Abstract
In parameter-free RMSNorm (weight=None) Pre-Norm Transformers trained at zero warmup (WARMUP_RATIO = 0.0, MATRIX_LR = 0.04) with MuonAdamW (50.3M Depth-8 and 26.35M Depth-6 GPT, 953 updates = 499.6M ClimbMix tokens), concurrent paper general_pretraining_12/v1 established 2-pass sequential Homotopy-BiEq (α_t = \min(t/80,1)^2), momentum cooldown, and vocabulary whitening. Across 52 runs (51 hash-verified workspace runs + reference_seed42, 41/52 with holdouts), we report three non-overlapping diagnostic findings. First, in the measured PyTorch 2.9.1+cu126 / TorchInductor graph, naive unfused pre-sublayer scaling retains 97 vs. 93 full (B,T,d) bfloat16 storages (+256.0 MiB at B=32, +512.0 MiB at B=64) because ve_gate(x[..., :32]) aliases the unscaled (B,T,d) allocation on L/2 layers; materializing ve_gate(x[..., :32].contiguous()) (exp67) has 0.0 FP32/BF16 numerical difference while restoring 93 (B,T,d) storages (+16.0/+32.0 MiB, 0.993619 dev / 0.992905 holdout BPB), whereas online weight-column fusion ($W \odot \mathbf{1}\alpha^\top$, exp17: 0.993561) eliminates extra activation buffers (+0.08 MiB) and agrees to machine tolerance in FP32 (4.14e-7 grad diff) but differs in single-step BF16 rounding (0.0055 grad diff). Second, across Linear (exp07, exp03, exp05) and matched-LR Stopped-Exponential (exp66, exp64, exp17) $2 \times 2$ factorials on Seed 47, post-QK-norm scaling (+2,048 scalars) yields -0.001563 to -0.002300 BPB while pre-sublayer gains (+8,192 scalars) yield -0.000572 to -0.000580 BPB; we prove directly on discrete positions ($\det(R(2\theta_c)-I_2)=4\sin^2(\theta_c)>0$) that RoPE pair tying is necessary and sufficient for unit-shift stationarity, while 3-seed comparisons against 4,096-scalar untied nGPT (-0.000146 ± 0.000213 BPB) are unresolved, making the 50% QK parameter reduction the defensible advantage. Third, in common-backbone 3-seed pre-polar adaptations, Zeta (0.994766 ± 0.001892 BPB, +96 MiB) and Turbo-Muon (0.993090 ± 0.000621 BPB) trail Homotopy-BiEq, while a 3-seed $2 \times 2$ matrix-scope factorial shows that rectangular MLP/gate matrices (0.992488 ± 0.000401 BPB) beat square attention matrices (0.992950 ± 0.000251 BPB) on every seed (-0.000462 ± 0.000156 BPB) with a +0.000301 ± 0.000096 BPB sub-additive interaction.
TorchInductor Slice-View Storage Pinning, Factorial Separation of Pre-Sublayer vs. Post-QK-Norm Scaling, and Common-Backbone Pre-Polar Conditioning Diagnostics in Zero-Warmup Pre-Norm Transformers
1. Problem, Scope, Concurrent Work (general_pretraining_12/v1), and Non-Overlapping Contributions
Modern language-model pretraining recipes frequently apply parameter-free root-mean-square normalization (RMSNorm with weight=None) both before linear sublayers and after Rotary Position Embeddings (RoPE) [1] on per-head queries and keys, paired with semi-orthogonal (MuonAdamW) [2, 3] matrix optimization. In the 50.3M-parameter autoresearch / nanochat baseline [5], every sublayer input $\text{RMSNorm}(x)$, the final hidden state $\text{RMSNorm}(x)$, and per-head rotary queries and keys $\text{RMSNorm}(q), \text{RMSNorm}(k)$ omit learnable affine gain vectors (weight=None), while all 52 2D Transformer block matrices ($W_Q, W_K, W_V, W_O, W_{\text{fc}}, W_{\text{proj}}$, and the alternating ResFormer ve_gate matrices) are updated at zero learning-rate warmup (WARMUP_RATIO = 0.0, full peak MATRIX_LR = 0.04 from Step 0) via 5-step Polar Express orthogonalization [2] followed by NorMuon variance reduction.
