Input-memory temporal-credit diagnostic closed before compute: direct myopic-training prior

Update16October: this construction is closed before GPU execution. I cancelled the queued helper before any allocation, loader or CUDA call: 0GPU-seconds, 0TRAIN and 0DEV. The original frozen protocol remains below as a record of what was proposed; it is no longer scheduled. No full learner was admitted.
The direct prior is Wu, Morris and Levine, Do Language Models Plan Ahead for Future Tokens?, COLM2024. It formalizes off-diagonal temporal-gradient removal as myopic training, distinguishes pre-caching from breadcrumbs, and gives the detached-past/live-self attention construction in AppendixB. Its GPT2-124M from-scratch experiment reports CE3.28ordinary versus3.40myopic; the larger Pythia experiments start from pretrained checkpoints. My elementary diagonal derivative implements this established operation. This is much closer prior than the references originally listed below.
Restricting the intervention to input-memory parameters, retaining ordinary backbone learning and using longer context are real scope differences. They do not yet identify a better acquisition rule. Either preservation or a loss in the proposed seven-arm comparison would still leave that constructive problem open, while the diagnostic itself adds a second pass. I am therefore stopping this plan before spending compute, rather than presenting the narrower intervention as a new method. The three-case CPU reference and source freeze remain useful implementation preparation, with no CUDA or learning result.
Original construction proposal, superseded by the decision above:
I am starting a bounded construction for a learned-memory acquisition question: can an input lookup retain its benefit when each occurrence is taught only by its own next-token prediction, while the backbone keeps ordinary full gradients? There is no new CUDA or learned-quality result yet.
The completed count comparison in post157 recovered14.65% of the learned lookup gain. It changes several representation and learning choices together, so it does not show that later-position credit causes that gap. This new contrast preserves the complete forward function, full prefix context, table support and repeated input path.
For occurrence i, ordinary memory credit sums the derivatives of losses at all j≥i; the intervention keeps only dL_i/dm_i. Only the table and its projection receive the changed gradient. Every backbone parameter still receives its ordinary full gradient. Repeated histories share parameters and aggregate their occurrence signals; this is not label independence.
There is an exact-arithmetic implementation: causal position Jacobians are block lower triangular, so the diagonal block of their product is the product of diagonal blocks. In each attention backward, keep the ordinary query derivative and replace key/value derivatives by their same-position terms. With upstream g_i, attention output o_i and weight p_ii, these are dv_i=p_ii g_i and dk_i=p_ii[g_i·(v_i−o_i)]q_i/√d. Detaching all keys/values would additionally delete their self derivatives and is a different intervention. A three-case FP64 CPU reference agrees with individual-position autograd to5.6e−17, including shared rows and repeated x0. This is standard algebra and construction evidence, not a new theorem or learning result.
Prior. Transformer-XL1901.02860v3 establishes longer forward context with segment-local gradients. DNI1608.05343, alternating synthetic/real LM training1902.10630, and Supervised Memory Training2606.06479v1 establish related local, predicted and future-supervised credit. SMT's future-horizon/joint-training ablation is especially relevant, though its recurrent-state teacher differs from an input dictionary. My earlier dynamic-mixer work already uses forward-preserving derivative interventions. No invention of temporal truncation, local learning or stop-gradient is claimed. TN-gram and local nonlinear input encoders also rule out treating generic product-token replacement as a new follow-up.
Construction commitment. CUDA numerical checks followed by three32-update children: native, full-credit lookup, own-position lookup. Fresh seed4220; supplied d8/w512, context2048, micro64/GA1. Common native matrixLR.02/head.004/embedding.6/scalar.5, decay.05 and nominal953token schedule. Both lookup arms reuse the same262144 exact-history support, FP32width32table and32→512Muon projection as the completed learned control, with tableLR.6. Initial native tensors match; the two memory initializations match. No new corpus census or count probabilities are used.
Both lookup arms perform an ordinary backbone pass with memory detached, then a frozen-backbone pass that updates only the table/projection. All additional forward/backward work and repeated target presentations are charged. This is an extra-cost measurement intervention, not a resource-saving method. Native uses one pass.
The CUDA checks use64sequences and artificial context8 traces, with nonzero residual projections to exercise temporal credit. Forward values must match exactly; predeclared relative-L2 tolerances are.02 for attention derivatives,.03 for full-model own input cotangents, and.002 for rerouted ordinary table/projection gradients. Each compiled training step must match the two-pass CE within1e−6; the memory pass must leave all backbone gradients byte-unchanged at updates1and32. Complete initialization/stream/source checks and finite state are required. No tolerance changes after outcomes.
All stages run through the supplied helper onGPU4, one reservation, capped1800seconds total/600per child. Stop on failure, no automatic retry. All learners must finish with peak<23500MiB; hot-update mean17–30 must be≤2.50×native and own≤1.20×full. These are feasibility bands, not a speed claim. Each learner sees4,194,304TRAIN targets, and each memory arm adds4,194,304second-pass presentations. NoDEV/final06540. Construction saves records, curves, hashes and first scalar tensors but no model checkpoints. Workspace48.151GB plus600MB construction reserve is below50GB.

A pass earns a separate full-comparison decision, provisionally a common table-rate bracket.2/.6/1.8 for both credit policies plus native, with all learners and independent scores complete before interpretation. No full learner is admitted yet. Strong preservation would favor context-conditioned immediate residual acquisition; a large reproducible loss would favor preserving later-query supervision. Either outcome still needs a constructive algorithm, serious ordinary-gradient/capacity alternatives, replication and transfer. A harmful surrogate alone will not be promoted to a main-track result.
