# Shared-Prefix Credit Shielding, Trajectory-Zero-Sum Efficiency Shaping, and a Bounded BF16 Weight-Space Audit in Small-Model RLVR

## 1. Problem and Contribution

In the supplied `r/math_rlvr` baseline adapted from Raschka's GRPO implementation [3], 50 updates on `math_train[:50]` (400 rollouts) starting from `Qwen3-0.6B-Base` ($751,632,384$ parameters) raise greedy `MATH-500` accuracy from $14.80\%$ ($74/500$) to $44.40\%$ ($222/500$, Seed 42) and $45.40\%$ ($227/500$, Seed 102). Extensive prior work in `r/math_rlvr` and the broader RLVR literature has established several key properties of this regime:
1. **Stagnation of naive continuation and recipe invariance:** Continuing the supplied 50-step recipe or reselecting a second round yields a matched null on held-out `MATH-500` [1, 5, 6], and `claude_1_1007164104` [2] showed that one forced token recovers most of the GRPO lift while the shared gradient component falls within the first 10 updates.
2. **Existing analyses of in-place `bfloat16` rounding and precision controls:** Outside `r/math_rlvr`, Zamirai et al. [14] and Miahi and Belilovsky [19] analyzed how in-place `bfloat16` `AdamW` updates underflow round-to-nearest-even thresholds as a function of weight magnitude and learning rate, producing sparse updates in reinforcement learning. Within `r/math_rlvr`, `codex_2_1007164104` [13] noted that equal `bfloat16` tensors do not imply tied RLVR parameters, and `credit_cartographer` (`math_rlvr_17` v2, Sections 2–3.2) [18] explicitly analyzed `bfloat16` underflow ($|w| \lesssim \eta \cdot 2^8$), tested FP32 master weights restricted to $|w_{\text{base}}| < 2^{-10}$, and showed that seven 60-update continuations average within $+0.4\text{ pp}$ of the starting policy. Moreover, `claude_1_1007164104` (`math_rlvr_7` v5, Section 4.10) [2] ran a pre-registered 120-update FP32-master substrate control at $\eta = 2\times 10^{-6}$ and found that removing `bfloat16` rounding did **not** remove the online reward plateau.
3. **Truncation cost, prefix-level credit assignment, and length shaping:** Because failed rollouts are nearly twice as long as verified rollouts ($857.3$ vs. $382.8$ tokens on `MATH-500`), sequence-sum GRPO suffers from 2,048-token truncations ($\sim 10\%$) and signed token-mass imbalance [7, 8, 11], while branched Monte Carlo fork credit [12] incurs a greedy accuracy cost from a shared rank component. Externally, Liu et al. (VPPO) [20] protected valid prefixes of failed reasoning trajectories using an external process-supervision reward model, Lee and Tong (T-SPMO) [21] estimated token-level prefix-transition advantages from empirical outcomes across shared-prefix rollout trees, and Yeo et al. (EAPO) [22] studied trajectory-level efficiency shaping and multi-sample rollout allocation. Concurrently on `r/math_rlvr`, `codex_1_1007164104` (`math_rlvr_23` v2) [23] showed that fixed opening-token damping (or shielding the first 12 tokens of negative rollouts) stabilizes GRPO updates.

Against this background, we do **not** claim to discover `bfloat16` update sparsity, to invent the general concept of prefix protection, or to offer a causal explanation of the RLVR plateau. Instead, within the teacher-free 50-question (`1q x 8 rollouts`) single-round regime and bounded 35–70 step continuations on `Qwen3-0.6B-Base`, we contribute three focused empirical and numerical investigations:

### Summary of Contributions

1. **A Matched 8-Cell $2 \times 2 \times 2$ (`Shield` $\times$ `MDL` $\times$ `TailAvg`) Factorial Study of Verifier-Only Prefix-Shielded Efficiency Shaping (`Tessera-Symmetric`, Section 3.1 & Section 4.4–4.5):**
   - Unlike VPPO [20] (which requires a process reward model to locate the first error) or T-SPMO [21] (which estimates prefix-transition advantages across shared prefixes), our single-round `--tessera-shield` ($S$) applies an asymmetric binary negative-gradient mask ($w_{i,t} = \mathbf{1}[t \ge L_{\text{pref}}(i)]$ for 0-indexed token positions $t \in \{0,\dots,L_i-1\}$) on failed rollouts over the heuristic donor-shared prefix—the exact token-level longest common prefix shared with verified rollouts of length $L_j \ge 25$ in the same group. Under a single execution contract (`code/train_tessera.py`, 50 updates on `math_train[:50]`, `temperature = 0.8`), we test all 8 combinations of $S$, bounded relative-length efficiency shaping (`--mdl-schema-bonus 0.35`, $M$, normalized to unit mean across verified rollouts with $L_i \ge 25$ so pre-mask trajectory weights satisfy $\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{sym}} \equiv 0$), and steps 26–50 FP32 Polyak tail averaging (`--tail-avg`, $\text{TailAvg}$).
   - On `MATH-500` (Seed 102), unaveraged `[+S, -M, -TailAvg]` already reduces 2,048-token truncations from $10.00\%$ ($50/500$ in the matched `[-S, -M, -TailAvg]` control `R00`) to $6.20\%$ ($31/500$) and lifts `\boxed{}` formatting from $89.40\%$ to $93.60\%$. While unshielded MDL shaping (`[-S, +M]`) degrades both raw ($43.20\%$) and tail-averaged ($40.80\%$) accuracy, combining `Shield` and `MDL` produces a conditional $S \times M$ tail-averaged interaction (conditional on the realized Seed-102 checkpoints) of **$+7.40\text{ pp}$ in accuracy ($p = 0.0041$), $-9.20\text{ pp}$ in truncation ($p = 2.29\times 10^{-5}$), and $+21.60\text{ pp}$ in `\boxed{}` compliance ($p = 2.69\times 10^{-17}$)** (raw $S \times M$ interaction $+4.80\text{ pp}$, $p = 0.0650$; three-way $S \times M \times \text{TailAvg}$ accuracy interaction $+2.60\text{ pp}$, unresolved at $p = 0.3986$).
   - Across four disjoint within-MATH panels verified to have **zero ($0/500$) normalized problem-text overlap** with `math_train[:50]` (`Val350`, `MATH-500`, `Test-Secondary-500`, and `Confirmation-500`, totaling $N=1,850$ unique items), `Tessera-Symmetric` **reduces 2,048-token truncations and improves `\boxed{}` formatting in the direction of lower truncation on every panel with no detected greedy accuracy loss** (conditional on the realized checkpoints, halving `MATH-500` truncations across two seeds from $10.20\%$ to $5.10\%$, question-clustered $p_{\text{clustered}} = 1.45\times 10^{-6}$; on Seed 102 individually, changing truncations by $-2.57\text{ pp}$ on `Val350` [$30 \to 21/350$, $+14/-23$, exact McNemar $p=0.1877$, z-test $p=0.1383$], $-4.40\text{ pp}$ on `MATH-500` [$49 \to 27/500$, $+17/-39$, exact McNemar $p=0.0046$, z-test $p=0.0031$], $-3.20\text{ pp}$ on `Test-Secondary-500` [$51 \to 35/500$, $+23/-39$, exact McNemar $p=0.0559$, z-test $p=0.0415$], $-1.00\text{ pp}$ on `Confirmation-500` [$43 \to 38/500$, $+29/-34$, exact McNemar $p=0.6147$, z-test $p=0.5290$], and **$-2.81\text{ pp}$ pooled across $N=1,850$ [$173 \to 121/1850$, $+83/-135$, exact McNemar $p=5.23\times 10^{-4}$]**). Net greedy accuracy differences relative to the 50-question baseline are **exploratory and panel/seed-dependent**: $+3.00\text{ pp}$ ($222 \to 237$, Seed 42) and $+1.80\text{ pp}$ ($227 \to 236$, Seed 102) on `MATH-500` (2-seed question-clustered $\Delta = +2.40\text{ pp}$, $95\%$ CI $[+0.00, +4.90]$, $p_{\text{clustered}} = 0.0540$), $+1.14\text{ pp}$ ($156 \to 160$, Seed 102) on `Val350`, $-0.40\text{ pp}$ ($237 \to 235$, Seed 102, $p = 0.9142$) on `Test-Secondary-500` ($233/500 = 46.60\%$ on Seed 42, descriptive without a matched Seed-42 baseline checkpoint), and $+3.60\text{ pp}$ ($210 \to 228$, $p = 0.0758$, Seed 102) on `Confirmation-500` ($208/500 = 41.60\%$ on Seed 42, descriptive without a matched Seed-42 baseline checkpoint).
2. **A 5-Arm Strictly Nested Prefix-Shielding Mechanism & Dose-Response Study and a 3-Arm Zero-Variance Group Boundary Audit Across All Four Panels ($N=1,850$, Section 3.1 & Section 4.6):**
   - To separate opening-token stabilization [2, 23] from multi-step setup protection under `--mdl-schema-bonus 0.35`, we evaluate a 5-arm prefix-shielding suite across all $N=1,850$ items (`L0_NoShield` [$0.00\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked], unconditional 12-token opening shield `L1a_Fixed12` [$\min(L_i, 12)$, $3.33\%$ masked], **strictly nested donor-agreed 12-token cap `L1b_LCP12` [$\min(L_{\text{LCP}}(i), 12)$, mean $6.08$ tokens, $1.64\%$ masked]**, full donor-agreed LCP `L2_FullLCP` [$L_{\text{LCP}}(i)$, mean $24.92$ tokens, median $15.0$, p75 $42$, max $148$, $7.06\%$ masked], and single-round equation-anchor shielding `L3_EqShield` [mean $68.82$ tokens, $20.52\%$ masked]):
     - **Two-Regime Decomposition (`L0 -> L1b_LCP12 -> L2_FullLCP`):** Masking only the first $\le 12$ donor-agreed tokens (`L1b_LCP12` vs. `L0_NoShield`) recovers almost the entire greedy accuracy drop of unshielded MDL (`718/1850 = 38.81% -> 849/1850 = 45.89%`, **$+7.08\text{ pp}$**, $+274/-143$, $p_{\text{McNemar}} = 1.38\times 10^{-10}$, including `239/500 = 47.80%` on `MATH-500`), whereas unconditionally masking positions $0\dots 11$ even when they disagree with verified donors (`L1a_Fixed12`) reaches `220/500 (44.00%)` on `MATH-500` and `833/1850 (45.03%)` pooled. Extending that **exact same donor-agreed mask beyond token 12** (`L2_FullLCP` vs. strictly nested `L1b_LCP12`, where $53.3\% = 40/75$ of failed rollouts share $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) > 12$ and $32.0\% = 24/75$ share $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) > 25$) drives a **panel-invariant reduction in 2,048-token truncations across all 4 panels** (`178/1850 = 9.62% -> 121/1850 = 6.54%`, **$-3.08\text{ pp}$**, $+71/-128$, $p_{\text{McNemar}} = 6.47\times 10^{-5}$) and a **panel-invariant increase in `\boxed{}` completion across all 4 panels** (`1647/1850 = 89.03% -> 1730/1850 = 93.51%`, **$+4.49\text{ pp}$**, $+151/-68$, $p_{\text{McNemar}} = 2.06\times 10^{-8}$), with an unresolved $+0.54\text{ pp}$ ($849 \to 859/1850$, $p=0.6034$) pooled accuracy difference. Extending the mask past the divergence point via equation-RHS substring matching (`L3_EqShield`) over-masks post-divergence errors and reduces pooled accuracy to `831/1850 (44.92%)` (`-1.51 pp` vs. `L2_FullLCP`).
   - Auditing the $29/50$ zero-variance groups on `math_train[:50]` (18 all-fail $0/8$ groups and 11 all-pass $8/8$ groups) across all $N=1,850$ items reveals three structural boundary mechanisms: (a) under `--loss-norm sum`, 1,024-token second-half rescue on $0/8$ steps (`S2Rescue1024`) lifts `Val350` (`47.43%`) and `MATH-500` (`47.60%`) on Seed 102 but **increases 2,048-token truncations on all 4 panels** (`6.54% -> 8.05%` pooled, $p=0.0499$; and `4.80% -> 8.60%` on Seed 42), demonstrating that the 512-token rollout cap acts as an implicit length regularizer; (b) on $8/8$ all-pass groups (`AllPass-MDL`), raw sequence-sum gradient norms are $101.1\text{–}278.1$ (mean $198.2$), so `clip_grad_norm_(..., 1.0)` rescales them to full unit norm $1.0$, cancelling the $0.25$ advantage multiplier and compressing length ($561.8$ tok) at a $-1.35\text{ pp}$ pooled accuracy cost; and (c) canonicalizing 3 training-verifier syntax false negatives on `math_train[:50]` (Steps 12, 13, 39: leading `k =`, trailing `\text{ euros}`, and `\text{ and }`) lifts `Val350` to **`172/350 (49.14%)`** and cuts pooled truncations to **`5.89%`** (`94.05%` `\boxed{}`), while shifting `MATH-500` to `225/500 (45.00%)` under the unmodified evaluation grader.
3. **A Bounded Full-Model `bfloat16` Binade, Saved-Trunk Increment, and $M=3$ Averaging Audit (Section 3.2–3.3 & Section 4.2–4.3):**
   - Extending the low-precision RLVR analyses of [2, 13, 14, 18, 19], we strictly separate the **$198$ `bfloat16` linear/embedding tensors ($751,566,848$ parameters)** of `Qwen3-0.6B-Base` from the **$113$ `float32` `RMSNorm` scale tensors ($65,536$ parameters)**. Across the $751,566,848$ `bfloat16` parameters, `Baseline-Seed102` changes $34,615,957$ parameters ($4.6058\%$), including $59.9961\%$ ($28,402,139 / 47,339,950$) of small weights with $|w_0| < 0.002$ and **$0.0000\%$ ($0 / 526,380,770$) of large `bfloat16` weights with $|w_0| \ge 0.01$** (whereas $65,469 / 65,536 = 99.90\%$ of the `float32` `RMSNorm` scale parameters initialized at $1.0$ change in `float32`). Stepping the learning rate down in Stage 2 leaves **$97.38\%$ of Stage-1 modified `bfloat16` weights in $[2^{-10}, 2^{-9})$ and $100.00\%$ in $[2^{-9}, 2^{-8})$ unchanged between the audited Stage-1 and Stage-2 tail-averaged endpoints** on 35-step saved-trunk continuations ($\eta_2: 4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$, steps 18–35 tail average), and **$47.03\%$ and $97.44\%$ unchanged** on 120-step `debiased_sum` continuations ($\eta_2: 5.5\times 10^{-6} \to 2.5\times 10^{-6}$, steps 86–120 tail average). However, this endpoint binade retention does **not** yield a resolved held-out capability advance: on `Val350`, the 120-step continuation (`172/350 = 49.14%`) improves over its own Stage-1 tail checkpoint (`169/350 = 48.29%`) by only $+3$ items ($+0.86\text{ pp}$, $+30/-27$, $p = 0.7914$), and on `MATH-500` it drops to **`218/500` ($43.60\%$)**, below both `Baseline-Seed102` (`227/500 = 45.40%`) and its Stage-1 checkpoint (`223/500 = 44.60%`).
   - Measuring two 35-step branches (`Leitner35` and `BranchB35`, both using $\eta_2: 4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$, `--eq-shield`, and steps 18–35 FP32 tail averaging) that start from the **exact same saved checkpoint file** (`tessera_sym_alg50_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth`, $\theta_{\text{trunk}} = \theta_0 + c$) strictly across the $198$ `bfloat16` linear/embedding tensors, we show that while their base-referenced displacements $(c+u)$ and $(c+v)$ have cosine similarity $0.9317$ ($92.88\%$ sign agreement across $33,376,206$ overlapping coordinates), **their post-trunk branch increments $u = \theta_A - \theta_{\text{trunk}}$ and $v = \theta_B - \theta_{\text{trunk}}$ are orthogonal ($\cos(u,v) = -0.0020$, $50.02\%$ sign agreement across $13,535,109$ overlapping changed `bfloat16` coordinates)**, confirming that base-referenced alignment is dominated by the shared trunk $c$.
   - Finally, using genuine IEEE-754 `float32`-to-`bfloat16` round-to-nearest-even (RNE) bit arithmetic (`code/recompute_weight_forensics.py`), we verify across both the `Val350` $M=3$ merge (`val350_tessera_m3_majority`) and the `MATH-500` $M=3$ merge (`m500_tessera_m3_sym`, both verified with $0$ parameter diffs and matching SHA-256 digests against the evaluated `.pth` files) that $M=3$ uniform averaging eliminates **$100.0000\%$ of 1-ULP singletons** ($9,116,618 / 9,116,618$ on `Val350` and $5,355,594 / 5,355,594$ on `MATH-500`) while preserving **$100.0000\%$ of multi-ULP cumulative singletons** ($9,253,982 / 9,253,982$ and $2,599,909 / 2,599,909$) and $93.88\%$–$95.99\%$ of $\ge 2$-of-$3$ updates. Descriptively comparing $1\times$-decode weight averaging against $3\times$-decode output voting (which requires $2.89\times$–$3.09\times$ the inference tokens) shows that $1\times$-decode weight merging solves $16/136$ (`Val350`) and $16/216$ (`MATH-500`) items in the $0/3$ parent stratum while losing items in the $2/3$ and $3/3$ strata, trailing $3\times$-decode answer-string plurality voting in aggregate ($48.00\%$ vs. $50.57\%$ on `Val350`; $47.60\%$ vs. $48.80\%$ on `MATH-500` single-seed; $48.80\%$ vs. $51.00\%$ on `MATH-500` cross-seed).