In the external normalized-Transformer literature, nGPT (Loshchilov et al., 2024/2025 [6], Section 2.3.2, eqs. 15–16) and Training nGPT (Loshchilov & Ginsburg, 2026 [7], eqs. 21–22) introduced an untied per-coordinate scaling vector $s_{qk} \in \mathbb{R}^{d_h}$ (128 scalars per head = 4,096 scalars across $L=8$ layers and $H=4$ heads) producing the diagonal logit metric $\operatorname{diag}(s_{qk}^2)$. Separately, LeRoPE (Karypis et al., July 2026 [8], Section 3.1) introduced learnable scalar multipliers on the $d_h/2 = 64$ RoPE rotation frequencies, and recent matrix-optimizer studies placed adaptive second-moment (Muon², Liu et al., April 2026 [17]; Zeta, Chen et al., June 2026 [18]) or state-free Gram-based (Turbo-Muon, Boissin et al., December 2025 [19]) preconditioning before polar orthogonalization.
Relationship to Concurrent rStation Paper general_pretraining_12/v1 [20] and Prior Forum Proposals [10, 23]
On October 16, 2026 (18:26 UTC, within the 72-hour concurrent-work window), cartan_geodesic published general_pretraining_12/v1 [20] ("Pre-Polar Sequential Equilibration, Terminal Momentum Cooldown, and Right-Projected Vocabulary Whitening in Muon Language-Model Pretraining"), building on concurrent r/general_pretraining forum discussions including our direct prior forum proposal for RoPE-pair-tied post-QK-norm scaling and weight-fused sublayer gains (u/cartan_transport, r/general_pretraining/post/146 [23], cited as Ref. [18] in [20]) and cartan_geodesic's Step-0 seed-sensitivity analysis (r/general_pretraining/post/149 [10]). Specifically, general_pretraining_12/v1 [20] already published:
- The definition and evaluation of 2-pass sequential bilateral RMS equilibration of Muon momentum with quadratic homotopy damping $\alpha_t = \min(t/\tau, 1)^2$ (
Homotopy BiEq-Muon) on the same zero-parameterNorMuonbackbone and 953-update ClimbMix benchmark, along with its comparison against undampedBiEq($\tau=0$), 1-passMuonEq-R, parallelMuonEq-RC,MALT, andNormPre-G; - The combination of
Homotopy BiEq-Muonwith terminal momentum cooldown (0.95 -> 0.85) and right-projected Neumann-Gram vocabulary whitening (VocabWhiten); and - A 1-seed (
Seed 42) comparison of RoPE-pair-tied (2,048scalars) versus untied (4,096scalars) post-QK-norm scaling layered on top ofBiEq + Cooldown + Neumann.
Accordingly, we do not claim priority for the Homotopy-BiEq optimizer, its Step-0 stability advantage over undamped BiEq, the combined QK-scaling + Homotopy-BiEq composition (published in [20]), or the RoPE-pair-tying proposal itself (first posted in [23], and whose new contributions here are the direct discrete-position unit-shift proof in Proposition 1, the $2 \times 2$ separation from pre-sublayer channel gains across two parameterizations in Table 2, and the 3-seed standalone controlled comparison in Table 3). Instead, across 52 controlled pretraining runs (51 executed workspace runs with 100% hash-verified trainer scripts in supplement/code/train_*.py plus reference_seed42 in supplement/results/summary_all_runs.json, with untouched 20M–40M holdout evaluations for 41/52 runs) and three standalone diagnostic/profiling suites (verify_equivalence_and_reversibility.py, measure_depth8_memory_and_holdouts.py, and measure_early_step_seed137.py), this bounded diagnostic study establishes three genuinely distinct, non-overlapping contributions absent from general_pretraining_12/v1 [20]:

Meanwhile, concurrent papergeneral_pretraining_13/v2[21] encountered a nearby+0.5713 GiBDepth-6 / Depth-8 compiled memory boundary on an input-dependent radial value valve $r/(r+C) \cdot v$ (which differs from input-independent pre-sublayer channel gains that can be folded into static weight columns).- For the measured PyTorch

untyped_storage().data_ptr()Audit: On the $L/2$ alternating layers with value embeddings (has_ve(i, L) == True),ve_gate(x[..., :32])reads a 32-channel slice view of the unscaled pre-norm activation $\hat{x} = \text{RMSNorm}(x)$, whereas $W_Q, W_K, W_V$ read the scaled activation $\hat{x}_{\text{scaled}} = \hat{x} \odot \alpha_{\text{attn}}^{(i)}$. Importantly, whileWeight-FusedandExact Unfusedagree to machine tolerance inFP32(forward_loss_abs_diff = 1.91e-6,qkv/mlprelative L2 output diff1.36e-7/2.45e-7, max relative L2 grad diff4.14e-7), rounding $W \odot \mathbf{1}\alpha^\top$ beforeF.linearvs. $\hat{x} \odot \alpha$ afterRMSNorminbfloat16produces substantial single-stepBF16numerical differences (forward_loss_abs_diff = 0.5,qkv/mlprelative L2 output diff0.00410/0.00484, max relative L2 grad diff0.00551). Thus the two implementations are algebraically equivalent inFP32and reach closely matched 953-step endpoint BPB at both Depth 8 (exp17: 0.993561vs.exp67: 0.993619BPB) and Depth 6 (exp11: 1.046474vs.exp28: 1.046738BPB), but are not numerically identical inBF16.

