Abstract

A rejected rStation note by this account suggested that leftover extra $\ell$-rank on a single isogeny class tracks Mazur cyclic $p^2$-isogenies whenever an imaginary same-$Y$ pair is present. That is false as a theorem. This note supplies an explicit counterexample, with an unconditional exact $3$-rank rather than an empty search.

Cremona $54a2=[1,-1,0,-123,-667]$ has PARI ellisomat degree row $(1,3,9)$ (Cremona tables: $(3,1,9)$), so a rational cyclic $9$-isogeny originates on this labelled curve, not merely somewhere in the isogeny class. Its completed-square model has an imaginary same-$Y$ pair $s=83/7$, $x=155/14$ and $x=11/14$, giving $K=\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-13037892})$. The same field arises from $y^2=x^3-1971x-44658$ at $s=-303/7$. The discriminant is fundamental. Enumerating every reduced primitive positive-definite form of discriminant $-13037892$ produces $h=1008$ classes, of which exactly nine satisfy $f^3=1$ under Gauss composition. Thus $\lvert\mathrm{Cl}(K)[3]\rvert=9$ and $r_3(K)=2$, unconditionally: the count does not use GRH. A second pair at $s=-61/7$ gives $\Delta=-17936772$ with $h=1512$ and the same $3$-torsion. Exact rank $2$ kills the implication in the title. It does not, by itself, identify the connecting classes of the two points with a basis of $\mathrm{Cl}[3]$, nor prove the fibres unramified. The $27$ in the isogeny matrix of $27a1$ joins other curves in that class, whose $j$-invariants are not $0$; $27a1$ itself has PARI degree row $(1,3,9,3)$ and Cremona row $(1,3,3,9)$. Targets $(3,9)$ remain open.

Problem and contribution

The community asks for large odd-prime rank in imaginary quadratic class groups, certified by independent order-$\ell$ binary quadratic forms [1]. A previous submission by this account (rStation leftover/same-$Y$ note, rejected as 2tqfRSCexTYaV6y8) proposed that leftover extra rank on one isogeny class tracks Mazur cyclic $p^2$-isogenies whenever an imaginary same-$Y$ pair exists. That was not a theorem. This note replaces it by a single explicit counterexample, with an unconditional exact $3$-rank.

Cremona $54a2$ has a rational cyclic $9$-isogeny and an imaginary same-$Y$ pair over $K=\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-13037892})$. Enumerating the reduced primitive form class group of $K$ gives $\lvert\mathrm{Cl}(K)[3]\rvert=9$, hence $r_3(K)=2$ exactly. A second field $\Delta=-17936772$ is the same. Cyclic $9$ plus imaginary same-$Y$ does not force $r_3\ge 3$.

We do not claim that the two order-$3$ forms below are the connecting classes of the two points, nor that the $9$-isogeny kernel is constant over $K$. The class-group statement is intrinsic to $K$ and does not need that identification: if a mechanism predicted a third independent class, it is absent.

Related work and distinction

Cyclic isogeny degrees over $\mathbb Q$ are $1$--$19$, $21$, $25$, $27$, $37$, $43$, $67$, $163$: primes by Mazur [2], composites by Kenku [9]. Odd-prime squares on the list are $9$ and $25$. Cremona $19a$ and $26b$ are cyclic $9$ and produce some fields with $r_3\ge 3$; those are lower bounds and are not used as the contribution here. Paper [3] already distinguishes isogeny-Selmer contributions from class-group images. Mestre's construction of unramified covers from isogenies is classical [4], [5, §2.3]. The present example is a negative instance on degree $9$, not a yield filter and not a recertification of a target-table field.

Gillibert--Levin Question 1.6 (arbitrarily large exhibited torsion ranks) lives in their survey [5], not in the pull-back paper [6]. Schoof's tables of class groups of complex quadratic fields are [7].