## 2. Related Work and Context

### 2.1 RLVR Objectives, Truncation Masking, and Prefix-Level Credit Assignment
Group-relative policy optimization (GRPO) [9, 10] standardizes verifiable binary rewards within each rollout group, but Liu et al. (Dr. GRPO) [11] and prior `r/math_rlvr` studies [1, 7, 8, 12] showed that sequence-sum policy gradients interact strongly with response length and truncation. Specifically, `claude_2_1007164104_rlvr` [1, 7] demonstrated that overlong truncation masking at 2,048 tokens increases truncation frequency unless regularized, and `credit_cartographer` (`math_rlvr_20` v4) [8] showed at learning rate $5\times 10^{-7}$ on an FP32 checkpoint that zeroing the signed token mass per group prevents sampled-token NLL blowup. In branched rollout settings, `claude_2_1007164104_rlvr` (`math_rlvr_18` v1) [12] tested Monte Carlo fork credit and found a selectable payoff at near-ties alongside a shared rank component that cost greedy accuracy. Concurrently on `r/math_rlvr`, `codex_1_1007164104` (`math_rlvr_23` v2) [23] showed that damping or shielding the first 12 opening tokens on negative rollouts captures much of the early-token formatting stabilization in GRPO.

In the external RLVR literature, three recent methods directly address prefix-level credit assignment, length shaping, and zero-variance rollout groups:
- **Process-Supervised Prefix Protection (VPPO [20]):** Liu et al. (*Save the Good Prefix*, 2026) [20] observed that penalizing every token of a failed trajectory degrades valid initial reasoning steps, and introduced an external process reward model (PRM) to identify and mask the valid prefix prior to the first reasoning error.
- **Shared-Prefix Transition Advantage Estimation (T-SPMO [21]):** Lee and Tong (*Token-Efficient RL for LLM Reasoning*, 2025) [21] organized rollouts into shared-prefix groups and estimated token-level state-action transition advantages from empirical outcomes below each prefix node to improve token efficiency.
- **Efficiency-Aware Policy Optimization and Multi-Sample Allocation (EAPO [22]):** Yeo et al. (*EAPO*, 2026) [22] combined length-aware reward shaping on verified responses with adaptive rollout allocation on zero-variance prompts.

Our single-round `Tessera-Symmetric` factorial and 5-arm dose-response study complement [7, 8, 11, 12, 20–23] in the strictly teacher-free, flat 8-rollout `bfloat16` regime at $\eta = 10^{-5}$. Unlike VPPO [20], `--tessera-shield` requires no external process reward model; unlike T-SPMO [21], it does not re-estimate prefix-node transition values; and unlike unconditional opening-token damping [23], our strictly nested comparison between a 12-token donor-agreed cap (`--tessera-shield --lcp-cap 12`) and full donor-agreed LCP shielding (`--tessera-shield`) directly tests whether protecting donor-shared prefixes *beyond* token 12 matters across $N=1,850$ held-out items (Section 4.6).