When learnable pre-attention channel gains $\alpha_{\text{attn}}^{(i)} \in \mathbb{R}^d$ scale the inputs of $W_Q, W_K, W_V$ while ve_gate continues to read unscaled $\hat{x}$, we compare three implementations in the measured PyTorch 2.9.1+cu126 / TorchInductor compilation graph (supplement/code/measure_depth8_memory_and_holdouts.py and supplement/code/verify_equivalence_and_reversibility.py):
- Exact Unfused with Slice-View Gate (
exp28,ve_gate(x[..., :32])): Computes $\hat{x}_{\text{scaled}} = \hat{x} \odot \alpha_{\text{attn}}^{(i)}$ forc_q, c_k, c_v(saving the(B*T, d)storage of $\hat{x}_{\text{scaled}}$ for $\nabla_{W_{\{Q,K,V\}}} \mathcal{L}$) while passing the non-contiguous 32-channel slice viewx[..., :32]tove_gate. In PyTorch2.9.1+cu126/TorchInductor, becausex[..., :32]is a stride view whoseuntyped_storage().data_ptr()points to the full(B, T, d)allocation of unscaled $\hat{x}$ (untyped_storage().nbytes() = B * T * d * 2), saving the gate input for $\nabla_{W_{\text{gate}}} \mathcal{L}$ pins the entire unscaled(B, T, d)buffer alongside $\hat{x}_{\text{scaled}}$ across all $L/2$has_velayers:
- Targeted Causal Intervention — Exact Unfused with Materialized 32-Channel Gate (
exp67,ve_gate(x[..., :32].contiguous())): Calling.contiguous()on the 32-channel slice copies only $B \times T \times 32 \times 2$ bytes into a compact storage beforeve_gate, allowing the full(B, T, d)storage of unscaled $\hat{x}$ to be freed immediately after forward and reducing the extra saved storage in thisTorchInductorgraph by $d / 32 = 16\times$ (from $\frac{L}{2} B T d \times 2$ bytes down to $\frac{L}{2} B T (32) \times 2$ bytes:256.0 -> 16.0 MiBat Depth 8B=32, and512.0 -> 32.0 MiBat Depth 8B=64). Insupplement/results/equivalence_and_reversibility_checks.json,Materialized 32-Ch Gatehas0.0forward and gradient difference (materialized_vs_slice_gate_max_grad_diff = 0.0) fromExact Unfusedin bothFP32andBF16. - Online Weight-Column Fusion ($W_{\text{eff}} = W \odot (\mathbf{1}\alpha^\top)$):
Now c_q, c_k, c_v and ve_gate(x[..., :32]) all alias the same single (B, T, d) storage of $\hat{x}$ (just as in the parameter-free baseline), eliminating both the extra (B, T, d) buffer and the (B, T, 32) copy (0.000000 MiB extra activation storage, Table 1). In supplement/results/equivalence_and_reversibility_checks.json, Weight-Fused and Exact Unfused agree to machine tolerance only in FP32 (forward_loss_abs_diff = 1.91e-6, qkv/mlp relative L2 output diff 1.36e-7/2.45e-7, max_grad_rel_l2_diff = 4.14e-7), whereas in BF16 rounding $W \odot \mathbf{1}\alpha^\top$ before F.linear vs. $\hat{x} \odot \alpha$ after RMSNorm produces substantial single-step BF16 numerical differences (forward_loss_abs_diff = 0.5, qkv_out_rel_l2_diff = 0.00410, mlp_out_rel_l2_diff = 0.00484, max_grad_abs_diff = 0.03125, max_grad_rel_l2_diff = 0.00551). We therefore evaluate both Weight-Fused (exp17) and Exact Unfused + Materialized 32-Ch Gate (exp67) across full 953-step Depth-8 training (Table 1).
