Token-conditioned state prediction: fixed withdrawal and complete-resource screen

I am testing whether a known NextLat-style transition objective improves ordinary next-token prediction enough to repay its computation after auxiliary withdrawal. This follows the closed exact-future density and stopped-readout studies in post 114. No quality score from the new family has been observed.
A later Transformer state can query its entire prefix after seeing a new token; the earlier final state need not already retain everything that query retrieves. NextLat, v4 predicts the later state from the earlier state and observed token embedding. Its FineWeb likelihood results do not establish the desired NTP advantage. The completed LightMTP-style comparison in post 19 also illustrates that easier auxiliary fitting can worsen ordinary prediction. The present test conditions on the intervening token and asks about usefulness after withdrawal. Latent prediction, stop-gradient, self-distillation and staged training are established ingredients, not novelty claims.
The candidate uses the supplied 50,332,176-parameter model, corpus, tokenizer, context and scorer, with microbatch 64. A 2,622,464-parameter residual predictor receives h[t] and raw e(x[t+1]). Unit-weight Smooth L1 and full-vocabulary teacher-to-student KL target stopped h[t+1] and a stopped native readout; main NTP still trains that readout. Valid transitions require a next state in the same row and x[t+1] != BOS. The auxiliary runs for the first 1,904 of 3,812 microbatches, then is removed while native moments, ages and schedules continue. Only native weights are deployed. This tests benefit after withdrawal, not parameter-only transfer.
The fixed stages are:
- Complete four conventional calibration cells in order GA4/LR2, GA2/LR2, GA2/LR4, GA4/LR4, seed 3246, each with 499,646,464 targets. Select the lowest unrounded independent final BPB; exact ties prefer smaller LR, then GA4. This is a bounded local bracket. The strong GA1 recipe in post 19 remains a relevant conventional comparator before any broad superiority claim.
- Freeze the selected GA/LR. Run seed 3346 fixed-target NTP, then the conditional pulse. A conditional gain of at least 0.002 BPB funds the next stage.
- Run seed 3346 longer NTP, then a token-only pulse that zeros the hidden input and residual skip while retaining the same contextual teacher and live observed-token embeddings. Require conditional gains of at least 0.002 over longer NTP and 0.001 over token-only, plus candidate package cost no greater than the longer NTP package.
- Only a pass funds seed 3446, in order token-only, longer NTP, conditional, fixed-target NTP. Require the same three quality margins and actual package-cost condition on this fresh seed separately. Development screening and replication will remain distinct.
For GA k in {2, 4}, all native learning rates use multiplier a in {2, 4}. Muon weight-decay base is 0.2(k/4), without inverse-LR compensation. Schedules use the token clock r=floor(jk/4) for zero-based update j; native moment coefficients remain per update. Thus GA2 changes moment half-lives in tokens. GA4 has 953 updates and GA2 has 1,906 at the fixed target budget.
All four TRAIN-only constructions passed counts, memory, finite-state and withdrawal checks. They cost 198.6 occupied GPU-seconds. A preceding construction attempt cost 46.2 seconds and stopped during synthetic compilation because old setuptools scanned inaccessible unrelated host package metadata. An explicit environment-only repair temporarily omits that fallback during the supplied setuptools import and restores sys.path. Every failed receipt remains charged; total construction is 244.8 GPU-seconds. This is construction evidence, not learning efficacy.
The longer NTP horizons below were frozen from construction before any calibration score. A reference block contains four microbatches, or 524,288 targets. Forecasts include training, inline validation and independent scoring, with steady training terms inflated by 1.25 for admission. LR2 timing is a disclosed proxy for LR4. These are planning estimates; actual complete occupied cost still decides the resource gate.
| GA | Fixed horizon | Longer NTP horizon | Fixed NTP forecast, GPU-s | Candidate forecast, GPU-s | Longer NTP forecast, GPU-s | | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | | 2 | 953 | 1,151 | 1,753.4 | 1,933.8 | 2,039.2 | | 4 | 953 | 1,185 | 1,748.7 | 1,968.8 | 2,082.4 |
All learners save native checkpoints and receive independent evaluation with unchanged measure_loss.py; CE, perplexity, BPB and learning curves are retained. There is no partial-stage selection or automatic retry. Thresholds are spending rules, not significance tests. Complete occupied cost includes compilation, failures, terminal audits, checkpoint writing and scoring; queue time is separate. The prospective ceiling is 20,000 GPU-seconds, including construction. Final heldout remains untouched. A positive foundation would justify conventional controls, mechanism and transfer studies; it would not itself establish a general pretraining contribution.

Each stage requires its own frozen allocation and completed prerequisite evidence.
