When analyzing the cycle numerator $C(a) = \sum_{t=0}^{k-1} 3^{k-1-t} 2^{S_t}$ modulo $D = 2^S - 3^k$ (or modulo primes $p \mid D$), a natural question is whether $C(a) \bmod p$ equidistributes across the valuation simplex as $k \to \infty$. In revising our $\{1, 2\}$-valuation paper, we found that shifting $C(a)$ by the cycle denominator $\mp D$ (corresponding to the rational fixed points $x = +1$ of $(3x+1)/4$ and $x = -1$ of $(3x+1)/2$) collapses $C(a)$ into lower-dimensional homogenized sums that explain why boundary families and primes $p \in \{5, 7\}$ violate equidistribution and yield unconditional cycle exclusions.
1. Dual Fixed-Point Homogenization on the Binary Simplex $\mathcal{A}_{\{1, 2\}}(k, S)$
For $a \in \mathcal{A}_{\{1, 2\}}(k, S)$ with $u = 2k - S$ ones at $0 \le j_1 < \dots < j_u \le k - 1$ and $v = S - k$ twos at $0 \le \ell_1 < \dots < \ell_v \le k - 1$, the prefix sums at these positions are affine in the indices: $S_{j_i} = 2 j_i - i + 1$ and $S_{\ell_m} = \ell_m + m - 1$. Substituting into $C(a) \mp D$ eliminates the complementary valuations completely:
$$ C(a) - (2^S - 3^k) = \sum_{i=1}^u 2^{2 - i} 3^{k - 1 - j_i} 4^{j_i}, \qquad C(a) + (2^S - 3^k) = \sum_{m=1}^v 2^m 3^{k - 1 - \ell_m} 2^{\ell_m}. $$- Near-Boundary Monomial Reduction ($u = 1$ and $v = 1$): For $u = 1$ ($S = 2k - 1$), $C(a) - D = 2 \cdot 3^{k - 1 - j_1} 4^{j_1}$; for $v = 1$ ($S = k + 1$), $C(a) + D = 2 \cdot 3^{k - 1 - \ell_1} 2^{\ell_1}$. Since $\gcd(6, |D|) = 1$, every word in $\mathcal{A}_{\{1, 2\}}(k, 2k - 1)$ and $\mathcal{A}_{\{1, 2\}}(k, k + 1)$ satisfies $\gcd(C(a), |2^S - 3^k|) = 1$ and $N_p(0; k, S) = 0$ for every prime $p \mid D$.
- Dual Pigeonhole-Gap Bounds: Rotating $a$ to place the $1$ after the longest circular gap between ones ($\ge \lceil k/u \rceil$) at $j_1 = 0$ (so $j_u \le k - \lceil k/u \rceil$) defines $H_u^+(a) = \sum_{i=1}^u 2^{u-i} 3^{j_u - j_i} 4^{j_i}$ with $\gcd(C(a), D) = \gcd(H_u^+(a), D)$ and $1 \le H_u^+(a) \le (3^u - 2^u) 2^{S - 2\lceil k/u \rceil + 1}$, which is strictly smaller than $2^S - 3^k$ for all $u \ge 1$ and $k \ge \max(3, u^2 + 2)$.
2. Extension to the Unrestricted Composition Simplex $\mathcal{A}(k, S)$
Combining $\sum_{t=0}^{k-1} 3^{k-1-t} 2^{S_t} (2^{a_t} - 3) = 2^S - 3^k$ with $C(a)$ extends the $x = -1$ homogenization to every unrestricted positive integer composition $a \in \mathcal{A}(k, S)$ (including $a_t \ge 3$). Let $0 \le \ell_1 < \dots < \ell_r \le k - 1$ be the $r = \#\{t : a_t \ge 2\} \le S - k$ indices where $a_{\ell_m} \ge 2$, with cumulative excess $E_m = \sum_{s=1}^m (a_{\ell_s} - 1)$ ($E_0 = 0, E_r = S - k =: v$). Since $S_{\ell_m} = \ell_m + E_{m-1}$, every step with $a_t = 1$ vanishes identically:
$$ \frac{C(a) + (2^S - 3^k)}{2} = \sum_{m=1}^r \left(2^{E_m} - 2^{E_{m-1}}\right) 3^{k - 1 - \ell_m} 2^{\ell_m}. $$- When $r = 1$ ($k - 1$ ones and one step $a_{\ell_1} = S - k + 1$), $C(a) + D = 2(2^{S-k} - 1) 3^{k - 1 - \ell_1} 2^{\ell_1}$, giving $\gcd(C(a), |2^S - 3^k|) = \gcd(2^{S-k} - 1, 3^k - 2^k) \le 2^{S-k} - 1 < 2^S - 3^k$ for all $k \ge 2$.
- Rotating $a$ after the longest circular run of ones (which has length $\ge \lceil k/r \rceil - 1 \ge \lceil k/v \rceil - 1$) yields $H_{r, v}^{\mathrm{unres}}(a) := \sum_{m=1}^r (2^{E_m} - 2^{E_{m-1}}) 3^{\ell_r - \ell_m} 2^{\ell_m}$ with $\gcd(C(a), D) = \gcd(H_{r, v}^{\mathrm{unres}}(a), D)$ and $1 \le H_{r, v}^{\mathrm{unres}}(a) \le (2^{S-k} - 1) 3^{k - \lceil k/r \rceil}$.
3. Mod-$5$ and Mod-$7$ Index-Parity Collapse
Because $3 \equiv -2 \pmod 5$ and $4 \equiv -3 \pmod 7$, the geometric position factors $(2/3)^{\ell_m} \bmod 5$ and $(4/3)^{j_i} \bmod 7$ collapse to $(-1)^{\ell_m}$ and $(-1)^{j_i}$:
- Modulo $5$ ($5 \mid D \iff S - k \equiv 2(k \bmod 2) \pmod 4$): For any unrestricted $a \in \mathcal{A}(k, S)$, $C(a) \equiv 2 \cdot 3^{k-1} \sum_{m=1}^r (2^{E_m} - 2^{E_{m-1}})(-1)^{\ell_m} \pmod 5$. At $S = k + 2$ (odd $k \ge 3$), neither $r = 2$ ($\pm 1 \pm 2 \not\equiv 0 \pmod 5$) nor $r = 1$ ($\pm 3 \not\equiv 0 \pmod 5$) can vanish, so $N_5^{\mathrm{unres}}(0; k, k + 2) = 0$ across the entire unrestricted simplex $\mathcal{A}(k, k + 2)$.
- Modulo $7$ ($7 \mid D \iff 2 \mid k \text{ and } 3 \mid u$): On $\mathcal{A}_{\{1, 2\}}(2m, 4m - 3)$ ($u = 3$), $C(a) \equiv 3^{2m-1}(2(-1)^{j_1} + (-1)^{j_2} + 4(-1)^{j_3}) \pmod 7$, which vanishes if and only if $j_1 \equiv j_2 \equiv j_3 \pmod 2$, giving $N_7(0; 2m, 4m - 3) = 2\binom{m}{3}$ and the non-uniform asymptotic fraction $\lim_{m \to \infty} N_7(0; 2m, 4m - 3)/\binom{2m}{3} = 1/4 \ne 1/7$.
