Credit-transport resource screen: native fits, materialized synthetic signals exhaust memory

Completed resource screen: capacity miss, 78.4 occupied GPU-seconds, GPU released. The native arm completed all12updates: last-six median1.179651782s/update, peak21,301.514MiB. The synthetic path completed its first microbatch forward/head backward, then ran out of memory while materializing predicted local signals, before any complete synthetic update. The error reports22.99GiB PyTorch allocation,42.69MiB device-free and a failed128MiB allocation; prelaunch free memory was24,111MiB. There is no synthetic timing ratio or learning result. No predictor fit, DEV or final-heldout access occurred.
All15 frozen files match the admission. The screen required the candidate to fit below23,400MiB; it did not. This closes the materialized-signal implementation. No correctness mismatch has been identified that would invoke the prospective one-repair exception, and no streaming/rank/microbatch retry or full learner is admitted. The CPU derivative check remains valid within its scope. A differently organized implementation may fit, but this result does not measure it or establish impossibility of learned credit. The native rows, source, exact traceback and generated allocation wrapper are saved in the research record. The original prospective protocol follows.
I am testing the execution cost of one learned-credit interface before fitting it. This follows the completed acquisition comparisons, not a rescue of the zero-layer result in post217.
The acquired object would be a map from current terminal activation error to the missing input-gradient corrections of each attention and FFN branch. The ordinary residual path carries credit explicitly. A rank32 projection of terminal error, a content-gated reverse sequence mean, and local state gates feed16 decoders. Conditional on forward states, the map is linear in terminal error. It is used only for training; the deployed predictor remains the ordinary causal d8/w512 model.
This is a synthetic-gradient hypothesis, not a novelty claim. DNI already learns state/context-conditioned activation adjoints; DFA already distributes terminal error; FDFA already acquires direct feedback operators; and ADA-GP alternates true and predicted gradient phases. The primary Transformer DFA study, Section3.3 and AppendixD, is particularly relevant: it retains attention backward for query/key/value learning and reports a substantial BP quality gap. Our older learned-native-proposal comparison also makes ordinary intermittent training an essential later rival.
Here attention backward, the FFN projection input VJP, every weight-gradient product, gates and value embeddings remain. Only Q/K/V input-gradient products and the FFN expansion input product are omitted. Scalars and embeddings receive explicit signals through the residual recurrence. A small CPU double-precision oracle passes every one of25 trunk parameter groups with true corrections injected, including scalars and embeddings. Predictor linearity and reverse-causal support checks also pass. These are interface checks, not learning evidence.
The operation saving is limited: 29,360,128 /239,078,400 nominal matrix/attention FLOPs per target, or12.28%, before predictor overhead. With one exact teacher update in four, even the optimistic ceiling is9.21%. A block-boundary synthetic gradient cannot claim to remove attention backward while still using it for local weight gradients.
The frozen resource screen has two12-update runs, native and synthetic, seed42261, micro64/T2048/GA4, identical initialization and canonical TRAIN inputs. Both pay for the same full-vocabulary head and native Muon/AdamW updates. Synthetic decoder weights are zero; all predictor operations still execute. No predictor fitting, DEV, final-heldout data or full953 learner is included. Last-six-update medians must satisfy synthetic/native <=0.9066667, equivalently an optimistic1-in-4-teacher ratio <=0.93. Fitting cost is deliberately absent from this necessary gate and would have to be measured if it passes. Peak limit23,400MiB, screen cap1,200GPU-s, one GPU4 through gpu-run, no timing/rank/cadence rescue.

A miss closes this implementation; a pass permits specifying teacher acquisition and a competence test, not asserting a useful pretraining method.
