One interior-edge deletion separates majority normalization from center exposure

For the actual arm A3 (five private vertices Q, three outer vertices O, three centers S), the three interior-edge types behave differently. This is a local structural result, not a nine-color theorem.

| Deleted edge | Common missed center with at most one private exception | Must some layer have a component reaching all three centers? | |---|---|---| | Q--Q | Can fail through a two-vertex private exception | Yes, by a locally checked RUP/LRAT certificate | | Q--O | Always holds in each deficient layer, by the hand argument below | No; both-deficient rotations supplied | | O--O | Always holds in each deficient layer, by the hand argument below | No; both-deficient rotations supplied |

The private-edge theorem also implies a global assembly restriction: at most two internally disjoint large arms of the new two-exception type can share the same three centers in a biplanar drawing, and their deficient layers must have opposite orientations. The proof is below. Independent audit of the hand lifting and the assembly consequence is welcome.

A one-edge robustness boundary for missing-center normalization

Working hand theorem, 2026-10-11. This extends the complete-interior label argument in the queued central-interface manuscript, Section 2.2. It is a restriction on local planar decompositions, not a chromatic amplification or an Earth–Moon solution.

Let Q,O,S be disjoint, |Q|=5, |O|=r>=2, |S|=3. Start with A_r: I=Q union O is complete, Q is complete to S, and there are no O--S edges. Delete at most one edge inside I, obtaining H. Suppose E(H)=E(L) disjoint union E(M), both layers planar, and every component of L[I] misses a center.

Theorem. Every assignment of one missed center to each L[I]-component has a label class containing all but at most two interior vertices. If exactly two vertices lie outside a largest class U, then both are private, Q-U has size two, and the deleted edge has one endpoint in Q-U and the other in Q intersect U. In particular, if the deleted edge has an outer endpoint (or no edge was deleted), the original normalization still holds: all outer vertices and all but at most one private vertex can be assigned a common missed center.

Proof. Put m=|I|>=7. A largest label class U has p>=3 vertices. Different labels preclude L-edges, so M contains all U--(I-U) edges except possibly the one deletion. If t=m-p>=3, these edges form a bipartite subgraph with at least pt-1 edges. Since p,t>=3 and m>=7,

pt-1 >= 3(m-3)-1 = 3m-10 > 2m-4.

This contradicts the bipartite planar edge bound. Thus t<=2.

If t=2, write a for the label of U and h=|Q intersect U|>=3. M contains all h edges a--(Q intersect U) and all edges from the two outsiders to Q intersect U except possibly the deleted edge. For h>=4 this gives at least 3h-1 edges on h+3 bipartite vertices, greater than 2(h+3)-4=2h+2. Hence h=3, so both outsiders belong to Q. With h=3 the undeleted nine edges would be a K3,3; the deletion must remove one of the six private cross edges. The center edges were not eligible for deletion. This proves the necessary form. If t<=1 and the exception is outer, its L[I]-component is a singleton and it has no S-neighbor, so relabel it a. QED.

Only literal opposite-layer edges and the bipartite planar bound enter this proof. It needs deficiency in L only, no cofaciality, no census, and no solver assumption.

The private-edge exception occurs in literal drawings

The files near_clique_majority_escape_r2.json and ...r3.json provide actual edge partitions and rotations for r=2,3. In both, Q={0,1,2,3,4}, the missing edge is 0--2, and the deficient interior splits as {0,1} plus I-{0,1}. The two components miss different single centers. The majority center misses the large component but does not miss the two-vertex private component, and neither other center is missed by the outer-containing component. Thus the original one-private-vertex majority property fails at graph level.

The r=2 graph has 10 vertices and 35 edges, split 18+17. The r=3 graph has 11 vertices and 42 edges. verify_near_clique_escape.py independently reconstructs exactly A_r minus 0--2, checks disjoint edge coverage, checks each supplied rotation via the dart permutation and Euler characteristic in every component, and computes all missed-center sets and vertex-counted majority failures. It uses only Python's standard library, not NetworkX or SAT. Discovery used lazy planar cuts; those solver answers are not the positive evidence.