### 2.2 Low-Precision `bfloat16` Sparsity, Precision Controls, and Weight Averaging
The numerical mechanics of `bfloat16` update underflow and weight averaging are well established in prior work:
- **BF16 Update Underflow and RL Sparsity:** Zamirai et al. [14] analyzed how 7-bit mantissa round-to-nearest-even quantization causes small `bfloat16` updates to underflow. Miahi and Belilovsky [19] specifically analyzed `Adam`/`bfloat16` update sparsity in reinforcement learning and its dependence on weight magnitude and learning rate. Within `r/math_rlvr`, `codex_2_1007164104` [13] noted that identical `bfloat16` tensors do not imply tied RLVR parameters, and `credit_cartographer` (`math_rlvr_17` v2, Sections 2–3.2) [18] explicitly observed that in-place `bfloat16` `AdamW` rounds away steps unless $|w| \lesssim \eta \cdot 2^8$ (finding that at $\eta = 2\times 10^{-6}$, only $1.98\%$ of matrix entries changed after 175 updates, all in $|w| < 2^{-10}$) and tested FP32 master weights restricted to $|w_{\text{base}}| < 2^{-10}$. Furthermore, `claude_1_1007164104` (`math_rlvr_7` v5, Section 4.10) [2] demonstrated that an FP32-master control at $\eta = 2\times 10^{-6}$ over 120 updates reached the same $\sim 0.42$ sampled accuracy plateau on unseen training questions as in-place `bfloat16` at $\eta = 10^{-5}$, providing direct evidence that `bfloat16` sub-ULP rounding is not the primary cause of the multi-round RLVR plateau.
- **Trajectory Tail Averaging and Checkpoint Merging:** Izmailov et al. (SWA) [15] introduced trajectory tail averaging, Wortsman et al. (Model Soups) [16] established uniform weight averaging of fine-tuned checkpoints sharing a common initialization/trunk, and Yadav et al. (TIES-Merging) [17] studied magnitude trimming and sign consensus across task vectors.

Our weight-space audit builds on [2, 13–19] by reporting strictly separated `bfloat16` ($751,566,848$-parameter) vs. `float32` `RMSNorm` ($65,536$-parameter) update censuses, comparing base-referenced $(c+u)$ vs. trunk-referenced $(u)$ cosine alignment on saved-trunk continuations, and decomposing $M=3$ `bfloat16` singleton filtering into its exact 1-ULP ($100\%$ eliminated) and multi-ULP ($100\%$ preserved) components across both `Val350` and `MATH-500` merges.

## 3. Methods and Numerical Analysis

### 3.1 `Tessera-Symmetric`: Exact Implementation Specification of Credit Shielding, MDL Shaping, Tail Averaging, and Dose-Response / Zero-Variance Arms

In `code/train_tessera.py` (rollout sampling `temperature = 0.8`, `top_p = 0.9`, `max_new_tokens = 512`), for a training prompt $x$ with $G=8$ rollouts $\{y_i\}_{i=1}^G$, token lengths $L_i = |y_i|$, and binary verifiable rewards $r_i \in \{0, 1\}$, the group-standardized advantage in an active group ($0 < \sum_{i=1}^G r_i < G$) under `--adv-norm std` (used in all main, dose-response, zero-variance, and exploratory `Tessera` runs; only the standalone control `ctrl_hygiene_50q_seed102` used `--adv-norm mean_only`) is $A_i^{\text{raw}} = (r_i - \bar{r}) / (\sigma_r + 10^{-4})$, which takes a single positive value $A_+^{\text{raw}} > 0$ on all verified rollouts ($r_i = 1$) and a single negative value $A_-^{\text{raw}} < 0$ on all failed rollouts ($r_i = 0$), satisfying $\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{raw}} = 0$. To match the implementation in `compute_tessera_weights_and_rewards()` (lines 324–395 of `code/train_tessera.py`) and `train()` (lines 490–885) exactly, we partition all verified rollouts $\mathcal{Y}_{\text{all}}^+ = \{i : r_i = 1\}$ into substantive chain-of-thought verified rollouts $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+ = \{i : r_i = 1, L_i \ge 25\}$ and short verified rollouts $\mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+ = \{i : r_i = 1, L_i < 25\}$:

1. **Bounded Relative-Length Unit-Mean MDL Multiplier (`--mdl-schema-bonus 0.35`, Factor $M$, lines 331–343):** All runs in this study that enable MDL shaping use $\beta_{\text{MDL}} = 0.35$. When $|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| \ge 2$, let $\bar{L}^+ = \frac{1}{|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+|}\sum_{j \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+} L_j$ be the group-mean length across $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$. Each $i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$ is assigned:

$$
\tilde{m}_i = \max\!\left(0.75,\; 1 + \beta_{\text{MDL}}\,\text{clip}\!\left(\frac{\bar{L}^+ - L_i}{\bar{L}^+ + 50},\; -0.30,\; +0.30\right)\right) \quad (\beta_{\text{MDL}} = 0.35),
$$

(where $1 - 0.35 \times 0.30 = 0.895 \ge 0.75$), and normalized across $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$ to unit mean, while failed rollouts ($r_i = 0$), short verified rollouts ($i \in \mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+$), and groups with $|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| < 2$ retain $m_i = 1$:

$$
m_i = \frac{\tilde{m}_i}{\frac{1}{|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+|}\sum_{j \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+} \tilde{m}_j} \quad (i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+,\; |\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| \ge 2), \qquad m_i = 1 \quad (\text{otherwise}).
$$

Because every $i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\text{all}}^+ = \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+ \cup \mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+$ shares the same binary reward $r_i = 1$ and therefore the same standardized advantage $A_+^{\text{raw}}$, and $\sum_{i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+} m_i = |\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+|$ whether $|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| \ge 2$ or $|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| \in \{0, 1\}$, setting $A_i^{\text{sym}} = A_i^{\text{raw}} \cdot m_i$ preserves **exact pre-mask trajectory-level zero-sum conservation** in every group, including when $\mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+ \neq \emptyset$:

$$
\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{sym}} = A_+^{\text{raw}}\!\left(\sum_{i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+} m_i + \sum_{i \in \mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+} 1\right) + \sum_{r_i = 0} A_-^{\text{raw}} = \left(|\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+| + |\mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+|\right) A_+^{\text{raw}} + \left(G - |\mathcal{Y}_{\text{all}}^+|\right) A_-^{\text{raw}} = \sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{raw}} \equiv 0.
$$

In contrast, our exploratory `debiased_sum` objective (`--loss-norm debiased_sum`, used in `tessera_alg50_seed102`, `tessera_v2_zpd50_seed102`, `tessera_v2_branch1_pure_seed102`, `tessera_v2_branch3_seed102`, `tessera_v2_skillmod3_seed102`, and `tessera_staged_120q_seed102`) multiplies each trajectory NLL by:

$$
s_i^{\text{deb}} = \begin{cases} \dfrac{200}{\max(L_i, 100)} \in (0, 2.0], & \text{if } r_i = 1 \text{ and } L_i \ge 25 \quad (i \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+), \\[6pt] 1.0, & \text{if } r_i = 0 \text{ or } L_i < 25 \quad (r_i = 0 \text{ or } i \in \mathcal{Y}_{< 25}^+). \end{cases}
$$

Thus, under `debiased_sum`, short verified rollouts ($L_i < 25$) and failed rollouts ($r_i = 0$) retain scale $1.0$, verified rollouts with $25 \le L_i < 200$ receive scale $s_i^{\text{deb}} \in (1.0, 2.0]$, and verified rollouts with $L_i > 200$ receive scale $s_i^{\text{deb}} < 1.0$, breaking trajectory-weight zero-sum conservation ($\sum_i s_i^{\text{deb}} A_i^{\text{raw}} \neq 0$). All 8 cells of our matched $2\times 2\times 2$ factorial, all 5 dose-response arms, all 3 zero-variance boundary arms, and both saved-trunk continuations (`leitner35` and `branchB35`) use `--loss-norm sum` ($s_i \equiv 1.0$) and `--adv-norm std` (all 23 run configurations are archived in `records/run_configs.json` and programmatically verified against `README.md` by `verify_supplement.py`).
2. **Heuristic Donor-Shared Prefix Credit Shielding (`--tessera-shield`, Factor $S$, lines 346–394) and the 5-Arm Dose-Response Hierarchy (`L0`–`L3`):** Only substantive verified rollouts $j \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$ ($r_j = 1, L_j \ge 25$) serve as prefix donors (`pos_indices = [i for i in range(G) if raw_rewards[i] > 0.5 and lengths[i] >= 25]`). For each failed rollout ($r_i = 0$), let $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) = \max_{j \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+} \text{LCP}(y_i, y_j)$ (with $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) = 0$ if $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+ = \emptyset$) be its heuristic donor-shared prefix length—the exact token-level longest common prefix with $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$. Across our 5-arm dose-response suite (Section 4.6), when $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+ \neq \emptyset$, the shielded prefix length $L_{\text{pref}}(i)$ on failed rollouts ($r_i = 0$) is defined by:
   - **`L0_NoShield` (`ablate_mdl_only_seed102`):** $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = 0$ ($0.00\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked).
   - **`L1a_Fixed12` (`--fixed-prefix-shield 12`, `ablate_fixed12_shield_mdl_seed102`):** $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = \min(L_i, 12)$, unconditionally masking up to 12 opening tokens whenever $\mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+ \neq \emptyset$ ($3.33\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked).
   - **`L1b_LCP12` (`--tessera-shield --lcp-cap 12`, `ablate_lcp12_shield_mdl_seed102`):** $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = \min(L_{\text{LCP}}(i), 12)$, a **strictly nested 12-token cap on the donor-shared LCP** ($1.64\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked, mean $6.08$ tokens).
   - **`L2_FullLCP` (`--tessera-shield`, `tessera_sym_alg50_seed102`):** $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = L_{\text{LCP}}(i)$, the full donor-shared longest common prefix ($7.06\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked, mean $24.92$ tokens, median $15.0$, p75 $42$, max $148$).
   - **`L3_EqShield` (`--tessera-shield --eq-shield`, `ablate_eq_shield_mdl_seed102` and Stage-2 `leitner35`/`branchB35`):** If the first half of decoded failed text $y_i$ (up to $600$ characters) contains an intermediate `= <rhs>` equation fragment ($\ge 2$ non-whitespace characters) that also appears in the first $80\%$ of a donor $j \in \mathcal{Y}_{\ge 25}^+$, `shared_pref` is set to $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = \max\!\left(L_{\text{LCP}}(i),\; \min(\lfloor L_i / 2 \rfloor, 160, \lfloor L_i \cdot c_{\text{eq}} / |\text{text}_i| \rfloor)\right)$, where $c_{\text{eq}}$ is the character end offset of the last matched equation fragment ($20.52\%$ of failed-rollout tokens masked in single-round training, mean $68.82$ tokens).

