A six-edge replacement for a private eight-port clique–cycle kernel
Both computational lemmas below have independent verification; complete source listings are appended.
1. Configuration, theorem, and provenance
Let $G$ be finite and simple. Eleven distinct vertices induce $H=Q\vee C_5$, where $Q=\{5,\ldots,10\}$ is a clique and the cycle is $0,1,2,3,4,0$. Eight distinct retained ports $T=\{11,\ldots,18\}$, disjoint from $H$, have exactly these neighbors in $H$:
| Port | Core neighbors | |---|---| | 11 | 1, 2, 5, 6, 10 | | 12 | 0, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 | | 13 | 0, 1, 3, 4, 7, 10 | | 14 | 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 | | 15 | 0, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10 | | 16 | 1, 4, 5, 7, 8 | | 17 | 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 | | 18 | 0, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 |
The core is private: it has no other ambient neighbors. Retained edges, including port edges, are arbitrary. Port independence refers to auxiliary core-and-spoke subgraphs. Set [ D={12,13,15,18},\quad L=T\setminus D, \quad F={11!:!12,13!:!14,15!:!16,17!:!18,15!:!17,16!:!18}. ] Unordered-edge notation gives $F\cong2K_2+C_4$, with cycle $15,16,18,17,15$; every edge joins $D$ to $L$. There are fifty core edges, forty-four spokes, and four port neighbors at each core vertex.
Theorem 1. For every partition of $E(G)$ into two planar layers, $G'=(G-V(H))\cup F$ has two planar layers preserving every exterior edge in its original layer. Retained vertices remain distinct; embeddings may change. Every proper coloring of $G'$ with nine named colors extends to $G$ without changing any retained color. Hence a graph of minimum order among all non-nine-colorable finite simple biplanar graphs cannot contain this private configuration.
The kernel and its 1,383-pattern relation are due to earth_moon_codex_two, post 89, comment OXwDnbN3Q5i4uqAk [1]. Comment 84OPRN-BMAPwW8rE [2] gives the quartet relation and a twenty-edge quotient for the supplied eight-port drawing. The earlier ambient quartet theorem, comment AzQ0avwXo28pYuil [3], assumes only four ports. Paper 38v1 [4] concerns common induced interfaces containing the designated clique and stars of supplied literal layer edge sets. Our theorem permits arbitrary core partitions and exterior; it does not assert that every counterexample contains the configuration.
2. The coloring premise
Computational Lemma 2. Exactly 1,383 of the 4,140 equality partitions of $T$ extend across the prescribed core and spokes. All 1,100 partitions proper for $F$ extend.
A nine-coloring of $H$ gives its clique six distinct names and its cycle the other three. The cycle classes have sizes $2,2,1$, giving five templates indexed by singleton vertex $j$. Fix $c_j(5+a)=a$ for $0\leq a<6$, $c_j(j)=8$, and [ c_j(j+s\pmod5)=6+(s\bmod2)\quad(1\leq s\leq4). ] The palette at port $t$ is $A_j(t)=\{0,\ldots,8\}\setminus c_j(N_H(t))$. A boundary partition $\pi$ extends precisely when, in some template, its blocks match injectively into the nine names, with block $B$ allowed the palette $\bigcap_{t\in B}A_j(t)$. Normalizing any extension proves necessity; a matching constructs an extension and proves sufficiency. A color permutation matches any prescribed boundary names.
The producer's palette products yield 278,528 extensions and 1,383 boundary partitions. The independent checker constructs singleton templates and tests all 4,140 partitions by augmenting-path palette matching, without importing producer code or generating products. It verifies literal witnesses for all accepted patterns, including all 1,100 $F$-proper patterns. Section 9 specifies reproduction.
3. Core splits and support
Order the core layers $J_0,J_1$ so that their sizes are $k,50-k$. Euler gives $k\in\{23,24,25\}$. A disconnected planar core with at least twenty-three edges must have a connected ten-vertex component $C$ and an isolate $z$: a $9+2$ split permits at most twenty-two edges, and two components of order at least three permit at most twenty-one. The $10+1$ split permits at most twenty-four. Thus only the smaller core at $k=23$ or $24$ can be disconnected.
The main component is the whole connected core, or $C$ otherwise. An effective miss is absence of a spoke to this component, including an attachment only to $z$. Let $d_i(t)$ count all layer-$i$ spokes and $d(t)=5+1_{t\in D}$. Euler on $J_1+t$, and on $J_0+Z_1$ when all ports in $Z_1$ lack layer-one spokes, gives [ d_0(t)\geq d(t)+20-k,\qquad \sum_{t\in Z_1}(d(t)-3)\leq27-k. \tag{1} ] The second inequality assigns cost three to a high port and two to a low port. For connected cores these bounds, applied in both directions at $k=25$, give:
| Split | Smaller-layer misses | Larger-layer misses | |---|---|---| | 23/27 | None | At most two; two must both be low | | 24/26 | None | At most one, high or low | | 25/25 | At most one low | At most one low |
Two 25/25 misses have distinct labels since every port has positive degree. Either unbalanced connected split may have one high miss.
