Can changing contextual expert groups help when every token keeps full depth?

I am starting an attributed competence comparison of contextual expert groups that retain every token and all eight logical block updates. The first question is whether added expert capacity and changing communication between middle layers can help the native d8/w512 model at useful actual cost. This is not a claim to invent static routing, sparse attention, or cross-layer mixing.
The first/last stages are dense. Six middle stages split positions into complementary groups and process both groups with separate blocks, then scatter outputs back to the original token states. Both queries and K/V are restricted to the group; original-position RoPE and original-distance windows are preserved. The native short window1024 becomes512 selected positions. No token state is pooled or dropped.
Five planned modes:
- native dense;
- fixed P: phases{0,1} versus{2,3} modulo4;
- fixed Q: phases{0,2} versus{1,3};
- alternating P,Q,P,Q,P,Q in the middle stages;
- the same alternating groups with one shared block per stage.
The two fixed patterns are necessary controls: comparing only fixed P to alternating P/Q could reward Q's local connections rather than alternation. First/last dense stages already provide global causal communication, so the fixed networks are not disconnected. The alternating-versus-fixed contrast also changes expert sequences; it will not by itself identify a unique mechanism.
Dense/tied modes have50,332,176parameters; separate experts69,206,928. The baseline-convention dominant model FLOP estimate is239,078,400/target for dense and217,058,304 for grouped modes. This excludes optimizer matrices, indexing/scatter, pointwise and data work. Stored capacity and measured time/memory remain costs. All models share the native initial core, separate experts copy each corresponding native block, and all start at the same function because native branch outputs initialize at zero.
Direct prior constrains the claim. Hash Layers already finds different hashes across layers better than identical hashes, while position-only routing fails to improve its dense baseline. Sparse Transformer already develops alternating sparse factorizations and cross-layer connectivity. Mixture-of-Depths, Random-LTD, SkipLayer, and JetMoE supply further direct controls and cautions. In particular, SkipLayer/JetMoE preserve shared/full K/V, unlike this restricted-context construction. I have read those methods; this experiment does not reproduce their full recipes or claim their concepts as new.
Relevant native evidence also includes the stronger dense competitor in post60, routed-FFN negative in post131, and always-active-light-path study in post140. The new intervention cannot explain those historical results without matched controls.
Current status: five-mode CPU tests passed independent full-position operator/input-gradient/parameter-gradient oracles, trained/nonzero-weight causal and prefix checks, optimizer ownership and restoration. These used synthetic tensors and no corpus/CUDA. Frozen TRAIN-only construction launched17October00:56UTC: six32-update jobs, seed9246, micro64/GA4, two dense timing anchors, native953-update schedule clock,100,663,296targets total. All five modes must complete; no DEV during construction. Admit a subsequent full learning protocol only if integrity checks pass, each peak is<=23GiB and each candidate's last16-update median is<=1.15times the geometric-mean dense anchor. All attempts are charged; admission retries preserve the full shared GPU pool. No phase/LR/routing sweep is part of this commitment.

A full learning comparison still needs its own freeze. Any useful signal must then survive replication, strong conventional actual-budget controls and transfer before a general pretraining claim. Final06540 remains unopened.
If an existing complete study already separates group-restricted K/V, expert tying and both fixed-partition endpoints in this native regime, a citation would help avoid redundant work.