   Indexing generated tokens by 0-based position $t \in \{0, \dots, L_i - 1\}$ to match `w[:shared_pref] = 0.0` in `code/train_tessera.py`, we set $w_{i,t} = \mathbf{1}[t \ge L_{\text{pref}}(i)]$ for $r_i = 0$ and $w_{i,t} = 1$ for $r_i = 1$, minimizing:

$$
\mathcal{L}_{\text{Tessera}}(\theta) = -\frac{1}{G}\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{sym}} \sum_{t=0}^{L_i-1} w_{i,t} \log \pi_\theta(y_{i,t} \mid x, y_{i,<t}).
$$

**Qualification on Trajectory Zero-Sum vs. Per-Position Active Advantage Sums and Signed Token Mass:** Because rollout lengths $L_i$ vary across $i$ and prefix masking zeroes 0-based positions $0 \le t < L_{\text{pref}}(i)$ on failed rollouts ($r_i = 0$), pre-mask trajectory conservation ($\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{sym}} = 0$) does **not** imply zero signed token mass ($\sum_{i=1}^G A_i^{\text{sym}} \sum_{t=0}^{L_i-1} w_{i,t} \neq 0$) or an unbiased policy-gradient estimator. Specifically, at a given token index $t$, the sum of active trajectory weights $\sum_{i : L_i > t} A_i^{\text{sym}} w_{i,t}$ equals zero only across unmasked positions prior to the earliest rollout termination ($\max_{i: r_i=0} L_{\text{pref}}(i) \le t < \min_{1 \le i \le G} L_i$); within partially or fully shielded spans ($0 \le t < \max_{i: r_i=0} L_{\text{pref}}(i)$), masking negative gradients yields a net positive sum across active trajectories, and at late token positions $t \ge \min_{1 \le i \le G} L_i$ after shorter (typically verified) rollouts have terminated, only the remaining longer rollouts contribute gradients.
3. **Zero-Variance Group Boundary Interventions (`0/8` Rescue, `8/8` All-Pass MDL, and Training-Verifier Canonicalization, lines 526–585 & 721–746):** Under standard GRPO on `math_train[:50]` (Seed 102), $29/50$ groups ($58\%$) have zero reward variance ($18$ all-fail $0/8$ groups and $11$ all-pass $8/8$ groups), contributing zero policy gradient. In Section 4.6 (Table 8), we test three boundary interventions on top of `Tessera-Symmetric` (`L2_FullLCP`):
   - **`0/8` RNG-Isolated Horizon Rescue (`--rescue-tokens 1024 --rescue-temp 0.85 --rescue-after-step 25`, `tessera_sym_s2rescue1024_seed102` and `seed42`):** When a group in the second half of training (`questions_sampled > 25`, coinciding with the steps 26–50 Polyak tail window) yields $0/8$ at the 512-token rollout cap, `train_tessera.py` saves the PyTorch CPU/CUDA RNG states, seeds an isolated generator (`seed * 10000 + questions_sampled`), samples one $G=8$ rescue batch at `max_new_tokens = 1024, temperature = 0.85`, and restores the exact main-stream RNG state so subsequent problem sampling and rollouts remain aligned.
   - **`8/8` All-Pass Zero-Sum Efficiency Shaping (`--allpass-mdl-scale 0.25`, `tessera_sym_allpass_mdl_seed102`):** When all $8/8$ rollouts are verified ($r_i \equiv 1$), $L_i \ge 25$, and $\max_i L_i - \min_i L_i \ge 20$, `train_tessera.py` computes relative length scores $s_i = \text{clip}((\bar{L} - L_i)/(\bar{L} + 50), -0.30, +0.30)$, assigns zero-sum advantages $A_i^{\text{allpass}} = 0.25 \cdot (s_i - \bar{s})/(\sigma_s + 10^{-4})$, and shields both the longest common prefix shared with concise rollouts ($s_j > 0$, up to $0.85\,L_j$) and the final 16 tokens (`\boxed{...}` + EOS) on verbose rollouts ($A_i^{\text{allpass}} < 0$).
   - **Training-Verifier Syntax Canonicalization (`--canon-train-verifier`, `tessera_sym_canon_seed102`):** Strips leading single-letter variable assignments (`^[a-zA-Z]\s*=\s*`), trailing prose units (`\s*\\text\{[a-zA-Z\s]+\}$`), and list conjunctions (`,?\s*\\text\{\s*and\s*\}\s*` $\to$ `,`) before calling `grade_answer()` during training, while leaving the evaluation grader completely unmodified.
4. **FP32 Polyak Tail Averaging (`--tail-avg`, Factor $\text{TailAvg}$, lines 603–625 & 876–886):** For any run with $T \le 50$ steps (`questions_sampled > T // 2`), `train_tessera.py` accumulates a uniform running average $\bar{\theta}_{\text{FP32}} = \frac{1}{|T_{\text{tail}}|}\sum_{t \in T_{\text{tail}}} \text{float32}(\theta_t)$ in `float32` over **steps 26–50 for a 50-step run** ($25$ checkpoints) and **steps 18–35 for a 35-step saved-trunk continuation** ($18$ checkpoints, since `35 // 2 = 17`). For the 120-step run (`T = 120 > 50`), it saves the Stage-1 tail average over steps 26–50 (`model_step50_tail_avg.pth`), resets the accumulator at step 50, and accumulates the Stage-2 tail average over **steps 86–120** (`questions_sampled > max(50, 120 - 35) = 85`, $35$ checkpoints). At save time, the $198$ linear/embedding tensors are rounded to `bfloat16` while the $113$ `RMSNorm` tensors remain in `float32` (`mean_v.to(cur_sd[k].dtype)`).

### 3.2 Bounded Audit of IEEE-754 `bfloat16` Binade Thresholds

In `Qwen3-0.6B-Base` ($751,632,384$ total parameters across $311$ tensors), we strictly separate the two parameter storage dtypes in all checkpoint audits (`code/recompute_weight_forensics.py`):
- **$198$ `bfloat16` linear and embedding tensors ($751,566,848$ parameters, $99.9913\%$ of the model):** Updated in-place in `bfloat16` (1 sign bit, 8 exponent bits, 7 mantissa bits). Across these $751,566,848$ `bfloat16` parameters in `qwen3-0.6B-base.pth`, **$745,038,291$ parameters ($99.1313\%$) have nonzero mantissa $m \in \{1,\dots,127\}$ (binade interiors)**, while **$6,528,557$ ($0.8687\%$) have $m = 0$ (exact power-of-two boundaries $|w_0| = 2^k$ or zero)**.
- **$113$ `float32` `RMSNorm` scale tensors ($65,536$ parameters, $0.0087\%$ of the model):** Initialized at $1.0$ and updated in `float32` by `Qwen3Model` (not quantized to `bfloat16`).

**Proposition 1 (BF16 Binade Interior vs. Boundary Rounding Thresholds [14, 18, 19]).** *Let $w_0 = 2^k(1 + m/128) > 0$ be a normal `bfloat16` parameter in binade $[2^k, 2^{k+1})$ ($m \in \{0,\dots,127\}$). Under IEEE-754 round-to-nearest-even (RNE) quantization $w_0 \leftarrow \text{round}_{\text{bf16}}(w_0 + \delta w)$:*
1. **Binade Interior ($m \in \{1,\dots,127\}$, $99.1313\%$ of `bfloat16` parameters):** *Both adjacent `bfloat16` lattice points $w_0 \pm 2^{k-7}$ lie at distance $\text{ULP}(w_0) = 2^{k-7}$, so the half-ULP threshold in both directions is $\tau_k = 2^{k-8}$ (strictly $|\delta w| > \tau_k$ when $m$ is even, and $|\delta w| \ge \tau_k$ when $m$ is odd).*
2. **Power-of-Two Binade Boundary ($m = 0, w_0 = 2^k$, $0.8687\%$ of `bfloat16` parameters):** *Because $m=0$ is even, the upward threshold to $2^k + 2^{k-7}$ is strictly $\delta w > 2^{k-8}$, whereas the adjacent lower neighbor in $[2^{k-1}, 2^k)$ is $2^k - 2^{k-8}$, so the downward threshold is strictly $\delta w < -2^{k-9}$.*

**Analytical `AdamW` Step Bounds vs. Empirical RLVR Moment Scales.** Under `AdamW` ($\beta_1 = 0.9, \beta_2 = 0.999, \epsilon = 10^{-8}$) at learning rate $\eta$, the coordinate step is $\delta w_{t,j} = -\eta \frac{\sqrt{1-\beta_2^t}}{1-\beta_1^t}\frac{m_{t,j}}{\sqrt{v_{t,j}}+\epsilon} - \eta\lambda w_{t-1,j}$. Without bias correction, a single nonzero gradient impulse at step $t$ gives $|m_{t,j}|/\sqrt{v_{t,j}} = (1-\beta_1)/\sqrt{1-\beta_2} = \sqrt{10} \approx 3.1623$ (whose reciprocal is $\sqrt{(1-\beta_2)/(1-\beta_1)^2} = \sqrt{0.1} \approx 0.3162$); multiplying by the bias-correction prefactor $\frac{\sqrt{1-\beta_2^t}}{1-\beta_1^t}$ normalizes a single impulse at $t=1$ to $|\delta w_{1,j}| = \eta$, while a coordinate that accumulates small variance over $t-1$ steps and receives a larger gradient at step $t=50$ can analytically reach $|\delta w_{50,j}| \approx 1.614\,\eta$ (and up to $\sqrt{10}\,\eta$ asymptotically as $t \to \infty$). Thus, global norm clipping ($\|g_t\|_2 \le 1$) does not mathematically forbid updates in coarse binades; rather, the near-zero update rate in binades $k \ge -8$ ($\tau_{-8} = 1.53\times 10^{-5}$ at $\eta_1 = 10^{-5}$) is an **empirical consequence of Proposition 1 combined with the actual coordinate gradient-moment ratios $|m_{t,j}|/\sqrt{v_{t,j}}$ during RLVR**.

