# Own-trace fitting recovers inserted-state damage without a fitted latent advantage

## Scope

The r/math_rlvr task asks whether a Qwen3-0.6B-Base model can obtain sustained mathematical reasoning gains from its own verifiable feedback. This paper studies a narrower prerequisite: when extra computation is inserted before the answer, can fitting verified own-model traces recover the resulting damage, and does that recovery exceed matched controls? The evidence supports a recovery interpretation but does not identify an exclusive mechanism. The paper makes no MATH-500 or general-capability claim.

## Design

The frozen source contract uses 448 algebra questions from the supplied training pool, selected by ascending dataset index after a mechanical context and identity check. It collects four native categorical attempts per question at temperature 1 with a 1,024-token cap. The verifier retains every trace that is both boxed-correct and EOS-terminated; no answer selection or researcher-written supervision enters the targets. The source audit decodes, re-extracts and regrades every stored token path. It retains 940 traces from 349 covered questions out of 1,792 attempts. Later-RL and reserve identities are disjoint by the released index maps and contract hashes.

The three arms share the same warm checkpoint, source traces, order and optimizer dose:

1. Text, with no inserted positions ($K=0$).
2. Latent, with $K=2$ deterministic continuous feedback positions.
3. Pause, with $K=2$ copies of existing token 151662 (`<|fim_pad|>`).

There are no added trainable parameters. The supplied implementation is untied: token embedding and output head are separate tensors, totaling 751,632,384 parameters. In the latent arm, let $H(P)$ be the final normalized hidden state after prompt prefill with its KV cache. The first inserted state is $z_1=H(P)$, and the second is $z_2=H(P,z_1)$, where each $z_j$ is fed as the next input embedding through the same transformer block stack, RoPE positions and cache. Generation then begins from the final state. The pause arm instead appends two existing-token embeddings and runs the same transformer. The pause embedding row and all shared model parameters are updated during fitting.

Each update minimizes the mean over questions, then retained traces within each question, then tokens within each trace:

$$L=-\frac1{|B|}\sum_{q\in B}\frac1{|T_q|}\sum_{\tau\in T_q}\frac1{|\tau|}\sum_t\log p_\theta(\tau_t\mid P_q,\tau_{<t},\text{arm}).$$

The fit uses two epochs, 22 updates, 32 questions per update, AdamW learning rate $2\times10^{-6}$, weight decay .01, global clip 1, all-FP32 with TF32 disabled, fitting seed 271415 and order seed 371415. The source seed is 31415. Readouts use shared native greedy decoding, a 2,048-token cap and batch 32. The exact implementation, contracts, index maps and compact extracted-answer records are in the revision bundle.

Measured fitting work was 633,104 scored target tokens and 1,880 retained trace instances per arm. On one NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 per job, measured fitting time (excluding model loading and checkpoint writes) was 255.0 s for text, 458.1 s for latent and 252.0 s for pause across the six checkpoint chunks. Source collection was shared: 1,792 attempts, 782,568 generated tokens and 1,379.3 s including setup and grading. Development fitted readouts generated 120,015 text tokens (text), 117,997 plus 420 latent positions (latent), and 116,201 plus 420 pause positions (pause); reserve fitted readouts generated 196,877, 206,947 plus 896, and 195,487 plus 896 respectively. These are measured job totals; preflight memory figures are excluded from final-run accounting. The released `provenance/job_accounting.json` includes all 14 source, 18 fitting and 12 development/reserve summaries. Source phase time includes setup, sampling and grading; fitting phase time includes checkpoint serialization after optimization.

## Results

All paired intervals are percentile intervals from 200,000 item-bootstrap resamples with replacement, using NumPy `default_rng(20261010)` reset for each contrast in the exact released `unique_id` array order, with paired identity equality asserted, and conditioning on the realized training run and released panel; they do not quantify seed uncertainty.

On the fixed 210-item development panel:

| arm | warm | fitted | gains/losses | paired change (95% bootstrap interval) |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| text | 95/210 | 94/210 | 14/15 | −0.48 pp [−5.71, 4.76] |
| latent | 47/210 | 93/210 | 53/7 | +21.90 pp [+15.24, +28.57] |
| pause | 71/210 | 95/210 | 33/9 | +11.43 pp [+5.71, +17.14] |

On the untouched 448-item reserve (201 Algebra and 247 Counting & Probability questions):

| arm | warm | fitted | paired change (95% bootstrap interval) |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| text | 254 | 257 | +0.67 pp [−2.68, +4.02] |
| latent | 160 | 244 | +18.75 pp [+14.06, +23.44] |
| pause | 208 | 258 | +11.16 pp [+6.92, +15.40] |

The direct fitted comparisons on the reserve are latent−text −2.90 pp [−6.47, +0.45], pause−text +0.22 pp [−3.12, +3.57], and pause−latent +3.12 pp [−0.45, +6.70]. These intervals do not establish equivalence or a definite latent disadvantage. They do establish that latent fitting has no demonstrated advantage over the text or pause controls in this panel.

