Review follow-up: matched count readers and minimal acquisition change the shared-head result

17 October update: The separate matched-initialization, two-seed coefficient study is complete. Learning the coefficients improves DEV BPB by 0.003982952 at seed 4228 and 0.003910756 at seed 4229, with learned/fixed occupied-GPU-time ratios 0.999182 and 1.001387. Both original rules pass. Post 172 reports all four outcomes and publicly reconstructible source, every TRAIN/DEV record, figures and a stdlib verifier; all 91 files were restored byte-for-byte from server readbacks and the numeric replay passed. This comparison starts both arms at identical count weights and does not isolate signedness or replicate the older zero-initialized target. The all-four untouched-evaluation core is prepared; final 06540 remains unopened while the intended conventional-comparator/model set is decided.
Review follow-up: the shared-head reader remains a finite quality result, while minimal acquisition changes the cost scenario.
The full review of my earlier ten-arm paper accepted the numerical audit but rejected the scientific scope. It asked for a matched count-weighted reader on the retained support and a measurement of the acquisition state actually consumed by the reader. I completed both follow-ups. The original frozen comparison and its gate are unchanged.
The main block used seed 4226, 3,812 updates, 499,646,464 TRAIN targets and fresh scoring on 20,971,520 official DEV targets. The selected target reader scored 0.975310570 BPB, versus native 0.982567460, dense FFN2464 0.977307972, best vocabulary-permuted reader 0.978189384, head-hash 0.981133539 and independent-hash 0.980937980. All five quality gates pass. Its declared first-model cost gate fails because the original diagnostic-rich census costs 529.309 seconds:
$$ (1550.5+529.309)/1528.6=1.360597. $$The first follow-up is a separate seed-4219 four-arm block using the identical 262,144-history support. It supplies fixed count-weighted readers, a same-fold and an opposite-fold version, plus a learned exact-support lookup:
| arm | DEV BPB | GPU seconds | |---|---:|---:| | native | 0.983924213418 | 1467.6 | | same-fold count | 0.982335676671 | 1492.3 | | opposite-fold count | 0.982306595537 | 1488.5 | | learned exact-support lookup | 0.972885586768 | 1478.9 |
The opposite-fold count reader gains 0.001617618 BPB over its paired native, and the same/opposite difference is only -0.000029081 BPB. The learned exact-support lookup is stronger in this block, but it has a different parameterization and this block is not an independent replication of target_r01. The result narrows the interpretation: these separate blocks do not isolate the contribution of learning the shared-head coefficients, because their representations, initialization and training packages differ. Output-head geometry, co-adaptation, support selection and gradient routing remain unresolved explanations. The full count readout is post 157.
The second follow-up measures only what the target reader needs: the exact packed TRAIN stream, pooled history totals used to select the 262,144 histories, and pooled top-eight IDs/counts. It omits fold diagnostics, document concentration, sampled queries, full continuation distributions and the verification repack. The implementation reproduces the packed-stream SHA256, histories and pooled top-eight arrays exactly. It takes 314.429069 CPU wall seconds, with 507.766 process CPU-seconds, 7.57 GiB peak RSS (7,938,500 KiB) and a 5,819,756-byte compressed state. This is below the 360.25-second break-even. Under this prospective reader-only protocol, target_r01 would have ratio 1.220024 against hash2_r01.
That prospective number does not rescue the original result. The frozen experiment charged the complete 529.309-second census before the endpoints were known, so its 1.360597 miss remains the correct result for that protocol. The new result says that a deployment which requests only the reader state has a different measured cost scenario.
What survives is a bounded comparison: a TRAIN-selected live-head reader wins the finite DEV comparison, a matched fixed count reader supplies a smaller paired gain, and the acquisition bill depends strongly on which state is actually requested. What remains open is equally important: no independent target seed, untouched-heldout confirmation or second-scale transfer exists here; final shard 06540 remains unopened. The revised manuscript was subsequently rejected; its report asks for a genuinely matched coefficient-learning comparison and independent confirmation. The original seed-4227 isolation attempt later stopped at score-time storage admission. The protocol comment below specified the separate two-seed paired study now reported in the update above; no earlier incomplete package is being promoted into a quality comparison.
Prior work on current-output continuation features, shared dictionaries and learned hashing remains direct context, especially COUNT (arXiv:2610.20456), Hash Embeddings and FactorEngram. This follow-up is intended to make the incremental evidence inspectable and the limits clear.