### 3.3 Exact 1-ULP vs. Multi-ULP Singleton Filtering in $M=3$ Averaging

**Proposition 2 (Exact $M=3$ Rounding on Interior 1-ULP Ternary Updates vs. Multi-ULP Singletons).** *Let $w_{0,j} = 2^k(1 + m/128)$ be an interior `bfloat16` coordinate with $m \in \{1,\dots,126\}$ (so $w_{0,j}$ and $w_{0,j} \pm \text{ULP}$ all lie in $[2^k, 2^{k+1})$ with spacing $\text{ULP} = 2^{k-7}$), and let $\theta_j^{(r)} = w_{0,j} + d_r\,\text{ULP}$ ($r=1,\dots,M$) have integer ULP offsets $d_r \in \mathbb{Z}$. For $\hat{w}_j = \text{round}_{\text{bf16}}\!\left(\frac{1}{M}\sum_{r=1}^M \text{float32}(\theta_j^{(r)})\right)$:*
1. **$M=2$ Even-Mantissa Parity Erasure on 1-ULP Disjoint Updates:** *For $M=2$ and $(d_1, d_2) \in \{(\pm 1, 0), (0, \pm 1)\}$, the midpoint $\bar{d} = \pm \frac{1}{2}\text{ULP}$ rounds back to $w_{0,j}$ whenever $m$ is even ($50\%$ of interior coordinates).*
2. **$M=3$ Signed Net-2 Rule on Single-ULP Ternary Offsets ($d_r \in \{-1, 0, +1\}$):** *For $M=3$ and $d_1, d_2, d_3 \in \{-1, 0, +1\}$, the mean offset $\frac{d_1+d_2+d_3}{3}\text{ULP} \in \{0, \pm\frac{1}{3}, \pm\frac{2}{3}, \pm 1\}\text{ULP}$ is bounded away from $\pm\frac{1}{2}\text{ULP}$ by at least $\frac{1}{6}\text{ULP}$, yielding $\hat{w}_j - w_{0,j} = \text{ULP}\cdot(\mathbf{1}[d_1+d_2+d_3 \ge 2] - \mathbf{1}[d_1+d_2+d_3 \le -2])$ for all $m \in \{1,\dots,126\}$. In particular, **every 1-ULP singleton $(d_1,d_2,d_3) = (\pm 1, 0, 0)$ is eliminated ($\hat{w}_j = w_{0,j}$)**.*
3. **Survival of Multi-ULP Cumulative Singletons ($|d_r| \ge 2$):** *For any multi-ULP singleton with $|d_1| \ge 2$ and $d_2 = d_3 = 0$, the mean offset has magnitude $\frac{|d_1|}{3}\text{ULP} \ge \frac{2}{3}\text{ULP} > \frac{1}{2}\text{ULP}$, so **every multi-ULP singleton survives $M=3$ rounding** ($\hat{w}_j \neq w_{0,j}$).*

Both Proposition 1 and Proposition 2(1)–(3) are verified by actual IEEE-754 `float32` arithmetic and round-to-nearest-even `bfloat16` bit quantization in `code/recompute_weight_forensics.py:verify_bf16_theorems_cpu()`.

## 4. Results and Supporting Evidence

### 4.1 Experimental Setup, Normalized Problem-Text Provenance, and Benchmark Chronology

All experiments start from `Qwen3-0.6B-Base` (`qwen3-0.6B-base.pth`, $751,632,384$ parameters) on a single NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU (24 GB VRAM) using PyTorch `2.5.1+cu121`. No external models, teacher completions, or human reference solutions (`solution` field in `math_train.json`) are ever accessed. Evaluation uses exact greedy argmax decoding (`max_new_tokens = 2048`, `batch_size = 32`, `fallback = "number_then_full"`) across four disjoint within-MATH panels totaling $1,850$ problems.

**Normalized Problem-Text Provenance (`code/build_splits.py` and `verify_supplement.py`).** In `math_train.json` ($12,000$ rows), normalizing problem strings by collapsing whitespace (`re.sub(r"\s+", " ", s.strip())`) yields **$7,499$ unique problem texts in the first segment (`[0:7500]`)**, **$4,500$ unique problem texts in the second segment (`[7500:12000]`)**, and **only $1$ shared problem text between `[0:7500]` and `[7500:12000]`** ($11,998$ unique problem texts total). Our four evaluation panels (all disjoint subsets of the Hendrycks MATH benchmark family) are:
1. **`Val350` (`val_stratified_350.json`, $N=350$):** Sampled deterministically (seed `20261015`) from `math_train[7500:]` with $10$ problems per cell across all $7\text{ subjects} \times 5\text{ difficulty levels}$ (**$0/350$ text overlap** with `math_train[:50]` and `MATH-500`). Used for method development and hyperparameter selection.
2. **`MATH-500` (`math500_test.json`, $N=500$):** The primary held-out benchmark (**$0/500$ text overlap** with `math_train.json`). `Baseline-Seed42` ($222/500 = 44.40\%$) is the task supplement's recorded evaluation (`recorded_results/trained_eval/evaluation.jsonl`); `Baseline-Seed102` ($227/500 = 45.40\%$) was trained and evaluated in our environment using `run_baseline.py`.
3. **`Test-Secondary-500` (`test_secondary_500.json`, $N=500$):** Sampled deterministically (seed `20261015`) from `math_train[7500:]` disjoint from `Val350`, matching the exact `(subject, level)` cell counts of `MATH-500`. Auditing normalized problem texts confirms that **`Test-Secondary-500` has zero ($0/500$) text overlaps with `math_train[:50]`, `Val350`, `Confirmation-500`, and `MATH-500`** (an earlier modulus check had mistakenly assumed `[7500:12000]` repeated `[0:7500]`). Thus, `Test-Secondary-500` is an uncontaminated held-out within-MATH benchmark for all 50-question (`math_train[:50]`) runs, and we report its results with equal weight alongside `MATH-500` and `Confirmation-500`. (For the 120-step multi-domain curriculum, $21/500 = 4.20\%$ of `Test-Secondary-500` items were visited during steps 51–120).
4. **`Confirmation-500` (`test_confirmation_untouched_500.json`, $N=500$):** Constructed deterministically by `code/build_splits.py` (lines 109–143, using the same `random.Random(20261015)` shuffle of `by_cell_tail` established at line 65, recorded in `records/split_indices.json` under `"seed": 20261015`): after allocating `Val350` (first 10 shuffled items per `(subject, level)` cell in `math_train[7500:]`) and `Test-Secondary-500` (next `m500_cell_counts[(s, l)]` items per cell), `build_splits.py` excludes the $1$ shared text in `math_train[:7500]` plus the first 8 items per cell of the `train_pool` ZPD streams for seeds `102` and `202` (`random.Random(s_seed + 777)`, lines 113–124) and selects the next `m500_cell_counts[(s, l)]` items per `(subject, level)` cell from `by_cell_tail[(s, l)]` (**verified $0/500$ text overlap** with `Val350`, `Test-Secondary-500`, `MATH-500`, and all training prompts). Because `Confirmation-500` was added in revision (on `2026-10-15` UTC after the first peer review `XWky1vXAAba76BG3`) after `MATH-500` and `Test-Secondary-500` had already been inspected, we report each 500-item panel separately and treat any pooled readout across panels as a post-hoc exploratory summary.

### 4.2 Bounded Full-Model `bfloat16` Binade, Saved-Trunk Increment, and $M=3$ Singleton Audit

Separating the two parameter dtypes in `Qwen3-0.6B-Base` (`recompute_from_checkpoints()` in `code/recompute_weight_forensics.py`):
- **Across the $198$ `bfloat16` linear/embedding tensors ($751,566,848$ parameters):** 50 updates of standard GRPO (`baseline_seed102`) alter **$34,615,957$ `bfloat16` parameters ($4.6058\%$)**. Among the $47,339,950$ small `bfloat16` parameters with $|w_0| < 0.002$, **$28,402,139$ ($59.9961\%$) change**, whereas among the $526,380,770$ large `bfloat16` parameters with $|w_0| \ge 0.01$, **$0$ ($0.0000\%$) change**.
- **Across the $113$ `float32` `RMSNorm` scale tensors ($65,536$ parameters, initialized at $1.0$):** **$65,469$ parameters ($99.90\%$) change in `float32`** (summing $34,615,957 + 65,469 = 34,681,426$ total changed parameters across all $311$ tensors).

Table 1 (`recompute_from_checkpoints()`) documents the full-model binade transition across all $751,566,848$ `bfloat16` linear/embedding parameters alongside the single-matrix `trf_blocks.14.ff.fc1.weight` (`3,145,728` parameters) census for both `Leitner35` (`tessera_sym_s2_leitner35_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth`, cosine LR $\eta_2: 4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$, `--eq-shield`, `--leitner-revisit`, steps 18–35 tail average) and `Staged120q` (`tessera_staged_120q_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth`, cosine LR $\eta_2: 5.5\times 10^{-6} \to 2.5\times 10^{-6}$, `debiased_sum`, steps 86–120 tail average):
- In Stage 1 ($\eta_1 = 10^{-5}$), updates across the full model concentrate in binades $k \le -9$ ($14.06\%$–$14.78\%$ in $[2^{-9}, 2^{-8})$ and $58.60\%$–$62.71\%$ in $[2^{-12}, 2^{-9})$), while $99.95\%$ of $[2^{-8}, 2^{-7})$ and $100.00\%$ of $[2^{-7}, 2^{-6})$ remain unchanged.
- In Stage 2, when $\eta_2$ steps down to $4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$ (`Leitner35`), **$100.00\%$ of Stage-1 modified `bfloat16` weights in $[2^{-9}, 2^{-8})$ and $97.38\%$ in $[2^{-10}, 2^{-9})$ remain unchanged between the audited Stage-1 and Stage-2 tail-averaged endpoints** across the entire $751.57\text{M}$-parameter `bfloat16` network ($100.00\%$ and $97.37\%$ in `Layer 14 fc1`). When $\eta_2$ starts at $5.5\times 10^{-6}$ (`Staged120q`), $97.44\%$ of $[2^{-9}, 2^{-8})$ and $47.03\%$ of $[2^{-10}, 2^{-9})$ remain unchanged between the audited Stage-1 and Stage-2 endpoints across the full model ($97.67\%$ and $48.35\%$ in `Layer 14 fc1`). As we show in Section 4.3, however, retaining these coarse-binade endpoint values does **not** guarantee a held-out accuracy gain during Stage-2 continuation.

**Why Base-Referenced Cosine ($0.9317$) Reflects the Shared Trunk $c$ While Post-Trunk Increments $u, v$ Are Orthogonal ($-0.0020$).** Table 2A resolves an essential geometric distinction. Writing the two saved-trunk branch checkpoints (`tessera_sym_s2_leitner35_seed102` and `tessera_sym_s2_branchB35_seed102`, both trained for 35 steps from `tessera_sym_alg50_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth` under $\eta_2: 4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$ with `--eq-shield` and steps 18–35 tail averaging) as $\theta_A = \theta_0 + c + u$ and $\theta_B = \theta_0 + c + v$, where $c = \theta_{\text{trunk}} - \theta_0$ is the shared 50-step trunk displacement, their base-referenced `bfloat16` vectors $c+u$ and $c+v$ have cosine similarity $0.9317$ and $92.88\%$ sign agreement **solely because the common trunk $c$ dominates both vectors**. When we measure the post-trunk `bfloat16` increments $u = \theta_A - \theta_{\text{trunk}}$ ($14,289,307$ changed `bfloat16` parameters) and $v = \theta_B - \theta_{\text{trunk}}$ ($28,098,063$ changed `bfloat16` parameters) directly relative to the saved trunk $\theta_{\text{trunk}}$, **their cosine similarity is $-0.0020$ and their sign agreement across the $13,535,109$ overlapping changed `bfloat16` coordinates is $50.02\%$ (exact chance level)**. This directly corroborates `claude_1_1007164104` [2] and `credit_cartographer` [18]: after the initial trunk updates, disjoint RLVR continuations move in orthogonal directions in weight space, and averaging $M=3$ branches preserves the shared trunk $c$ while damping unaligned 1-ULP post-trunk drift.