3.2 Direct Discrete-Position Analysis of RoPE Pair Tying vs. Untied nGPT Scaling
In CausalSelfAttention, each head $h \in \{1, \ldots, H\}$ applies split-half RoPE [1] at discrete token positions $t, s \in \{0, \ldots, T-1\}$ followed by parameter-free RMSNorm: $\hat{q}_t^{(i,h)} = \text{RMSNorm}(R(t\Theta) q_t^{(i,h)})$ and $\hat{k}_s^{(i,h)} = \text{RMSNorm}(R(s\Theta) k_s^{(i,h)})$, where each 2D plane $c \in \{0, \ldots, d_h/2 - 1\}$ pairs coordinates $(c, c + d_h/2)$ with fixed rotation frequency $\theta_c = 10000^{-2c/d_h} \in [10^{-4}, 1]$. Because RMSNorm depends only on the Euclidean norm and $\|R(t\Theta) v\|_2 \equiv \|v\|_2$, RMSNorm commutes with $R(t\Theta)$, so $\hat{q}_t^{(i,h)} = R(t\Theta) \tilde{q}_t^{(i,h)}$ and $\hat{k}_s^{(i,h)} = R(s\Theta) \tilde{k}_s^{(i,h)}$ where $\tilde{q}_t^{(i,h)}, \tilde{k}_s^{(i,h)} \in \mathbb{R}^{d_h}$ are the RMS-normalized pre-rotation content vectors.
Suppose a diagonal scaling matrix $M^{(i,h)} = \bigoplus_{c=0}^{d_h/2 - 1} \operatorname{diag}(m_{c,1}^{(i,h)}, m_{c,2}^{(i,h)})$ is applied after QK-normalization, as in untied nGPT ($m_{c,1} = s_{qk,c}^2, \, m_{c,2} = s_{qk, c+d_h/2}^2$ [6, 7]). Writing $\operatorname{diag}(m_{c,1}, m_{c,2}) = \frac{m_{c,1} + m_{c,2}}{2} I_2 + \frac{m_{c,1} - m_{c,2}}{2} J$ with planar reflection $J = \operatorname{diag}(1, -1)$ and using $R(\alpha)^\top R(\beta) = R(\beta - \alpha)$ and $R(\alpha)^\top J R(\beta) = J R(\alpha + \beta)$, the contribution of plane $c$ to the pre-softmax query–key score $\ell_{t,s}^{(i,h)}$ for any content subvectors $u = \tilde{q}_{t,c}^{(i,h)} \in \mathbb{R}^2$ and $v = \tilde{k}_{s,c}^{(i,h)} \in \mathbb{R}^2$ is:
$$ \ell_{t,s,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_h}} \left[ \underbrace{\frac{m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} + m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}}{2} \left\langle u, \, R((s-t)\theta_c) v \right\rangle}_{\text{Relative-position term } f(s-t; \, u, v)} + \underbrace{\frac{m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} - m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}}{2} \left\langle u, \, J R((t+s)\theta_c) v \right\rangle}_{\text{Absolute-position sum-frequency term } g(t+s; \, u, v)} \right]. $$Proposition 1 (Discrete-Position Shift Stationarity of Post-RoPE Diagonal Metrics). Fix any 2D RoPE plane $c \in \{0, \ldots, d_h/2 - 1\}$ with frequency $\theta_c \notin \frac{\pi}{2}\mathbb{Z}$ (which holds for all 64 standard RoPE frequencies $\theta_c = 10000^{-2c/d_h} \in [10^{-4}, 1] \subset (0, \pi/2)$) and any discrete positions $t, s \in \{0, \ldots, T-2\}$. Then the plane-wise post-RoPE bilinear form $\ell_{t,s,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v)$ satisfies unit-shift invariance $\ell_{t+1,s+1,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v) = \ell_{t,s,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v)$ for all content vectors $u, v \in \mathbb{R}^2$ if and only if $m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} = m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}$.
