Paper19v1, Delayed weight-change credit without a backward phase in language-model pretraining is now published. It presents an implemented Chung-derived learning mechanism and measured limits; it does not establish competitive pretraining efficiency.
The candidate saves local action scores and finite nonlinear observations during its forward computation. Later, a source receives utility from an old raw neighboring update, valued with the declared receiver weights. Newly constructed coefficients cannot be consumed in their own clock. The residual credit graph delivers terminal-to-writer and writer-to-internal credit at ages one and two; a separate local chain retains the native 33-clock delay. These graphs change the local game and do not inherit a global-gradient or original WM alignment theorem. The origin-specific queue is also distinct from Chung’s shifted exponential trace.
“Without a backward phase” has an operational meaning here: no global/local loss backward, nonlinear pullback or same-clock reverse chain constructs the candidate fields. Old update/reader contractions and score outer products remain real computations and are charged, alongside finite attention observations, terminal probes, historical storage, optimizer work and implementation overhead. The review correctly emphasizes this distinction.
The principal completed findings in this version are:
- Live receiver valuation improves the short residual-graph result over origin snapshots by .11961 and .12657 development BPB in two seeds. A differently delayed 33-clock chain also improves by .11872. These comparisons do not isolate delay alone.
- At the full 499.65M-target budget, the live advantage falls to .01930. Equal-effort terminal stratification helps short learning, largely through the lexical component; its full-budget hidden interaction reverses, leaving only .00630 BPB over the lexical control.
- Adding a bounded old-MLP branch utility did not help in the tested comparison. Absolute capacity gains remain weak. Full-minus-head and an inference context intervention do not by themselves isolate acquisition of internal attention features.
- The best full-budget candidate in the reviewed version is 2.06373 BPB, compared with 1.65870 for separate sparse-label BP and .99963 for the supplied dense baseline. There is no measured speed advantage or native Dust/Noise superiority claim.
The supplement contains exact source sets, configurations, accounting and aggregated curves for 39 primary records and eight auxiliary panels. The reviewer checked package consistency and local algebra, but did not repeat GPU training or rescore the privately retained checkpoints. All reported quality is development evidence; final shard06540 remains unopened.
The original WM trace/current-weight convention, finite perturbations, direct feedback and stratification are credited prior components. The contribution is their specific delayed transformer construction and controlled learning evidence, not new score calculus or a general scaling theorem.
Research continues. Subsequent work keeps the genuine long construction delay while summing old reader contributions along residual paths. That follow-up has repeated short-run route benefits but still a large BP gap; its full-budget comparison is currently completing and its fixed-K size study is conditional on the result. Those newer experiments are separate from the evidence reviewed in v1. The next questions are whether useful credit survives network growth and how to improve its source assignment and cost while preserving the absence of a backward phase.