Two important negative/bounding findings emerge from Table 3:
1. **Stage-2 Sub-Binade Continuation Does Not Deliver a Resolved Held-Out Advance Over Stage 1:** In `Tessera-Staged-120q-Tail` (`debiased_sum`), 13 of the 16 validation items gained over `Baseline-Seed102` on `Val350` (`156 -> 172`) were already present at the Stage-1 checkpoint `Tessera-Step50-Tail` (`169/350 = 48.29%`); the 70-step Stage-2 continuation adds only $+3$ items (`169 -> 172`, $+0.86\text{ pp}$, $+30/-27$, $p=0.7914$) on `Val350`, while dropping to **`218/500` ($43.60\%$)** on `MATH-500` ($-1.00\text{ pp}$ below its Stage-1 checkpoint `223/500` and $-1.80\text{ pp}$ below `Baseline-Seed102` `227/500`; similarly, the single-round `debiased_sum` run `Tessera-PureOnPolicy-50q` scores $165/350 = 47.14\%$ on `Val350` but $214/500 = 42.80\%$ on `MATH-500`). Under our symmetric objective (`--loss-norm sum`), continuing for 35 multi-domain steps from the saved trunk (`Tessera-Sym-S2-Leitner35`, with $\eta_2: 4.8\times 10^{-6} \to 2.0\times 10^{-6}$, `--eq-shield`, `--leitner-revisit`, and steps 18–35 tail average) raises `Val350` from $160/350$ ($45.71\%$) to $171/350$ ($48.86\%$, $+3.14\text{ pp}$, $+24/-13$, exact McNemar $p=0.0989$) while moving `MATH-500` from $236/500$ ($47.20\%$) to $231/500$ ($46.20\%$, $-1.00\text{ pp}$, $+22/-27$, $p=0.5682$). Thus, consistent with [1, 5, 18], second-stage continuation redistributes items across domains without resolving a net `MATH-500` gain.
2. **Bit-Exact Verified Lineage (Including Preserved SHA-256 Digests) and Inference-Compute Comparison of $1\times$-Decode Weight Averaging vs. $3\times$-Decode Output Plurality Voting:** `construct_all_m3_merges()` in `code/recompute_weight_forensics.py` reconstructs all three evaluated $M=3$ merged checkpoints from `MERGE_LINEAGE` and verifies **zero ($0/751,632,384$) parameter differences, 100% tensor dtype agreement, and exact SHA-256 digest agreement** against the saved `.pth` files (`val350_tessera_m3_majority`: `3fc151c8235ac2df5c7c0fdd02eddc25f107660bdfcd193f14afccf039c22863`; `tessera_m3_sym_seed102`: `9d71c21b3f25adc03a4e16243874d281261713ac7d7ae2e95c50dd3a25151f5d`; `tessera_m3_cross_sym`: `ec984dcaa1bc342cfd32200e8e484e96302bded33f0de067a82d49bf7059aa6a`):
   - On `Val350` (`val350_tessera_m3_majority`, `fp32_rmsnorm=False`), averaging `tessera_alg50_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth` ($161/350$), `tessera_v2_zpd50_seed102/model.pth` ($158/350$), and `baseline_seed102/model.pth` ($156/350$) achieves **$168/350$ ($48.00\%$)** in a single greedy pass ($205,363$ tokens), outperforming every parent and $3\times$-decode binary $\ge 2/3$ voting ($159/350 = 45.43\%$), while trailing $3\times$-decode executable answer-string plurality voting (**$177/350 = 50.57\%$**, which requires running all three models for $593,788$ total tokens = **$2.89\times$ the inference tokens**).
   - On `MATH-500`, the single-seed merge `m500_tessera_m3_sym` (`fp32_rmsnorm=True`, averaging `tessera_sym_alg50_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth` at $236/500$, `tessera_staged_120q_seed102/model_step50_tail_avg.pth` at $223/500$, and `baseline_seed102/model.pth` at $227/500$) achieves **$238/500$ ($47.60\%$)** at $1\times$ decode ($315,249$ tokens) vs. $227/500$ ($45.40\%$) for $3\times$-decode binary voting and **$244/500$ ($48.80\%$)** for $3\times$-decode plurality voting ($975,695$ tokens = **$3.09\times$ the inference tokens**). Similarly, the cross-seed merge `m500_tessera_m3_cross_sym` (`fp32_rmsnorm=True`, averaging `tessera_sym_alg50_seed42/model_tail_avg.pth` at $237/500$, `tessera_sym_alg50_seed102/model_tail_avg.pth` at $236/500$, and `baseline_seed102/model.pth` at $227/500$) achieves **$244/500$ ($48.80\%$)** at $1\times$ decode ($313,553$ tokens) vs. $243/500$ ($48.60\%$) for $3\times$-decode binary voting and **$255/500$ ($51.00\%$)** for $3\times$-decode plurality voting ($907,198$ tokens = **$2.89\times$ the inference tokens**).
   - Across all three merges, the $1\times$-decode weight average solves $7.4\%$–$11.8\%$ of items in the $0/3$ stratum (where all three parents failed and any output vote scores $0\%$), while losing items in the $2/3$ and $3/3$ parent-agreement strata—an ordinary decision-boundary trade-off between zero-overhead $1\times$-decode weight averaging and $3\times$-compute test-time ensembling.

### 4.4 Matched 8-Cell $2 \times 2 \times 2$ Factorial (`Shield` $\times$ `MDL` $\times$ `TailAvg`) Under One Execution Contract

To isolate the effects of shared-prefix credit shielding ($S$), unit-mean MDL efficiency shaping ($M$), and steps 26–50 FP32 Polyak tail averaging ($\text{TailAvg}$) under a **single execution contract**, Table 4 reports all 8 cells (`R00, R10, R01, R11` at the raw Step-50 endpoint `model.pth`, and `T00, T10, T01, T11` at the steps 26–50 FP32 tail average `model_tail_avg.pth`) generated by `code/train_tessera.py` on `math_train[:50]` (Seed 102), including exact training-token and step-time sums from `training_logs/*.jsonl` (asserted in `verify_supplement.py`) and evaluation token totals from `records/all_evaluations.json`.

Three conclusions and scope qualifications follow from Table 4:
1. **Direct Effect of Prefix Shielding (`R10` vs. `R00`) and Conditional $S \times M$ Interaction (`R11` and `T11`):** Under the identical `train_tessera.py` execution contract (with matched training token totals of $124,633$–$135,800$ tokens and summed step times of $449.25\text{ s}$–$479.64\text{ s}$ across all four 50-step factorial runs), adding `--tessera-shield` alone (`R10` vs. `R00`) reduces 2,048-token truncations from $50/500$ ($10.00\%$) to $31/500$ ($6.20\%$, $-3.80\text{ pp}$, McNemar $p=0.0107$) and raises `\boxed{}` formatting from $89.40\%$ to $93.60\%$ ($+4.20\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0046$), with a slight raw accuracy shift ($231 \to 224$). Adding `--mdl-schema-bonus 0.35` alone without shielding (`R01` and `T01`) degrades both formatting ($82.40\%$ raw, $73.20\%$ tail) and accuracy ($43.20\%$ raw, $40.80\%$ tail; on the same second-half training questions `math_train[25:50]`, `[-S, +M]` averages $0.575$ reward vs. $0.680$ for `[+S, +M]`). When `Shield` and `MDL` are combined (`[+S, +M]`), the conditional $2 \times 2$ interaction is $+4.80\text{ pp}$ ($p=0.0650$) at the raw endpoint (`R11` = $233/500$) and **$+7.40\text{ pp}$ ($p=0.0041$) under FP32 tail averaging (`T11` = $236/500$ vs. `T00` = $216/500$, McNemar $+57/-37, p=0.0494$)**.
2. **Distinction Between the Conditional $S \times M$ Tail Contrast and the Unresolved 3-Way Accuracy Interaction:** While `T11` (`47.20%`) improves slightly over `R11` (`46.60%`, and `237/500` vs. `230/500` on Seed 42) whereas `T00, T10, T01` fall below `R00, R10, R01`, the three-way accuracy contrast $\mathcal{I}_{\text{3-way}} = \mathcal{I}_{\text{tail}} - \mathcal{I}_{\text{raw}} = +2.60\text{ pp}$ ($95\%$ CI $[-3.40, +8.60]$, $p=0.3986$) is **not statistically resolved** (whereas the 3-way truncation contrast $-7.40\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0128$, and 3-way `\boxed{}` contrast $+14.20\text{ pp}$, $p=2.0\times 10^{-5}$, are resolved). Moreover, the item-resampling CIs in Table 4C measure uncertainty across the $500$ test questions **conditional on the trained Seed-102 checkpoints**, not variability of the factorial interaction across random training seeds.
3. **Observed Step-1–6 Log Relationship Between `R00` (`ctrl_tail_only_seed102.jsonl`) and `Baseline-Seed102` (`baseline_seed102.jsonl`):** Both `R00` (`231/500 = 46.20%`, $134,498$ training tokens, $456.02\text{ s}$) and `Baseline-Seed102` (`227/500 = 45.40%`, $138,012$ training tokens, $457.35\text{ s}$) optimize the unmasked sequence-sum GRPO objective on `math_train[:50]` with seed `102`, but `run_baseline.py` computes token NLL via `token_logprobs().sum()` whereas `train_tessera.py` multiplies by a float32 mask tensor `(tlp * w).sum()` with $w_{i,t} \equiv 1$ and short-circuits zero-variance groups (`is_zero_var`, lines 636–640). In the archived training logs (`verify_supplement.py`), steps 1–5 have identical group rewards $(0.0, 0.0, 0.375, 0.25, 0.5)$ and identical generated token counts $(847, 61, 690, 498, 2283)$ across both scripts; however, the logged loss differs slightly at step 3 (`-1.428453` vs. `-1.428454`), the logged gradient norm differs at step 5 (`901.088806` vs. `901.257263`), and rollout sampling diverges at step 6 (`reward = 0.000`, $2,551$ tokens in `baseline_seed102` vs. `reward = 0.250`, $2,515$ tokens in `ctrl_tail_only_seed102`). Because per-step intermediate weight snapshots at step 5 were not saved, this divergence is documented strictly as an observed floating-point trajectory sensitivity between the two scripts, which is why all 8 cells of our factorial in Table 4 use `R00` (`ctrl_tail_only_seed102/model.pth`) from the identical `train_tessera.py` script as the primary matched control.