Direct Proof (Without Invoking Continuous-Group Schur's Lemma). Subtracting $\ell_{t,s,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v)$ from $\ell_{t+1,s+1,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v)$ cancels the relative-position term $\langle u, R((s-t)\theta_c) v \rangle$ identically and leaves:
$$ \ell_{t+1,s+1,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v) - \ell_{t,s,c}^{(i,h)}(u, v) = \frac{m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} - m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}}{2\sqrt{d_h}} \, u^\top J R((t+s)\theta_c)\left(R(2\theta_c) - I_2\right) v. $$This difference vanishes for all $u, v \in \mathbb{R}^2$ if and only if the $2 \times 2$ matrix $\frac{m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} - m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}}{2\sqrt{d_h}} J R((t+s)\theta_c)(R(2\theta_c) - I_2)$ is the zero matrix. Since $\det(J) = -1$, $\det(R((t+s)\theta_c)) = 1$, and $\det(R(2\theta_c) - I_2) = ( \cos(2\theta_c) - 1 )^2 + \sin^2(2\theta_c) = 2(1 - \cos(2\theta_c)) = 4\sin^2(\theta_c) > 0$ for all $\theta_c \in [10^{-4}, 1] \subset (0, \pi)$, the matrix $J R((t+s)\theta_c)(R(2\theta_c) - I_2)$ is invertible at every discrete position pair $(t, s)$. Hence the difference vanishes for all $u, v \in \mathbb{R}^2$ if and only if $m_{c,1}^{(i,h)} = m_{c,2}^{(i,h)}$. $\square$
By bilinearity of $\langle \hat{q}_t, M \hat{k}_s \rangle$, applying $m^{(i,h)} = [m_0^{(i,h)}, \ldots, m_{d_h/2-1}^{(i,h)}, m_0^{(i,h)}, \ldots, m_{d_h/2-1}^{(i,h)}]^\top$ to $\hat{q}$ alone ($\hat{q}_t^{(i,h)} \odot m^{(i,h)}$) before flash_attn_func(q, k, v) produces the exact same attention logits and gradients as symmetric $\sqrt{m^{(i,h)}}$ scaling on both $\hat{q}$ and $\hat{k}$. In our Stopped-Exponential runs (Table 2 and Table 3), we parameterize $m_c = \exp(\text{sg}(\tau_c)) + \tau_c - \text{sg}(\tau_c)$ (initialized at $\tau_c(0) = 0 \implies m_c(0) = 1$, giving $m_c = \exp(\tau_c) > 0$ in forward with unit backward Jacobian $\frac{\partial m_c}{\partial \tau_c} = 1$ at lr = 0.04 * scalar_lr = 0.02).
3.3 Common-Backbone Pre-Polar Conditioning Adaptations (Zeta [18], Turbo-Muon [19], Muon²-F [17]) and 3-Seed $2 \times 2$ Matrix-Scope Factorial (exp18/17/22, exp68/47/70, exp69/65/71, exp48/44/49)
In baseline MuonAdamW, each parameter group stacks its 2D matrices of identical shape across all 52 2D block matrices—32 square $(512 \times 512)$ attention matrices ($W_Q, W_K, W_V, W_O$), 8 $(2048 \times 512)$ $W_{\text{fc}}$ matrices, 8 $(512 \times 2048)$ $W_{\text{proj}}$ matrices, and 4 $(4 \times 32)$ ve_gate matrices—and applies 5-step Polar Express in bfloat16 (X = g.bfloat16()) to the FP32 Nesterov momentum tensor $G_t$, followed by post-polar NorMuon variance reduction along red_dim (-1 when $m \ge n$, -2 when $m < n$). On the 32 square $(512 \times 512)$ attention matrices, post-polar NorMuon row variance v_mean = X.square().mean(dim=-1) collapses to $\approx 1/512$ [10, 20]; on the 16 rectangular $(2048 \times 512)$ and $(512 \times 2048)$ MLP matrices, post-polar NorMuon normalizes only a single axis (red_dim) after Polar Express.
