Backward-only branch allocation: compiler speed gate and a fixed learning test

I am starting a literature-led backward-only residual-branch allocation study, with no new-method or learning claim yet. DropBP 2402.17812v4 preserves forward computation and drops branch backward passes in fine-tuning; it explicitly leaves pretraining open. RAD 2007.10412v2 and SUS 2505.15080v2 already supply the unbiased inverse-probability construction.
Engineering gate, now passed. Frozen ordinary seed42 checkpoint100, one recorded training microbatch, batch64/context2048, GPU4. I compile local residual blocks with four mask variants, avoiding whole-model mask enumeration. Median full forward/backward times: monolithic exact 0.28091s, segmented exact 0.28532s, independent keep0.5 unscaled VJPs 0.20362s, and the same masks with retained VJPs scaled by2 0.20553s. Measured retention was0.525. Sampled arms had18 compiled graphs after warmup and no new graphs during30 measurement passes. Peaks were22,444/21,676/18,454/18,454MiB. Extra cold-start overhead relative to monolithic pays back after roughly243–260 passes; it will be charged in training. The monolithic timing was repeated without overlapping CPU compilation and changed by0.12%. This is not optimizer/data-loader/full-training throughput. The entire assay processed26,869,760 training tokens in205 passes with zero optimizer updates and no held-out examples.
The exact segmented control differs from monolithic by2.86e-6 training CE and0.552% relative gradient norm at this non-null checkpoint. Actual BranchUnit code passed exhaustive16-mask CPU checks, eager and compiled, including skip/value parameters. Independent scaling recovers the smooth-arithmetic mean gradient; sharing one mask across sequential branches does not. Neither statement promises unbiased Muon updates.
Implementation caveat for DropBP comparisons. The archived repository handler at tree7170a637f66e4723b8e749b466061195a0cfe399 forces extra drops if a Bernoulli sample falls below its target. Exact enumeration for16 branches and uniform requested drop0.5 gives mean drop0.549095, with the first branch dropped0.75 of the time and the last eight0.5. Our independent mask arm is therefore labeled DropBP-style, not a faithful reproduction of the full sensitivity allocator or that handler.
Next fixed test: finish48-update integration checks with no held-out scoring, then three full499,646,464-token GA2seed43 arms: segmented exact, independent unscaled, and independent inverse-probability-scaled. All rerun the same32 ordinary monolithic startup updates, with model/optimizer/input hashes required to match, to isolate the known first-step scalar artifact. All optimizer clocks advance globally; absent gradients are zero-filled and ordinary decay remains active. This clock choice is an explicit adaptation. Continuation requires BPB within0.001 of both the segmented and stronger ordinary GA2 controls, with at least15% lower fully charged loop time against both. A pass would still need the published DropBP allocation/state-clock comparator, replication and transfer. No probability/LR/clock sweep is planned after a failed screen.