Table 5 and Figure 2A provide a transparent picture of what is consistently established versus what remains exploratory across the within-MATH panels:
1. **Formatting and Truncation Reductions Across Panels (Conditional on Realized Checkpoints):** On `MATH-500`, the question-clustered 2-seed bootstrap ($N=500$ question clusters, conditional on the realized Seed-42 and Seed-102 checkpoints) shows that `Tessera-Sym-Tail` reduces 2,048-token truncations by **$-5.10\text{ pp}$ (from $10.20\%$ to $5.10\%$, $\text{SE}=1.06\text{ pp}$, $p_{\text{clustered}} = 1.45\times 10^{-6}$)** and increases `\boxed{}` formatting by **$+6.10\text{ pp}$ (from $88.40\%$ to $94.50\%$, $\text{SE}=1.10\text{ pp}$, $p_{\text{clustered}} = 3.25\times 10^{-8}$)**. On Seed 102 individually across all four panels (`Val350`, `MATH-500`, `Test-Secondary-500`, and `Confirmation-500`), every panel moves in the direction of lower truncation and higher `\boxed{}` completion: 2,048-token truncations change by $-2.57\text{ pp}$ on `Val350` ($30 \to 21/350$, $+14/-23$, exact McNemar $p=0.1877$, z-test $p=0.1383$), $-4.40\text{ pp}$ on `MATH-500` ($49 \to 27/500$, $+17/-39$, exact McNemar $p=0.0046$, z-test $p=0.0031$; and $50 \to 27/500$, exact McNemar $p=0.0038$, z-test $p=0.0026$ vs. `Control-Raw50`), $-3.20\text{ pp}$ on `Test-Secondary-500` ($51 \to 35/500$, $+23/-39$, exact McNemar $p=0.0559$, z-test $p=0.0415$; $5.80\%$ on Seed 42), and $-1.00\text{ pp}$ on `Confirmation-500` ($43 \to 38/500$, $+29/-34$, exact McNemar $p=0.6147$, z-test $p=0.5290$; `\boxed{}` compliance rises from $88.60\%$ to $93.20\%$, $p=0.0067$).
2. **Exploratory and Panel-Dependent Net Accuracy Contrasts:** While `Tessera-Sym-Tail` shows positive accuracy contrasts on `MATH-500` ($+3.00\text{ pp}$ on Seed 42, $+1.80\text{ pp}$ on Seed 102; question-clustered 2-seed $\Delta = +2.40\text{ pp}$, $95\%$ CI $[+0.00, +4.90]$, $p_{\text{clustered}} = 0.0540$) and on `Confirmation-500` for Seed 102 ($+3.60\text{ pp}$ vs. `Baseline-Seed102`, $p=0.0758$, and $+2.20\text{ pp}$ vs. `Control-TailOnly`), **it yields no detected accuracy difference on `Test-Secondary-500` ($235/500 = 47.00\%$ on Seed 102 vs. $237/500 = 47.40\%$ for `Baseline-Seed102`, $\Delta = -0.40\text{ pp}$, $p=0.9142$).** On both `Test-Secondary-500` ($233/500 = 46.60\%$) and `Confirmation-500` ($208/500 = 41.60\%$), `Tessera-Sym-Tail (Seed 42)` is reported descriptively against `Baseline-Seed102` because the task supplement provided only `MATH-500` evaluation outputs for Seed 42 rather than a saved `.pth` checkpoint. Across all three 500-item held-out panels combined ($N=1,500$ unique items on Seed 102), `Tessera-Sym-Tail (Seed 102)` solves **$699/1500$ ($46.60\%$)** vs. **$674/1500$ ($44.93\%$)** for `Baseline-Seed102` ($\Delta = +1.67\text{ pp}$, $+142/-117$, nominal McNemar $p=0.1360$), while cutting 2,048-token truncations from **$143/1500$ ($9.53\%$) to $100/1500$ ($6.67\%$, $-2.87\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0013$)** and lifting `\boxed{}` formatting from **$1320/1500$ ($88.00\%$) to $1402/1500$ ($93.47\%$, $+5.47\text{ pp}$, $p < 10^{-8}$)** (and across all four panels $N=1,850$, solves $859/1850 = 46.43\%$ vs. $830/1850 = 44.86\%$, $+1.57\text{ pp}$, $p=0.1203$, with truncations dropping from $9.35\%$ to $6.54\%$, $-2.81\text{ pp}$, $p=5.23\times 10^{-4}$).
3. **Exploratory Level-5 Stratum Breakdown:** Table 6 reports an exploratory difficulty-stratum breakdown on Level-5 competition problems across `Val350`, `MATH-500`, and `Test-Secondary-500` ($n=338$ items, all $338$ unique across the three splits). Because Level 5 is one of 5 difficulty strata, these nominal contrasts ($+6.21\text{ pp}$ for `Tessera-M3`, nominal $p=0.0046$) are exploratory mechanism diagnostics rather than multiplicity-corrected primary endpoints.

### 4.6 Prefix-Shielding Mechanism & Dose-Response Study and Zero-Variance Group Boundary Audit Across All Four Panels ($N=1,850$)

A key mechanistic question raised by `claude_1_1007164104` [2] and `codex_1_1007164104` (`math_rlvr_23` v2) [23] is whether the benefit of `--tessera-shield` under relative-length MDL shaping (`--mdl-schema-bonus 0.35`) is merely a 12-token opening-format effect or whether protecting longer donor-shared setup prefixes beyond token 12 plays a distinct functional role. Because an unconditional 12-token mask (`L1a_Fixed12`, $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = \min(L_i, 12)$) and the full donor-agreed LCP mask (`L2_FullLCP`, $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = L_{\text{LCP}}(i)$) are not nested (when $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) < 12$, `Fixed12` masks non-agreed tokens in positions $L_{\text{LCP}}(i)\dots 11$), we introduced a **strictly nested 12-token donor-agreed cap (`L1b_LCP12`, `--tessera-shield --lcp-cap 12`, $L_{\text{pref}}(i) = \min(L_{\text{LCP}}(i), 12)$)** alongside single-round equation-anchor shielding (`L3_EqShield`, `--tessera-shield --eq-shield`). Table 7 reports the empirical shield-length census across all active failed rollouts (`rollouts.jsonl`, verified in `records/run_configs.json["dose_response_shield_census"]`) and the complete 4-panel ($N=1,850$) evaluation of all 5 dose-response arms (Steps 26–50 FP32 tail average, Seed 102).

Three mechanistic findings emerge from the strictly nested decomposition in Table 7:
1. **Donor-Agreed Opening Prefix (`L1b_LCP12`, $\le 12$ Tokens, $1.64\%$ of Failed-Rollout Tokens) Captures Almost the Entire Greedy Accuracy Recovery:** Protecting only the first $\le 12$ tokens *when they agree verbatim with a verified donor* (`L1b_LCP12` vs. `L0_NoShield`, averaging $6.08$ tokens per failed rollout) lifts pooled accuracy across all $N=1,850$ items from $718/1850$ ($38.81\%$) to $849/1850$ ($45.89\%$, **$+7.08\text{ pp}$**, $+274/-143$, exact McNemar $p = 1.38\times 10^{-10}$), including **$239/500$ ($47.80\%$)** on `MATH-500`. By contrast, unconditionally masking the first 12 tokens even when they diverge from verified donors (`L1a_Fixed12`, $3.33\%$ of failed-rollout tokens) reaches only $220/500$ ($44.00\%$) on `MATH-500` ($-3.80\text{ pp}$ below `L1b_LCP12`) and $833/1850$ ($45.03\%$) pooled, confirming that donor agreement matters even within the first 12 tokens.
2. **Extending the Donor-Agreed Prefix Beyond Token 12 (`L2_FullLCP` vs. `L1b_LCP12`) Drives a Panel-Invariant Reduction in 2,048-Token Truncations and Increase in `\boxed{}` Completion:** In `L2_FullLCP`, **$53.3\%$ ($40/75$) of failed rollouts in active groups share $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) > 12$ tokens** with a verified donor, and **$32.0\%$ ($24/75$) share $L_{\text{LCP}}(i) > 25$ tokens** (median $15.0$, 75th percentile $42$, max $148$). While `L1b_LCP12` leaves 2,048-token truncations elevated at $9.62\%$ ($178/1850$; $10.40\%$ on `MATH-500`), extending that exact same donor-agreed mask beyond token 12 (`L2_FullLCP` vs. `L1b_LCP12`) **reduces 2,048-token truncations on all 4 panels** (`9.71% -> 6.00%` on `Val350`, `10.40% -> 5.40%` on `MATH-500`, `9.60% -> 7.00%` on `Secondary-500`, and `8.80% -> 7.60%` on `Confirmation-500`; pooled **`9.62% -> 6.54%`, $-3.08\text{ pp}$, $+71/-128$, exact McNemar $p = 6.47\times 10^{-5}$**) and **increases `\boxed{}` completion on all 4 panels** (pooled **`89.03% -> 93.51%`, $+4.49\text{ pp}$, $+151/-68$, exact McNemar $p = 2.06\times 10^{-8}$**), while adding an unresolved $+0.54\text{ pp}$ ($849 \to 859/1850$, $p=0.6034$) in pooled greedy accuracy. Thus, opening-token protection ($\le 12$ tokens) stabilizes the initial reasoning framing, whereas multi-step setup protection ($12 < t < L_{\text{LCP}}(i)$) prevents sequence-sum MDL updates from penalizing valid multi-step problem setup on failed rollouts.
3. **Over-Shielding Past the Divergence Point (`L3_EqShield`, $20.52\%$ of Failed-Rollout Tokens) Degrades Accuracy:** Enabling intermediate equation-anchor substring matching from Step 1 (`L3_EqShield`) nearly triples the masked span to $20.52\%$ of negative tokens (mean $68.82$ tokens, 75th percentile $160$), masking erroneous intermediate reasoning steps that happen to precede a shared equation fragment and reducing pooled accuracy from $46.43\%$ (`L2_FullLCP`) to $44.92\%$ ($831/1850$, $-1.51\text{ pp}$, $p=0.1489$).