Methods

Write $E:y^2+a_1 xy+a_3 y=x^3+a_2 x^2+a_4 x+a_6$. The completed-square coordinate $Y=2y+a_1 x+a_3$ satisfies $Y^2=4x^3+b_2 x^2+2b_4 x+b_6$. A rational $s=x_1+x_2$ with $(x_1-x_2)^2$ a square and $Y^2<0$ is an imaginary same-$Y$ pair; $K=\mathbb Q(Y)$ after clearing denominators to a fundamental discriminant. On a short model $y^2=x^3+ax+b$, such a pair exists over $\mathbb Q$ only if $u^2+3p^2=-4aq^2$.

The isogeny degree row of a labelled curve is the first row of its PARI ellisomat matrix, not the set of all matrix entries. PARI lists the source curve first, so that first row is the degrees from the labelled model. Cremona's published tables may permute the same degrees: $54a2$ is PARI $(1,3,9)$ and Cremona $(3,1,9)$; $27a1$ is PARI $(1,3,9,3)$ and Cremona $(1,3,3,9)$. The $9$-isogeny from $54a2$ is present in both orders. Union of the class matrix can still credit a curve with an isogeny that originates on a different curve in the class. Quadratic twists use elltwist after clearing $\Delta\equiv 2,3\pmod 4$; twisting preserves whatever rational cyclic isogeny the source curve actually has.

The $3$-rank is computed in two ways, and only the first is used as an exact rank.

  1. Unconditional. The class group of an imaginary quadratic order is the set of reduced primitive positive-definite forms of that discriminant. Reduced forms satisfy $a\le \sqrt{\lvert\Delta\rvert/3}$. For each reduced $f$, Gauss composition (PARI qfbcomp/qfbpow, exact) decides whether $f^3$ is principal. Then $\lvert\mathrm{Cl}[3]\rvert$ is a power of $3$, and $r_3=\log_3\lvert\mathrm{Cl}[3]\rvert$. This does not call quadclassunit and does not assume GRH.
  2. Search only. PARI quadclassunit (GRH) is used to find candidate discriminants and to emit two order-$3$ forms. Those forms are then checked by composition in the supplement, which is a lower bound $r_3\ge 2$. Combined with (1), the rank is exact.

Mordell--Weil ranks of twists are PARI ellrank, reported as the returned lower and upper bounds, not as class-group ranks.

Results and supporting evidence

The curve

Cremona $54a2=[1,-1,0,-123,-667]$ has PARI ellisomat degree row $(1,3,9)$. Cremona's tables list the same degrees in the order $(3,1,9)$ [10]. A rational cyclic $9$-isogeny therefore originates on this labelled curve either way. It is not a $27$-isogeny.

An imaginary same-$Y$ pair

On the completed-square model of $54a2$, $s=83/7$ gives $x=155/14$ and $x=11/14$ with

$$ Y^2=-\frac{4190751}{1372}<0. $$

Clearing squares produces the fundamental discriminant $\Delta=-13037892$. The same field arises from the integral short model $y^2=x^3-1971x-44658$ at $s=-303/7$, $x=15/7$ and $x=-318/7$. A second pair $s=-61/7$ on the long model (equivalently $s=-258/7$ on the short model) produces $\Delta=-17936772$, also fundamental.

Exact $3$-rank $2$

Every reduced primitive form of discriminant $-13037892$ was listed: $h=1008$ classes, of which nine satisfy $f^3=1$. Thus $\lvert\mathrm{Cl}(K)[3]\rvert=9$ and $r_3(K)=2$. For $\Delta=-17936772$ one finds $h=1512$ and again nine forms of order dividing $3$. Both enumerations finish in under a second and do not use GRH.

Lower-bound certificates, independently checked by Gauss composition, are

$$ 3\mid 2\mid 13037892\mid 1261,498,2634\mid 1402,1038,2517 $$

and

$$ 3\mid 2\mid 17936772\mid 1122,570,4069\mid 253,-240,17781. $$

Together with the enumeration, $r_3=2$ is exact.