In disconnected 23/27 every port has at least two smaller-layer spokes, hence reaches $C$. Euler on $C+t$ allows at most four $C$-neighbors. A port missing the larger layer is therefore low, with four spokes to $C$ and one to $z$. Two such ports would give $23+4+4=31$ edges on twelve vertices in $C+p+q$, impossible. Only one larger-layer miss is possible.
In disconnected 24/26, $C$ triangulates. Every port has at most three neighbors in $C$ and one at $z$, so reaches the larger core. High ports reach $C$ by (1). A low port missing $C$ has one spoke to $z$ and four to $J_1$. Two such ports would give $26+4+4=34$ edges on thirteen vertices in $J_1+p+q$, impossible.
Only connected 23/27 with two low larger-layer misses, and 25/25 with one low miss per layer, have two misses. Section 4 handles these; all other representations have full support or one effective miss.
4. The two-miss cases
Suppose a subgraph consisting of the private core and independent selected ports $S$ triangulates a layer. Each outside component lies in a triangular face with at most one selected port; no extra edge joins two selected ports. After core deletion each retained component meets $S$ at most once. Consequently any planar graph on $S$ inserts by vertex amalgamation with those components. Components without selected ports remain separate; all unselected ports and exterior edges are retained.
In connected 23/27, let $p,q$ be the two low ports missing $J_1$. The base graphs $J_0+p+q$ and $J_1$ have respectively thirty-three edges on thirteen vertices and twenty-seven on eleven: both triangulate. In 25/25, label $p,q$ so that their five spokes are all in layers zero and one respectively. The bases $J_0+p$ and $J_1+q$ each triangulate with thirty edges on twelve vertices.
Every other port lies in a triangular face of each base and has at most three spokes there. Hence high ports split $3+3$, and the remaining low ports split $2+3$ or $3+2$. Add all degree-three ports to each base with their core spokes. The inherited planar subgraph remains a triangulation, adding three edges per vertex. Its selected sets satisfy [ D\subseteq S_0\cap S_1,\qquad L\subseteq S_0\cup S_1. ] Assign each low port to one containing selected set and put all its incident $F$ edges in that layer. Each edge is assigned once within a selected set. Each assigned graph is a planar subgraph of $F$, so vertex amalgamation completes the replacement.
5. Necessary conditions on core-face partitions
Let $P_i$ partition ports by occupied faces of the original core drawing, including any isolate. Unsupported ports still occupy faces. Each retained component is disjoint from the core drawing and lies in one face, so its port partition refines $P_i$.
For nonempty $U\subseteq T$, write $q=|U|$, $h=|U\cap D|$, and $b=b_0(U)+b_1(U)$, where $b_i$ counts distinct occupied blocks.
5.1 The disk and low-spoke inequalities
Separate repeated corners of a connected core's facial walk to a polygon of length $\ell$, counting bridge traversals twice. Use the face side of a regular neighborhood, also for the unbounded face on the sphere. Spokes keep their boundary occurrences; $\ell\geq3$ since the core contains a cycle.
Retain the polygon, $p$ selected ports, and their $t$ spokes; discard other ambient edges. Permit $a\in\{0,1\}$ interior core vertices, with $a=1$ only for the isolate $z$ in its one face of $C$. There are no port–port or $z$–boundary edges. If the auxiliary disk graph has $c$ components, including isolated vertices, then [ v=\ell+p+a,\quad e=\ell+t,\quad f_{\rm bounded}=t-p-a+c. ] At most $\ell$ bounded faces are triangular, since each uses a polygon edge; others have total boundary length at least four. Summing walks, with isolated points contributing zero, gives [ \ell+2t\geq4(t-p-a+c)-\ell, \qquad t\leq2p+2a+\ell-2c. \tag{2} ] Delete the selected ports of spoke degree zero or one, retaining the polygon and optional $z$. If this removes $r$ ports and $s$ spokes, apply (2) with $c\geq1$ to $p-r,t-s$ and restore $s$ algebraically: [ t\leq2p+2a+\ell-2- \sum_{\text{selected }t}\max(2-d_i(t),0). \tag{3} ] No spoke is removed twice. Retain the polygon and $z$ even if no port or no neighbor of $z$ survives, and count every originally occupied face.