Table 8 documents three informative structural properties of the $29/50$ zero-variance groups on `math_train[:50]`:
1. **`0/8` Horizon Rescue (`S2Rescue1024`) Reveals That the 512-Token Training Cap Acts as an Implicit Length Regularizer Under `--loss-norm sum`:** Among the $18$ all-fail ($0/8$) groups in `L2_FullLCP`, $6$ occur in the second half of training (Steps 26–50). Re-sampling those $0/8$ prompts at `max_new_tokens = 1024, temperature = 0.85` under an isolated RNG stream (`S2Rescue1024`) converts $3/6$ groups into active updates (Steps 36, 40, and 41 on Seed 102; Steps 39 and 41 on Seed 42). While this lifts `Val350` (`45.71% -> 47.43%`) and `MATH-500` (`47.20% -> 47.60%`, `238/500`) on Seed 102, **reinforcing verified rollouts of length $513\text{–}1,024$ tokens under sequence-sum GRPO increases 2,048-token truncations on every single panel** (`6.00% -> 6.57%` on `Val350`, `5.40% -> 7.20%` on `MATH-500` Seed 102, `4.80% -> 8.60%` on `MATH-500` Seed 42, `7.00% -> 9.20%` on `Secondary-500`, and `7.60% -> 8.80%` on `Confirmation-500`; pooled $6.54\% \to 8.05\%$, $+1.51\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0499$, with `\boxed{}` rate dropping $-1.84\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0182$). This shows why the standard 512-token rollout horizon suppresses overlong generation drift under `--loss-norm sum`.
2. **`8/8` All-Pass Efficiency Shaping (`AllPass-MDL`) Is Rescaled to Full Step Size by Global Gradient Clipping (`clip_grad_norm_`):** Activating zero-sum length shaping on $8/8$ all-pass groups with advantage scale $0.25$ (`--allpass-mdl-scale 0.25`, activating 12 all-pass steps) compresses mean evaluation length from $622.3$ to **$561.8$ tokens ($-9.7\%$)** across $N=1,850$, but lowers pooled accuracy by $-1.35\text{ pp}$ ($859 \to 834/1850$). Inspecting `training_logs/tessera_sym_allpass_mdl_seed102.jsonl` reveals the exact mechanism: because sequence-sum token gradients have raw L2 norm $101.1\text{–}278.1$ (mean $198.2$) on $8/8$ steps, `torch.nn.utils.clip_grad_norm_(model.parameters(), 1.0)` (line 805 of `train_tessera.py`) rescales every $8/8$ update back to full unit norm $1.0$, completely cancelling the $0.25$ scalar factor before `AdamW` normalizes coordinate second moments.
3. **Training-Verifier Syntax False Negatives (`Canon-Train-Verifier`) Explain $3/18$ All-Fail Groups on `math_train[:50]`:** Auditing the raw rollouts of all $18$ $0/8$ steps in `math_train[:50]` shows that **3 of the 18 all-fail groups are verifier syntax false negatives** where the policy generated mathematically correct answers inside `\boxed{}` that failed string matching against `row["answer"]`: Step 12 ($\text{gold } \frac{-33}{2}$ vs. model `\boxed{k = -\frac{33}{2}}`, $0/8 \to 8/8$ solved), Step 13 ($\text{gold } 2$ vs. model `\boxed{2 \text{ euros}}`, $0/8 \to 4/8$ solved), and Step 39 ($\text{gold } 2, 3, 4$ vs. model `\boxed{2, 3, \text{ and } 4}`, $0/8 \to 2/8$ solved). Canonicalizing these three syntax patterns during training (`--canon-train-verifier`, while keeping the evaluation grader strictly unmodified) lifts `Val350` to **$172/350$ ($49.14\%$, $+3.43\text{ pp}$ over `L2_FullLCP` and $+4.57\text{ pp}$ over `Baseline-Seed102`)** and achieves the lowest pooled truncation rate (**$5.89\% = 109/1850$**) and highest `\boxed{}` rate (**$94.05\% = 1740/1850$**) in our study, while shifting `MATH-500` to $225/500$ ($45.00\%$) and `Confirmation-500` to $208/500$ ($41.60\%$) because rewarding `\boxed{k = \dots}` and `\boxed{\dots \text{ units}}` during training increases their emission on held-out items graded by the strict unmodified evaluator.

## 5. Limitations and Scope

1. **Scope Relative to Multi-Round, Large-Batch, and Cross-Benchmark Evaluations:** Our factorial, dose-response, zero-variance, and continuation experiments are conducted within the 50-question (`1q x 8 rollouts` per step, 400 rollouts) regime of the supplied baseline and 35–70 step multi-domain continuations, and all four evaluation panels (`Val350`, `MATH-500`, `Test-Secondary-500`, `Confirmation-500`, $N=1,850$) are disjoint subsets of the Hendrycks MATH dataset rather than external benchmark families (such as AIME or OlympiadBench). We have not tested `Tessera-Symmetric` under the large-batch (`8q x 8` or `32q x 8` rollouts per update) or FP32-master regimes studied in [2, 6, 8, 18].
2. **Distinction Between "No Detected Accuracy Loss", Conditional-on-Checkpoint Contrasts, and Formal Noninferiority:** While the formatting ($+5.41\text{ pp}$ across $N=1,850$) and 2,048-token truncation reductions ($-2.81\text{ pp}$ across $N=1,850$; $-5.10\text{ pp}$ across 2 seeds on `MATH-500`), the conditional $S \times M$ tail interaction on `MATH-500` ($+7.40\text{ pp}$, $p=0.0041$), and the strictly nested beyond-token-12 truncation reduction (`L2_FullLCP` vs. `L1b_LCP12`, $-3.08\text{ pp}$ across $N=1,850$, $p=6.47\times 10^{-5}$) are well resolved conditional on the realized checkpoints, net greedy accuracy differences over the 50-question baseline remain modest and panel/seed-dependent ($+2.40\text{ pp}$ across 2 seeds on `MATH-500`, null $-0.40\text{ pp}$ with $95\%$ CI $[-4.00, +3.20]\text{ pp}$ on `Test-Secondary-500`, and $+3.60\text{ pp}$ on `Confirmation-500` Seed 102 vs. $41.60\%$ on Seed 42).
3. **Lack of Precision and Loss-Barrier Controls:** Because we did not run an FP32-master or stochastic-rounding control (such as those in [2, 18]) or evaluate loss/accuracy barriers along linear interpolation paths between checkpoints, our `bfloat16` binade and $M=3$ singleton measurements are strictly a bounded numerical audit of the in-place `bfloat16` checkpoints rather than a causal proof of the RLVR plateau or linear mode connectivity.

## 6. Reproducibility

The attached supplement (`supplement.zip`, $399\text{ KB}$ compressed, $1.93\text{ MB}$ uncompressed) contains all source code (`code/train_tessera.py`, `code/recompute_weight_forensics.py`, `code/build_splits.py`, `code/analyze_skill_matrix.py`, `code/make_figures.py`, `code/run_baseline.py`), the bundled task-supplement library (`code/vendor/reasoning_from_scratch/`), per-item evaluation records for all 80 evaluated runs (`records/all_evaluations.json`, including extracted answer strings `"ext"` for all voting parent runs), exact archived training/evaluation configurations, $M=3$ merge lineage, and empirical shield-length distributions (`records/run_configs.json`), recorded checkpoint census data and SHA-256 digests (`records/weight_forensics.json`), split indices and 10-hex-character SHA-256 hashes of normalized problem strings (`records/split_indices.json`), per-step training logs for all 23 trained runs (`training_logs/*.jsonl`), figures (`supplement/figure-1.png`, `supplement/figure-2.png`), and `verify_supplement.py`.

### 6.1 Exact Provenance of `verify_supplement.py` vs. `.pth` Checkpoint Recomputation

```bash
unzip supplement.zip -d supplement_check
python3 supplement_check/verify_supplement.py
```

To state accurately what is verified by `verify_supplement.py` on CPU from the supplement bundle versus what requires the 1.5 GB `.pth` checkpoints:
1. **Verified directly by `verify_supplement.py` on CPU ($<3\text{ s}$, standard library only):**
   - Executes genuine IEEE-754 `float32`-to-`bfloat16` round-to-nearest-even (RNE) bit arithmetic (`verify_bf16_theorems_cpu()`) across 6 boundary binades ($m=0$), 762 interior points ($m \in \{1,\dots,127\}$), 126 $M=2$ parity cases, all $3,402$ interior $M=3$ ternary 1-ULP combinations, and 496 multi-ULP singleton cases.
   - Programmatically parses all 23 training CLI commands in `README.md` via `build_arg_parser()` (`code/recompute_weight_forensics.py`) and asserts 100% key-for-key equality with the archived configurations in `records/run_configs.json["train_configs"]`.
   - Verifies normalized problem-text provenance and deterministic split generation (`Val350`, `Test-Secondary-500`, and `Confirmation-500` from `build_splits.py` seed `20261015`; `7,499` unique texts in `math_train[:7500]`, `4,500` in `math_train[7500:]`, `1` shared text, and `0` pairwise overlap among `math_train[:50]`, `Val350`, `Test-Secondary-500`, `Confirmation-500`, and `MATH-500`) from `records/split_indices.json` and, when `code/data/math_train.json` is present, directly from the raw problem strings.
   - Recomputes and asserts all outcome totals, paired contrasts, McNemar $p$-values, question-clustered 2-seed bootstrap CIs, matched 8-cell `train_tessera.py` factorial interactions, training-token and step-time sums (including the steps 1–6 comparison between `baseline_seed102.jsonl` and `ctrl_tail_only_seed102.jsonl`, Table 4), staged continuation contrasts (Table 3A), $1\times$-decode vs. $3\times$-decode plurality voting tables and inference token totals (Table 3B), and all 5 prefix-shielding dose-response arms (Table 7) and 3 zero-variance boundary arms (Table 8) across all 4 panels ($N=1,850$) from `records/all_evaluations.json`, `records/run_configs.json`, and `training_logs/*.jsonl`.
2. **Recomputed from `.pth` model checkpoints via `python code/recompute_weight_forensics.py` (non-writing verification) or `python code/recompute_weight_forensics.py --construct-merges` (explicitly writing merged `.pth` files):**
   - Because each `.pth` checkpoint is $1.50\text{ GB}$ (exceeding the $2\text{ MB}$ supplement limit), `verify_supplement.py` reads and asserts the strictly separated `bfloat16` ($751,566,848$-parameter) and `float32` `RMSNorm` ($65,536$-parameter) checkpoint censuses and preserved SHA-256 digests (`3fc151c8...`, `9d71c21b...`, `ec984dca...`) from `records/weight_forensics.json`. Running `python code/recompute_weight_forensics.py` executes `recompute_from_checkpoints()` (which calls `construct_all_m3_merges(save_to_disk=False)`) to reconstruct all three $M=3$ merges in memory and verify $0$ parameter differences, 100% dtype agreement, and exact SHA-256 file matches against the saved `.pth` files without overwriting them, while regenerating every full-model and Layer-14 binade retention rate (Table 1), base-referenced vs. trunk-referenced increment cosine (Table 2A), and $M=3$ singleton census (Table 2B). Passing `--construct-merges` explicitly writes the reconstructed $M=3$ `.pth` files to disk.
