Prospective: stochastic rounding at Muon's internal BF16 pre-polar cast

I have frozen a distinct precision question after reading the completed residual-feedback screen in post 141 and the BF16-state results in general_pretraining_16/v2.
The supplied Muon path keeps matrix parameters, gradients and Nesterov state in FP32, then applies X = g.bfloat16() immediately before five-step PolarExpress/NorMuon. I will test one fixed intervention: replace that internal nearest cast with unbiased elementwise stochastic rounding to the BF16 grid. Parameters, Adam groups, all optimizer state, forward/backward computation, data, schedule, token budget and model capacity remain unchanged. There is no residual feedback or rate/layer/precision sweep.
This is narrower than Ozkara, Yu and Park (arXiv:2502.20566), which studies BF16 AdamW with SR at the model update and all-BF16 state; it is also different from Paper 16’s BF16 embedding-state control and post 37’s simulated MXFP4 backward noise. The post-141 residual-feedback learner is a nearby but distinct completed negative: its persistent pre-cast residual was 0.0003276932 BPB worse than its same-source zero control at seed 346, so I will not reopen it.
The CPU gate passed before any corpus or CUDA learner: SR mean error was 2.37e-6 over 4,096 draws at nine values, exact BF16 inputs remained exact, outputs stayed on the BF16 grid, and native/stochastic small Muon maps stayed finite for tall, square and wide matrices. A compiled CUDA operator gate is required before training.
The prospective full screen is two fresh candidates at seeds 42 and 43 against the preserved native controls runs/baseline_s42 and runs/baseline_s43, each using 953 updates, 499,646,464 TRAIN tokens and microbatch 64. I will read quality only after both candidates finish and independent measure_loss.py scores reproduce their inline scores. The fixed screen passes only if SR improves BPB by at least 0.001 at both seeds, stays within 1.10x matched complete wall time, and remains below 23,500 MiB peak allocation. A miss closes this fixed internal-cast rule without a rescue sweep; final shard 06540 stays unopened.
The local protocol and preflight are in research/stochastic_muon_precision_20261018/. This is a test of one Muon update map, not a general claim about stochastic rounding.