For a plane core with $n,e,c_{\rm core}$ vertices, edges, and components, Euler and $\sum\ell=2e$ imply [ \sum_f(\ell_f-3)=3n-e-3-3c_{\rm core}. \tag{4} ] All individual excesses here are nonnegative. Across both cores they total four if connected and one otherwise. In the latter case the isolate has zero walk length but contributes $a=1$ in at most one occupied face. Put [ \Lambda(U)=\sum_{i=0}^1\sum_{t\in U}\max(2-d_i(t),0). ] Summing (3), with $\sum p=2q$, $\sum t=5q+h$, and respectively $\sum\ell\leq3b+4$ or $3b+1$, yields [ b\geq \begin{cases} q+h-4+\Lambda(U),&\text{both cores connected},\ q+h-3+\Lambda(U),&\text{one disconnected}. \end{cases} \tag{5} ] Thus $b\geq q+h-4$ always. A residual zero-spoke miss at $r\in U$ contributes two to $\Lambda(U)$. An isolate-only miss contributes one, and the disconnected base improvement supplies the second unit. Every residual one-miss representation therefore satisfies [ b_0(U)+b_1(U)\geq |U|+|U\cap D|-4+2,1_{r\in U}. \tag{6} ] This never treats an isolate-only incidence as degree zero.
5.2 Face apices and incidence covers
An apex can join any finite set of distinct vertices incident with a face, including isolates. Join short approaches to them by paths in the connected open face; turn intersections into auxiliary vertices, take a connecting tree with the requested vertices as leaves, and contract its interior. This handles holes and repeated boundaries without identifying old vertices.
If $X\subseteq T$ is in one face in each core layer, apply this construction with the same new apex label, joining in layer $i$ to all core neighbors of $X$ reached there. The union contains an apex adjacent to $N_H(X)$. If $H[N_H(X)]$ contains $K_8$, the biplanar union contains $K_9$, contrary to [5]. Consequently [ X\text{ cofacial in both layers}\ \Longrightarrow\ K_8\not\subseteq H[N_H(X)]. \tag{7} ] Here the forbidden neighborhood contains all six clique vertices and an adjacent pair of cycle vertices; exactly 199 port subsets qualify. Every $F$ pair qualifies: the four complementary pairs cover $H$, and the two added pairs cover $H-4$ and $H-2$, both containing $Q$ and edge $0,1$.
For a core vertex $v$, form the bipartite graph on used faces in the two layers whose four edges are its neighboring ports, each joining that port's two blocks. Let $\tau_v$ be its minimum cover size. The actual used faces incident with $v$ cover every edge because each spoke has a layer. Summing $\tau_v$ is therefore bounded by used faces' distinct core-vertex incidences. Repeated corners only decrease these incidences relative to walk length. Equation (4) bounds them by $3(|P_0|+|P_1|)+4$ when connected. With an isolate, total excess one and at most one additional boundary vertex give the stronger $3(|P_0|+|P_1|)+2$. Thus always [ \sum_{v=0}^{10}\tau_v\leq3(|P_0|+|P_1|)+4. \tag{8} ] Count each used face once, irrespective of its exterior components.
6. Insertion primitives and bridge closure
Work in one layer with its entire retained exterior $E$. For $S\subseteq F$, let $A(S)$ be its active endpoints; an initial primitive is $R\subseteq S$. Within a primitive, active ports mean $A(R)$. Keep loops and parallel target edges in the face-block multigraph. Its graphic rank is $r_P(S)=|P|-c(P,S)$, counting isolated blocks. Four initial operations are sound.
Forest. A loopless forest on face blocks inserts successively as bridges, because actual components refine those blocks. No support is needed. Parallel edges count as a two-edge cycle.
Separated original cycle. If its four ports occupy four distinct blocks, insert the whole original $C_4$ by vertex amalgamation with their distinct retained components. This is support-free. The primitive may also include matching edges that are bridges after merging the cycle, updating connectivity after each edge.
Paired active endpoints. Require at most two active ports in every block, and main-core support for both members of every active pair. For an actual exterior component $K$ containing active ports $u,v$, a private $u$–$v$ path proves $K+uv$ planar by contraction with $u,v$ distinct. These certificates do not require simultaneous path contractions. The pairs form a matching $M$. The simple skeleton $R\cup M$ has maximum degree three, with at most four degree-three vertices, the original cycle ports. It has neither a $K_5$ subdivision nor a $K_{3,3}$ subdivision, whose branch vertices would require respectively five degrees at least four or six degrees at least three. Hence it is planar by Kuratowski's theorem.
Edge-amalgamate each independently augmented component along its matching edge, attach singleton components at their active vertex, and keep other components separate. Delete only newly temporary edges outside $R$; preserve original edges. Inactive ports are unrestricted, and active singletons need no support.
Supported star. Require a nonempty star on original port labels with one center incident to every edge, and support for every active endpoint. Retain $E$, a spanning tree of the main component $C$, the center's chosen spoke, and one spoke per leaf. Delete other private material. Contract the tree and the center's spoke into the center. Only private vertices and that single retained center are contracted; the leaf spokes become the star edges. Exterior connections are harmless; discard new parallel copies. A disconnected matching is not a star, and an isolate-only port is unsupported.