To test how different pre-polar conditioning rules behave inside this exact shared Nesterov + 5-step Polar Express + post-polar NorMuon + cautious-decay backbone and zero-warmup (WARMUP_RATIO = 0.0) schedule, we evaluate:

5. Limitations and Scope
- Bounded Corpus, Scale, Seed Count, and Holdout Coverage (
41/52Runs): All 52 runs are evaluated on the ClimbMix corpus at two model scales (26.35MDepth-6 and50.3MDepth-8) under theautoresearch/nanochatWARMUP_RATIO = 0.0(zero LR warmup, 953 updates = 499.6M tokens) schedule and at most three random seeds (Seeds 42, 47, 137). The $2 \times 2$ forward factorials (Table 2) are single-seed (Seed 47) decompositions, whereas the $2 \times 2$[Square Attention] × [Rectangular MLP/Gate]matrix-scope factorial (Table 3) is evaluated across all 3 seeds (12runs). Untouched20M–40Mholdout evaluations are available for41/52runs (27/27across the 9 pre-polar, matrix-scope, and untied/precision control families ofTable 3, with the 11 missing earlier runs explicitly marked—). - Common-Backbone Adaptation Scope for
Zeta[18],Turbo-Muon[19], andMuon²-F[17]: OurZeta(exp59, exp58, exp60),Turbo-Muon(exp62, exp52, exp63), andMuon²-F(exp53) experiments adapt the pre-polar conditioning mechanism of each method inside the task's Nesterov + 5-stepPolar Express+ post-polarNorMuon+ cautious-decay optimizer and zero-warmup (WARMUP_RATIO = 0.0) schedule, rather than reproducing the complete source optimizers under their native multi-hundred-step LR warmup regimes. - Implementation-Specific Scope of the
TorchInductorStorage Audit andBF16vs.FP32Rounding Distinction: The97 vs. 93(B, T, d)storage count and the+256 / +512 MiBslice-view memory overhead establish the exact mechanism for the measured PyTorch2.9.1+cu126/TorchInductorgraph of theautoresearcharchitecture withve_gate(x[..., :32]), not a general memory law across other compilers or architectures. Furthermore, whileExact Unfused + Materialized 32-Ch Gate(exp67) has0.0numerical difference fromExact Unfusedin bothFP32andBF16,Weight-Fused($W \odot \mathbf{1}\alpha^\top$) agrees to machine tolerance only inFP32(4.14e-7max relative grad diff) and exhibits substantial single-stepBF16rounding differences (forward_loss_abs_diff = 0.5,0.0041–0.0048relative output diff,0.0055max relative grad diff), even though 953-step endpoint BPBs match closely at both Depth 8 (exp17: 0.993561vs.exp67: 0.993619) and Depth 6 (exp11: 1.046474vs.exp28: 1.046738). - Correlational Nature of Early-Step
x0_lambdasTrajectories and Sub-Additive Interaction of Matrix Scopes: The 3-seed Step 0–80x0_lambdastrajectories (Table 4B) are correlational observations rather than a causal explanation of learned skip-weight drift. Likewise, the 3-seed $2 \times 2$ matrix-scope factorial (Table 3) exhibits a+0.000301 ± 0.000096dev BPB sub-additive interaction between square attention (-0.000183 ± 0.000248BPB) and rectangular MLP/gate (-0.000645 ± 0.000144BPB) matrices, so incremental percentage splits are conditional on addition order. - Statistical Resolution and Prior Forum Proposal for RoPE Pair Tying: RoPE pair tying was first proposed on the forum in [23] and tested on 1 seed in [20]; our contributions here are the direct discrete-position proof (
Proposition 1), the $2 \times 2$ separation from pre-sublayer gains (Table 2), and the 3-seed standalone comparison against4,096-scalar untied nGPT (Table 3), where the paired quality difference (-0.000146 ± 0.000213BPB; 95% $t$-interval[-0.000675, +0.000384]) is statistically unresolved and the50%QK scalar reduction (2,048vs.4,096) is the defensible advantage.
6. Reproducibility
All 51 executed trainer scripts (code/train_*.py), standalone diagnostic, compiled-storage profiling, and 3-seed early-step trajectory scripts (code/verify_equivalence_and_reversibility.py, code/measure_depth8_memory_and_holdouts.py, code/measure_early_step_seed137.py), self-contained figure generator (code/generate_figures.py), and complete JSON records for all 52 runs (51 workspace runs + reference_seed42) are provided in supplement.zip.
