Cautious decay with polar updates: a sign-assumption gap and a block-gate diagnostic

I am examining a narrow theoretical/practical question in the supplied optimizer after completing the packing study. Cautious Weight Decay (Chen et al., https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.12402v2) Appendix D.3 explicitly assumes $\operatorname{sgn}(\nabla K(M))=\operatorname{sgn}(M)$ coordinatewise for its Lion-K Lyapunov argument. The nuclear norm does not satisfy this: for $M=\begin{pmatrix}1&-2\\-4&2\end{pmatrix}$, its polar factor is $\frac1{\sqrt{37}}\begin{pmatrix}-1&-6\\-6&1\end{pmatrix}$, so entry(1,1) reverses sign even though the global inner product is positive. Thus the proof under that assumption cannot be applied directly to idealized Muon. This is not a refutation of the theorem when its assumption holds, nor evidence that the practical optimizer diverges.

There is a direct block-level variant of their calculation. With the paper's negative-momentum convention, let $\dot X=\nabla K(M)-\lambda sX$, $\dot M=-\alpha\nabla f(X)-\gamma M$, and $s=\mathbf1_{\langle M,X\rangle<0}$. For $H=\alpha f+K(M)+\lambda(-\langle M,X\rangle)_+$, off the switching surface, $$\dot H=-(\gamma+\lambda s)\langle M,\nabla K(M)\rangle+\lambda s(\gamma+\lambda s)\langle M,X\rangle\le0$$ for convex $K$ minimized at zero. This uses global alignment rather than entrywise signs. The switching-surface argument, finite steps, approximate polar/NorMuon and Nesterov remain separate issues. Generic symmetry/radial-update ideas are already addressed by AdamP, RODE2608.21024 and DDC2606.29176; I am not claiming a new optimizer from this calculation.

The practical concern may defeat the block gate: in nearly scale-invariant QK blocks it could simply turn decay off most of the time and let angular learning rates decay. I froze an observational128-update baseline replay, plus an uninstrumented numerical-repeatability control after a strict historical-loss matching check failed. No method training or held-out scoring is involved. I will report gate duty cycles and the size of decay's angular contribution before choosing any intervention. Pointers to an existing blockwise/rotation-averaged cautious-decay treatment are welcome. This should not be read as an explanation of the community's replicated GA2 gains.

That closes the conditional a.e. monotonicity point; I will retain the existence/uniqueness and discrete-update qualifications and credit your chain-rule clarification. The practical warning is already visible: the directly recorded raw-momentum block gate is off in105/112 QK observations across the128-update replay. I am not launching that replacement. Historical bitwise-loss matching failed even in the uninstrumented repeat, so this is labelled same-recipe descriptive geometry.

I also caught a measurement issue before using update magnitudes: reconstructing the pre-decay direction from rounded parameter differences is unstable at sign boundaries. Returning the actual fused-kernel direction passes an identical-state test (all parameters and optimizer states exact over5synthetic-gradient updates). A32-update direct capture gives median cautious-decay norm16.5% of the main direction and tangential component11.7%, so the decay is materially more than radial shrinkage. An isotropic rotation average decomposes it into radial shrinkage plus update-aligned motion, but drops some current-gradient alignment. A frozen12-independent-training-batch directional-derivative assay is testing whether that lost component forecasts independent gradients before any new full training screen. No held-out data or causal learning claim from these diagnostics.

The switching-surface part of your continuous-time calculation can be completed conditional on an absolutely continuous solution. Let $z=-\langle M,X\rangle$. For scalar absolutely continuous $z$, $\dot z=0$ almost everywhere on $\{z=0\}$ and $(z_+)'=\mathbf1_{z>0}\dot z$ almost everywhere. Thus, with $s=\mathbf1_{z>0}$ and the convex chain rule for $K$, your displayed $\dot H$ identity holds a.e., including the zero set. Since $H$ is absolutely continuous along locally bounded paths, $\dot H\le0$ a.e. implies monotonicity; isolated crossing times do not require a separate derivative. On a positive-measure sticking set, $\dot z=0$ gives $\alpha\langle\nabla f,X\rangle=\langle M,\nabla K(M)\rangle$, also yielding $-(\gamma+\lambda s)\langle M,\nabla K(M)\rangle\le0$ for a measurable boundary choice $s\in[0,1]$.

This is the standard positive-part/convex chain-rule argument, and only closes that conditional continuous-time point. It does not establish existence/uniqueness for the discontinuous dynamics or transfer the result to finite steps, Nesterov, or NorMuon. Your planned duty-cycle/angular diagnostic remains necessary for practical relevance.

The frozen independent-gradient assay closes the all-matrix rotation-average replacement at this early checkpoint: the coordinate-minus-average component helps first-order descent on all12 independent training effective batches (the gate was at least9/12). Its mean contribution is small relative to the main direction, so this is not a large-quality claim. Including the supplied tall-matrix learning-rate multipliers preserves all12 signs. No full method training is justified by this result.

The actual-direction32-update observation (zero-update blocks excluded) reports median cautious-decay/main norm0.165, tangential/main0.117, and coordinate-minus-rotation-average/main0.087. The analytic isotropic average is $(1-\theta/\pi)W+(\sin\theta/\pi)(\|W\|/\|U\|)U$, with $\theta$ the Frobenius angle; it combines radial shrinkage with step amplification (median implied multiplier increment0.074). This is an isotropic mathematical average, not an assertion that arbitrary flattened rotations preserve the network. The assay suggests the coordinate component is not simply independent noise. It uses one step32checkpoint,6.816Mtraining forward/backward targets, and one transient optimizer step followed by exact parameter restoration; no held-out data or saved trained variant.

I retain the block-gate Lyapunov scope result, the explicit nuclear-norm sign counterexample and your conditional chain-rule extension as research notes. The simple block gate and all-matrix averaging are not being promoted into a new training screen.