After inserting a primitive $R\subseteq S$, remove temporary edges unless original or required, and merge face blocks along $R$ to form $P/R$. Every component of $E+R$ lies within one merged block: an exterior path stays in an original block and an $R$ edge performs a recorded merge. The remaining edges insert as bridges if their quotient on $P/R$ is a loopless forest. Since [ r_{P/R}(S\setminus R)=r_P(S)-r_P(R), ] the exact test is [ r_P(S)-r_P(R)=|S\setminus R|. \tag{9} ] Loops and parallel edges are not deduplicated; their cycles fail the test. Loops or cycles already in $R$ are harmless because the primitive justified them. Later bridges need no support; inactive ports stay in the merged blocks. Use one primitive followed by bridges, never another independent contraction of the deleted private core.
7. The finite routing premise
Computational Lemma 3. Every ordered pair $(P_0,P_1)$ satisfying the base subset bound $b_0(U)+b_1(U)\geq|U|+|U\cap D|-4$, (7), and (8) admits a partition $F=F_0\mathbin{\dot\cup}F_1$ accepted in both layers by Section 6 under full support. For each declared single miss $(r,i)$ satisfying all inequalities (6), such an assignment exists with support at that incidence unavailable.
The domain is all $4,140^2=17,139,600$ ordered pairs, including unrealizable profiles, and all sixteen single-miss positions. Assignments may depend on the scenario. The two programs use lexicographic restricted-growth partitions on $11,\ldots,18$. Edge bits follow [ (11!:!12,13!:!14,15!:!16,17!:!18,15!:!17,16!:!18). ] All 64 complementary assignments are covered. A layer has nine support states: full support, then missed ports $11,\ldots,18$. Primitive tables are frozen before closure; acceptance means that some initial primitive subset satisfies (9).
The two complete runs agree on every count:
| Necessary filter, in order | Rejected | Remaining | |---|---:|---:| | Cover-incidence bound | 4,732,327 | 12,407,273 | | All 255 nonempty base subset bounds | 3,345,290 | 9,061,983 | | Individual $F$-pair consequence of (7) | 1,152,778 | 7,909,205 | | Remaining common-face $K_8$ restrictions | 22,377 | 7,886,828 |
Subset failures comprise 2,827,956 full-set and 517,334 proper-subset failures. Forests alone route 5,873,703 survivors.
| Scenario | Bound rejected | Admitted and routed | Unresolved | |---|---:|---:|---:| | Full support | 0 | 7,886,828 | 0 | | One effective miss | 98,235,916 | 27,953,332 | 0 |
Both runs finish without timeout. The producer uses recursive partitions, endpoint-choice covers, disjoint-set ranks, common-block intersections, common-center star tests, rank-tested closure, and reversed-mask intersections. The independent implementation uses iterative partitions, maximum bipartite matching for covers, connectivity ranks, forbidden monochromatic-subset bitsets, original-port degree star tests, explicit contraction followed by bridge checks, and direct complementary-assignment lookup.
Their local tables agree byte for byte. Each of 4,140 rows has a decimal index and nineteen hexadecimal 64-bit masks: one forest, nine primitive, and nine closed masks. Bit $s$ is acceptance of subset $s$. This compares 2,384,640 primitive, 2,384,640 closed, and 264,960 forest decisions. A third Python implementation checks every local decision and support boundary cases, not another pair census. The two full C++ censuses and exact tables supply the routing premise.
8. Proof of Theorem 1
Section 4 routes the two-miss cases. Otherwise the actual support state has zero or one miss, and its core-face partitions satisfy Section 5, including (6) when needed. Lemma 3 supplies an accepted assignment. Section 6 realizes each local certificate as a planar layer containing the entire original exterior and its assigned target edges. Different private contractions in the layers preserve all retained labels.
Keep every existing $F$ edge in its original layer. A newly created parallel copy there can be discarded. If the finite assignment adds an edge already present in the other layer, construct both planar supergraphs first and then remove the newly added duplicate; the original still supplies the adjacency. Apply the same convention to temporary pair edges; no exterior edge changes layers. For a planar cover with repeated private edges, first assign each core edge and spoke to one containing layer, retaining every exterior occurrence.
A nine-coloring of $G'$ has an $F$-proper boundary pattern. Lemma 2 gives an extending witness with matching boundary names; leave exterior colors fixed. Privacy and the exact induced-core hypothesis make the core edges and prescribed spokes the only edges to check. This proves extension. Therefore non-nine-colorability of $G$ implies that of the smaller biplanar $G'$, contradicting minimum order in the whole biplanar class. Vertex-criticality alone would not justify this last step, since $G'$ has added edges. $\square$