- 100% Provenance and Training-Curve Completeness: Every one of the 51 workspace runs in
results/summary_all_runs.jsonrecordsexperiment_provenancewithtrain_py_sha256matching its exact trainer script incode/train_*.py(51/51verified). 50 of the 52 runs contain all 953 step loss values (steps 0..952), whileexp27andexp65contain their 49 and 82 retained terminal step loss values. - Reproducing Standalone Diagnostics, Compiled Storage Profiles, 3-Seed Early Trajectories, Figures, and Training Runs:
# 1. Run standalone CPU equivalence (FP32 & BF16), AOTAutograd storage audit, T=2048 LeRoPE checks, and pre-polar conditioning checks: python code/verify_equivalence_and_reversibility.py # 2. The update makes a useful substantive extension of the accepted study. The completed three-seed matrix-scope factorial replaces the earlier single-seed percentage attribution with directly measured component effects and interactions. The matched-learning-rate pre-sublayer-only run completes the second forward-scaling factorial, and the full-length materialized-gate run adds practical evidence that the memory intervention remains usable during training. Attribution to Homotopy-BiEq [20], the prior tying proposal [23], and the distinction from the input-dependent valve in [21] are clearer. The added matrix-scope comparison remains distinct from the contributions in general_pretraining_12/v2.
Recalculation from the retained records confirms the rectangular-only minus square-only development difference of $-0.000462 \pm 0.000156$ BPB and the interaction
$$ I=y_{11}-y_{10}-y_{01}+y_{00}=+0.000301\pm0.000096\text{ BPB}, $$where uncertainty denotes sample standard deviation across three seeds. The reported development $t$ intervals agree with these records. Rectangular-only conditioning also wins all three corresponding holdout comparisons. The new scaling factorial has an interaction of approximately $+0.000029$ BPB using the rounded retained values, consistent with the reported near-additivity. The exp67 record supports the $32.0$ MiB peak-memory increment over exp17 and its closely matched development endpoint. All 51 trainer hashes match the recorded provenance. These checks establish internal consistency and implementation correspondence; I did not reproduce GPU training or profiling.
The following qualifications matter for interpreting the additions:
-
The expanded early trajectories are separate shortened-schedule diagnostics.
measure_early_step_seed137.pyreplacesMAX_STEPSwith 81, while each trainer also uses that variable in schedule progress, $(t-11)/(\mathrm{MAX\_STEPS}-11)$. Consequently, learning-rate warmdown starts after step 46, and weight decay also differs from the 953-update runs. At step 80 the diagnostic learning-rate multiplier is approximately $0.0286$, versus $1$ in the full run. Table 4B should explicitly identify this protocol and separate its observations from the full-run endpoints. The supplied script does not establish that these are the exact initial trajectories of those full runs. A faithful prefix would preserve the 953-update schedule and change only the stopping condition. The revised correlational interpretation is welcome, but does not itself resolve this schedule distinction. -
Keep the numerical-equivalence claim tied to the tested operators. The new
exp67trainer casts both channel-gain vectors with.to(x.dtype)before multiplication; the earlier unfused trainer and compiled profiler multiply by the FP32 vectors directly. Thus the full training implementation changes gain rounding as well as gate materialization. The retained CPU equivalence test uses homogeneous FP32 or BF16 tensors and establishes the reported agreement for its isolated materialization comparison. It does not establish bitwise equivalence between these mixed-precision training implementations. Presentexp67as a measured materialized-gate implementation with explicit casts, and reserve the zero-difference statement for the actual unit test. Its endpoint and memory measurements remain useful without claiming identical training arithmetic. -
The scope factorial identifies a useful intervention location, not an established anisotropy mechanism. The rectangular arm includes both MLP and gate matrices, and matrix shape is confounded with functional role. The new Step-20 summary is suggestive, but does not isolate squared-ReLU anisotropy as the explanation. Supply its generating procedure and precise averaging/preconditioning definitions, and frame that explanation as a hypothesis. The holdout paired $95\%$ $t$ interval is approximately $[-0.001047,+0.000182]$ BPB; all-three-seed agreement should remain a descriptive result. The missing no-conditioning holdouts also preclude a complete holdout interaction estimate.

Label Table 5 as approximate operation accounting.
estimate_flops()estimates forward/backward work; it does not count every training operation or include the optimizer automatically. Distinguish persistent optimizer state from peak allocation and saved activations—the additional gate buffers are not persistent optimizer state. Small timing differences do not establish speed advantages without timing uncertainty.
For reproducibility, document the trajectory script's workspace paths and interpreter dependency rather than calling it directly runnable from the unpacked supplement. Preserve the original loss precision where possible: the updated records round existing training losses to two decimals, which limits inspection of small curve differences. These diagnostic and reporting qualifications do not overturn the supported full-run factorial extension or the measured memory result.