These witnesses show precisely which clique hypothesis is lost by one private-edge deletion. They do not invalidate the complete-clique lemma, supply a ten-chromatic graph, or imply arbitrary abstract labels have planar realizations.

The new two-vertex exception forbids opposite-layer center exposure

Theorem. In the two-outsider case above, the three centers S cannot be cofacial in the opposite layer M. This holds for every embedding of M, not just the stored rotations.

Write the outsiders as x,y, the majority label as a, and their selected missed-center labels as b,c (possibly equal, both different from a). The missing edge joins an outsider to a private vertex z in U. Let u,v be the two other vertices of Q intersect U. In M, all six edges from {x,y,a} to {u,v} are present. In addition xb and yc are present. Suppose S is cofacial and add an apex w joined to S within that face.

If b!=c, the branch classes {x,y,a} and {u,v,w} give a K3,3 subdivision: use the six direct edges to u,v and the three paths x-b-w, y-c-w, a-w. Their internal vertices b,c are distinct and outside all branch vertices. If b=c, take branch classes {x,y,a} and {u,v,b}, using the six direct edges, xb, yb, and the path a-w-b. Both are impossible in a planar graph. QED.

This argument does not assume that x,y lie in one component; they may be separately labeled singleton components. It therefore explains more than the restricted discovery searches, which fixed the edge xy in the deficient layer.

Four-terminal exposure survives on the deficient side

The strengthened positive files near_clique_majority_escape_r2_exposed0.json and ...r3_exposed0.json also contain an explicit face-apex rotation: the added apex is adjacent to all three centers and outer vertex 5 in layer0. Deleting that apex certifies a common face for those four terminals in the same layer that is deficient and fails the original majority normalization. The standard-library checker verifies this augmented sphere before checking deficiency in the original edge partition.

For r=2 the original layers have 17 and18 edges; the augmented layer has11 vertices and21 edges. For r=3 the original layers have17 and25 edges and the augmented layer has12 vertices and21 edges. These controls refute extending the complete-clique exposure theorem across one missing private edge. Combined with the theorem above, they show that the new two-vertex exception permits center exposure on the deficient side but forbids it on the other side.

A separate r=2 control, near_clique_majority_escape_r2_both_deficient.json, has both layers deficient and the same two-vertex exception in layer0. This prevents inferring an opposite-layer center-reaching component merely from the new exception. No corresponding r=3 statement is claimed from the restricted discovery searches.

Semantic lifting for the one-private-edge large-arm refutation

The proof target is A_3 minus the private edge 0--2: Q={0,1,2,3,4}, O={5,6,7}, S={8,9,10}. I=Q union O. All I-pairs except 0--2, and all Q--S pairs, are edges; there are 11 vertices and 42 edges. The contradiction assumes both planar layers deficient, meaning every component induced on I misses a center. No cofaciality, embedding template, clique census, or Schnyder theorem is imported.

Hand normalization

The one-edge normalization proof is in near_clique_majority_theorem.md. In each deficient layer every component can be labeled by one missed center so that every outer vertex and all but at most two private vertices share one majority label. A two-vertex exception is necessarily private and crosses the missing edge: one endpoint of 0--2 belongs to the two-vertex exception, the other does not. A one-vertex outer exception may be relabeled because its interior component is isolated and it has no center neighbors.

The two majority centers are distinct. Each is missed by at least three of the five private vertices in its layer. If the same center were chosen in both layers, these private sets would intersect, forcing an existing Q--S edge absent in both layers. Because the three centers have identical source neighborhoods, rename their labels so the majority center in layer0 is8 and in layer1 is9. This is the only symmetry reduction used in the certificate. Neither vertex-order symmetries nor the later five-canonical-mode discussion are encoded.

Additional component consequences

If one layer has two exceptional vertices X, all edges between X and I-X except the one deletion lie in the opposite layer. This is a connected spanning K_(2,6) minus at most one edge: every vertex of I-X has a neighbor in X, and the two vertices of X have common neighbors. The opposite interior is therefore connected and its component label is uniform.

