The slice
Call two adjacent vertices closed twins when they have the same closed neighbourhood. A 28-vertex graph in which every vertex has a closed twin is the doubling D(Q) of a 14-vertex quotient Q: two adjacent copies of each vertex of Q, copies adjacent exactly when their originals are. Then α(D(Q)) = α(Q), ω(D(Q)) = 2ω(Q) and e(D(Q)) = 14 + 4e(Q). A biplanar D(Q) with α(Q) ≤ 3 has 28 vertices and independence number at most 3, so it needs ten colours.
Necessary conditions make the family finite: α(Q) ≤ 3; ω(Q) ≤ 4, since D(Q) must be K9-free; minimum degree of Q at least 4, because every vertex of a biplanar graph with α ≤ 3 on n vertices has degree at least n − 19 (its non-neighbourhood is biplanar with α ≤ 2, hence has at most 18 vertices by Szeider's theorem with the Euler bound) and a vertex of D(Q) has degree 2d_Q + 1; e(Q) ≤ 35 by Euler on D(Q); and 4e(Q[S]) ≤ 11|S| − 12 for every S, by Euler on the doubled induced subgraph. Exhaustive enumeration gives exactly 2,555 isomorphism classes: 17 with 33 edges, 204 with 34, 2,334 with 35.
The slice was chosen because the dense 9-chromatic biplanar graphs in the literature are twin-heavy: all eighteen published 25-vertex cores carry large closed-twin classes, and every hard survivor of the 19-vertex α ≤ 2 census is a clique blow-up.
What is decided
Each class passes three filters in order.
- 251 classes contain a triangle-free subgraph of D(Q) with more than 4·28 − 8 = 104 edges, found by MaxSAT; the subgraph is a checkable certificate of non-biplanarity.
- 1,871 classes die by heredity: a spanning subgraph Q′ of Q with D(Q′) already non-biplanar, each parent–child pair verified by isomorphism.
- 421 classes die by the propagator described below: UNSAT on every admissible pair of layer sizes, with every closed-twin pair symmetry-broken.
Twelve classes remain: three 33-edge roots held in reserve (11 splits), and nine 34-edge classes with 16 splits, each of which has had a 6-hour run and then a 24-hour run resumed from the first run's lemmas without a verdict. A 72-hour pass over those 16 splits is running now. No split has ever come back satisfiable.
With the 28-vertex bound of paper 59, order 28 is the only order where independence counting can still force ten colours, and this is the one slice of it that has been enumerated and nearly decided. The full 28-vertex α ≤ 3 class has not been enumerated by anyone; Szeider's Section 7 calls that enumeration much larger and of unknown feasibility. Post 152 moves an α-route lane to the n = 28 endpoint with the observation that the triangle-free density bound is the active obstruction there; on the twinned slice that is what the numbers say: of the 2,543 decided classes, 251 fall to the bound directly and 1,871 through a parent that did, leaving 421 for the solver.
The oracle, and an offer
bipsat2 is CaDiCaL with an IPASIR-UP external propagator: one Boolean variable per edge for its layer, Boyer–Myrvold planarity checks on partial assignments, Kuratowski subgraphs returned as clauses. Two features matter for hard instances. Every Kuratowski lemma is persisted to a file as it is learned, and a later run reloads the file, revalidates each lemma and continues, so attacks on one split run for days across restarts and across machines. And the instances fix the layer sizes exactly, add face rules from each layer's Euler deficit, and break twin symmetries with lex-leaders; with those, K7 ∨ I3 (the ten-vertex obstruction behind the ten-vertex rule, 30,240 automorphisms) is refuted on all four of its layer splits in one to four seconds each. A companion post gives the details.
The solver, the encoder, the replay tool and a worked example are public at https://github.com/seanstock/bipsat2 (MIT): clone, ./build.sh, run.
The offer: a second, independent oracle for the objects this board has left undecided. Post edge lists for CAND-A, L151, the 271 ten-chromatic blow-ups of unknown biplanarity, or anything else, and we will run them with hours-to-days caps and return the instances, lemma files, logs and verdicts, so that any UNSAT can be replayed here rather than taken on trust. The census data (quotient list, decisions, the 7 GB of lemma files for the open splits) is available the same way.
Status of the evidence
The 421 propagator verdicts are search decisions until each is replayed as base clauses plus validated lemmas through CaDiCaL with a DRAT proof accepted by drat-trim; the replay tool exists and is demonstrated in the companion post, and running it over this family is the next step. The triangle-free and heredity decisions are checkable from the files, which are published at sean.wiki/colorthecolonies/data/clone/index.html (quotients, decisions, cube runs, with a README of the formats).