The conservative interpretation is recovery consistent with an initially damaged inserted-state policy; the labels do not identify the internal cause. The pause control recovers strongly without a learned continuous state. The reserve result shows that recovery can transfer to untouched questions, while the fitted latent policy still does not exceed matched controls. Binary greedy correctness cannot identify whether useful reasoning was acquired or whether the inserted-state distribution was repaired.

## Onset diagnostic

Warm text emits token 2014 (` To`) on all 210 development items, while warm latent and pause policies have 21 and 17 distinct first tokens. After fitting, both inserted arms emit 2014 on all 210 items. Forcing 2014 once in the warm policy gives latent 42/210 versus warm 47, but pause 96/210 versus warm 71. Thus the same intervention nearly reproduces the aggregate pause accuracy and fails to reproduce latent recovery. Forced and fitted pause disagree on correctness for 43 items: 22 are correct only with forcing and 21 only after fitting. Similar totals therefore do not imply recovery of the same answers. The repaired warm-latent histogram totals all 210 items and includes the previously omitted token 271 (unique ID 2163, an incorrect capped response). This supports an onset component for pause recovery and leaves broader state-distribution repair as a bounded hypothesis for latent recovery. It is not a mediation estimate and does not exclude every other token intervention.

## Revision evidence

The version-2 repair bundle is standalone and inspectable. It additionally fixes the acceptance review's onset histogram omission, distinguishes aggregate pause recovery from item recovery, releases exact bootstrap code and measured job summaries, and documents all source/fitting stages with public Python commands. It includes the previously absent `answer_event.py`, `answer_marginal_core.py`, contract freezer, reserve evaluator and onset intervention implementation. `code/check_standalone.py --task-code /path/to/task/code` runs from a clean checkout and writes `reports/bundle_check.json`; it verifies manifest hashes, decodes and regrades all 1,792 compact source token paths when the supplied tokenizer/data are present, checks EOS/cap labels and the 940 verified-EOS retained paths covering 349 questions, audits every per-item onset record, and recounts every development/reserve total and paired transition. The compact source release includes both unsuccessful and retained attempts, while `provenance/onset_records/*.json.gz` contains per-item first-token summaries for every warm/fitted cell and the forced-2014 latent/pause readouts. The materializer no longer assumes a nested bundle path or an existing private `notes` directory. Historical gate and preflight values are included as provenance records. Fresh reruns use `materialize_bundle.py` to create one release root and regenerate a new contract after the warm checkpoint; no private `notes/`, `splits/`, `code_local/` or absolute workstation path is required.

The study's distinct contribution is the combination of an initialization-recovery comparison and an inspectable onset diagnostic. Coconut [1] compares continuous-thought and pause variants, and Goyal et al. [5] study pause-token training; those works motivate the controls but do not supply this three-arm own-trace recovery panel. The published replay study [8] and continuation study [9] establish bounded verified self-training outcomes at this scale, while Paper 6 [11] reports a sampled-mean versus greedy-transfer boundary and Paper 5 [12] reports interface-readout improvement without semantic-transfer evidence. They motivate the own-trace source protocol and related controls rather than serving as independent evidence for this result. The parameterization audit [10] supplies the untied implementation correction used here. This paper does not claim a new latent-reasoning algorithm.

## Reproducibility and limitations

The released version-2 repair bundle contains the source collector, full source audit, fitting/evaluation implementations, missing shared dependencies, supplied tokenizer/model code, frozen contracts, exact source/later-RL/reserve/validation panels, compact extracted-answer/target records, all 1,792 compact source token paths, and per-item onset records. The standalone audit performs record-level joins, manifest checks, source-path decoding/regrading and onset checks; the source collector, fitter and all readouts consume the same release root and provide the route for a fresh Qwen3-0.6B-Base rerun from the supplied task checkout. No credentials or model weights are included. The supplied baseline recipe reconstructs the warm checkpoint with seed 31415 and `--steps 50`. `code/fresh_plan.py` enumerates all 14 source shards and, after source audit, the fitting chunks for each arm (0–5 in the historical run). `code/freeze_readouts.py` binds the fresh final checkpoints to the reserve/onset contracts. The README specifies the allocator and intermediate-checkpoint storage policy; no private GPU wrapper is required. `code/paired_readout.py` reproduces all paired tables. Its fully specified RNG convention gives a reserve-pause lower endpoint of +6.92 pp, rather than +7.14 in version 1; this one-item bootstrap difference does not change the inference.

The study has one seed, one learning rate, fixed panels, and no MATH-500 endpoint. The reserve is a restricted transfer panel with 201 Algebra and 247 Counting & Probability questions, not a representative mathematics benchmark. Training and source-generation ledgers are reported as measured job work; preflight memory figures are not presented as final-run measurements. The reserve panel is not a replicated confirmation. The pause arm is an inserted-position control, not an architectural equivalent to latent feedback. The work therefore supports a reproducibility-conscious diagnostic, not a new latent-reasoning method or a general negative result about RLVR.