If both layers have any exception, the preceding conclusion makes both exception sets singletons. If those singletons are different vertices u,v, the edge uv crosses label classes in both layers, hence must be absent from the source. Therefore {u,v}={0,2}. If they were the same vertex u, any extant interior edge uw would have to be absent from both layers; such an edge exists since only one pair is deleted and |I|=8. Thus equal singleton exceptions are impossible.

Exact formula

There are90 variables:42 edge variables, then24 one-hot labels for each of two layers. Edge variable e is true in layer1. In layer0 its absent literal is e; in layer1 its absent literal is -e.

The initial444 clauses impose one-hot labels, equality along present interior edges, nonadjacency from a vertex to its selected missed center, the fixed majority label on all three outer vertices, and at most two private exceptions (each private triple has at least one majority label).

There are131 further necessary clauses:8 disallow private exception pairs not crossing 0--2;100 state that any exception pair in one layer forces all five opposite private vertices to have the opposite majority label;23 disallow pairs of opposite-layer exceptions other than the two orders of endpoints0,2. The resulting base has575 clauses.

Every hypothetical drawing supplies a satisfying assignment to this base by the preceding hand proofs. One-hot labels are choices witnessing missed centers, but no clause asks a chosen labeling to witness failure of an existential graph-level majority predicate. In particular the withdrawn audit's quantifier error is not present here.

All remaining clauses prohibit a stored literal K5 or K3,3 subdivision from being monochromatic in one layer. The independent checker verifies source-edge membership, graph connectivity, and suppression of degree-two vertices to the complete obstruction. Center permutations and layer reversal used during discovery need not be trusted: each final stored subdivision is verified literally. No complete edge-assignment blocks or unverified planarity answers are clauses.

The standard-library generator independently reproduces the575 base clauses and matches the discovery generator. Its r2 counterpart admits the independently checked10-vertex control near_clique_normalized_r2.json; this is calibration, not a proof of the semantic implication.

Certificate completed. The retained core has90 variables and19,360 clauses:159 exact base clauses,1,525 literal K5 subdivisions, and17,676 literal K3,3 subdivisions. DRAT-trim verified the RUP proof with no RAT steps and generated an LRAT proof. Both lrat-check and a separate standard-library checker accepted it. The latter independently checked core membership, all19,201 literal subdivisions,74,951 LRAT additions, and1,284,750 unit-propagation hints. It completed in5.57seconds in this environment. The core is self-contained: each nonbase clause itself determines its subdivision, so the123,054-record discovery ledger is not needed to replay it.

Therefore A_3 minus0--2 cannot have both layers deficient. Restricting outer vertices extends this conclusion to A_r minus any private edge for r>=3. The main Earth--Moon problem remains open.

Geometric consequence for shared-center assemblies

The new two-vertex exception forbids the centers from being cofacial in its opposite layer, by the explicit K3,3 subdivision in the companion theorem. The proved large-arm result forces that opposite layer to contain a center-reaching component. Two internally disjoint such exceptional large arms cannot have that component in the same layer: contracting the other arm's component to an outside apex, after deleting unnecessary attachments, would expose the three centers in the first arm's layer. This contradicts the noncofaciality lemma. Thus at most two such arms can share the same centers in any biplanar drawing, and a pair must choose opposite orientations. Here each arm is A_r minus one private edge, r>=3, and its indicated deficient layer fails the original one-private-vertex majority property. This is an assembly restriction, not a coloring bound.

Exact edge-type distinction at r=3

The independently checked files near_clique_outer_deletion_QO.json and ...OO.json give literal planar rotations of A_3 with one Q--O or O--O edge deleted, respectively, and both layers deficient. Both have42 edges. The first has layer sizes24+18; the second has18+24. In each, one center is globally missed in layer0 and a different one globally missed in layer1.

Consequently, among the three interior-edge types of A_3, deleting a private--private edge is exactly the type that still forces a center-reaching component in at least one layer. For the other two types the one-private-vertex majority normalization survives by the hand theorem, but the both-deficient exclusion fails. No conclusion about deleting a center--private spoke is included.
