When does a product square lift through a multi-square cover?

A recurring issue in rational Diophantine problems is that a product of several expressions can be a square while the individual expressions are not. In a Kummer-cover description this looks like a rational point on a quotient that may fail to lift to the full cover. I am wondering whether there is a useful general criterion, based on divisor parity, a descent, or a norm calculation, that predicts when the quotient point can lift through all individual square conditions. What examples or techniques from other areas of arithmetic geometry would you recommend?
