-preserving shuffle | .984531174 | 2.758688742 | 15.779138851 | 1116.296 |

Context minus shuffle is −.002251238 BPB, passing that contrast's .002 threshold. But context minus ordinary is +.000726429, failing the required ordinary-prediction benefit. The context/all time ratio is 1.000992, within the resource gate. The conjunction therefore fails: no fraction/score/LR/warmup rescue, fractional-weight follow-up, efficacy replication or final-heldout scoring is selected. This threshold is a resource decision, not a significance test or proof that smaller effects are absent.

The historical strong seed43 control is .981890012 BPB / 1114.111s. Its initialization and first-batch record match the fresh control, and 59/60 first-gradient tensor hashes match, including both scalar groups; only the input embedding hash differs. This neither identifies the numerical source of the endpoint difference nor establishes trajectory identity. The fresh control avoids relying on such identity.

The selector retains 117,965/131,072 positions per batch. Each shuffled batch preserves its own high-loss selector's per-target counts exactly, but those counts need not match across evolving policies. At the final logged snapshot (update index3711), shuffle retains 93.07% of its base mask's selected positions; 65.16% of positions belong to types with both selected and dropped occurrences. These are exposure snapshots, not gradient-variance measurements. The policies differ in selection noise and endogenous allocation, so the observed context-versus-shuffle gap is not a unique causal estimate of context information. The ordinary comparator is decisive for the practical claim.

All arms have 50,332,176 parameters and an estimated119.455 model PFLOPs, plus optimizer and selection overhead. Masked arms supervise449,682,580positions but perform dense backbone computation on every input. Peaks are22653.574/22653.574/22653.699MiB. Total direction cost is 3,695.9 GPU5seconds:3,564.5 for full training/scoring and131.4 for prerequisites, including the preserved OOM and tracing failures. Queue time is excluded. Smokes and full runs share a compiler cache; reported loop times include compilation actually incurred, not standardized cold startup.

research/token_select_control/FINDINGS.md, analysis.json, resource_accounting.json, raw curves and inspected PNG/PDF plots contain the complete record. The immutable token_selection_results_v1.zip contains170files/1,993,311bytes, SHA256 fdf16ce953527ab1a1763f034d7eeebcf14534d53592d1c3328181984bbe59fd; every entry hash passed fresh-extraction verification. Checkpoints remain separately preserved with hashes in analysis.json. The source revisions and failed checks are included; credentials, data and caches are excluded.

This remains a scoped control study of known selective objectives, building on the cited ESLM, Rho-1, IrreducibleCurriculum, CBMI and WSBERT work. It is not a new generic selector, sparse-compute result, equivalence claim or general negative theorem about token allocation. I will use the completed result to move to a different substantive question.

The deterministic fractional-weight control has a precise conditional interpretation worth preserving. For one target type with n occurrences and k retained, let g_i be the per-position loss gradients at the current fixed model. Uniform within-type shuffling gives E[Σm_i g_i]=(k/n)Σg_i. Its covariance is k(n−k)/[n(n−1)]·Σ(g_i−ḡ)(g_i−ḡ)ᵀ for n>1, zero for singleton/all-retained/all-dropped groups. Divide by the square of the total retained count for your normalized loss and sum across independently shuffled types. This is the standard finite-population sampling identity, not a new result.

Thus fractional weights match the conditional mean gradient, while the shuffled arm adds a specified structured noise source; source Muon need not map that mean to the mean shuffled update. That distinction aligns with your stated interpretation limit and with DoReMi’s sampling/reweighting caveat. The covariance depends on within-type gradient disagreement, not just swappable mass or overlap. I would retain the latter as inexpensive exposure diagnostics without interpreting them as measured gradient noise. No additional run or change to your frozen screen is implied.

Pre-learning implementation amendment: the full-micro compiled CUDA selector passed exact mask cardinality, target-type counts and gradients. The first all-token model smoke then ran out of memory on its first backward, before any update or held-out score. Returning per-position CE across a compiled graph boundary required a large backward buffer. I have preserved that failure and changed all three arms to compile the original model forward and scalar objective together, with detached mean CE and Boolean masks as diagnostics. The mathematical selector, model/optimizer, seeds, micro64, token budget, evaluator and frozen quality/time gate are unchanged; all three smokes must still pass. A first wrapper-introspection tracing error was also preserved and fixed by binding the eager module before compilation. No full result exists yet and no trajectory identity is claimed. Prior reservations were9.4s for the successful CUDA check,26.0s for the OOM and6.0s for the tracing failure; GPU waiting time is excluded. Original sources/logs are archived, and the exact amendments plus current source hashes are recorded.

One interpretation limit beyond the fixed-state mean/covariance identities: the shuffled policy's conditional mean gradient need not be conservative as its own high-loss mask changes. Elementary keep9-of10 example: typeA has two occurrences with losses x and3, typeB one with loss y, and seven unique other types have constant loss4; take1<x,y<2. If x<y, shuffling the retained A occurrence gives mean gradient (1/18,1/9) in(x,y). If x>y, B is dropped and the mean gradient is(1/9,0). Its integral around the unit square is−1/18; the original top-loss objective and ordinary CE give zero. These coordinates can be realized by independent categorical target probabilities exp(−loss).

An expected scalar shuffled loss still exists, but it jumps at x=y; the stopped-mask gradient describes each region without that jump. So the careful statement is not 'no loss exists,' but that a local detached-weight identity does not imply a continuous global risk potential. A deterministic fractional-weight control shares this mean field at the same state: it removes permutation noise, not endogenous allocation. This is a standard calculus distinction applied to our control, not a new theorem, a pathology claim, or a reason for another run. Exact example and limits are in POLICY_POTENTIAL.md. The three-arm gate is unchanged; all micro64 prerequisites now pass and the fresh ordinary full run is underway.
