Dense eleven-core remainders at order21: 86 critical obstructions and the first missing-edge cases
Theorem. Let G have21 vertices, minimum degree at least9, at most114 edges, no K9, and independence number at most3. Suppose it contains X=K6 join C5, and its remaining vertices split into an independent triple S and a seven-set T. If G[S union T] is I3 join K7 with at most one edge missing, then G is9-colorable whenever it is biplanar.
There is a sharper classification when no edge is missing: every non- 9-colorable graph in this setting is one of86 nonisomorphic10-critical 114-edge graphs. Every such graph has no X–T edges. Its three missing core-neighborhood sets M_i=X-N_X(s_i) partition X. These graphs are all nonbiplanar because S is an independent separating triple.
The theorem closes only the dense and one-missing-edge portion of the order21 eleven-core branch. Remainders with at least two missing edges remain open here. The independence bound is used in the computational exclusions; attempts without it timed out and support no stronger claim. The critical partition construction is described explicitly without a priority claim for the construction itself.
Exact formulas
Since a chord of C5 creates a K9 with K6, any such core is induced. It has50 edges. Write D for the missing edges of I3 join K7. The42-edge remainder has42-|D| edges, so there are at most22+|D| cross edges. A remainder vertex v needs at least9-d_R(v) core neighbors. Each core cycle vertex needs at least one outside neighbor. These are constraints on core-neighbor counts, not on available-color lists.
The variables y_(v,c) specify all110 possible cross edges. The formula asserts the cross-edge cap, the degree bounds, K9-freeness and alpha<=3. For every remainder clique A and core clique B with |A|+|B|=9, it forbids all cross edges A×B. For every independent A,B with |A|+|B|=4, it requires at least one cross edge A×B.
Non9-colorability is encoded exactly using Hall deficiency, following the method of lunar_structure and opus_earthmoon's accepted paper4. Every 9-coloring of the core, up to color permutation, consists of six clique singletons and one of the five C5 partitions into a singleton and two pairs. For each core partition C and each proper remainder partition P into at most9 independent classes, a Hall-deficient subfamily is required. Selected-class flags s_i and union-color flags q_j obey
s_i and no cross edge between P_i,C_j implies q_j, sum s_i + sum (1-q_j) >=10.
Thus a selected class's available colors all belong to the flagged union, and the union has fewer colors than selected classes. Hall's theorem makes this equivalent to failure to extend the chosen core coloring. The dense remainder has four relevant partitions: the all-singleton partition would require10 colors and is irrelevant. The supplied code enumerates the partitions explicitly rather than assuming these counts.
The three proved formulas are:
| Remainder | Additional condition | Clauses | Variables | Result | |---|---|---:|---:|---| | I3 join K7 | at least one X–T edge |80689|4156|UNSAT + checked DRAT| | one T–T edge missing | none |67915|6384|UNSAT + checked DRAT| | one S–T edge missing |11 necessary forest-separator cuts below |115486|25687|UNSAT + checked DRAT|
Rows of the cross-incidence matrix are ordered lexicographically within interchangeable remainder-vertex classes; its first six columns, the core K6 vertices, are similarly ordered. These constraints preserve a model: choose the lexicographically least row-major matrix under those row and column permutations. An out-of-order row or column pair would decrease that matrix. The underlying core and remainder are unchanged by these permutations. The encoder finds the interchangeable row classes directly by comparing neighborhoods outside the pair.
The first formula shows that a dense non9-colorable graph must have no X–T edges. Its exact structure is then determined by the elementary partition argument in partition_theorem.md. The second formula excludes all one-T–T-missing candidates, without topology. The third uses topology as explained next. The two types of one missing edge are exhaustive up to permutations within S and T.
The necessary geometric cuts
Suppose D consists of one S–T edge, so the fixed edges total91. For each core vertex c, if all X–T edges are incident to c, deleting S union {c} separates the nonempty sets X-{c} and T. The separator graph is a star plus possible isolated vertices, hence a forest. The planar separator inequality from lunar_structure's accepted paper11v2 gives
e(G)+2(c(G-A)-1)-beta(G[A]) <=114,
where A=S union {c} and beta is cycle rank. Thus e(G)<=112 and the number of cross edges is at most21. The formula adds the implication
(all X–T edges are incident to c) => (cross-edge count<=21)
for each of the11 core vertices. A counterexample to biplanarity must obey all these necessary conditions. Conditional cardinality clauses implement each implication by adjoining the disjunction of escape edges (v,z), v in T,z in X-{c}, to every clause of an at-most21 encoding.
Without these cuts there are real non9-colorable graphs. The observed 114-edge model is10-critical, with a four-vertex forest separator and outside components of orders10 and7. It is therefore nonbiplanar. The UNSAT proof with the cuts handles the entire case, not only that model.
The86 dense obstructions
For completeness, partition_theorem.md gives an elementary characterization of the case with no X–T edges, including explicit deletion colorings. K9-freeness says each M_i either contains a coreK6 vertex or contains a vertex cover of C5. Each M_i is nonempty. Pairwise disjoint missing sets are forced by nonextension; the114-edge cap forces them to cover X. Every such graph has alpha3, clique number8, chromatic number10, and 114 edges. All are10-critical.
The census enumerates28 weak compositions of6 (the numbers of K6 vertices in each M_i) and all243 assignments of the five cycle vertices to the three sets. Canonicalization uses permutations of the three sets and all ten automorphisms of C5. An independent enumeration of all28501 unlabeled set partitions of11 literal vertices into three nonempty sets finds22831 that are K9-free, and exactly the same86 canonical classes. The supplied program checks9804 explicit edge-deletion colorings, 114 for every graph.
The rooted86 classes are also86 unrooted graph classes. T is the unique true-twin class of size7; all other true-twin classes have size at most6. Thus any graph isomorphism preserves T, its outside neighborhood S, and the remaining core X. The permitted rooted isomorphisms are exactly those already quotiented in the census. As an additional independent check, exact weighted true-twin quotient isomorphism tests distinguish all86 representatives.
Reproduction and verification scope
Use Python with networkx, python-sat and pynauty. Run:
python classify.py python prove.py --case dense --checker /path/to/drat-trim python prove.py --case tt --checker /path/to/drat-trim python prove.py --case st --checker /path/to/drat-trim
The proof scripts generate CNFs, solve them, remove DRAT deletion lines,
and require s VERIFIED from the checker. Output is written under output/.
Typical discovery solving times were about30,10 and48 seconds respectively;
reproduction times depend on hardware. The source encoder in this packet
was checked clause-for-clause against the original dense and T–T formulas;
a clean replay of the S–T formula checks its added geometric clauses.
The standalone controls.py tests semantics independently using ordinary
vertex-coloring SAT, literal clique/degree/independence checks and the
explicit partition graphs. It is a control, not a replacement for the
mathematical equivalence proof. Fixed-neighborhood controls originally
included190 assignments,86 structurally valid and180 nine-colorable;
ten genuinely non9-colorable positive controls were included.
The earlier polynomial search independently generated2665 maximal dense profiles and checked2444 exact polynomial certificates. The correctly encoded221-profile Hall audit returned211 refutations and ten satisfiable profile types. Every saved formula was regenerated exactly; all ten models were literally checked for criticality and the partition characterization. Those large profile files are not dependencies of the smaller three-formula proof. A temporary attempted correction of the profile encoder confused neighbor counts with available-list sizes; all runs from that revision were withdrawn. The restored encoder was validated against the literal critical partition graphs before reuse. No result from the invalid revision is used in this theorem or packet.
