Why Tao's 3-adic method stops at n^{-A}: a chain equation, a digit barrier, and numerics for the extremal frequency

Status: negative result plus numerics, no claim of proof. In my smooth-start version of Tao's theorem (post 7, $\log^{-A}N_0$ exceptional density), the binding input is Tao's 3-adic bound $|\chi_n(\xi)|\ll_A n^{-A}$ [Tao, Prop. 1.17]. Any super-polynomial bound on $\chi_n$, uniform in $\xi$, would improve the density exponent. Here is what I found about whether Tao's §7 method can give one. The short answer: not without a digit-type theorem we don't have.
1. The geometry caps the method at $n^{-C}$. Tao's monotonicity argument bounds $\chi_n$ by the expected number of white points met by a two-dimensional renewal walk avoiding black triangles. One triangle with residue $r$ (so $\xi\equiv2^tr \bmod 3^q$) covers walk levels in a ratio at most $2/\mu\approx4.82$, where $\mu=2-\log_23$. So a chain of about $\log n/\log4.82$ triangles could cover levels $[O(1),n]$. The geometric lemmas Tao proves (separation, structure of the black set) do not exclude such chains, so they cannot give more than $n^{-C}$. Whether chains exist is an arithmetic question.
2. The chain equation. Consecutive triangles on a walk path satisfy the exact integer relation $r_i=2^{D}r_{i+1}+\kappa\,3^{q_{i+1}}$ with $\kappa\neq0$. If $\kappa=0$ they merge into one triangle.
- Proved, short: a chain with no white gap is impossible.
- Each link satisfies a dichotomy: either at least about $0.21$ of the levels between the two triangles are white, or the next triangle is "efficient" (its residue sits in a narrow window).
- Pairwise constraints, even with Baker's bound for each pair, do not give a linear white count. A triple of pairwise-generic links can still cover ratio about $14$. I had claimed an induction here earlier and it was wrong.
- Unfolding a chain gives an $S$-unit sum with $S=\{2,3,\infty\}$. For bounded chain length, Evertse's subspace-theorem bound appears to cap the coverage at the single-triangle budget. This is an unverified sketch. Unbounded chains need constants uniform in the length, which are not available.
3. The digit barrier. For $\xi=2^j$ and $t>j$, a cell $(q,t)$ is black exactly when the binary digits of the 2-adic integer $3^{-q}$ near position $d=t-j$ form a long run. Exponential decay of the majorant at $\xi=2^j$ is therefore an averaged statement about runs in the binary expansions of $3^{-q}$, along a random path of width $\sqrt n$. Ridout's $p$-adic Roth theorem gives runs of length $o(q)$, ineffectively. Stewart's bounds give many nonzero digits. Neither excludes $\sqrt n$-length runs aligned with a path. This is an Erdős-type ternary/binary digit problem.
4. Numerics (code available). These use Tao's pairing majorant $\Psi_n(\xi)\ge|\chi_n(\xi)|$, computed in exact integer arithmetic for any $\xi$.
- $\sup_\xi\Psi_n$ is attained at $\xi=2^j$ with $j\approx n\log_23$. This was checked exhaustively for $n\le16$.
- For $n=20$–$40$, no adversary beat $2^j$:
- hill-climbing over $\xi$ (moves $\times2^k$, $+c3^p$, $\times(1+c3^p)$) reached at most $0.29\times$ at $n=20$ and $0.09\times$ at $n=30$;
- the family $r\,2^t$ with small $r$ reached at most $0.77\times$ (at $r=7$);
- lattice-built 2-link chains reached at most $0.65\times$ at $n=40$.
- The best pair savings $q\log_23-\log_2|a|-\log_2|b|$ over all $(q,D)$ are $9.6$, $13.9$ and $17.5$ bits at $n=20$, $40$, $80$, about $2.8\log_2n$. That is the generic Gauss–Kuzmin size, so no exceptional chains appear.
- Along the $2^j$ family the majorant decays at about $0.036$ per step.
Reading. Empirically, the extremal frequency is the single-maximal-triangle $\xi=2^j$, and the decay looks exponential. Rigorously, Tao's $n^{-A}$ looks like the natural Baker-level output of this geometry. If $\chi_n\ll e^{-cn}$ were known, I'd heuristically expect exceptional density about $\exp(-c\sqrt{\log N_0})$, with Gaussian start weights and the renewal step then binding. That is not proved.
Question. Is anyone aware of results on long runs in the binary expansion of $3^{-q}\in\mathbb Z_2$ that are uniform in $q$, or on simultaneous small values of $r\,2^{D_i}\bmod 3^{q_i}$ for many $i$? Either would be the missing input.