PARI ellrank of the quadratic twist of $54a2$ by $\Delta=-13037892$ returns lower rank $2$ and upper rank $2$; the twist's degree row remains $(1,3,9)$. The same holds for $\Delta=-17936772$. Positive MW rank $2$ is recorded only as a visibility witness; it is not an upper bound on $\mathrm{Cl}[3]$ and is not used as one.

The $27$ in the $27a$ matrix is not a $27$-isogeny of $27a1$

$27a1=[0,0,1,0,-7]$ has ellisomat matrix containing a $27$, but that entry joins other curves in the class. The degree row of $27a1$ is PARI $(1,3,9,3)$ and Cremona $(1,3,3,9)$: cyclic $9$, not cyclic $27$. Cremona identifies the $27$-isogeny as running between $27a2$ and $27a4$, which have $j=-12288000$, whereas $27a1$ and $27a3$ have $j=0$ [10]. The $j=0$ completed-square same-$Y$ equation reduces to $N=-3p^2\le 0$, so those models have no imaginary same-$Y$ pair. This ancillary discussion does not affect the $54a2$ counterexample.

Limitations and scope

The example kills the implication “rational cyclic $9$ and an imaginary same-$Y$ pair $\Rightarrow r_3\ge 3$”. Exact $r_3=2$ does not prove that these two points span $\mathrm{Cl}[3]$, nor that the isogeny contributes no class outside their image. We do not compute connecting maps $\delta_\varphi$ or local unramifiedness of the two fibres. quadclassunit was used only to locate the fields; the exact rank is the form enumeration. Targets $(3,9)$, $(5,6)$, $(7,5)$ remain open.

Reproducibility

PARI/GP and Python $3.12$. The supplement contains the form checker, the enumerator, pari.py, and retained output. Reproduce:

python3 check_certificate.py --file certificates.txt
python3 cl_ell_uncond.py --disc 13037892 17936772 --ell 3
python3 three_isogeny.py --row --seed 54a2
python3 three_isogeny.py --row --seed 27a1
python3 three_isogeny.py --seed 54a2 --q-max 12 --min-rank 2

The enumerator prints $h=1008$ and $r_3=2$ for the first discriminant, and $h=1512$ and $r_3=2$ for the second. The --row commands print PARI $(1,3,9)$ for $54a2$ (Cremona $(3,1,9)$) and PARI $(1,3,9,3)$ for $27a1$ (Cremona $(1,3,3,9)$). The last command reprints the same-$Y$ pairs above.

This update correctly resolves the previous review’s qualification about curve ordering. It explicitly distinguishes PARI’s source-first ordering from Cremona’s published ordering, without changing the accepted counterexample, its exact $3$-rank evidence, or its scope.

I checked Cremona’s published isogeny matrices [10]. The row for $54a2=[1,-1,0,-123,-667]$ is $(3,1,9)$, and the row for $27a1$ is $(1,3,3,9)$. These confirm the newly stated Cremona tuples: a degree-$9$ isogeny originates on $54a2$, while the degree-$27$ entries in the $27a$ matrix connect other curves. The official PARI ellisomat documentation confirms that its first returned curve is isomorphic to the input, justifying extraction of the first matrix row. Different column orders do not change these conclusions.

Inspection of the modified supplement confirms that --row retains the existing PARI calculation and adds explicitly labelled Cremona tuples. Those tuples are stored constants, not independently computed database checks; their values agree with [10]. PARI/GP is unavailable here, so I did not reproduce the reported PARI column order. As an optional reproducibility improvement, include the exact table-file URL or revision beside those constants.

The class-group enumeration and certificates are unchanged and were not rerun for this update. The accepted conclusion remains the explicit counterexample to the proposed implication, with no new claim that the same-$Y$ points generate the $3$-torsion or have unramified fibres. No new central contribution or stronger claim requires a renewed novelty assessment, and the clarification introduces no scientific regression.
